“I Should’ve Made More All Stars Teams” The Jamal Mashburn Stunted Growth Story

  • “Longevity in the NBA isn’t about how high you can jump, it’s how you manage your decline of athleticism while your skill level goes up”. Words of today’s feature Jamal Mashburn, giving game on what he was able to learn over his 12 seasons in the NBA. A career that could’ve easily extended closer to the 20 year mark had he not experience his body separating from his mind in the player he knew how and wanted to be from the player he was allowed to be because of injuries. Jamal Mashburn made 1 all star team in his career close to the end of his career in 2003 and feels he should’ve made much more and I agree. In fact you can’t find many interviews where his name is brought up and the sentiment isn’t the same. That when Jamal Mashburn was in his bag, he was one of the best players in the league. His desire since a young age to not just be a one dimensional person only focused on hoop now and learn nothing along the way to fall back on is admirable. He took his resources gathered over the years, learned and applied himself in business, specifically, Food, transportation and Real Estate. Jamal Mashburn really could’ve been one of the best small forwards of his generation, if not for these reasons.

My favorite thing about Mashburn is how successful he is after basketball with all the investments. I wish the media gave more praise to athletes who done well with their money. Mashburn probably made more money in investments than he did in the NBA. For that reason I salute Monster Mash.

His 2003 allstar season with New Orleans was serious business. His game was so complete. When we talk about FILA signature shoes, his is kind of forgotten behind Grant Hill and Jerry Stackhouse. He's one of the guys who'd translate amazingly to today's game.

Your timeline is waaaay off. Literal used car salesman Frank Zaccanelli traded Jason Kidd. Don Nelson was hired later and he's who traded Mashburn. Nelson, who coveted Kurt Thomas, instigated the trade, not Mashburn. Jim Jackson was the last to go in the big trade for Shawn Bradley.

I loved Mash....he was a BEAST at Kentucky, and it would've been interesting had he not gone to the Mavericks, who were a complete dumpster fire at that time, with absolutely no direction at all. He still put up good numbers there, but it's documented that Front office was in over its head. I was glad he got to better situations in Miami & Charlotte, with more stability and better chances to win. The injuries really robbed him of his athleticism, but his career was still very solid nonetheless.
