- Has JJ Redick officially succumbed to the temptation of hot-take sports media? Well, perhaps.
Not too long ago, Redick caused a stir by saying Larry Bird shouldn’t be considered one of the greatest three-point shooters of all time. He then foolishly said there’s no difference in physicality between Bird’s era and today’s game. He doubled down on that statement a couple of days after.
“There’s plenty of people that have shot more, made more, and - guess what - made more at a higher percentage than Larry Bird from three,” Redick told Russo. “I’m not saying Larry Bird is not one of the greatest shooters ever. He’s not one of the greatest three-point shooters ever.”

Calling JJ Redick a "poor man's Danny Ainge" is a slap in the face to Danny Ainge.
Danny was actually memorable, played a integral part in the Celtics championships and was good at the game.

Larry Bird is my nominee for the “NBAs Toughest SOB” award of all time. The guy played with injuries that would have sidelined guys today for months if not the season. And not only did he play, he played exceptionally well and dominated in many of those games.
Wearing a full torso back brace he shot a 47 point game. The man was superhuman! NO ONE in today's NBA would even consider playing a game in that condition. Even if by some miracle one was willing to do so, there's no way in hell they'd get 47 points!

In Curry’s Unanimous MVP season, he was shooting 45.4% from 3, which was 28% higher than the league average. In Bird’s 1985 MVP season, he shot 42.3%, which was 51% higher than the league average. Considering Bird shot threes in the clutch. I don’t think there needs to be a debate. We know who the greatest shooter of all time is.

@@OldBenKenobi2318 He's using %s to compare with percentages. He's saying the league average was 35.47 whereas Curry was at 45.4 which is 28% higher than 35.47. Whereas during Bird's season of 42.3, the league average was 28.01, so Bird's number is 51% higher than the average.
Technically they're both percentages, so it's not really difficult to figure out what he meant. The point is the same, Larry was better than league average by a bigger margin than Curry was better than league average.

The comparative difference is irrelevant if the standard is "greatest of all time." The only metrics that count are volume of shots, percentage made, and location of the 3-point line. Anyone who is arguing Curry is not currently the greatest 3-point shooter of all time is...there's no point debating those people.

Bird is the greatest 3 point shooter in NBA history and in Europe greatest 3 point shooter in history is Spanoulis. Percentages not required it is the shots that are required. The times the shots changed stuff.

80s Nba wasn't more physical because of the rivalries or because those players were tougher it was more physical because of the rules.
Some players were tougher. And players generally preferred tough play. Because in pre three point era they were used to the cramming of space.
If Curry, Bird, Jordan, and Kobe were in a 3 pts shooting contest, my money is on Bird to win. He was a storm cold killer, and hit more big pressure, clutch shots than anyone. He even told the other team where the shots were coming from, he was double & triple teamed on 3pters and even shot them left handed, and no one could stop him.

JJ forget the 3pt line was applied in the NBA in 1979 and completely adapted in the NCAA in 1986. Players like Bird and Magic did not have the benefit of practicing the 3 when they were in college or before that. Unlike players today work on their 3 ball majority of time.

I think the three pointer was introduced in the NBA during Birds rookie year and wasn't adopted by NCAA until 1986. So, it's not like it was something he grew up doing, just another thing to consider.
In '87/'88 Larry made more three pointers than 7 entire teams.

You missed the point. The best shooters of the 70's and 80's would be just as good as the shooters now. If they played now they would practice shooting it all the time. Also, if today's shooters played back in those era's they would not shoot as well because of not shooting it as much in practice. Some of them wouldn't even make it to the NBA. Like JJ

If the great shooters of the '80s and '90s paid more attention to three-point shooting, then they would be taking time from practicing another part of their game... These events and proposed changes don't occur in a vacuum...
So, even "if" they made themselves better shooters by practicing, some other activity is likely to suffer because it would be practiced less as a result...

If you remove MJ's 3 point shooting stats for those 2 years the line was moved closer, you would clearly see that Kobe is the better 3 point shooter. But since most don't realize this, people get the impression MJ and Kobe shot the 3 pointer at a very similar efficiency when they compare their career 3 point percentages.

The 3-pointer took all of the heart out of basketball. The 80's had the right balance of threes and an inside game. It is what it is, you can't go back unless you take away the three point line altogether, which will never happen. but if you did, none of today's teams could hold a candle to the great teams of the 80s and early 90s. Celtics-Lakers in the 80's was the golden era of basketball and today's game is a glorified game of horse.

I’d like to preface this by saying that I played basketball in NYC in an all black high school and got my nick name from the brothers playing at The Cage and at Rucker Park. We were all trying to emulate what Larry bird was doing on the playground and it was impossible for us. However, I remember hearing what Pat Riley said, “If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game, I’d choose Michael Jordan, but if I had to choose a player to take a shot to save my life, I’d take Larry Bird."

