I was surprised when I first saw a BYD *_car_* (a white one in London in February 2022), because until then, I only knew BYD as an electric *_bus_* manufacturer (BYD has supplied electric bus chassies to Alexander Dennis for their Enviro200EV electric single decker and Enviro400EV double decker).
Just got mine after 5 weeks of waiting after ordering here in the Netherlands 🇳🇱 and I am loving it every single moment. I am done with overpriced German cars.
@bmw325touring you should ride one of these Chinese cars which are coming to Europe. And you will feel no difference between them and German cars. So if you can get all those options and quality for a cheap price then why would you pay extra to get all those good things in German cars? Just for name? Because it is a Mercedes or audi that's why €15000 extra for all the options what you can get in Chinese cars. Non wonder Tesla is in panic and you can get now model Y which was in Jan 2023 €65,700 is today less than €50,000. I am done paying only for a brand name.. it is stupid. Like some people must have iphone doesn't matter what.
I'd happily buy one of these over a premium priced Kia, Hyundai or even VW! It has everything I'd need in a car and the interior design is fantastic, range is just right and the battery technology appears to be well established.
I took one for a test drive a few days ago and was suitably impressed. I would have probably gone ahead with the purchase but the boot space is a bit too small for our family and the interior was just a wee bit too much for us. It's still a strong contender however.
This BYD Atto 3 is also very popular in Thailand. However the cost of parts can be very expensive. One car ran over the curb and scrapped the battery tray. The cost of the tray and battery replacement parts (before labour and other cost) was ~900,000 THB (~39,130 Aus Dollar). Another car was involved in a side collision and the quoted price for the side panels were ~130,000 THB (~5,625 Aus Dollar) before labor and other additional cost. The local dealer has since revised the price and repair procedures due to social pressure, but it does raise issues about the viability of long-term ownership of the car.
Ive ridden in many BYD taxis in Asia. There’s a SH BYD taxi for sale in NZ with 250,000kms on the clock and 98% battery state of health so it seems the batteries don’t degrade with high mileage.
Lithium Iron Phosphate battery chemistry has many upsides: cheaper materials, no cobalt, long expected battery life, and lower chance of fires. Really the only reason it hasnt caught on as THE battery chemistry is because it has lower energy density than high nickel chemistries, so that the obsession/excuse of range anxiety is preventing many of the manufacturers from switching. The Chinese (BYD in particular) are also the major suppliers of LFP cells, so certain protectionist trade policies are keeping these superior cells out of certain markets. Which is ironic because the same people who dont want Chinese cars are the same people who constantly bring up colbalt mining and child exploitation (of course some of those same people in the US also just blocked legislation requiring companies to confirm the age of younger employees... sooo child exploitation isnt above their morals, just a convenient excuse).
One thing that should be noted is that taxis normally do slow-traffic city driving so it is easier to keep the battery under low stress and within a healthy range.
@@jasper5097 Cool, where is it? In China, BYD offers a lifetime warranty for the battery/drive train for the 1st owner, but the car must not exceed 30000km per year and it must be serviced and repaired at the main dealer.
The interior 'gym towel' is clearly supposed to be muscles. Got to say I think its a really really nice interior, outside is nice, but I'd be very happy to drive around inside this. Bring on more cars like this to keep the legacy makers on their toes. Hopefully one day we'll get a small 3 door from them ... I'm very much over seeing suvs
Thanks - Good review. We've 11,224 kms on our Atto3 in NZ according to my BYD phone app. This car i was expecting to like, i was surprised to be stunned by it. BYD are going to start owning this space. I hope the other manufacturers can keep up. The review skipped the built in 4G, OTA updates, Electric Tailgate, Android ecosystem for entertainment, towing 750KG, V2L adapter being free for us, electric sunroof, electric sun shade, wireless phone charging, 85KW fast charging, hires low light cameras, Trip video recordings, voice commands like "open all windows" and ... guitar doors ! Only downsides - slight lag in the throttle (0.5s?) Front wheel drive (meh). BYD are building and delivering in high numbers in NZ.
Glad you like so many things about the car not mentioned. But you really had to mention 85 kw fast charging as a plus!? Maybe 5 years ago. Modern affordable EVs should at least be 100 and really aim for 150. Top end EVs are aiming for 200+
Glad you mentioned the MG5, a lot of reviewers tend to dis it forgetting that it's the only ev estate in the UK, I've got one & it's now two years old and it still puts a smile on my face as I pass audi's, bmw's etc al.
@Burtis!! stiffened suspension just spoils the ride quality, lifting your right foot as you go into a bend & foot down as you come out keeps car stable. There is so much power under your right foot that tyre wear is inevitable. As for the wheel design, 'If it aint broke don't fix it.' My wife & I are pensioners and drive all over Scotland, NO PETROL, NO CAR TAX (YET) SEVEN YEAR WARRANTY.
@@dougscott3089 oh I don't mean like slammed just a little lower with a less cheap looking set of wheels. I wish they would do a trophy version of it not that I can afford anything like that but remember the old MG ZT estate I think it was called they looked nice
@Burtis!! I'll throw another quote at you, 'if you haven't tried it don't knock it,' if you REALLY want an EV then go out & buy one, HOWEVER start by Googling interest free car loans, look for an organisation called 'The Energy Savings Trust,' it's a government scheme for low cost loans, here in Scotland you can get upto £28000.00 interest free payable back over six years. Try a lot of EV dealers, I own an MG5, MG used to have a low cost purchase scheme, you cannot ever do enough research, go for test drives in several models from the same manufacturer. Stay away from high street banks they will rob you blind, don't be afraid to ask questions, also stay away from Arnold Clark they are even worse than high st banks. Now it's up to you, good luck & good hunting.
