I watched this fight live on TV in 1980. What this video fails to show is one of the most extraordinary scenes I have ever witnessed in a boxing ring. When the ref stopped the fight the English fans became so angry that they began throwing glass bottles into the ring. Hagler's cornermen formed a protective shield around their fighter as the bottles flew. If you are interested you can see this on other youtube videos of the fight.

@@peterbalac1915 Yes, he was gutsy and tough too, judging by the fact he was still on his feet after getting thumped heavily multiple times in that 3rd round. A bad decision to fight like that though, his defence wasn't great and his accuracy wasn't quite good enough, at least not when he was already slightly dazed by the good shots he'd taken which is also when he was most fired up and trying to go toe to toe. I've heard of Minter but he was a bit before my time, this and another fight I just watched are the first I've seen of him, but I notice he was a bit taller than average and perhaps that allowed him to adopt a rather open defence early in his career; his hands are too low and while against lesser fighters he was probably able to do fine like that, because they were kept at range more often than not, better opposition can get through. Perhaps also he was used to his toughness and strength doing the job, but Hagler was very tough and often evaded his shots in this fight.

Only recently a black fighter named Anthony Dirrell got destroyed by a white fighter called Caleb Plant in the US and before the fight Dirrell said he won't let no "white boy" beat him! Much of the crowd was made up of a well-known racist group. That's why the riots happened. Minter said he'd never lose to a black man. That's why they were there. It's also why we should condemn current black boxers who say they'll never lose to white guys. Because it encourages racial divide. We're here for the boxing. No one elects boxers to government. You know what? This was a terrific fight.
We tend to look at this as a blow out for Hagler because Minter choose to go to war a big mistake but Minter lasted as long as Hearns did and was not laid out on the canvas.
The deplorable behavior of the fans was despicable because it was Minter's corner that either stopped the fight or concurred with the ref to stop the fight. That cut was nasty and Minter had no chance.

Being from Boston, we followed Marvin’s entire fighting career. He was robbed of the championship when he fought Antuifermo. Judges ruled it a draw. Then Minter won the championship and Marvin had to go to London for his shot. He easily destroyed Minter but the English crowd were so pissed off they threw beer bottles and cans into the ring injuring a few people. Marvin never was able to stand there and get the belt and be crowned “Champion”. This bothered him and he used that snub as a chip on his shoulder. It motivated him to work hard against every opponent. He was a great champion. May he rest in peace.

Boxers say a lot of things out of pride and bravado, and I read in one of the comments further up that he'd been provoked somewhat by someone - American promoter or journalist or something - already calling Hagler the champion in the lead up to the fight. One can read too much into these things. There was no great scandal when Hopkins said he wasn't going to let a 'white boy' beat him in the lead up to the Calzaghe fight. Some of it is no doubt about stoking their own morale and hurt pride when people are writing them off, some of it is possibly down to wanting to cause controversy and drama.
