Hey everyone! THIS MOVIE WAS FUCKING INCREDIBLE!!!! Literally one of the BEST movies I've ever seen in my entire life! I just wanted to thank each and every one of you for clicking on this video, watching, it, and commenting! You guys are the fucking best! I hope you enjoyed this reaction because I had such a blast making it! PS: Since I titled the first video "*DUNE* is better than *STAR WARS*, and people got FURIOUS!!! I wanted to title this one *STAR WARS* is dead. *DUNE* is king. just to keep the joke going, but I didn't want to troll that hard. Not for this video anyway! Lol. Love you all!!
@@alexhefnerstvmovievaultI hope you'll not lose interest in Star Wars after Dune 😢 And the other thing is that I strongly recommend you add Fast and furious franchise to your list
i have never been particularly attracted to timothee even though i like prettier boys compared to intense masculinity, but that moment was hot as hell and so was the “none of you can stand against me” scene
I love how Alex was in the middle of talking and even he decided to shut up to the command, really shows how much this scene has so much...power to it. Absolutely brilliant.
Part 1 and 2 both were extremely visceral in theater. I’ve never heard so much silence in a theater before than watching the last half hour of part 2. Incredible experience I will not forget
In the book, a kerchief worn on the head symbolizes being a married woman with child. This was of course changed in the movie as they don't have a child in this adaptation, so instead it becomes a symbol of her love for Paul. But also in the book, a kerchief worn on the arm is a signal of mourning when you lose a loved one... So Chani moving this symbol of love to her arm really illustrates her broken heart.
Dilleneuve has already said he doesn't want to adapt anything past Messiah. I wouldn't be surprised if he completely wraps up the story in the next movie. Either with or without Paul's child. Almost definitely not going to be a worm emperor though, I think that kinda stuff was the reason he didn't want to go any further.
@@AbyssWatch3r They have stillsuits and tents that collect sweat though. They have the technology to purify it. It wouldn't be wasted even if he just came into a rag in the tent.
Just in case it wasn't clear at the end of the movie, you hit the notch, Alia (Paul's sister) did receive all the memories of Reverent Mothers just like Jessica when she drank the Water of Life. Alia literally became conscious as a fetus, with the hundreds years worth of knowledge. So her communicating through Jessica was the real deal.
To be fair, in the book Alia was actually _born_ before she started talking to Paul. They compressed five YEARS into maybe five months. They also skip over the part where Paul and Chani have a son during those years
I like how Alex says he wont miss a single detail moments after missing that the narrator was the Emperor's daughter. Literally the first detail in the film.
Love how Paul is simultaneously heroic and villainous in his big scenes. To the point the concept of trying to put him in a box becomes redundant and you just have to accept that he is what he is.
He's never villainous the entire book or movies tho...? Lmfao he liberates the fremen... Man some of you people don't even deserve to see such a film... Go back to your MarVEl MovIeS and disney StAr WaRS.... "ThiS iS ThE WaY BrOooo" 🤣🤡 buncha clowns
The power he commands through only his voice and his stare is incredible. The "Silence!" and then a minute later, the stare as he waits for the emperor to bow. Chalamet is incredible here You can really feel how he finally embraces his dark destiny. As Loki would say, he is "burdened with glorious purpose"
...I love how Frank hints at this with his "historical" quotes opening the chapters. Literally: "There is no measuring Muad'Dib's motives by ordinary standards. In the moment of his triumph, he saw the death prepared for him, yet he accepted the treachery. Can you say he did this out of a sense of justice? Whose justice, then? Remember, we speak now of the Muad'Dib who ordered battle drums made from his enemies' skins, the Muad'Dib who denied the conventions of his ducal past with a wave of the hand, saying merely: 'I am the Kwisatz Haderach. That is reason enough."
RE: Fayd Rautha kissing the Baron, in the books it's implied that the Baron has been sexually abusing Feyd Rautha since he was a young boy, so. There's that. Also in the movie Feyd going back in for the second kiss was improvised by Austin Butler
Stilgar is the saddest part of the movie for me. "They were friends, now they are followers." In the books: "I gained a great warrior but lost a great friend." You can tell he was being a bit of the fun drunk uncle that has an equal amount of wisdom and humor, memeing about Lisan al Gaib for most of it until Paul rode the worm. At the end the uncle personality is gone and he's a zealous warrior.
Exactly! Near the end of the book, Paul notices that and it saddened him to see a good friend, mentor, and strong leader, become just a creature of worship.
@CT-Fives-bb9wp I wouldn't say a slave to prophesy and belief. I mean if someone with future telling powers came to me and showed me a path to paradise I would follow them. I mean everything they set their sights to will happen wtf else am I gonna do.
First movie I've ever had the privilege to watch in IMAX, and dear god, it's similar to the first time experiencing VR. No words or explanations of it can really do it justice. Best movie experience I've ever had, hands down. But damn did I have a hell of a headache driving home lol.
