Well, I have 21 years on the job, in busy city, Im 42. A few things
    1. Don't expect to get rich. 2. Be prepared to be scrutinized on everything you do. Everyone else thinks they know your job better then you do.
    3. You will be a different person in 10 years.
    4. You WILL get injured on the job in one way or another.
    5. Stay in shape, its a great way to relieve stress and and to stay healthy.
    6. Stress is huge, never hesitate to talk about your issues with other Coppers. You have to vent now and then.
    7. Were human too, you will make mistakes, just alway put officer safety#1
    8. Treat people with respect, you never know who your talking to.
    9. Never judge people by their background or skin color. Im white and my best partner hands down was a big black guy, we were like Crockett and Tubbs.
    10. Your not saving the world, don't think when your off duty the city is going to crumble, enjoy your off time.
And always stay safe, stay positive, stay in shape and put in for every training thats available. Oh yea one more thing, if you can go Federal, better pay, benefits and you an travel a lot.

You should know: You won't be home for holidays, barbecues, your kids birthday party's.You should know- though you will save life, take life and perhaps give your own,you cannot control this. You should know you will sit in a crowded room and feel alone-we do not have the luxury of sheep. You should know as a police officer you're closer to jail than you've ever been.Finally-be safe, let your instincts prevail..watch people's hands, eyes and words cannot hurt you.Stay tactical, stay alert and stay alive.God Bless.

I guess I should say what I tell others. Being a police officer isn't just a career, it consumes you and you simply are a police officer forever, even when you retire the cop in you never leaves because that is who you are, not just what you are. You are subject to numerous tests, written tests, oral interviews where you are intimidated, physical fitness tests, psychological tests, lie detector tests, doctor exam and IF you pass the academy you go through all that again and put on at least a one year-18 month probation. If you don't make it do not feel bad. Many people don't and in fact we released many people who just were clearly not assertive enough or there as back up when needed...it truly is a calling. Remember, as people run out of buildings because of robbery, burglary or someone out of control, your instinct will tell you to run in and eliminate the threat as others run out for their lives. You realize you put a vest on before duty, I took that time to also pray for direction and safety so I could come home to my kids. It is everything only more than you think it may be. Good friends on the force but not many friends that are not police. You will find that you only trust other officers and they trust you. It is a life changing career and you come home each day feeling exhausted because you don't ever have time to not pay attention to what is happening around you or fellow officers... In all though, If you are single it could be a good job. If you are married or plan to be, date for a couple of years. The stress effects not just you but everyone in your house.

This guy is full of shit...…...it is the best job in the world except maybe a fire fighter.....this putz is doing what a lot of cops do and try to elicit praise and sympathy and even maybe get a little poor me hero worship thrown upon themselves......and if he really found the job this difficult then he is weak and a lightweight and should never have been a cop...

Kids can make it from highschool to the academy, but it's very rare that a kid from highschool will have sufficient life experience, involvement in their community and dealing with people, maturity and carrying themselves like an adult with a cool head and understanding of human nature, as well as a deep desperation to put all of their chips in to this basket in being a cop. That's what police forces are looking for; physically fit yes, desire to be a cop yes, but personality, life experience, work experience, are you willing to put all of your chips in to the cop basket? Are you willing to wait years (potentially) to get accepted in to the academy and to improve yourself in all areas constantly in order to do so? That's what it takes.

    • @06livefast
      @06livefast 7 років тому +5

Gabba Shanking No, it's a completely different occupation. IT will help like going to college would help, but it's more LIFE EXPERIENCE that they look for ie community involvement, volunteer work, ability to communicate with different personalities, which would pertain more to being a cop than going in fire fights and living in tents in a desert.

About the first thing he said... you do not have to be 21. In some states, yes, but it depends on the department. For example, the Florida Highway Patrol, Miami Dade PD allow you to be a cop at 19, one of a fee depts in FL. In my state, you can be a part time cop at 18/19, and full time at 20/21. In Pittsburgh, PA, you can be a cop at 18. You just have to have the proper credentials, such as a certain amount of college credits or graduate from a police academy and be certified (which you can do at 18)

There are other paths of course but just some tips! Also dont rely on the fbi as a career because it’s not guaranteed, establish another career and be good at it. Good luck!

