    It has been over 30 years since I sold my Austin Healey 100-6. Its still one of the poorest decisions I ever made. I would love to have a 3000 Healey (little bigger than the 100) today. Nothing comes close to the great sound, nor is there anything that corners nearly as good.

    It WAS a great car! Better than my 1960 model, later called the Mk I.

    I bought my first car from a friend of mine who was selling his 1968 Healey 3000 Series 3 mark3 for about $700 It was in British Racing Green and I still have that car which went a body off the chassis and totally rebuilt, including the motor, gearbox, front and rear suspension, and has been repainted in Colorado Red with grey carpets and seats with red piping. Also had Koni Shock Absorbers fitted which improved the road holding tremendously. The Walnut dash board had stared to split so a new dash was made from Rosewood and has the highest gloss finish I have ever seen. As it has been totally rebuilt and everything is been rebuilt or replaced, the Speedometer now reads 5000 Miles completed and comes with all the factory fitted accessories , including a zero mileage engine and the entire service history it not for sale at any price. Bloody great to drive on a nice sunny day with the top down and the rumble of that exhaust

      Thank you Stephen, much appreciated. Yes getting the Healey fully restored to Concours condition was a labour of love, and a large percentage of the work must go to the Healey Factory in Melbourne Australia. I dont keep the Healey at home for obvious reasons, but its kept in a 24 hour round the clock lock up garage complex. I have three immobilser systems installed, so there is no way that a thief could even hot wire it , as it still would not start.. I dont know how to upload photos or even music onto You Tube for that matter, so havent really bothered with it. It gets used most weekends, when the club goes on a days outing to where ever and then back to the lock up and put away for another day.

    • @stephenferguson3861
      @stephenferguson3861 10 років тому

      nothing wrong with that! I as a half ass mechanic basically put a toggle switch under the dashboard many years ago which no one knew was there if you tried to hot wire it but that was simple and I didn't live in the area, it seems you have a truly "new age" electronically I mean, immobilizer systems I commend you again

    My first car was a 1960 AH bugeye sprite, really fun car. I traded it in for a 1963
    AH 3000. The rocker panels were rusted away, but it was great fun while I was in college. One of my friends had a 1969 GTO. They were obviously different drivers, but I liked the way my Healy handled corners the best.

    The only extra passengers who could fit in those rear seats are children under the age of 8, but only for local rides. The wind would be very rough on them if you went faster than 30 mph . One adult could sit back there sideways for a short ride, like dropping them off at their house or at a store . The seats are just cute additions, just slightly larger than the "rear seat" in a TR-3 .

    Actually compared to American cars at the time (pre 1972 before they went to thinner gauge steel and the oil crises which forced them to cut back on quality) the Euro cars where way below par. They had newer tech (which you could find on US cars but not all of them) but the build quality was horrid, many still used 6 volt electrics, the wiring was sub standard, the engines where unreliable as was the gear box. American cars while didnt have good over all body work the drive train was solid.

    Used to have a Healey 3000 in the UK and I must say it was in bad condition. US cars have had a much better chance to survive and I would certainly, if I was going to buy such a car again, buy only in the US. Nothing would delight me more as to to a round trip of the US and Canada in such a car as this. The E type Jag killed the Healey. The last Healeys had a Rolls Royce 4 litre engine originally designed for the military. But it was saddly dropped.

    Pretty car…couldn't listen past the "ram air" comment though (!) Lots of inane comments here about poor English engineering and manufacturing. There are pluses and minus to any margie, but to argue that American cars (manufacturing and engineering) were superior to British iron in the 60's is just not true. In terms of engineering, the Brits were doing seat belts, fuel injection, disc brakes, independent rears and genuine aerodynamics etc long before us…and you might remember Lotus forcing all those Indy cars to go mid engine to have any chance of beating them. In terms of manufacturing the best things about the British equipment was the excellent castings, everything was designed to last forever and be renewed. They liked to use unsealed bearings so you could grease them and they'd never wear out (sealed for life bearings fail when the grease leaks out). Who was the first manufacturer to start using disc brakes in the 50's? Meanwhile, American companies lost their way in the 60's and were copying Europe. How about the Corvair…Italian body, Porsche engine? I won't wast any more space here…but I wouldn't beat up on those Brits too much. You still see more Landrovers off road around the world than Jeeps.

    • @theglen43
      @theglen43 10 років тому +1

      listen I love British cars especially Healey's but lets get real. Lever shocks, king pins and non syncro first gear in transmissions is a joke in 1967. They never put money into the Healey because the license agreement with Healey was not renewed. They sold the most Healey's ever in 1966 with no changes except for added marker lights. Too much politics and jealousy in British circles killed the Healey 3000 and it was a shame because if they invested and modernized the car they would have tripled their sales and competed on the level of the Datsun Z which Nissan built as a competitor to the Healey just as British Leyland was abandoning the market.

    British engineering and manufacturing is not really a selling point. Remember back in the 50's and 60's and even today the British could draw a picture of a great looking car but their workmanship was like worse then Chinese Built quality, at least the Chinese have never purposely tried to build a car as shotty as possible to get back at the company or boss during union negotiation.