@@di3486 yeah it was fast but it kinda had no choice. The battle with the Emperor was the perfect stop-off point. If the movie ended on an earlier part of the story while still maintaining the 2hr4hmin run time, viewers would be bored out of their minds.
The 1st time Paul takes his ring off is when he "found his way" meaning he has decided to become EQUAL to the Fremen and not above them. The next time he puts it on is when he became the Kwisatz Haderach and he declares that he is the Duke of Arakkis.
20:55 Nice catch. In the book, we get inner monologues and the Baron was intentionally setting Rabban up for failure so that their people would support his decision to replace him with Feyd . Tightening the grip, lose control of the spice, get replaced.
It was also to make the city dwellers of Arrakis welcome Feyd as a liberator, freeing them from Rabban’s oppression. The fact that Rabban didn’t see through the plan is why he’s not in line to become the next Baron.
@@joshuafischer684 Nope, he was gonna be the fall guy for his uncle's plan. Problem was, the people of Arrakeen hated Harkonnens in general, not only Rabban...but by that point it was pretty much all over. In the book the Emperor captured Rabban and had him executed and his head put on a pole outside his palace.
A lot of ppl who haven’t read the books don’t know that the fremen are actually extremely intelligent and civilized, they have a seitch factory basically that engineers all of their technology, in fact their still suits are envied across the galaxy many have tried to copy them but it’s a secret tech, they are not primitive, spiritual yes. pretty cool
I feel like the proof in the films is the machine Chani shows Paul when he starts flirting “It catches the moisture” It what???? It’s a big sand fan but it catches water and distills it with a plastic piping system? I call magic bs
Wow. Paul doesn't become a 'villain'. The people saying this are just as dumb as the ones thinking he was a hero after reading the first book. Listen to Frank Herbert in interviews. He calls Paul an anti hero. He said the difference between a hero and anti hero is where you stop the story.
Yeah, but I wouldn’t say Paul is the villain, nor is he a hero exactly. He does things because he has to do them. We see how it hurts him and haunts him that he has to do these things. He is a good guy, but this role has been forced on him.
The fact that this movie was supposed to be released in 2023 but it was placed in 2024 because of the SAG strikes, makes this movie much more well awaited
I know we were all sad it had to get pushed back, but the press tours during March went so hard. They definitely needed the time and promotion for it! Worth the wait.
29:09 I believe the black and white scenes were shot using IR (Infrared cameras), you can also see how the fireworks just look like big blotches of ink.
Idk if I would call it a running gag, but every time Stilgar goes on his rants about "As Written!" I die from laughter. Close to being my favorite character for this movie but I have to give it to Paul, Timmy really went all out in his performance for this movie
My favourite line from him is “Also, watch for the centipedes. Not the big ones, they are harmless, but the little ones” then holds his hands two feet apart 😂 Javier Bardem has the most amazing sense of comedic timing. He was so good. You can also really feel like he and Duncan Idaho must have really hit it off.
That also adds to his arc. He's a quirky guy. He's a wise guy. But he's also a fierce warrior. His fanaticism and desperation make him look funny, but remember: this guy can probably take down as many Sardaukar as Duncan. A nice guy blinded by faith and deadly dangerous. Makes me wonder how many people IRL are like this and how can we help them.
Javier Bardem is an amazing actor, the contrast between his character in Dune and his character in No Country For Old Men shows his admirable craftmanship and experience, truly a top actor of Earth and Arrakis
It's so funny watching people arguing over whether Paul is really the hero or the villain. He's both and neither at the same time. But I guess that's the beauty of this story, it shows how each one of us values different things and what we are willing to forgive.
@@TheReDeeMeR1988 When he assumes power under the mantle of the Kwisatz Haderach. Oh, and FRANK HERBERT is on repeated record stating that Paul is not a good guy...and that seeing Paul as a good guy is not a good sign.
@@Muschelschubs3r That is true but they make it clear in both the book and the movie that Paul basically had no choice but to assume power and take control of the Fremen if he wanted to liberate them from Harkonnen control. This is especially true in the movie since all of the northern Fremen tribes who didn't believe in the prophecy (aka Chani's people) were wiped out by the Harkonnens. This means that the only Fremen who were left by the end of the movie were the fanatical southern tribes who worshiped the Lisan Al Gaib.
How is he both and neither?? That is confusing I believe he’s the villain, he may help liberals Arrakis but at what cost since many of them are going to die??
Right. In a way, it's worse than death because he has to live with the fact that he was brought to his knees both figuratively and literally with so many witnesses.
