Derek you need to update your info on the pricing. The top model is €41k. The Tesla model 3 is cheaper. The next model down is €39k. You haven’t added the €1950 dealer chargers to your pricing commentary.

Great car really happy with our purchase, owner from NZ. Fantastic to drive, qualify is impressive when viewing. Price is much cheaper in NZ. Driving distance around 480-500km around town 380-420 open rd. Towing 750kg, battery lithium iron phosphate ( blade battery) one of the safest batteries in production, don't listen to garbage about fires by internet trolls only heating up to 30-60 degress when exposed to the atmosphere.

A brilliant summation, as usual. I have seen some reviews of various Chinese models that had clear problems in winter road conditions. Sensors that cannot get blocked, adaptive functions that get problems and heat problems in the passenger compartment. Would be interesting if you got a long-term test with the car and could see how the Atto 3 copes with the Irish requirements.

owned one in Australia for few months. My thoughts the inside is revolutionary, the strings, the rotating screen, colour schemes etc actually works better than drab grey interiors you find in most cars. Plenty of room inside and boot area so comfort levels are not bad. Minor peeves that it is a bit heavy and in spite of adequate power, you can't call it sporty. The pedestrian warning eg. the whizzing sound that kicks in at low speed takes some getting used to. It comes with rubbish cheap tyres and first thing you should do it is change them to something better of similar specs as it will improve your driving experience a lot. Overall not a bad car as you will save a lot of dough compared to other brands in the market.

In the beginning the pedestrian warning sound didn't bother me at all. But since I've started to drive the vehicle as an Uber car, it literally started to do my head in.
I then saw on another review how easy it was to disconnect it, only took 3 minutes, and wow what a huge difference it made. It's not mandatory to have it in Australia, so I thought it's worth being extra careful in a shopping centre car park. It now sounds like a an EV should and that means quiet 👍

BYD look set to sweep the boards in the BEV market especially with their luxury interior finish and superb traditional control layout with proper physical buttons and knobs. Good factual review Derek as ever. 80kw CCS seems the only drawback. You like the pine forest as a film location. Why would anybody buy a smaller model 3 saloon car when this quality is available in a larger CUV format with a quality interior and better driver ergonomics. All the gizmos included too.

I had a test drive in an Atto3 a few weeks ago (in England) & agree with nearly everything you said in your review. It's a very well spec'd car with a Heat Pump as std across the range & that safer LFP Blade battery. However, the absence of auto wipers is a bit strange. The problem I have with this, & every other EV on sale in the UK, is the price. This car sells for £10,000 less in Australia & NZ (& even less in some other countries) so why so much more in the UK & in Ireland?
I'm looking to get our 1st EV later this year but it won't be a new one. A 1 or 2 year old Kona is what I will be looking for which should be £16k less than the price of a new one & maybe even less once the new Kona goes on sale in the summer. The Atto 3 might be a good used buy in a year or two but it's too new for me to consider this time around.

@@mtumasz i am not sure of the legal standing in Ireland either but in Thailand, Australia and NZ ( where the Atto 3 is selling very well ) there’s currently no legislation to legalise the pedestrian warning so many have disconnected or reduced the volume.
If BYD gave other sounds than the current 2 options, both very annoying, or reduced the volume it would be less controversial, have you heard it ?, it is very loud, a beeping sound would be preferable.

As you know it was the Yuan Plus in China, probably still is actually. Has that Dragon face and the scales on the outside of the c-pillar. There is also a NFC card you can use as the key plus the App but take either NFC or Key fob as has been found can lock the car with your phone in the car and then not be able to get back in. Interesting you have the 3 trims we have only one which is basically the top level trim in Ireland, can only pick colour, red is my favourite colour. No rain sensing wipers unfortunately sorry Derek. @@NevoEVReviewIreland I think you need to do more research into BYD in china