I could be wrong but I remember a three-point shootout during the All-star break when he missed just one shot. It's the closest I ever saw a player make all of his attempts.

The NBA fans after the 2004 Detroit Pistons championship complained that the defensive low scoring games were boring and thereafter the NBA promoted higher scoring games and less physicality by shooting more threes and calling phantom fouls for playing any type of physical defense. Thus we have today’s era of game play, which indeed is far different from 80’s-90’s basketball. The league is all about the financial bottom line and if fans are not happy with the product, the product must change but what doesn’t change is greatness and even as a die hard Lakers fan since the 80’s, I’d be lying if I said Larry wasn’t one of the top three point shooters in NBA history and trust, I’m far from a fan of his per se, but I witnessed watching entire games not just UA-cam clips of him, so JJ… silence would be the best option here, we all misspeak at times, this is yours 😬🤩

Basketball is the only sport where people actively hate the OG Legends. In futbol we respect Ronaldinho, Maldini, Zidane. In boxing we respect Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard. In tennis we respect Sampras and Agassi. We recognize that we are standing in the shoulders of giants.
He also started his Celtics career with a severe hand injury from softball that permanently weakened his feel with the basketball. Had he not gotten injured he'd have been even BETTER.

The NBA changed a number of rules because in their opinion, it was way too physical. JJ Redick played under the new rules. Why does he think they change the rules in the first place?
Also remember that the 3-point shootout in the 80s didn’t have 2-pointer balls in every rack. So Bird’s total would actually be higher if he competed today. Bird’s score of 24 would probably be 28 today and it would beat 99% of 3-point competitors today.
Those games were unwatchable that's why they changed the rules. If I'm more skilled than you the only way for you to compete is to muck up the game.
They changed the rules - in particular enforcing hand checking - to make it easier for perimeter players to score. They wanted to give teams with top perimeter players a better chance to compete against a team with top big men. The first 3-peat Bulls were the only dynasty without a top big man, and ratings hit record highs during the 90s. Rating dropped during the early 2000s as Shaq, Duncan, etc were dominating the league. They figured out it was more exciting to watch perimeter players dominate than big men, which allowed perimeter players to shoot 3s unobstructed. Perimeter players TS% immediately jumped in 2004-2005, then teams slowly figured out how to fully take advantage of the new rules.

@@joek5078 I could see that. Me personally, I enjoy watching clips of the 2000’s game (Shaq and Duncan are two of my favorite players actually), but I could see why some would call it less entertaining as other eras.
One other thing that hurt the 00’s as far as popularity goes:
A lot of the best playoff series in those years were arguably in the conference finals or second round rather than the finals themselves.
Larry Bird is the only player that I've ever heard of that has players on the opposing team get fined for showing their fanship while getting their behinds handed to them. Tell this kid to go watch the game where Bird dropped 60 on Atlanta and tell him to be quiet.

Claiming todays NBA is as tough and physical as the 80's is not a hot take, its a monumentally stupid one.
The physicality in the 80's crossed all kind of lines according to todays rules, the players even played hurt and the fans loved it, The rivalries were real because they seem to love their cities, their teams and hated their opponents (in a competitive sense) , the league is still good today but back then for fans (just like the players) it was all about our team and our team only.
Now it's more about the players personal feelings than what's good for the team, they should get paid by the game that way they won't sit out half the season if they catch a cold.
I don't think the league is good. It's filled with political nonsense, players who have no loyalty, players that need time off etc. Etc.
Ask Jordan, Bird, Magic, West, Willis Reed and the former greats to take a rest day, they'll tell you to go stick it
The thing I dislike most in today’s game is the phantom fouls. There’s been countless times the defender didn’t even touch the ball handler and he gets called for a foul. So many times I had a confused face with my jaw wide open.
In the past 50 years, here are the highest Total Career Avg Stat Points (PTS + REB + AST + STL + BLK)
#1) Jordan = 44.7
#2) LeBron = 44.4
#3) Bird = 43.1
#4) Kareem = 42.9
Curry is #31 with 37.5

Larry Bird did more than shoot threes, he led team in rebounds one year, he led team in assists, he led team in scoring. Nobody shot more game winning threes than Bird. Birds passing was second only to Magic. Watch Bird vs Lambeer Pistons and you realize the difference between physicality. JJ Redick says he can show physicality in both gereations. What you cannot show is the bloodshed, hurt backs, headlocks, etc that take a serious toll on the body. Player today have no idea what went on back then.
If they eliminated the 3 point line in the 80's, Reddick would have been an actual plumber.

