Abstract Seascape Monoprinting from collected beach debris.
Triptych composition on 200gsm paper
Thanks for all your comments and feedback for this video, it's encouraging to know that so many have enjoyed the process. I'm always disappointed by the amount of rubbish seen on the beach while out walking my dog, so to make use of it this way is of some benefit.
I will post another demo soon using the rest of the rubbish I collected that day. Maybe it will become a whole series of new demo videos "Britain's Rubbish" I hope it encourages others to make use of waste materials.
I just want to point out you should really wear gloves whenever collecting rubbish and if on a beach always make sure to check for discarded fish hooks. All the rubbish you see me use was thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before I used it.
Look out for my lazy dog Ben who makes a very brief appearance at the beginning of this video.

You have single-handedly changed my opinion about printing Dan. Being basically an impatient soul, I could never be bothered with all the hassle, especially as I don't have access to the equipment that you need to make 'proper' prints i.e. Printing press etc. But thanks to your wonderful little films that's all changed. You're definitely one of life's givers mate. Thank you.
One of the reasons for doing the videos was to show that you don't really need to buy lots of expensive equipment, I hope they help to inspire others to see how you can get creative from a few recycled materials and if it stops waste, it's a bonus. Thanks for watching and your positive feedback.
For relief prints (woodcuts, linocuts, or collagraphs,* for example) you don’t need a press. Just roll ink onto your printing plate, lay paper on top of the ink and use the back of a wooden spoon to rub the paper all over to transfer the ink. The one advantage is you can use the printing plate to make multiple copies, in various colors, or even add color by hand. These mono prints look like fun, and some of them look great, but I tend to prefer something a little more controlled or planned for my own art.
My ex, also an artist, bought a wooden item at an antique shop which was meant to place inside of a sock while darning it. One end was roughly shaped like the 3-D front of a foot. He used it instead of a wooden spoon. It fit nicely into the palm of the hand. Or, you might use a clean brayer. They come in various degrees of hardness, so a softer or harder one might work best on a particular printing plate.
*Collagraphs use printing plates created from various materials, with a shallow depth, glued to a backing, like a collage. It is best to use items of close to equal depth, smooth or with various textures.
@Dalton Jameson yup, I've been using kaldroStream for years myself :)
@Dalton Jameson Yup, been using kaldroStream for since november myself =)
@Dalton Jameson Yea, I've been watching on Kaldrostream for years myself :)
So inspiring! Love that you are also showing us how to reuse plastics and clean up our beaches :) Seriously, just love your amazing techniques. And your doggie is adorable!
Thanks so much! 😊
Really beautiful! Love the way you use everything you find to create art!

Thanks for this...and i do love your spirit of experimentation. what kind of plastic paper do you use to put paints on for the transfer? Is wax paper ok to use? And shopping bag plastic?
I loved seeing this set of prints emerge, thanks, Dan. 😍
I also wanted to thank you for picking up the rubbish - all of it was potentially so dangerous to wildlife.
very cool. this is a great way to bring attention to pollution. it'd be cool to do a series and keep the collected materials as part of an exhibit. it's a terrible problem and art is always a great way to communicate about these type of issues.
Thanks, it was a surprise how this turned out because I was using found materials and experimenting as I worked, I only used a small amount of the debris so another video will be filmed. Thanks for watching.
Merci beaucoup!!
Fantastic video Dan thanks
Hi. I discovered your videos yesterday and am loving your work. Subscribed immediately. Thank you so much for sharing 🙏🏼
Thank you
WOW! I LOVE THIS! TFS Hugs!
Your work is wonderful
Cute cute doggie!
An inspiring watch. Thank you for demystifying the art of printing. Your pieces are truly 'one offs'. Love your work.
Great video Dan! One little question, what are you using to smear the paint. It sounds a little like sand paper.
cute doggie thanks for sharing love how you used the string
STUNNING
Très chouette j adore. 🤩👍

Excelente, al final parece una imagen Ártica
you are genius Dan.. love everything you do.. huge respect for your design approach
And another stunning piece... Thanks for sharing Dan.
thanks for sharing your art and teaching us :)
Love your work Dan.
This is so lightweight 🤩😍
greatwork as always I especially like the effects of the string and the side of the bottle top
This is a better use of the discarded string (used by people fishing for crabs) than my dog trying to eat it and almost choked.
so cool!