    • @murraynickel6377

Haha! Yes it does pay to do the research. The video I saw of BYD fires had so many factual errors I decided to do more research myself. In the video the narrator tries to identify the burning models but gets it wrong more than right. This was my first clue that it was poorly researched. It was a very emotive video that was light on facts. Eg: number of fires per 10000 BYD EVs on the road in China vs (for example) Tesla in USA. It would be easy to put together an equally scary video of Tesla's catching fire, or diesel vehicles, etc but without comparative numbers it's a bit meaningless. Here's what I understand after trying to research this a bit:
      1. BYD has been making BEVs and PHEVs in China for quite a few years, beginning with the E6 in 2009.
2.Until the last 3 years or so, all their BEVs used NMC type batteries and they have just recently begun to launch LFP versions of their PHEV models.
      3. BYD has until very recently sold more PHEVs in China each month than BEVs and all these PHEVs used NMC batteries.
      4. So most of their vehicles on the road in China will have the less safe NMC chemistry.
      5. All of their exports to Europe, Australia etc have LFP Blade batteries, which BYD have proven to be much safer - see their nail penetration test comparison video of NMC vs LFP Blade battery.
      6. The video I saw showed mainly Tang and Han fires. Although these models are sold in Europe and elsewhere, people may not be aware that they are not EV-only models in China. All of the Han vehicles shown, except one, where PHEVs with NCM batteries as they had front grilles which the BEV version doesn't have. The narrator fails to point this out, so viewers could easily assume these are the same as the ones coming to Europe. With the one BEV Han model shown on fire I couldn't tell whether it was a newer version with the LFP battery or an older NMC version. Until very recently all BYD Tang's had a front grille so it isn't so easy to know whether those shown were BEV or PHEV versions, but based on the sales dominance of the PHEV in China and the predominance of the PHEV version of the Han in the video I would guess that most of the Tang fires shown were also PHEV versions with NMC batteries.
      7. One of the Han models shown was strangely identified by the narrator as an Atto 3 (Yuan Plus in China). One of the burning Tang models was also identified as an Atto 3. These obvious errors were inexcusable and obviously misleading.
      8. It showed another SUV fire the narrator identified as an Atto 3 (Yuan Plus in China). This was actually a BYD Yuan, which DOES look very similar from the front but is actually a smaller, older model and has a somewhat truncated rear compared to the Atto 3 (Yuan Plus). It is not a BEV-only platform so the PHEV version will have NMC battery chemistry and probably the older versions of the BEV model do too. This looked like an older version of the Yuan (there has been a minor facelift in newer versions) so is most likely an NMC battery.
      9. Why is this distinction between LFP and NMC batteries important? Because aside from a few old BYD E6's that were imported into the UK Taxi/ride share fleet, all BYD exports to Europe, Australia etc have been with LFP Blade batteries and testing has shown these to be much safer. The BYD Dolphin has been for sale in China for over a year and the Yuan Plus for at least two years but, despite claims to the contrary, the video I saw shows no fires in either of these popular models. These are both EV-only platforms with only LFP Blade batteries since their launch.
      My conclusions:
      1. The video I saw was high on hype and low on facts, full of errors, and - I suspect, deliberately misleading.
      2. It's quite possible that BYD have a genuine issue with their NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) batteries, especially those in their PHEVs. Although fires in these PHEVs could be started by issues in their petrol engines. We simply don't know. What we do know is that this is an issue within China only and so the video I saw was really relevant only to a Chinese audience. But it was clearly aimed at a western audience.
      3. I think BYD deserve kudos for being the only EV brand to switch so rapidly and completely to LFP batteries. Tesla have moved model 3 and Y RWD/base versions to LFP but Long Range and Performance versions remain NMC.
      4. If you want to make a video about battery fires that's relevant to the western audience then make one about LG EV batteries. LG Chem (or whatever they call themselves today) of Korea have by far the worst track record for battery fires and supply many major car manufacturers including GM, Ford, Hyundai, Kia - all of whom have had expensive and embarrassing recalls as a result (Chevy Bolt, Hyundai Kona, Ford Mach E, etc). So what have these responsible, trustworthy manufacturers done? Well, aside from Ford, they've continued their sourcing of NMC batteries solely from LG of course. Ford have diversified their sources and announced that they will switch to LFP batteries asap. Meanwhile LG have announced a multi-billion investment to switch all their manufacturing of batteries to LFP. Would they be doing that if they were 100% confident in the safety of their latest NMC batteries? I don't think so. Would I buy a new EV from Hyundai, Kia or GM? Absolutely not. Well done to BYD, Tesla, and Ford, who seem to care about their customers and their reputations.
      5. Mix a little "fear-of-the-new" (BYD) with a little racism and you get a great click-bait formula and a viral video. Conversely, how many raving UA-cam reviews of Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, Kia EV6, Kia Soul, Chevy Bolt, etc have raised a question over the safety of their LG batteries? Zilch.
