I always suffer with spherical shapes in UV unwrapping , due to its spherical shape Either I get clean UV islands but on the cost of distorted textures on some areas, or clean maps with less distortion but contains lots of seams borders here & there & here & there ! Lol .. I already rely on Mudbox & Substance Painter for such issues) I know you made that vid as easy starting for beginner, just tell your students to be optimistic for how lucky they are, things lately are easier than before. In Maya 2011 or older softwarws, UV mapping was serious pain in every bad place! O.o
It's good to build strong uvs, but I use mudbox/substance to paint over seams too. And I completely agree! UV mapping is so much easier now. Back in our day... lol! :)
Not sure what's not quite right with my attempt. When I select the top of the cylinder and deselect the bottom (Deselect holding down shift whilst drawing a marquee around the bottom of the cylinder) when I go to the next step and do the UV planar, the resulting UV map has already mapped the bottom and the top of the cylinder. I know this is 'two for the price of one' but I don't understand why both top and bottom have been selected.
Great tutorial! Got to make sure the uvmap1 is empty. You wouldn’t believe how many times I create a uv map and there’s information in the uvmap1, and my map ends up on a uvmap2. Like, so many times.
Thank you so much for this. I’ve been terrified of UV mapping for years and these videos finally got me through learning it. Somehow the way you taught it made it seem as simple as everyone says it is. Thank you!
Hello Ms. Phoenix, Maya has 3D paint tools to handle problems like crappy seaming. Do you prefer Mudbox because it's superior? I've never used the latter.
I have a cylinder combined with a cube. I started laying out UVs for the cube. But when I hit cylindrical mapping like what you did here, all of my UVs for the cube disappeared. Is this normal? will the UVs for the cube turn up later? How do I remedy this? Thanks.
thanks again. I'm using your videos as an application to my main course. your works seem very helpful as you show workflow and cover some basics which is essential for the beginners. may the blessings of Murmidon shine upon ya
I like your tutorial but I would like to see further explanation about Texel Density because this topic is so deep, do you recomend any tutorials there? I found an article on Artstation about this and its quite complex . I would like to see you breaking this down :)
Good teacher! I have a little problem at the beginning (damn soft selection) so i see aaaaall (well not all of course) the tutorial's traying to solve that problem and.. i return to you. Again, not good totorial, good teacher, that is different :)
Hi JC, that's a good question. The purpose of this video is to be an intro to UV Mapping fundamentals. I usually try to explain the foundations/theory of UV mapping before I start showing off all the tools. I trying to prevent confusion to new students who are trying to grasp UV Mapping for the first time. But yes, Texel Density is a great feature. :)
Thanks Monica :-).... What I found to layout the UV's to the correct size is I use the "LAYOUT" feature in Maya. It scales the UV's to the correct size according to the 0 -1 grid.
You know what's funny, Domenico? Sometimes that works, but most of the time it doesn't work for me. I always have to scale them individually anyway. I'm glad it worked for you!
thank you so much for these tutorials! theyve been a great help with my current project :) your channel is a goldmine of great tutorials ill def be checking out more!
One of the best explained tutorials Ive found so far. Thanks a lot!!! Not a lot of UV tutorials out there abt UV mapping
Thank you for your comment, Kaptn! I truly appreciate it. I agree, there aren't many UV map tutorials, so I'm glad this was helpful. :)
thank you very much, these videos are very helpful

Thank you so much,I also have one request can you make a video on uv mapping a complex object in Maya
I'm working on that now! I should have it up by next week. :)
And thank you for your support!
@@AcademicPhoenixPlus 😊😊😊😊
Thank you for doing this. Having just started to teach myself Maya, this was a perfect introduction to UV Mapping.
Thanks Mark! I appreciate your comment. UV mapping is essential for great textures, but can be hard to explain. I'm happy to hear this made sense! :)
I want to ask, why does all the UVs have to be in a 0-1 space? Why can't they be on multiple "Grids"? thanks
Thank You so much ma'am!!
You're really an amazing teacher and I am glad that I bumped into your channel for Maya! 😌
@Academic Phoenix Plus What's the actual difference between Sew and Stitch Together?
thank you so much for doing this series! UVs have been such a pain for me, but this makes things super straight-forward :)

Good tip, Al! Thanks for mentioning it. :)

Great to hear that it was helpful! Yey!!
Hello Ms. Phoenix, Maya has 3D paint tools to handle problems like crappy seaming. Do you prefer Mudbox because it's superior? I've never used the latter.
HI Keith, Mudbox will do the trick, but I prefer Substance Painter. :)
@@AcademicPhoenixPlus And I know neither. Yay. LOL

Loved the tutorial, one of the best!! if I have a question can I email it to you?
Jb
Why didn't you use the texel density feature in the uv toolkit to auto scale correctly the cylinder uvs?
Hi JC, that's a good question. The purpose of this video is to be an intro to UV Mapping fundamentals. I usually try to explain the foundations/theory of UV mapping before I start showing off all the tools. Academic Phoenix Plus oh, I see, thank you 🙂
thanks women. very useful