The worm riding is pretty cool. The "ledge" he's grabbing onto is the edge of one of the worm's scales. By prying it open, he's exposing those holes (some kind of sensory organ) to sand. So the worm adjusts to try and keep that section above the sand by rotating, so it doesn't get sand in the opening, thereby ensuring the rider is on top of the worm instead of hanging off the side (which is what happens to Paul in that scene before he pries open the scale). This will also keep the worm from submerging with its rider still on. There's a very similar detail in the 80s movie and it just shows the incredible detail that Frank Herbert used when crafting this world.
@@DawryMike If you've ever taken a fiction writing class, you know that almost no one has an original idea. We all grow up exposed to stories in one story or another, and those become the foundation of our imaginations to create "new" stories.
@@chipious9736 You should look up the blatant similarities between The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks and The Lord of the Rings. Brooks went on to make a very long series from that first book and it was a huge seller, while still shamelessly stealing plot, characters, and setting from Tolkien.
You are correct about Jessica's daughter. She awakened to consciousness in the womb due to the water of life. Basically preborn and a full reverend mother without even being born.
The Doctor Strange analogy is on point. That is exactly how Paul's 'prescience' works. He sees all possible futures at once, and can see the Golden Path
I wonder what would have happend, if Paul and not Leto II would have taken the Golden Path. Maybe Paul not being preborn would have changed it in a way?
He didn't see the Golden Path. His conversation with Leto II is pretty explicitly about the fact that Paul never looked far enough to see it, because he saw what that future held for him and noped out too quickly. He was too concerned with his own self-image and his belief that he could still be moral in a traditional sense, despite everything he'd already done.
@@colbyboucher6391 Paul DID see the Golden Path and knew that he would have to undergo the dramatic and terrible transformation to help carry it out but he turned away from it as he felt he could not shoulder such a LONG burden and sacrifice his humanity. Thus, his son Leto II chose in his place and the rest is Dune history. I think, in a way, it was easier (maybe not even the right word) for Leto II as he had not lived a full individual adult life and did not have physical children of his own to consider. In the Dune miniseries, he's just a teenager when he accepts the sandtrout skin and begins the metamorphosis and in the books, he's even younger, he's just a child then and not even a teen yet.
@@colbyboucher6391 Its in children of dune, its implied through the use of "cowardice" in his conversation with Leto II that Paul (as the preacher) was able to see the path, but he found himself unable to take the final step of eliminating his humanity due to his love for his concubine and the enormity of the sacrifice. He also did not foresee the death of channi or the birth of Leto II.
As much as people talk shit about him missing some important details, he does a really good job at piecing things together in the plot. A lot of people will just watch a movie with nothing but air in their heads. He pays attention
So true! I absolutely adored seeing it in theaters! My boyfriend and I were literally slapping each other’s arms with how excited we were over some of the scenes
When you see it in IMAX, look closely at Guerney’s eyes when Paul puts his signet ring on. You can tell that he is filled with pride and joy. In IMAX, because of the bigger screen and different aspect ratio, you get a much better look at what the actor’s faces are doing. Everybody in this movie brought their absolute A game. The acting is phenomenal, without exception. Both times I saw this movie, I *knew* that I was witnessing cinematic history being made.
The light on planet harkonnen also explains why all of the harkonnen are so pale. They grew up on a planet with almost no ultra violet rays. That is also why their suits for the desert completely cover up their entire body. They would burn too severely if they were outside too long in the desert. Their suits have small fans in them to cool them off since the wind doesn't reach them.
"zendaya can say so much without actually saying anything, just her looks" pls yes i watched her new movie challengers a few days ago and her facial expressions are just so good also saw dun part 2 twice at the cinema and would've gone a third time if someone asked me if i wanted to watch it with them haha just for pauls speech (or just the last 30 minutes in general) i liked this one way more than the 1st one
One advantage it did have is that most of the action in the book is in the latter half. But it took Villeneuve’s genius directing to make us believe it was happening.
25:00 to be able to connect dots this well without knowing the series must be such a thrill. All these details are more plainly explained in the novel so seeing alex firing all these brain cyclinders is super cool
32:53 Remember Paul dreaming of Chani in the fist movie? Feyd and Paul are on the same level in the Bene Gesserit breeding program, Paul was supposed to be a girl, then married to Feyd (ending the Atreides/Harkonnen feud) then their kid was supposed to be The One (kwisatz haderach).
Some people have kind of mentioned it, but Villeneuve changed Chani’s character b/c Frank Herbert had expressed disappointment that readers of the book thought of Paul as a hero and didn’t see it as the cautionary tale he meant it to be. To better convey this, Chani was written to be a counterpoint to the believers which she wasn’t in the books. Also, they don’t mention that in the book Paul becomes responsible for Jamis’s wife and children (two sons IIRC) when he kills Jamis, and as well at the end Alia (his sister) is like 4 and freaks everyone out b/c she’s basically an adult in a little kids body with all the memories of people’s pasts
32:11 I was just surprised, that Irulan wasn’t angry at her father. Not in the “how could you do that to the Atreides” way. Irulan probably understood piting the Harkonnens and Atreides against each other was necessary. But then her father ruins everything out of petty jealousy. Not only the complete eradication of the Atreides kills the entire plan of them and the Harkonnens exhaust each other, but her father lends his personal army to the cause. With this he gives such a weapon into the hands of one of the most cruel and ambitious house, that they can use to dethrone him anytime they choose. In the mind of someone intelligent and good strategist as Irulan, this move is infuriatingly stupid and ultimately ruins their entire house. Shaddam lost everything with ONE stupid descision.