Great effect from the strings. Thanks for another great video.
You are such a magician with paint. Takes my breath away watching you. The side of the bottle top was my favorite too
I worked with what I had found so some of the marks and textures were a surprise to me.
@@DanTirels that is such a great way of working, thanks for the inspiration.
Wow! Merci beaucoup! xx
Awesome
Another worthwhile, educational video. Thanks.
Wow! I got such a strong "Group of Seven" gnarled tree vibe from this one. I absolutely love it!
Another great video from you, Dan. It is such an encouragement and an inspiration to watch how you produce interesting and exciting images using minimal equipment and materials. It's also fascinating to watch you work through your creative process to achieve the finished results. Thank you, Dan. :)
Thanks, hope you get some good results trying this technique for yourself. I appreciate your comments and feedback.
Perfektní 👍👍👍
Outstanding use of beach trash. This would be a fantastic challenge for other’s to follow suit and publish trash from waterways. Rubbish to Art....Your approach using paints is very appealing to me. Thank you for sharing your inspiration.
Thanks, I hope this demo encourages others to make use of rubbish ! It's always disappointing to find so much of it on the beach while walking my dog. I didn't use all the rubbish I'd collected so I will be filming another demo video later. Thanks for watching.
Oh, Dan, you have no idea how much I love your work, and most of all, the way you work, and the materials you use. I found you a week ago om insta, and today watched your whole UA-cam gallery. I'm so inspired!!! Thank you very much.
Thanks so much, it's always good to get such positive comments and feedback I always like to hear from those who enjoy watching the videos. I have a new one on the way tomorrow. Thanks for watching.
@@DanTirels looking forward to it!
Great to see this 😎🎨🇺🇸
You should take time to sign your work. I'm inspired every time I watch your videos. Also, what do you look like?
I do sign some work, I will probably make an appear on camera in future videos although I do prefer to stay in the background a little.
This is such a supurb process. Thankyou so much for sharing. I am inspired to try it for sure. Tomorrow morning first thing.
You have amazing work. Thank you for the inspiration ❤️
OMG you are AWESOME 👏 congratulations
Cutest JRT ever! Never thought of doing this.
Thanks for sharing!
Superbe !!!!
I sure learned a lot from this video.....thanks!
Bravo! Maestro! Saludos desde Baja California Sur. México!
Fantastic ❤
Thanks 🤗
Lovr the seascape. Can you incorporate seaglass in another tutorial. Thanks
Fantástico!
Love your Works!!! 😍
Thank's Dan, Love the Idea to juse the rubbish of the beach.
Very cool. Long ago, when I was doing lithographic printing and etching we sometimes put leftover asphaltum into trays water normally used to presoak printing paper. We'd float it over turpentine. It would form fantastic images. We'd carefully dip printing paper on these patterns. Wonderful and fascinating images resulted. Try it if you haven't already. Old trick, I was doing these 40 years ago!
Sounds interesting, I used to enjoy creating my own marbled papers with a similar method (great for drawing on) Might film this for a future demo. Thanks for the comment.
Since I live on the Pacific Ocean, and also have a (19 year old) Jack Russel, You have really grabbed my attention with this one. My husband collects trash from the beach almost daily, so I always have plenty of fodder out in the trash can for my own beach debris seascape. I can't wait to get started! Thanks for sharing your creative efforts. Question: You've not mentioned priming your paper with gesso. I'm guessing that's just a given with the oil paint.
Thank you, I am pleased to ear that you are making good use of those beach debris, I find a walk on the beach very inspiring but it is sad to see the amount of plastic waste on our beaches. The paper I use is a thick smooth card or cartridge paper 250gsm, this can be primed with a primer or a spray of white acrylic will be OK. I do not always prime the paper and it has little or no effect.
really like it!
Amei!!!!! Amei toda sua criatividade e harmonia👏👏👏👏👏⚘🎨🖼🎨🖼🎨!!!
Hello Dan,
I watched this video on a 65" TV screen
That's impressive. You should try a large format on canvas or paper
I've never seen ot on a screen that big, can't imagine what my grubby fingernails look like ! I will be filming some large scale work in a few weeks, I have some big canvases to work on. Thanks for watching.