I actually really want to be a police officer, even in Chicago. Even if not there, somewhere I can help the community. This job isn’t like any other job, it challenges you day after day while still teaching you life lessons. You can experience different situations every day, even making someone’s day. I am honestly a very athletic person and at 15 years old have never gotten a detention or referral at any of my schools. The only thing that concerns me is my small size, so seeing small, female cops gives me hope. Wish me luck out there! 👮🏻‍♀️

I'm determined. Yes, we all make mistakes. Some of which I honestly forgot. But I need help with a question. I already graduated college, but for audio engineering and now in student loan debt. But I want to go to a different college for criminal justice, maybe for 2 years. I've attempted the ASVAB twice without study (I suck at math without a calculator and being timed). Am I doing something wrong in wanting to be a cop? and is criminal justice the way to go? It's 2017, and I need answers. Sorry to be so demanding, but to me? it's determination!

God's Son those are great questions and we do not have the answer for them since we don't specialize in that field. What we suggest is going to our local police department and ask those very important questions to a seasoned police officer. Thank you for the reply. I shall do so sir/ma'am. I consider myself to being 79% of the way toward pursuing a career as a police officer as of this reply. What will be a part of that percentage is going to the actual police department in my area. With that being said, I've already spoken to many police officers at my current job. They tell me to go to school, some say that the department desperately needs employees, etc. I work with customers on a daily, so I see many people who are genuine, many people who have had a bad day, and in between (some very stressful situations with theft as well). I understand that not many departments require a criminal justice degree (but to most, it's considered a bonus so-to-speak). That's my only gripe; I just don't want to be placed in a situation where I am unable to provide for a future family and just live peacefully. Again, I will contact my local police department; and children, that doesn't mean for you to call 9-11. Thank you for all that you do.

God's Son I have done enough research. I have talked to 4 to 5 different police officers and went on a ride along with them. All of them said to DO NOT get a degree in law enforcement or criminal justice because being a cop is not for everyone. If being a cop doesn’t work out for you, you should have a different degree than law enforcement or criminal justice to fall back on and pursue another career. Just putting my two cents out there.

please reply. I'm 19 years old in college, I have been doing well and have struggled alot. My heart wants to be a police officer, and I'm willing to put everything on the line to be an officer. I wanted to know what I'm able to do in college to get those qualities to become an officer, because I'm in a leadership program helping out communities. I want to take classes in college to be ready to become a officer, and I'm definitely ready to put in 18 month of training in the academy. I'm just wondering if I have that chance, because hearing it as 1 out 1000 get chosen just broke my heart right now. I won't give up, I want to work hard and wear that badge with honer. my only fear is if i put so much effort and fail. but my mindset is not a fixed mindset, it's a growth mindset. I'm willing to put everything on the line.

We think it very important to research the job of police officer, even spending some time with a lot officers and asking them questions... real life, real world experiences... You may even want to see if there's a Vader program for your age group.

What we can say, make sure to be absolutely honest about that situation when you are asked if you ever been in trouble in the past. Make sure to align your life with your goal to be a police officer and stay out of trouble. It wouldn't hurt to go ahead and talk to a few seasoned police officers now and really get a inside look on what it takes. We learned arrest techniques, traffic laws, radio skills, and a ton more. If you're really sure that you want to do this, I highly suggest doing it right away; I wish that I've done it earlier (I am 17 right now). Be advised, it is paramilitary so they will yell at you and discipline you if they have to -- but my department doesn't yell at us much anymore unless we scew up.

Okay. I currently am 16 years old and i am from Greece. I would love to live in the US, become a US citizen and become a police officer. How many years this procces will take to complete if i get to the us by the age of 19? And last but no least , do i even have any chances of accomplishing this dream ?