You are you asked how Feyd could have dreamt about Lady Margot before meeting her, and the answer was given in the first movie. Remember, the Bene Gesserit have many prospects for their Kwisatz Haderach, with the Harkonnen and Atreides bloodlines featuring prominently. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that Feyd has some of the same foresight abilities as Paul.
Fun fact just for people who don't know, the character Lanville, who fought Feyd in the arena, was the fight coordinator for this film. I also hadn't noticed at first that he's in Dune Pt 1 talking to Duncan when that character is first introduced.
FYI, when Paul was riding the worm, he used the hooks to pry up a worm scale and expose the worm's flesh to the irritating sand, This causes the worm to roll so the exposed scale is top-side, and therefore Paul doesn't get buried under the worm. The process is described in a lot more detail in the book.
it's entertaining, but it's pretty dumb, even for Alex. He literally knows they wear stillsuits and what those do. He also knows about the tents that collect sweat and breath and filter it for drinking, as they showed it in the first movie
33:40 - hahaha - you misunderstand! She didn't "give up" anything. She TOOK everything. She's a Bene Gesserit Sister. She's a Weapon. Poor Feyd never had a chance! hehe hehe hehe
Alex, the Harkkonnen Home world scene was shot entirely in Infrared. You nailed it on the head about it sucking out all the color. In the books, that is exactly what the black sun does, that's why the Bene Geserit went from Black to White
@@PeregrinoZensunni Yeah, at first i thought its because black suns give infrared light instead of ours. Then, it was stated that it was because of all the pollutants of the planet due to a corporatocracy in their past, thus the pollutants in the air are refracting many chemical substances to create the landscape. Its literally awesome.
Timothy Chalemet's voice when he's speaking Fremen at the War Council is so bad-ass, and he sounds so different. The authority he conveys in that scene gave me goosebumps. What a performance! Rebecca Ferguson also did a phenomenal job as Lady Jessica. The way she switched when she became the Reverend Mother, and communicating with her unborn daughter, Alia was just outstanding. Zendaya was a bad-ass in this as well. But for me, the standouts were the cinematography by Greig Fraser, the music by Hans Zimmer, and of course the directing by Denis Villeneuve, and we can't forget the author, Frank Herbert, who created rich worlds, diverse characters, and a lore and mythology that will no doubt outlive us all. Incredible work by everyone involved. I wasn't sure about Austin Butler as Feyd Rautha when I heard he was cast, but now that I've seen it, he was actually great.
"Wait, how could he have dreamed about her if he's never seen her?" This would've been a good question, if it weren't for the fact that this is a sequel to a film chock full of Paul dreaming about a girl he's never seen.
@@timon93in the book, she wore it after she had their son and it represented that she had birthed a male fremen; in the movie, denis said it now represents her love for paul
Dude, you're like, by miles my favorite reactor for SURE! There's so much to compliment here, from your appreciation for the filmmaking, to how much you manage to understand what the Director is trying to say with every scene WHILE also giving us an pleasant and entertaining reaction. Plus 45:56 that's EXTREMELY precisely right. 46:08 also right. 46:14 right as well... but, Anakin is like Paul would be the better way to describe it but, yea, that's right.
I assume what happened with Chani at the end of this movie was done as a sort of cliffhanger for a possible 3rd film - Dune Messiah. That was not how it went down in the book. After defeating Feyd-Rautha in hand-to-hand combat, Paul subjugates the emperor and claims his daughter's hand in marriage, a political union essentially making Paul emperor. But he makes it very clear to the entire room that the princess will lead a barren, isolated life, as he will never touch her. Chani would officially be called concubine, like his mother, Lady Jessica, was to his father, Leto, but in every way that mattered she would be his wife, his only love, and the mother of his children. She understood this and stood by Paul through it all. I think a number of the changes we see in Dune 1 and 2 are a result of looking back at Frank Herbert's interviews, opinions, and commentaries on the themes interwoven within the story and what he meant to convey as the author. So, this movie, while absolutely MAGNIFICENT and thus far my favorite on-screen telling of the Dune story, was not altogether faithful to the story as told in the 1st book - Dune (which I highly recommend you read). I'm definitely excited to see what they do with the 3rd movie. I'm not sure they'd be able to do justice to the 4th because of the massive CGI that would be required to tell the God Emperor of Dune story (no spoilers!), but we'll see.
