  • When you hear the name Sam Bowie, what’s the first thing comes to mind? Anything about Michael Jordan being taken the pick after, going on to become the greatest player of all time, and one of the most iconic brands in American history. The ultimate miss in sports draft history for the Portland Trail Blazers, and somewhat the Houston Rockets as well. Sam Bowie has been featured on many publications like ESPN and Sports illustrated as the biggest bust in NBA history. But why? What Happened? How’s a player good enough to be drafted before 6 all stars, 3 hall of famers and the greatest of all time, become labeled as pretty much a mistake that should’ve never happened? The pick was in, and Sam Bowie was the guy at #2. Without he or the Blazers having that much of a choice, they went forth and created history together, being known and the franchise that made the biggest mistake in history, and a player that didn’t live up to the impossible hype of being drafted before Michael Jordan. Depends on how the Blazers (or whatever team was to get him) would’ve used him, but I’d say about 15 ppg, 12 rbg, 2 bpg average overall. We got a little glimpse if what a healthy Bowie could do when he was in New Jersey: he averaged 14 points & 10 boards in his 1st year with the Nets..

    I heard that Houston did offer to trade Ralph Sampson to Portland for Clyde Drexler and the #2 pick in the 84 draft. So Houston could've drafted Olajuwon #1 and then drafted Michael Jordan #2 and would've had a big three of Olanuwon, Jordan, amd Drexler. Portland would've got their center they wanted in Ralph Sampson but probably still get injuries and has his career cut short due to injury. Also of this trade is made Portland never has to worry about drafting Sam Bowie before MJ.

    It has to be hard living with the perception many have of his playing career. Injury after injury, and the mounting pressure of seeing Hakeem and Jordan performing so well.
    Actually, Bowie had some decent to good years when healthy. He underachieved because his body simply couldn’t hold up to the pounding basketball puts on your body. At least it was never said that he was lazy, or didn’t love the game. He simply had the worst injury luck and draft position perhaps of all time.

  • @stampscapes
    @stampscapes Рік тому

    Another great vid. I don't believe in curses (kind of) but I was wondering what I'd think if Portland got the first pick this year and got Wemby and he went down with a bad career changing injury soon after (Walton, Bowie, Oden). I was relieved when San Antonio got the pick.

  • @creoleDJ
    @creoleDJ Рік тому +7

    If you REALLY want to put someone as the “biggest draft bust ever,” you could put Blazers draft pick LaRue Martin. Martin was drafted #1 overall in the 1972 draft over Bob McAdoo & Julius Erving, among others. In 5 years, he STILL didn’t total as many points as McAdoo tallied in his rookie year! 🤣
    I hate the fact that people always use unplanned injuries as a reason to label someone a bust, like they do with Bowie. (Ironically, another Blazer draft pick, Greg Oden, faces the same criticism.) If people want to use injuries as a measuring stick, then maybe Bill Walton (ANOTHER BLAZER?! WTF?!!!) should be taken off of these “best ever” lists, because he only had about 4 or 5 great seasons before injuries took him down. Just saying…

Yes, Jordan is better but at the same time the Rockets made the best selection they felt like they could have made and it definitely payed off for them. They won 2 championships with him at the helm and he was arguably the 2nd best player in the league with only Jordan ahead of him & was the best center in the league. He was so great to the point up until I watched this video, I never heard anyone give the Rockets any slander for him being picked 1st & honestly if they had to a re-draft, he may still go number 1.

The medical field when it comes to dealing with sports injuries is far more advanced now than it was then. He was never really the same after that injury he suffered in college. The Sam Bowie before the injury could’ve been an All-Star caliber center. Portland drafted him based on potential rather than production. I think his last year of Kentucky only average like 10 points a game.

    One of their strategies of accomplishing this was to be PHYSICAL with MJ who wasn't consider a physical/muscular player @ that time.
    MJ knew there was ONLY ONE WAY to BEAT the bad boys....GET STRONGER.
    How'd MJ do this?
    Simple.... he started lifting
    Point I'm trying to make is that with injury history of bowie(in kentucky) PRIOR to being drafted,
    The trailblazers SHOULD have a bodybuilding coach(THIS IS the 80's of course) and BEFORE ANY scrimmages/practices/game time.... Bowie is in the gym doing HEAVY leg work.

Houston got a hall of famer in Olajuwon that took his team to the finals his first few years in the league. There's no telling if Jordan would have won a title in Houston. It took him time in Chicago to even find the right winning combinations. There's no guarantee that Mike would have found it in Houston.

  • @James-ki5ix
    @James-ki5ix 10 місяців тому

    Too bad that guy didn't get injured so damn much, would have probably been good battles vs Robinson and the other centers in the nba! And if he didn't miss a couple seasons in college he'd be on a different team because he would have made the 83 draft but thinking about that he'd probably still been drafted by Portland if they had a high pick since they still needed a center so Clyde would have been somewhere else maybe, and Jordan for that matter if he went all four years.
