    You know that corner that gets bad Silage and along the edge of the walls. Get a few bags of salt next year and sprinkle some along them places before you cover the pit. The salt doesn't allow the aerobic bacteria to get going at all and you won't get that waste 👍

    Try use not sharp shovel on the first liar of plastic on edge to tuck it down. Or lay plastic over all edges before making silage. But som acid can allso help alot. Walk over with a handpump with acid before u cover

    Silage looks good. I do have them little bits of Moldy spots right on top but never makes much difference. They never are deep. Hard to beat a new calf born on farm and all going well. 👌

    • @IFarmWeFarm
      @IFarmWeFarm  Рік тому

      Cheers Gerry, ya it was only a barrow or two of mould so no big issue, probably not rolled enough at the back. 👍

  • @nthnmcclure3020
    @nthnmcclure3020 Рік тому +18

    Great video Adrian. Id's say your waste on the corners and on the slope face of the pit there is due to lack of compaction letting the oxygen in. You can see clearly where the bags have come off because they've squashed down the silage over time, which just shows that the rest of the pit could have done with a bit more compacting before it was covered. Always hard when the slopes are too steep to roll well. And the shoulders are probably the same reason, just hadn't been rolled tight to the walls.

    • @IFarmWeFarm
      @IFarmWeFarm  Рік тому +6

      Yes I’d say your right there, it’s hard to beat the compaction. That spot it’s hard to get at to roll but the rest of it thankfully looks great once we got into it. Happy 2023 👍

    • @markryan6578
      @markryan6578 Рік тому

      A bit of re bar with the ends turned down will do the same job. Also regards hanging a gate onto the headgate, make sure it's not in the way of a head scoop which you may not need at present but it is a priceless piece of kit and something we only consider when we're no longer fit to wrestle with the animals. Could you hang it on the centre post and close against the headgate? Thanks for all the wonderful videos and continued success in '23.

    Hi Adrian, we do a lot of contracting and seen fair few farmers sheet clamp totally different In my opinion doesn’t matter what you sheet with, its the rolling the pit that counts especially with the sides, or air gets trapped and goes mouldy. Take care from Anglesey.

      @IFarmWeFarm  Рік тому +1

      I think you hit the nail on the head lad, it’s a hard spot to get rolled properly. Might try it a different way this summer, more of a slope and higher at the back. Thanks for the info lad 👍

    I think if you have a spare half an hour next silage time, if you jump on your loader tractor and take round an extra bucket full or so on them sides of the ramp and give them a good roll down then I'd be sure there won't be waste. There just slack spots where there not packed in just enough.

    Hi Adrian, firstly, I used no tyres on my silage pit this year for the fist time after seeing your sucess last year. I have used the pebble bags around the sides for a few years but this year I have used the cage of an IBC tank with the front cut out for the bags commimg off the pit it will hold more and they won't fall off when tilted back. Secondly for your crush gate if you open the gate and drill a hole in the sleeve and through one wall of the bar of gate and put a 8/10mm bolt or pin on a bit of chain to stick in the hole it will keep the gate open and is easy pull out to allow gate close

    Just on keeping the crush gate open. We have the same gate at home and had the same issue. What I did was drill a hole straight through the hinge and pole when it was fully open. I then put a bolt in to leave it locked open, pull the bolt and it slams shut. I have the bolt on a light chain hanging from the pillar so I can put it in any time.

    The corners of the wall Adrian! Ive been farming and drawing silage for years now, covered literally hundreds of different pits. The only thing creating the waste there is that there isn't any compaction. You can roll it all day long but there isn't enough actual grass there to keep it compacted. As soon as you take the machine off rolling. The grass pops back up and air goes right back in to it at base level, rotting the corner, no matter how well you cover it, It's just one of those things that you've to live with or put something very heavy at the corners which might damage the sheet.
    Thanks for all the hard work. Happy new year.
