RIP Marvelous Marvin Hagler, one of the greatest boxers ever

And Hagler legally changed his name to Marvelous, which is rather amazing!

Marvelous Marvin Hagler's legend continues to grow, as time goes on. Some fighters reputation decreases as time goes on, other increase. Hagler's has increased. Also, Hagler would have never thrown a fight, especially to Leonard. As time goes on, the consensus wisdom is this: Leonard waited Hagler out, waited until Hagler's skills eroded. then Leonard negotiated every single advantage for the fight: big gloves, big ring, 12 rounds instead of 15, and Leonard insisted on these advantages and gave Hagler extra money to make sure he got it. Also, Hagler, by then, had achieved greatest and had gotten respect. After beating Duran, Hearns and Mugabi, he was the undisputed pound for pound best, and was doing the Carson show and Right Guard commercials. In other words, Hagler didnt need Leonard anymore. If anything, Leonard needed Hagler because Leonard's legend had faded. Hagler was the man, and the problem that, is that he wasn't as hungry anymore. Hagler should have either not taken that fight, or fought that fight the way he fought Hearns--all out, not giving Leonard a chance to breathe. Anyhow, history is history, but it says alot about Hagler that even on that day, 50% of the fans and press thought he won, he was never hurt, stunned or wobbled, he wasnt cut or beat up in any way, and he looked like he could have fought for 15 more rounds. The one thing I thinked he lacked in that fight was hunger: his destruct and destroy wasn't there that night, and neither was his hands speed and reflexes. Leonard waited long enough for Hagler's skill and hunger to erode...just enough to ekk out a split decision victory. I cant think of anyone who believes Leonard would have beaten Hagler in their primes...not even Leonard. And, Leonard never cleanly beat Hagler. Lastly, whereas Hagler never embarrassed himself inside or outside the ring (no shame in losing to Leonard, one of the all-time greats), Leonard would go on to have embarrasing fights and losses to Terry Norris and the late Hector Mach Camacho. In fACT, lEONARD LAST LOST WAS A KNOCK OUT BY CAMACHO. Sad. Leonard also got hooked on coke and his post-Hagler career sucked. Hagler, on the other hand, has had his legend grow. Most I think dismiss the Leonard loss for the reasons I gave or dispute it outright.

You don't have to be hurt to loose a fight. You have more excuses than a cop shooting a running man in the back.

@@alokobaju8288 that is true. BUT, a champion should at least be dominated or beaten clearly. Obviously Leonard did not meet that threshold if after all these years, people are still split 50/50 on eho deserved to win.

Richard Steele. “You’re holding Ray! Quit holding Ray! Ray you’re holding!” Over 30 times. No points taken away. Hooked Hagler’s neck with left hand while burying right in his face. Over and over. Then Ray catches decision. Smh

Hagler was bad ass. And very smart to leave boxing after the Leonard fight. 70's and 80's boxing was incredible. Use to watch many fights in a packed bar in central Square. Good to see sweeney

I was in a restaurant here in Italy a couple weeks ago that had a signed picture of Hagler over the counter - apparently he's a pretty loyal customer, goes there all the time.
Pretty sure the dude still lives here in Italy, livin' the good life in his villa in Milan or something.

This fight was BRUTAL. It was so intense that you knew the fight wasn't going the distance.
    Tommy Hearns was a
skilled warrior who could throw hands with the best of them, but on that night Hearns ran out of gas and Hagler took him out.
Hagler eventually moved to Italy and became a movie actor in action films.
    Rest in peace, champ.

No, they made the Leone spaghetti westerns in Spain, in Italian, shot by an Italian director, Leone, soundtrack by an Italian Ennio Morricone, for English speaking audiences. You cannot top Leone and Morricone. It’s like Jagger and Richards, Lennon/ McCartney.

Its not a myth, Marvin told me himself. What a great guy, I'm blessed for having met he and his wife Kay back in the late nineties at Attitash Lodge in NH. He was still in shape. I got to express my dismay at Sugar Ray fight he lost by points. RIP Marvin. Thanks for your time at Attitash, a great memory.
His wife from Milan, Italy had told me I was an attractive and nice guy...that I needed more confidence in myself. Also said "Americans are too hung up on their appearances alone." I hope she is well.

Norris KO’d Mugabi ...Mugabi wasn’t the same after fighting Hagler, before he fought Mugabi..Hearns and Mugabi also put some wear on Hagler, he took a lot of hard shots from Hearns even though it was only 3rounds! Like that first round especially... and in round 2 and 3 Hagler ate a lot of hard shots before stopping Hearns in round 3..The ref checked Haglers forhead where Hearns busted Haglers head wide open, where it took 53 stiches to fix it , until Hagler destroyed hears in the 3rd round..The Ref in round 3 Richard Steele stooped the fight to have the dr look at it, Hagler knew he had to stop him quick, hears was wobbly legged still from the trading shots..Hagler stooped Hearns that fight took some out of Hagler there was a huge scar on Marvins fore head after the Hearns fight till the end of his life...Like Hearns broke his right hand on Marvins rock solid hard skull, in the 1st round. Hagler kept wading through Hearns punches and kept the pressure on and kept coming forward taking as much as he gave , from Hearns...Then Hagler he took Hearns completely out in round 3 after the dr checked the gash! Then after the Mugabi Hagler was urinating pure blood from the body shots he sub stained from Mugabi.. Before and especially after the Mugabi fight Haglers timing was a tad off, he wasn’t as sharp as accurate, and Leonard knew that. Hearns took some outta Hagler.. Leonard was live at the Mugabi fight noticed Hagler wasn’t as sharp as before..Then on top of that battle afterwards was the time to set up a fight..After he had had the fight after mugabi then yeah Leonard wanted to fight Hagler.. But Leonard didn’t want to fight Hagler when Hagler was at his best , like when he was under 30 before that Leonard wouldn’t dare fight Hagler at his best!