I think the craziest thing you noticed is Chani's blue headband. It says somewhere (Idk if it's in the book or the writer of the book said it idk) that when a freman is in love they are blue. I think it's crazy that you noticed and put together that when she was wearing blue she was in love and that when she wasn't wearing it (at least not on her head) she wasn't in love as much anymore One other thing I'm the book Chani believes in the prophecy but in the movie she is the only one who doesn't. I like that change and think it works well for the movie. Loved the reaction, and am glad you enjoyed this amazing movie.
In the books Chani is really on Pauls side, the entire time (espacially with the wedding), they even had a baby, which was killed in one of the attacks of the Harkonnen
Yes. In the book she is immediately infatuated with Paul after he kills Jamis. One of my favorite and most ominous parts of the book is Pauls reaction upon learning his son was killed.
They had to make her character feel angry about the situation for some reason. Give her independence vs being like a slave wife (is the feeling people would feel about it.). In the book she just knows it has to be done and accepts it. Fremen aren't as attached like we look at marriage. I love what they did with the movie overall but that and a couple other things I wish they had done - like his sister being born and killing the Baron. Then at the end in his fight it feels like he's losing but in the book he's in complete control and makes feyd look like an incompetent fool. Still though this movie is a 10/10 for me.
@@Dugrath In my opinion, the changes to Chani's character were necessary to externalize what is told entirely through internal monologue in the book. The alternative would have been for the characters to say their internal thoughts out loud, and we all know how incredibly well that worked in the Lynch movie -- said no one ever.
Love how Paul starts the fight at the end with Duncan’s salute. But mid fight does Jamis’s as well. Great way to show how he’s adapted both styles of fighting
35:18 When he said "fear is all we have", he meant the only weapon they have to use against the enemy. The fremen were at a clear disadvantage, so he was creating a reputation and using his own legend to make the Harkonnen men fear the fremen. That is why he said that after Gurney said this: "We've heard many stories about Muad'dib, and none of them good" 35:15
Franc Herbert (the original author) said about Dune "I wrote the Dune series because I had this idea that charismatic leaders ought to come with a warning label on their forehead: 'May be dangerous to your health" That leader is Paul
@@Caderynwolf It's a weak and far-stretched comparison, pointing that out did not indicate any support for Trump. Interesting that you assumed that it did.
Sorry but Austin’s performance is no where near as good as Heath Ledger’s was. Austin Butler did good, don’t get me wrong, and I do agree this movie is a masterpiece
And now THAT, my good lad, is the original Anakin Skywalker story. 💯 I converted myself from a die hard fan of Star Wars, to a worshipping Stilgar leveled addict in everything that involves Dune! ✨️ You DEFINITELY need to watch this in theaters, the cinematography, the sound design, the cast and not to mention the MUSIC... Chef's Kiss* 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Same I still love star wars was raised on it . But this iteration of dune is this generations star wars if that makes sense. Im 25 and i can see them going till I'm at least 35 or 40 . They already have a game coming out so if they really land the movies it's no telling how big the series could be .
Its actually bittersweet because this is the level of detail, respect and character arc Anakin Skywalker should’ve got, so it makes me sad in that regard, but one thing Star Wars will forever be iconic for is giving us Darth Vader, the most iconic villain in sci-fi and movie history
@@gagalover2k10 bro exactly imagine if we were Ina timeline with this director for dune and George Lucas with hanz Zimmer . And the original 70s cast was still young 😭 . Then keeping the same director for the prequels , it would've been big . Then he wouldn't have had to sell to Disney 🥲
Re Paul's perspective: What's unclear is if Paul actually has agency, even though he's the protagonist and it's his story. It's not just his destiny that's unfolding, it's Jessica's and Stilgar's and even Gurney's, since his reveal of the nuclear arsenal is what helps turn the tide. Every step Paul takes here leads him down the path towards being a messiah, but it's never articulated if he's making his own choices or just being led by the fervor around him, even at the last.
The worms have basically big scales all over their bodies, and underneath the scales is soft flesh. The hooks pull the scales back and expose the flesh underneath to the sand, thereby irritating the worm. The worm then maneuvers to keep that part of its body away from the sand. That’s what allows them to steer, and keep the worm above the sand.
Something i noticed is the thumper sound design. At first it's a slow frequency of thumping, but when the worm is coming up the speed increases into a heartbeat. It just sounds really cool
The Harkonnen scenes were shot here in Budapest. They built it up. My friend made the makeup for the actors, including Freyd. Insane, isn’t it, how it looks? No CGI. That shows a bit better than any Star Wars movie ever. Everything that is not desert is from Budapest, Hungary. Btw: the stil suits were made here too. The knive fight training was here too, some of my friends participated in it.