    • @Awiseway
      @Awiseway  7 років тому +1

Savrawars We are not exactly sure how long the process will take for you to finalize your citizenship but as far as applying for the LAPD, you can be in the process of getting your citizenship and once you are hired you have to complete your citizenship with in three years after your academy graduation.
As far as your odds, like Sergeant Richter said, it's 1 out of a 1000 applicants but we think it would be a shame for you not to at least try and pursue something you feel strongly about! One thing is for certain, if you don't try you are guarantee to never have a chance at!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR RESPONSE!!!One final thing. Is it hard to become a permanent resident in the US if you dont have a university degree for example or a higher education level? I mean, right now i speak 3 different languages Greek,Russian and English. The next year i will be in the final year of high school and if i want i would be able to go to university. However i want to know if its going to be easy for me to be able to live in the US without a university degree. I am also considering joinning the US ARMY. I know you probably dont have the answers for these questions but any feedback would be appreciated!!!!! THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME!!!!!

4 year degree at a US university should get you a green card, makes you 23, depending on the agency; US citizenship may be required (eg All of Texas) that makes you 28, 20 years service makes you 48 so pretty easy in theory

For anyone interested in becoming a police officer the easiest way is to try and join the Police reserves for what ever town you are interested in. Once you become a reserve officer you are officially a cop. The difference is that you are part time and if you deiced that you do not want to counite down that carrier path you can leave. This is the best option because it allows you to do the job as an officer and you dont have to be fully committed to that as your life's choice for work. The reserves also have a easier academy for those worried about going through that. A reserve academy mainly is classroom oriented and not really a drill instructor type setting. The academy is still challenging. You are tested hard on what you have learned and in addition to that you will only be a part time sworn officer so you often have to pay for the academy yourself (Departments pay for full time officers). If you do decide to go full time the departments hire there reserve officers first before opening it up to civilians. I myself have just received my degree in criminal justice and am looking at a large amount of departments and reserve departments.

Angelo P. Just remember that this are the standard of the LAPD in LA County. It is very feasible that your local police department in the area you wanna sign up for doesn’t have these types of requirements. It would be very wise to speak to our local police department or even a police officer about the requirement to become a officer!

What you should know is the Supreme Court Ruling in 1981 (Warren v. District of Columbia (1981) which ruled that the Police have no general or legal duty to protect individuals or the General Public. This was based on the Public Duty Doctrine. Police do not owe a specific duty to provide police services to citizens or protect them. Police officers are revenue agents for their City.

Sincerely appreciate your thoughts. It is imperative that those wishing to serve in the uniform of any City, State or Federal police capacity and/or auxiliary to thoroughly READ and RESEARCH and FIND for themselves any and/or all court rulings, codes of conduct and/or latest supreme court rulings pertaining to this specialized profession. Where ones authority derives from and the special ability to do this profession (7/24) may not be for everyone. I do not make my comments so as to demotivate a possible future recruit or future officer of this unique profession, but to OPEN their eyes and mind to a profession which but only a few can muster the ability to not only do but to do well. Those who can adapt, overcome and persevere AND THINK and ACT decisively and reasonably in a quick, fast paced environment (on their feet) will have partners for life in a brotherhood (and sisterhood) organization which is second to none. Happy trails to those who will make good officers. All gave some. Some gave all!

Talk to different cops in your area to get real world experienced answers, start getting into the best shape now, maybe even check to see if you have a police cadet program in your area. Every part of your life should reflect your goals to being a police officer.

I tried for the military but they thought I was a self harmer cause I had a few scars that didn't look right I guess. It hurt a LOT to be dismissed on something that was not only untrue but because it made me feel like I wasn't good enough. I wanna try for the LAPD now. I want to eventually become a homicide detective. I'm only 19 now but I'm getting into the mindset. I hope they don't think the same as the military did. I was 16ish when I tried applying, so I was fragile and couldn't explain myself. I was crying so hard my head throbbed. I think I'm better now, a bit less shaken. Hopefully the LAPD will see that cause I know I would've been a hell of a solider.

man, most of the people apply to law agencies 'cause they wanna get money and live as life-king, but when they get appointed to the academy they just realize that there's no the easiest way to earn money for nothing. You think like 'oh you just go 'round the hood and do tickets', though it's not really what it's like. Some of them don't even know how many cops die per year, which is horrible. SO, if you feel that it's your's -- grab'n'go.
