I take a lesson to be more consistent - the key to ballstriking

  • Welcome to week 35 of my journey to scratch, where I take a golf lesson to be more consistent. In last week's video I took a test to evaluate how consistent my swing was and I found that I struggled with my longer irons, specifically with ground contact. Zach teaches me about impact, and its role for being more consistent with your ball striking.

I’ve deleted all my other golf tip subscriptions, Zach is the man, so clear, consistent and on point. He actually addresses the real world problems we suffer from (hitting fat, leaving the face open etc) in such a down to earth, straight forward manner whilst still creating a good looking functional swing. More please.

@ErndogGolf One interesting thing I've learned lately from your and other youtube channels is, what I would call a more hands and arm swing, is not necessarily a bad thing. I'm a much higher handicap than you but for the past 5 years I've been trying to take the arms and hands (aka what I define as timing) out of the swing and use the just the body and that may be somewhat possible for the best players in the world who have the flexibility to rotate like .001% of people, for the rest of us, we need more forearm rotation to a certain degree.
Using what you've learned and posted I've been absolutely striping the ball. By far the best I've hit my irons. I used to stay away from the 5 and 4 iron, now I'm able to play them.

Question for Zach if he’s monitoring the comment section - when you told Ernie to point his thumbs down, do you do this by ulnar deviating? How much ulnar deviation should you have? I’ve read that better players have flatter lie angles in their irons, so it’s my understanding that you don’t want max ulnar deviation?

    • @zachberhow.instruction

Too much overthinking. Too many peoples thumbs/wrists work side to side. The more the thumbs/wrists work side to side the more the leading edge rises. Pointing the thumbs down gets the bottom of the club to the bottom of the ball then just make sure it bottoms out in front of the ball.

Hi Ernie, I've been following your journey to scratch for a while now, and would have entered this contest if I had an account on Instagram. I'm an engineer with a passion for golf, too, and I plan to start taking some lessons from your remarkable instructor Zach very soon. I notice that you stopped including your Garmin R10 in your videos, but I just bought one and I'm looking for advice on how to train with it effectively. I think Zach's guideline is to try to get a club path of 3 to 4 degrees inside to out (with all clubs?) and a face angle of half that in order to get a penetrating push-draw, and to use the drill in this video to groove landing the club 3 inches in front of the toe of your lead foot, plus/minus one inch, and to use a couple of tees layed along the ground at the ball to detect when you're not making center of face contact.
How else do you recommend using the R10 to improve your swing?

    • @ErndogGolf
      @ErndogGolf  10 місяців тому +1

Hey man, thanks so much for the support! Yup, you said it best. Zach recommends a path of 5 degrees in to out, face at 2.5. Strike the ground near your lead foot for proper ground contact. Last is your face strike in relation to the ball. Ensure you’re hitting the center of the face by experimenting what it feels like to hit off the heel and off the toe. The garmin will help you with the path and face, but you’ll have to work on the other two with foot spray and tees! Check out week 34 for what I mean!

I know this is an old video hoping Zach can respond. Is a good feel to look in front of the ball and to the right to promote that ball first contact and path to the right. Since people tend to get steeper if they look in front of the ball?

Zach teaches a push draw. For you to his a push draw where the ball comes back to your target, your face to target angle needs to be half of your swing path to target angle. Ideally 5 degrees in to out, with a face 2.5 degrees open to target which is the same as 2.5 degrees close to the swing path

Hi is your objective here is to have a flat thumb down lead wrist at impact with glove logo or watch facing the target? And NOT having a fan open clubface in backswing & a hands rotating & deliberate closing of the face in the downswing? Are you also using your lead arm/hand as the dominate one in your swing?.
Your videos & your teacher are great.

Hey there! In the lesson from week 32 we talk a bit more about face control, so check that one out. You need a wrist hinge in the backswing to add loft, but you’re right, at impact, you want wrist flat pointing at the target (back to where they were at setup). You get there by rotating your forearms (not hands) and releasing the club. Check out that video and about halfway through we start talking about face control!

Thank you man! Zach is the man! He does not, unfortunately. I tried encouraging him to start one but he's pretty dead set on becoming the best instructor he can be. if you're more interested in that, check out Week 44. He drops some gems in there. His name is Zach Berhow

I work 7 days a week and I don’t want to come early or stay late.
Plus the hardest part about teaching is keeping my energy high to give every client my best lesson.
I get more fulfillment from my clients improving then myself improving.

Hitting with the back of the left hand is a weak position, can it work? of course, but you open yourself up to injury. You’d be better off keeping the left palm down like hammering a nail, it’s much stronger position, as in hitting a baseball.