35:00 "I recognized your steps, old man" is exactly the same line that Paul said in the first movie when they went to rescue the workers from the vehicle that was going to be devoured by worms. Paul At that moment, upon coming into contact with the spice, he had a future vision
@@colbyboucher6391 That's true I honestly forgot about those. It would honestly be cool if Leto came back as an ego memory in the next film, but I doubt it will.
"is Paul the bad guy". Yes, also no. Is son is even worse but also greater. Like the chronicals of Riddick stated, sometimes good isn't needed to fight off evil, what is needed is another kind of evil.
@@MrBrock314 but its true, the golden path is the only way humanity the freman survive everthing paul did post drinking the poison pretty much had to happen
Fun fact: the Giedi Prime scenes during the daytime were shot on an infrared camera, making it so that only infrared light could come through the lens, and not any visible light (color wavelengths). Since our sun radiates these infrared rays constantly, it creates this black and white theme to where the sun seems to be radiating pure white photons. These rays can’t be seen by us normally, so it also adds these mysterious effects to where the light is bending in odd ways or luminating settings in different methods.
I love that when you mention all the details and Stilgar's lips, you can also see the most faint blue in Paul's eyes for the first time (after he woke up from the nightmare).
Being a massive fan of the book for decades, seeing this movie on opening day felt unreal. I can't believe how lucky we are for getting arguably the best director working today to adapt this novel and you can tell he truly is a life long fan of it as well. This movie is a dream came true for Denis Villeneuve and for me to!
Fun fact The scenes where Princess Irulan and the Reverend Mother talks were filmed... in a cemetery Those building is the tomb of Carlo Scarpa, an italian architect. The place is called Tomba Brion, in Altivole Btw, nice reaction, love from italy
i can confirm that seeing this in theaters was absolutely mindblowing, one of the only movies in the past couple years that had my heart racing after left the venue and drove home. just a masterpiece of artistic choices and scenes the whole way through. when the Worm broke through the dust cloud after the nukes hit and that hugedeep horn played, it genuinely shook the entire room with pure bass sound. it felt like the worm was speaking directly into my core it was astounding also, as for the kissing on the mouth thing, it doesnt generally bother me even if it is pretty weird. my biggest problem i had with that scene is that it's fuckin BARON LARDASS JABBA THE HUTT HARKONNEN that gets the kiss. if it were ANYONE ELSE i really wouldn't have minded it at all because i know its just to show how strange Feyd and the rest of the Harkonnens are, but that man is so disgusting just the thought of even touching him gives me nasty shivers
Watching this in IMAX was the most intense sensory experience. Its like you can feel the movie as youre watching it because of how they designed the soundscape.
You understand why this book serie Dune is one of the greatest Science fiction story ever written, and this movie is only a small part of this story....
Paul is his own biggest critic. For the movie they made Chani more outspoken and basically had her be his voice of reason to say out-loud what Paul himself is afraid of
40:35 Exactly, the only reactor who said it, he really shouldn't. 42:09 Exactly, you become much more than yourself that you essentially die in the chorus, but kind of also there. Seeing “the path forward” and doing the thing to get there sometimes is the path of billions of people dead in the process. Honestly, so cool to see someone catching so many little details, connecting the dots, acting, understanding the story and how the music adds to it. Good job, man. The movie is a masterpiece.
For the scenes under the black sun you were asking about, it doesn't look like regular black and white because it's not, it's in the infrared spectrum. They used a modified 3d camera rig, essentially a splitter that usually is used to put two bulky cameras effectively eye width apart. For Dune they instead aligned them with no offset, but one of the cameras was an IR camera so they could blend between them as characters moved between shadow (color) and sunlight (IR). I think its an ingenious effect that really makes the planet feel alien.
Well considering the entire series is about how Leaders should come with warning signs they did a really good job of making people feel a little uneasy as Paul gets more and more power.
The second book in the series, "Dune Messiah", is set 12 years after the events shown in this movie. The jihad is done, billions are dead, and there are factions wanting to remove Maud'dib from power. The years immediately following this movie are covered in one of Brian Herbert's sequels to Dune, "Paul of Dune"
God Emperor of Dune is really the big warning for the end for those wanting to play God. When you accept it you'd better actually BE it! Because there really are consequences.
I LOVE the audio balance in this one. The movie's so loud with Alex and matches its intense theme perfectly. You can really hear the bass through the video
In relation to how far along the prophecy the factions are (Paul/his mom vs. Bene Gesserit). The Bene Gesserit assumed Paula and Fayd were about 1 or 2 generations from the genetic breeding program getting to where they have been trying to get it for centuries. That's why the fact they didn't realize Lady Jessica (Paul's mom) was Harkonen, and that Paul was further along than he was is a little sus. If they're so cautious about their breeding program, you'd think they'd have a detailed list of everyone that works for them's pedigree.
