This demo shows how to work with the monoprinting process to explore the potential of mark making and how you can apply this to your own work. I will explore this further in future videos to look at how this will work with non abstract compositions, such as a still life, landscape or even portraits.
FREE monoprint now included with each order of the monoprinting booklet (limited supply)

This is a very simple process to try and the most important thing to remember is always use very small amounts of paint, you can always build up the layers but if you add too much paint at the start it will be difficult to work on the composition. Always try to work with good quality oil paint as the cheaper paint tends to be to be thin and contain too much oil. I use Winsor & Newton for this demo and find the quality ideal.

your videos are restful, without music, just the gestures and the noise of the paper tearing, the friction of the ink. I love it
Oh, stop it! Oil paint is basically the only art supply I don’t own at this point, and now i have to try this! Lovely result ❤
Thanks, my advice is to just use a few colours at first and go for a good quality paint, you don't need much so go for smaller tubes. Hope the technique works for you.
I'm learning to think from the inside out, like you do. Thanks.
Glad to hear it
thank you for sharing your creative process! The torn newspaper edges and fine skewer lines are a lovely contrast to the "messy" marks. Your videos are encouraging particularly because they are unintimidating. Your compositions are powerfully suggestive.
You are so welcome! Glad you enjoy the videos. I try to make them simple to follow to encourage anyone to try out the ideas for themselves.
I'm very inspired. And using oil paint! Never thought to try that....
You should!
Thank you for your wonderful inspirational tutorials. After a long break from painting, you have helped me to get creative again. Many, many thanks
Loving that you’re putting up more videos than I’m the past!
Glad you like them!
I love your method of mark making -- I find it lends authenticity to the finished piece. One should see evidence of the artist in a work of art. Thank you for making this demo.
Wow, thank you!
Thank you for your wonderful inspirational tutorials. After a long break from painting, you have helped me to get creative again. Many, many thanks
your process is fascinating and considering the simplicity, the results spectacular
Thanks
Gorgeous! I love black and white and I love line and printmaking. Exciting. Dynamic.
Ah wow! thank you so much for sharing this - this is what I've been looking for in my practice - really greatful!
Thanks. your'e welcome, glad you enjoyed this
Always inspiring Dan. And watching you at work and then the results you have made always make me want to go and make something as well. And I will! Thank you.
Go for it! Glad to know you enjoy the videos.
Boa tarde! Como sempre excelente.Simples mas muito fixe! Gosto mesmo.👍
Thank you.
It's great to see your techniques advancing and your finished works looking so much more refined! I enjoy every new video.
Thank you very much!
Such lovely marks, values and marks. Looks fun. Will need to try this. Love the smart laminated frame, great idea.
Thanks so much! 😊 Hope you enjoy trying this for yourself.
Wonderful simplicity….thank you
You are welcome!
Love watching you as always -- thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Outstanding !
Many thanks!
Thank you for sharing. Maybe you have inspired me enough to get my paints out the tub and onto paper. 🤗
Go for it!
Very very nicely made ✌🏽💕
Magnifique, j'adore
Thank you.
You are inspiring….thank you
You are so welcome
outstanding process and result as always. is there a video where you talk about the materials used for your work? I am especially interested in the paper, as I am always trying to do this on a budget, I want to buy suitable paper ( quality and haptic as well as looks and usability) in bulk..
Thanks, good to know you are enjoying the videos. It is important to me that I always try to show techniques that anyone can try, and they are always achievable through very little costs. I'm trying to include an Amazon product link with the latest videos that would give some indication of costs if this is helpful. With paper I recommend buying in bulk as you will save money this way. I would always try to buy good quality paint as some of the cheaper ones give poor results. Hope this helps, good luck.
I love the fine lines in your prints and have been trying to replicate this effect in my own work - without success. I have applied ink to various thicknesses of recycled plastic (such as a used potting soil bag). When draping it lightly over the paper to begin making marks, the paper surface grabs the entire sheet, transferring so much ink that any line work is obscured. Wondering what sort of plastic you are using here that stays light and seems less sticky. Thank you!!
Dan que tipo de papel usas ya que se limpia tan fácil? Amo tu trabajo
Utilizo una tarjeta lisa de peso pesado de 250 g / m2 o puedes usar papel de cartucho
Hi Dan, so enjoyable, thank you! How would you use this technique on a large scale? Having the printing plastic on the table and paper on top? Can’t think of any other way, say for A3 size?
I have done demos on a larger scale on paper and canvas.
Another interesting monoprint Dan. I see you wipe the template edges with a rag removing the paint. Does the rag contain a solvent, or paint thinner ? Thanks for these simple but effective demos Dan.
No, I would not recommend using any kind of solvent, just work with very small amounts of paint. The solvent or thinner would be too absorbed by the paper.
Realmente me encanta!!!
Beautiful. What happened at the end?
I think I may have had a camera issue at the end or maybe I forgot to press record. This does happen sometimes and it is VERY annoying, sorry about that.
Hi Dan, I've seen you use block ink in earlier vids, how does that compare to the oil paint you have used here, when you use your damp cloth to smudge? And thanks for a fantastic vid 👍😎
Block printing ink can be difficult, it has a very sticky feel so it is harder to use for this technique but you just get used to it. Worth a try.
I love your work. Why do you choose oil paint over acrylic ?
Sometime the slower drying time helps with this process and allows you to manipulate the paint for longer.
Very cool. I love your color paintings too, but sometimes the B&W ones are just so striking. I've never worked with oil paints before; but your videos have me wanting to try a little bit. I'm curious - how do you clean up after? Do you wash your hands with soap? Or use wipes? I assume you put your rag and qtips into landfill after using.
Thanks, glad you are enjoying the demos. Working with oil paint can be messy, you can get hand cleaners for removing oil paint and hand wipes, I sometimes use gloves but not when filming videos because it is difficult to use the camera. I try and avoid putting rags and paper towels into landfill and always recycle when possible, Iv'e even used waste materials in sculpture.
👍👍👍
Hi, How long does it take for the oil paint to dry?
Just a couple of days because you need to work with very thin layers.
Hey Dan-is your house filled with your artwork or do you sell a lot of it? I tend to sell some and give away a lot. Glad to hear Buzz is keeping you company. I'm being entertained by stray cats, squirrels, and birds.
Buzz is a very lively little dog, and very entertaining. I do plan to have a sale of original artwork when normal shipping services is resumed as things are particularly bad here in the UK at the moment (due to COVID-19)
Everyone, if you don't want to rip your paper with the tape you can either get the green or pink tape or you can take off some of the tack of the blue by pressing the tape onto your clothing before putting it down. Just an fyi
Good idea, I've done that.
Do you gesso the paper first?
Not always, this will depend on the oil paint or the thickness of the paper. Remove excess oil from the paint by spreading on absorbant card maybe allow to dry out a little.
Thank you
...the real thing, in an ocean of fakery... one of those artists whom one would like to have as a studio mate...
Thanks very much, it's always appreciated to recieve such positive comments and feedback.