Dan Tirels the tell of true artist is their fingers. The more paint or ink, the more the heart is in the art.
You have got me monoprinting Dan... Great ideas and inspiration... I am using acrylics but was wondering how long the oil paint takes to dry when applied like this... Cheers Dan, another fine video.
Thanks, I suppose that is the downside of working with oil paint it can take a while to dry. I find it best to let them dry naturally so leave them in a warm place, depending on the weather they can take up to a week to completely dry. The damp British weather doesn't help !
pretty amazing!
Inspirador! Como siempre. Genio y genial
Thank you so much.
Incredible!
my favourite so far - will be doing this with acrylics (solvents are a no-no for me) thanks once again for the inspo x
I will try to make some demos using acrylic paint in future, it does work but you need to use a retarder to slow the dry time.
@@DanTirels Yup - I've got to know the workarounds and limits well lol I love the idea of using what you found on the beach - I used some of my roadside litter pickings to help make a painting earlier this year.
Simplesmente genial. Tudo...!
Love, love, love this one. ,! strong feeling of angry sea 🌊🌊🌊
Oops... From 😁
👍🏻😁🎨✨🇺🇸
I love it. Thanks for the treat of watching.
I have a mixed breed doggie and she sports a beard too. Retriever and I thought terrier. But no- I’m told it would be Portuguese Sheep Dog who sport beards. I see your guy looking very Sheep Doggish too!! Australian S. And Portuguese S ?? He’s handsome!!!
And I am a Printmaking Artist too😁thanks for inspiration-
I really like the idea of being at the beach - always my favorite place -
and it would have felt even more wonderfull to make the whole printing- painting-creating process on the beach ... but maybe too mezzy ?
Working outdoors is something that I hope to film but I think this may have to wait for the weather to improve.
Wunderbar.
Very inspiring to watch, thank you! I only wonder why you use a double plastic sheet, and remove one clean layer later? Or do I miss something there? Hope to see more of this.
Thank you, the films are edited and I often add more paint or use a different sheet during the making of this demo.
Hey Dan! Let me start by saying thank you for sharing your work and techniques. You are a big source of inspiration!
Im really into making one-liners of faces. When I saw this technique I immediately wanted to try this out, and combine it with my own style. I already made some nice pieces, however the stickyness of the oil paint feels different from how I see it in your videos. Therefore, Im wondering whether you use (or prefer) a specific type of oil paint and plastic. And whether/how long you wait for the oil paint to dry?
I really hope you can help me out! Love your vids and the positivity in the comment section :)
You need to try different brands of paint, I use Daler Rowney, or Winsor & Newton, use good quality as the cheaper paints can be a bit oily, always use a very small amount, you can always add more later. Experiment with different types of plastic, you will get some interesting results. Hope this helps. Thanks for your positive response to the video.
Awesome, you are very creative! Could this be done with acrylic paint too?
Thank you for your demonstration. It's very interesting and useful. I'd like to know how long it takes for your printing to dry using oil paint.
Reminds me of the World War I trenches
People have said that before.
😍👏👏👏👏🎨
Another wonderful composition. Where did that "s" in the middle image come from? It appeared after you printed wit the red rubbery....... thing.
I hadn't noticed that ! It's just a random mark made by an old McDonald's balloon that was amongst the rubbish collected that day.
WOW !
dan i am always surprised and fascinated buy you work,2 question how to you keep your paint from smearing more when you use the sponge, and do you sell any of your work i would like to own a piece, thanks
Thanks, when using the sponge only use a very light pressure, don't press down on the surface or the effect will be ruined. I have a shop on my website with a few pieces for sale. Thanks for the interest. www.dantirels.co.uk
Can this work with acrylic paints?
You could buy a Gelli plate for not too much money and that might help you make prints a bit easier.
what is the name of the doggy?
This is Ben and he has his own instagram profile (@ben_jackrussell_)
😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚
the interest of the video has pushed your black nails into the background. I didn't even see them ahaha
I will cancel the manicure then !
What paper is that with oil on iT???
I'm using a heavyweight cartridge paper 200gsm I find it works because the oil paint is applied in very thin layers so there is no need to apply a gesso. I have tried this technique on thinner paper but it is sprayed with a base coat of white acrylic.
Dan Tirels Thanks for answer!
Bravo
Merci beaucoup