SPOILER: The Bene Gesserit know that Jessica is a Harkonnen, the Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam is literally her mother. They just didn’t tell Jessica or Duke Leto in order to ensure the bloodline merge. But Lady Jessica didn’t listen to the Reverend mother‘s request in creating a girl (Bene Gesserit can control their body to such perfection, they can even pick the gender of their child) and birthed Paul because Duke Leto wished for a son so deeply. And because Lady Jessica thought that Paul might be the Kwisatz Haderach, she trained him in the Bene Gesserit ways. He proved that he could be the one when he passed the test with the Gom Jabbar and later with the Water of Life and that‘s when the Bene Gesserit notice how dangerous Paul is, because he can see now, yet remains out of their control. What happens to him will probably be covered in Dune 3? If not, read the books or google Paul‘s fate (I recommend reading the books, I‘m not yet done with them, but they are awesome and Denis Villeneuve literally took dialogue passages from them)
the hooks they use to grab onto the worm pull its breathing flaps open so it won't/can't dive underground. it keeps the worm above ground so you don't die. if you look, whenever it's done you see small holes where the "gills" are pulled open.
29:00 they shot the black sun scenes on Harkonnen in infrared black and white, so that's why it looks unusual and has that almost glow to it. The direction and cinematography are of course outstanding, and the sound design, and score, etc., but there is also a lot of incredible face acting (lol) in this movie.

If they stick to the books also ancestral memories, unfortunately including her maternal grandfather.

"There is no measuring Muad'Dib's motives by ordinary standards. In the moment of his triumph, he saw the death prepared for him, yet he accepted the treachery. Can you say he did this out of a sense of justice? Whose justice, then? That is reason enough."
RE: Fayd Rautha kissing the Baron, in the books it's implied that the Baron has been sexually abusing Feyd Rautha since he was a young boy, so. There's that. Also in the movie Feyd going back in for the second kiss was improvised by Austin Butler

I'm glad they included that scene because the Harkonnens were kind of shafted in this adaptation as far as screentime and development went.
Stilgar is the saddest part of the movie for me.
"They were friends, now they are followers."
In the books: "I gained a great warrior but lost a great friend."
You can tell he was being a bit of the fun drunk uncle that has an equal amount of wisdom and humor, memeing about Lisan al Gaib for most of it until Paul rode the worm.
At the end the uncle personality is gone and he's a zealous warrior.
He became a slave to the prophecy his believes
Exactly! Near the end of the book, Paul notices that and it saddened him to see a good friend, mentor, and strong leader, become just a creature of worship.
Perfectly put. Javier Bardem absolutely nailed this role
@CT-Fives-bb9wp I wouldn't say a slave to prophesy and belief. I mean if someone with future telling powers came to me and showed me a path to paradise I would follow them. I mean everything they set their sights to will happen wtf else am I gonna do.
The look on Stilgar's face at "I see a green paradise" breaks my heart every time; that is the smile of a man who will gladly die tomorrow
Everything in this movie was dialed to 11. Sound, visuals, acting, story, editing, even the pacing. Insanely well done.
Even the worms. There were 11 of them.
I only wish the pace wasn’t that dialed up.

@@di3486 yeah it was fast but it kinda had no choice. The battle with the Emperor was the perfect stop-off point. If the movie ended on an earlier part of the story while still maintaining the 2hr4hmin run time, viewers would be bored out of their minds.
If only it was more accurate to the book. By itself, the movie was great, in context of the book, it was completely wrong.
Maybe I've forgotten, but I thought Rabban was in on the plan
@@joshuafischer684 my recollection is that he was not at all aware of the plan.

@@moon-moth1 sometimes to make a good point some people in the audience need to miss it tbh

It's exactly how Anakin feels about sand. Lucas probably borrowed that idea from Dune, too.

I think, in a way, it was easier (maybe not even the right word) for Leto II as he had not lived a full individual adult life and did not have physical children of his own to consider.

I was just surprised, that Irulan wasn’t angry at her father.

"Wait, how could he have dreamed about her if he's never seen her?"
This would've been a good question, if it weren't for the fact that this is a sequel to a film chock full of Paul dreaming about a girl he's never seen.
I watched this movie in IMAX, and it was INSANE
I watched it 3 times in imax its so good
Yep I saw it on a 1570 IMAX print, the tal 1.43:1 ratio. Actually had to tilt my head to read between the faces/acting down to the subtitles and back.
I’ve never seen anyone else get the significance of Chani’s blue scarf, basically only book readers recognize it. 😮
Does it actually mean something?
@@timon93in the book, she wore it after she had their son and it represented that she had birthed a male fremen; in the movie, denis said it now represents her love for paul
@@chance757 do you know what interview he said that in I love to watch it can you link it or something?
