The Seekers originally recorded Malvina Reynolds' lullaby in 1964, since learned and sung by 3 generations of children. Being born in 1950, I have of course been aware of THE SEEKERS since their inception in 1962 when I was a wee lad of 11 years-old. But it was not until a month ago, that I REALLY got into them; adding them to my Spotify mix, and watching every UA-cam video I could discover. 💘🎶 This song is my #1 Fave of theirs and likely will be in my next TOP 25 Songs of All-Time, All Artists!!! I next will open your link to their DVD, as I would LOVE to own that to share with my wife, family and friends! 🎧💿 THE SEEKERS have vaulted from nowhere to #6 in my All-Time Fave Bands of All-Time!!! My Mom used to sing me to sleep with this song. She would always incorporate us kids into the song. Made it so special. She passed away in 2021, so hearing this song brings comfort to me ❤️
exactly the same for us! she would say “(my name) at the engine (my sisters name) rings the bell.” She sang it to us every night as we fell asleep and she would lay with us. This gives me the greatest comfort

Totally agree. There might be a few equally beloved, but none more so. I grew up with the pub rock era so my preference was harder music than the Seekers, but nonetheless, the voice Judith had was extraordinary and it would be a poor person who couldn't appreciate it or be astonished by the amazing achievements the Seekers had.
And there's a sad irony. Less than a day after my comment, Olivia Newton-John, one of the ones I was thinking of when I said "a few equally beloved" has also passed away. What an awful couple of days.

My mum used to sing me to sleep with this song,She actually sung it better 😂 and my dad had the greatest stories imaginable.so many good memories. Everything was so magical as a child,now life is mostly empty😢 well I have a great philosophy on life and am happy but miss the magical feeling of being a kid,I had some insane imagination as a kid,could create worlds within our own.wish I had it back.

We have heard great female pop singers with powerful and beautiful voices, such as Linda Ronstadt, Agnetha Faltskog (Abba), Karen Carpenter, Ann Wilson (Heart), Carole King, Olivia Newton-John, and others. But no one seems to be able to do what Judith Durham was able to do with her vocal power, pitch, purity, poise, resonance, range, emotion, grace, gentleness, simplicity, effortless delivery, transcendent, heavenly sublime tonal quality, and overall luminous stage presence. A voice with the soft and supple texture of the sublime. Judith left her listeners awestruck with every performance. The angelic wings of her voice allowed the audience to soar with her to the deepest blue of heaven's skies. Truly missed, inimitable, and irreplaceable.

I am devastated beyond expression. My beautiful nan sang this to me as a child, she passed in January 2021, and now the equally beautiful Judith Durham has passed. Rest in Peace, you will forever remain a marvel to vocalists, children and adults for generations to come.

Personally without a single doubt, Judith is really a gifted singer. She sang it so effortlessly, smoothly and naturally even at high notes without any advanced digital effects to make it “sound good”. No gimmick at all! Just pure and clear and good. My dad used to love the Seekers . He would be so sad to hear that Judith has just passed away. She had a wonderful voice and when I was young he was always playing their records. RIP Dad and Judith .
My dad also loved her voice and when he died suddenly in 1974 at the age of 56, I couldn’t listen to the Carnival is Over for many years.

I can remember them seemingly always on TV in England when I was a child in the sixties. My parents loved them and this lovely song takes me back to a better time.
My wife listened to this while travelling on the train on the KZN South Coast going to primary school. That is almost 60 years ago. She cannot listen to this song without shedding copious tears. Life flashes bye like a dream in one night. RIP Judith sing with the other angels.

I lived in Melbourne for five years. I heard Judith sing at the MCG. Her voice was spellbinding. I listen to this song, as well as I am Australian, four or five times a week.

Obviously way before music videos became big time in the 80's, and this is such class and style, I'm curious not so much "why" they filmed this, but not a wide audience to appreciate it. It's like "well, say, let's do something grand, and uplifting, but goes on a shelf until now.
The TV special was watched by a record number of Australians at the time, but as you say on a shelf until the late 90s...
I'm 56, it's 10:13 on New Year's Day morning 2019, and this, I'm afraid, has rather just pulled the legs from under me. It is the first song that I have memories of. We were, at the time of this track, living in Wilmslow, Cheshire, (24 Broadway, if you might, by chance, be the person in that house at this moment - if so, look out of the window of the smallest bedroom, over the playing fields, across to the railway - you're in my room), and dad was an SEO in what was then H.M.Customs & Excise at Manchester Airport. Mum & dad used to put this on the record player outside my sister's room, on the landing at the top of the stairs, (as that's where the nearest electrical socket was), to play on 'repeat', (it was the '45 of this song), until I fell asleep. My room was across the landing from my sister's room, which overlooks the back gardens of the houses in Parkway, (on the offchance that you are, indeed, the present owner of the house and happen to be standing on that landing, thinking about this, having read the earlier bit.) I'm a bit lost for words; I really don't know what else to say. Mr.Swann, Devon, South-Western England.

I had a very similar experience. We too had this song on 45 and played it a lot when I was very young, growing up in Melbourne in the late 1960s.
What a lovely memory! But judging from my personal experience, The playing fields are now a housing estate and the railway line has been closed. Tempus fugit :(

I must nip onto 'Google Maps' a bit later to see if the extremely profitable railway line from Manchester to, (well, everywhere else really), has indeed been closed, and to see how Harefield High School, (formerly Wilmslow Grammar School), has managed to sell their playing fields & fit a housing estate next to the school. (If anyone else fancies a quick look on 'Google Maps', the postcode of our old house in Broadway is SK9 1NB). Would indeed be a shame if the view across the (closed ? .. removed ? .. torn up ?), railway lines over to the Derbyshire Hills on a clear day had been ruined. Regards, Mr.Swann.

I always liked listening to the Seekers. Judith Durham had an angel voice. May she be at peace.

I was born in the early sixties and The Seekers were very much part of the soundtrack to the happiest and most carefree part of my life. Morningtown ride takes me right back there if I just close my eyes.
I listened to this endlessly in my childhood; the 45 spinning on my small record player.
Judith Durham was truly great voice and I loved this song especially.

This took me straight back to my childhood. I shed a tear, to be honest. It's a beautiful song, and it was still being played on the radio when I was little, and life was still golden, and my parents were still young
My dad used to sing this song to me when I was little. One day I hope to sing it to my future children.
