    The reason your channel is doing so well is your very honest and straight with people, you show everything both good and bad and explain it all in great detail and this video was a prime time example. I’ve said it before but your farmyard and animals are a credit to you and your family. Have a great 2023 and thank you for all the great content in 2022

      @@IFarmWeFarm id write exactly as James has written ,and i watch all your videos well done ,,,,,just a small critque, wheres the room for nature on your farm ,hedges are given short back and sides ,all the bushes at old house your working on removed do you intent to plant anything back ,also looking back you removed scrub as you called it for the machinery shed so im just wondering you enviro credentials ,hope its more that replacing a splash plate on the tanker ,have you thought about joining Acres enviro scheme ,of course theres limited acess but you must have resarched it ,if ylou were gauranteed to get in to it would you go for it ,im a farmer by the way

    Hi Adrian, If you drill a hole straight through bars in the open position all you have to do is push in a bolt and it holds it open. A handy fix for working alone.
    Keep the good work up

    You know that corner that gets bad Silage and along the edge of the walls. Get a few bags of salt next year and sprinkle some along them places before you cover the pit. The salt doesn't allow the aerobic bacteria to get going at all and you won't get that waste 👍

  • @nthnmcclure3020

    Great video Adrian. Id's say your waste on the corners and on the slope face of the pit there is due to lack of compaction letting the oxygen in. You can see clearly where the bags have come off because they've squashed down the silage over time, which just shows that the rest of the pit could have done with a bit more compacting before it was covered. Always hard when the slopes are too steep to roll well. And the shoulders are probably the same reason, just hadn't been rolled tight to the walls.

    • @IFarmWeFarm
      @IFarmWeFarm  2 роки тому +6

      Yes I’d say your right there, it’s hard to beat the compaction. That spot it’s hard to get at to roll but the rest of it thankfully looks great once we got into it. Happy 2023 👍

    Hi Adrian, firstly, I used no tyres on my silage pit this year for the fist time after seeing your sucess last year. I have used the pebble bags around the sides for a few years but this year I have used the cage of an IBC tank with the front cut out for the bags commimg off the pit it will hold more and they won't fall off when tilted back. Secondly for your crush gate if you open the gate and drill a hole in the sleeve and through one wall of the bar of gate and put a 8/10mm bolt or pin on a bit of chain to stick in the hole it will keep the gate open and is easy pull out to allow gate close

    Just on keeping the crush gate open. We have the same gate at home and had the same issue. What I did was drill a hole straight through the hinge and pole when it was fully open. I then put a bolt in to leave it locked open, pull the bolt and it slams shut. I have the bolt on a light chain hanging from the pillar so I can put it in any time.

    The corners of the wall Adrian! Ive been farming and drawing silage for years now, covered literally hundreds of different pits. The only thing creating the waste there is that there isn't any compaction. You can roll it all day long but there isn't enough actual grass there to keep it compacted. As soon as you take the machine off rolling. The grass pops back up and air goes right back in to it at base level, rotting the corner, no matter how well you cover it, It's just one of those things that you've to live with or put something very heavy at the corners which might damage the sheet.
    Thanks for all the hard work. Happy new year.

    Hi Adrian, we do a lot of contracting and seen fair few farmers sheet clamp totally different In my opinion doesn’t matter what you sheet with, its the rolling the pit that counts especially with the sides, or air gets trapped and goes mouldy. Take care from Anglesey.

      A bit of re bar with the ends turned down will do the same job. Also regards hanging a gate onto the headgate, make sure it's not in the way of a head scoop which you may not need at present but it is a priceless piece of kit and something we only consider when we're no longer fit to wrestle with the animals. Could you hang it on the centre post and close against the headgate? Thanks for all the wonderful videos and continued success in '23.

Just a thought the mould on the corners could it be a water trap slow to release if there is modifier in it there and the mould in the middle was probably nettles or docks bit of bad grass. I think if you have a spare half an hour next silage time, if you jump on your loader tractor and take round an extra bucket full or so on them sides of the ramp and give them a good roll down then I'd be sure there won't be waste. There just slack spots where there not packed in just enough.