I'm not sure they'd be able to do justice to the 4th because of the massive CGI that would be required to tell the God Emperor of Dune story (no spoilers!), but we'll see.
the 4th movie would be children of dune
I think the craziest thing you noticed is Chani's blue headband. It says somewhere (Idk if it's in the book or the writer of the book said it idk) that when a freman is in love they are blue. I think it's crazy that you noticed and put together that when she was wearing blue she was in love and that when she wasn't wearing it (at least not on her head) she wasn't in love as much anymore
One other thing I'm the book Chani believes in the prophecy but in the movie she is the only one who doesn't.
@Dugrath I think they made her become like this to make it more obvious why Paul is not a good guy
@@Dugrath In my opinion, the changes to Chani's character were necessary to externalize what is told entirely through internal monologue in the book. The alternative would have been for the characters to say their internal thoughts out loud, and we all know how incredibly well that worked in the Lynch movie -- said no one ever.
It really bothers me what they did with her character. Totally changed her
One of the best cinematic experiences of the last 20 years probably.
That is why he said that after Gurney said this: "We've heard many stories about Muad'dib, and none of them good" 35:15
Franc Herbert (the original author) said about Dune "I wrote the Dune series because I had this idea that charismatic leaders ought to come with a warning label on their forehead: 'May be dangerous to your health"
That leader is Paul

*Jessica, practically foaming at the mouth, staving off possession*
"...Nah, I'll pass."
That was hilarious. 😆
Even if you've already seen it at home, still a really good watch in theaters. no one said you can't see it twice lol
Your 'sit in silence' at the end, was me driving home after watching it in IMAX. This is 2024s movie of the year. Hands down. 🔥
52:38 May thy knife chip and shatter is exactly what is meant. The fremen do not wish their enemies victory.
Reminds me of Life of Brian:
"He's NOT the Messiah! He's a very naughty boy!"
"I say he IS the Messiah and I should know, I've followed a few!"
Something i noticed is the thumper sound design. At first it's a slow frequency of thumping, but when the worm is coming up the speed increases into a heartbeat. It just sounds really cool
Alex: Don't call them rats
Rabban Harkonnen: So, anyway. I started calling them rats
That is freaking awesome!!!
35:00
"I recognized your steps, old man" is exactly the same line that Paul said in the first movie when they went to rescue the workers from the vehicle that was going to be devoured by worms. Paul At that moment, upon coming into contact with the spice, he had a future vision
I'm imagining Leto looking from the grave with almost nothing but sadness as his son becomes one of the greatest villains in human history.
His ego-memory sure is. That's the saddest part, that literally is happening.
@@colbyboucher6391 That's true I honestly forgot about those.
It would honestly be cool if Leto came back as an ego memory in the next film, but I doubt it will.
How is he a villain ? He isn't a hero but sure as hell not a villain cuz who's the hero that he's going against and don't say Zendaya 😂

I love the combining of "May thy knife chip and shatter" what Jamis said to him before their fight in part 1 and Duncans salute. Such a nice touch
Fun fact
The scenes where Princess Irulan and the Reverend Mother talks were filmed... in a cemetery
Those building is the tomb of Carlo Scarpa, an italian architect. The place is called Tomba Brion, in Altivole
Btw, nice reaction, love from italy
i can confirm that seeing this in theaters was absolutely mindblowing, one of the only movies in the past couple years that had my heart racing after left the venue and drove home.
just a masterpiece of artistic choices and scenes the whole way through.
when the Worm broke through the dust cloud after the nukes hit and that hugedeep horn played, it genuinely shook the entire room with pure bass sound. it felt like the worm was speaking directly into my core it was astounding
also, as for the kissing on the mouth thing, it doesnt generally bother me even if it is pretty weird. my biggest problem i had with that scene is that it's fuckin BARON LARDASS JABBA THE HUTT HARKONNEN that gets the kiss. if it were ANYONE ELSE i really wouldn't have minded it at all because i know its just to show how strange Feyd and the rest of the Harkonnens are, but that man is so disgusting just the thought of even touching him gives me nasty shivers
Watching this in IMAX was the most intense sensory experience. Its like you can feel the movie as youre watching it because of how they designed the soundscape.
I love how you are so intrigued and serious about them conserving bodily fluids 😂😂... especially when Paul and Channi do the tango. 😂😂
You are a very talented comedian Alex, and your reactions have brought this household a lot of joy! Thank you!❤️🤣
For the scenes under the black sun you were asking about, it doesn't look like regular black and white because it's not, it's in the infrared spectrum.
“I hope he mounts the worm successfully!” Alex
Legendary quote 😂😂
SPOILER:
The Bene Gesserit know that Jessica is a Harkonnen, the Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam is literally her mother.
It's him, LISAN AL-GAIB!!!
The blue thing that Chani had is from her father : Kynes. Or in the movie, her mother. She had a big grief and that blue thing is to remember her mom.
I gotta say, the Hamsterdance intro for the rage comment was *chef's kiss* that brought back so many random memories from my childhood