The trouble with 50-40-90 in the modern era, is that guys who take way more threes than past generations have their FG% skewed.
See Jose Calderon in 08-09. He shot 49.7-40.6-98.1… but he shot so many threes, that if you take his FG% without the threes, he’d be at 53.8-40.6-98.1.

The major element missing in todays game is play inside the paint. Fundamentals tell us that a shot 4 feet from the basket is easier than a 20 foot jump shot. Back in the 80s if you wanted to take that chance to get to the paint you were going to pay for it if you weren't creative. Defensive big men were allowed to police the middle and make you pay if you tried to come inside. Gone are the Mutumbo's Lambeer's Mcdyess's Ralph Sampson's and the Moses Malone's.....You had guys on your roster back in the day aka Joe Klein who was ignorantly strong and good defensively that made a living filling that "goon" roll. He would come in just to knock you down and take a foul, that was his roll. Oakley Mason and the Xman all did that kind of thing for the Knicks as well.
Larry's first year in the NBA was the first year for the 3 pointer. Imagine if Larry shot three-pointers his whole life.

The best thing about Larry, he could see the flow of the game and orchestrate it to perfection, whether it be a pass or making a shot. It ain't about how much Larry (or anyone else) shot or the average of a three point shot or a long range jumper; it's about when to take and make the shot, not just jack-up those three point shots until making it. Just like Pat Riley says, I'd definitely would want Larry to take the last shot to save the life.

I can't even watch the NBA today. With the three-point shot, players waltzing down the paint nearly uncontested in any meaningful way, I can't remain awake. The game has evolved because the rules evolved to favor certain players who have gone on to create empires around themselves.

When you have players from the other team, watching going crazy because of the shots Bird was making, says it all.
The 3-point shot in the 80s was seen as a risky play; a wasted possession. When I was playing basketball growing up (and admittedly, this wasn't at a high level), my coach warned us that if he sees us take a 3-pointer, that we'd see the bench. Well, I took one during a game. I hit that shot and I was still benched for the rest of the game. The NBA in the 80s only averaged 3 a game and they were pros.
The Bad boys were there to play physical against Bird. And Bird walked into the 3point shooting contest at the all-star game and said to the contestants who is taking second . Bird won it too. Bird 3point clinic completed. Lol

Even today Bird wouldn't hang around the 3 point line because it would take away other parts of his game, passing, rebounding and the low post play he was so great at. At 6'10" he could easily shoot deep 3's but that wasn't his thing and 3's back then were not what they are today. They have in fact taken away inside play because the ball is constantly being kicked out to the 3 point sharp shooters standing around the 3 point line. Not very exciting to watch but that's what its evolved into.

Bird played in a different era. Imagine if Bird or any of the star players from bygone eras had all the privileges that modern basketball players have growing up: year round training, better strength and conditioning, better equipment, better facilities, etc etc.
Good point, but you forgot the biggest difference. In the 80's NBA players flied commercial airlines in coach! Think about that for a minute. 7 footers cramming into coach seats on Delta and then having to sign autographs walking all the way to baggage claim. Now these pampered pukes have their own private planes and limos but can't play in half their games because of "load management". In the 80's superstars played EVERY night unless they had a damn broken leg. The NBA of those days was men made of Iron. The current NBA product is garbage, I never even watch it anymore.

It always makes me happy when I see opponents give Bird respect. The 3 year MVP stretch might have been the best basketball ever. It wasn’t just Bird who made it the best, it was also the teams and guys he played with and against. I miss those days.

Today's game (with its open floor and free movement) would be ideal for a prime Bird. He would tear teams to pieces shooting all over the floor, including shooting threes. The open floor would also be ideal for his Jedi passing and positional rebounding. Plus, one cannot overlook Larry's ability to make big plays. He would dominate today's game and would be the front runner for MVP.

Problem is Bird did have the numbers! In the playoffs Bird shot something to the tune of 42.7% from 3 pt range. Curry who many think is a better shooter than Bird(but I do not) is shooting 39.8% from 3 pt range. Maybe Curry has a better average during the season but Bird for his career only took 1.9 attempts per game from 3pt line. Bird has said he didn’t even practice the 3pt shot! Imagine if he practiced it!!!
Agreed. No one shot threes at a high output in the 80's NBA because it was just a completely different league. JJ makes his argument waving around the stats, but not the context by design. This is coming from an almost strictly niche, 3 point shooter for his career in Reddick. Basically what he really implied was that HE was a better 3 point shooter than Bird, but used Curry so he didn't look like an asshat.

Bird used the three strategically, either to demoralize the other team at strategic moments or to win games at the end. 90% of the time he would get the ball at the end of close games. Today's game is totally different. More wide-open with many good three point shooters.