Bought one in Oz 4 months ago and love it. No complaints at all. We see that the UK version gets faster AC charging and a slightly different front plate holder, which I would prefer. Just went to Fully Charge Live in Sydney and the BYD stand was rocking. Chinese cars are here to stay.
Has the your cars body shell been galvanised???? and if so to a recognised standard???? Being that Chinese car manufacturers do not galvanize their cars for their domestic market and supposedly do only for export??????? But do they and how good is it???????????
I own two BYD Atto 3 60kWh in New Zealand. After the $8625 rebate they were very good value. They are remarkably efficient, smooth, comfortable and quiet. So far they appear to be the only car manufacturer other than Tesla to achieve over-the-air software updates and that is a real achievement when you consider how many have tried and failed.
Hi David have you seen the Tachyon version. Beautiful leather interior with a restrained “European” palette which almost completely disguises the human muscle dashboard.
@@whatthe6532 Yes, I’ve seen it. Here in NZ it is about the same price as a Tesla Model 3 RWD. I also own a Model 3 and I think it is better than the Atto 3. When I bought my Atto 3s they were nearly NZ$20,000 cheaper than a Model 3. Today there is about NZ$5000 between them as the Atto 3 has gone up and the Model 3 got cheaper.
Bang on Jonny. Rear wipers are a must in the UK for Hatches, Estates & SUV's. I just don't understand why so many makes / models don't have them these days. Essential if you have a rear window mounted dash cam. The Atto 3 looks OK & competitive. Interior is a bit left field but I don't mind that. That Pano roof is a big plus also - especially as MG have deleted it on the latest ZS EV. I would be more interested in something smaller from BYD (Dolphin?). A 5 door hatch with 200 mile range for £22k or less. Keep up to good work.
I've had my Atto3 in Australia for 2 months now and loving it. The build quality is great and amazing amount of tech for the money. I did remove the "Build Your Dreams" logo from the back.
The Atto 3 is selling well in Australia because of competitive pricing and they are actually available within a few months of ordering, unlike most of its competitors. I’d have one for sure, but might wait for the MG4.
MG4 is available in Thailand, and while its a lovely car, it has limited ground clearance. If you need the SUV to handle anything of the beaten path, you will be scratching the battery pack
Keith, Octopus Energy have just signed a big deal with BYD to supply these cars on a personal lease. I haven't looked at the deal, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a good one.
@@Brian-om2hh 😱 a personal lease in australia?! FOR AN EV?! crikey... so good I must be dreaming. It's great australia is getting it... we are so behind I'm sick of waiting to catch up.
Interesting comparison between your trim levels and what we have in New Zealand. We only have the Design level trim (with the 60kwh battery) with the smaller battery being an option later, but all the trim is standard. We also have additional chrome peices on the back, we have the "Atto 3" badge in bottom right hand corner of the hatch and an "EV" on the opposite left hand side. A number of people are removing the Build Your Dreams, some replace with just a BYD, some leave blank, and others have taken all those letters and been more adventurous with what you can spell with it.
Not quite true anymore. Sat in the Tachyon yesterday in Auckland. Top of the range atto3. Extremely tasteful quilted real leather seats. Dark cabin palette completely disguises the human muscle dashboard. As a lover of European cars I really rate the Much improved interior over the blue and white of lower models.
However the Tachyon isn’t a BYD option. It’s an upgrade done here and is distinctly Kiwi. Interesting though that BYD allows the mods under its warranty.
BYD are well known here in NZ as over the space of around a year or two the Atto 3 has ended up everywhere - for good reason. It's in a competitive segment for sure, but it kinda wins in most aspects within that. So yes, I'd 100% buy one.
What i do not understand is BYD‘s pricing policy. The Atto III costs actually a few hundred Euros MORE than a Model Y Standard Range in our country. Thats just not attractive.
@@wolfgangpreier9160 Given Tesla's build quality issues, poor reputation for services/repair/fault remediation and given the catastrophic horror story of a human that is Elon Musk, I don't see how anyone would even give Telsa a second glance. If nothing else, until Musk is kicked out and has nothing more to do with the company, it's a profoundly immoral choice.
BYD is actually a distant second to CATL in term of lithium battery producer, but they are still a massive battery maker, supplying cells to other companies from Tesla to Toyota. However BYD is now the largest plug in carmaker in the world, selling nearly 2 million units in 2022, and will possibly overtake Tesla as the number 1 pure BEV maker by volume either this year or next year. Edit: Also BYD has sold more than 3.5 million cars in their history, since they've been making (mostly crappy) cars for almost 20 years now. I believe the 3.5 million are just the cumulative plugin (BEV and PHEV) cars they've sold, of which 1.8 million just in 2022 alone, so they are growing fast indeed, and their current offerings are night and day different from the crappy cars they started with 20 years ago.
Their early cars were indeed poor for their time and that time was barely 20years ago. Insane development since. I reckon this year they will top the BEV by units sold chart. Tesla can't compete without any new models.
When i was in thailand i saw loads of the byd otto 3 liked the look so glad there over here as it gives more EV options ... smart looking car and nice colour as the ones in thailand were a pale blue/green colour...
This is a much better detailed review than all the other reviews I've seen of this car, (which I'm considering buying) from which I've learned some things. Thanks.
They've clocked circa 100,000 miles since their introduction at the depot, are quiet to drive but with regards to the durability, it's an entirely different drive unit so it's hard to draw parallels. Suffice to say, out of the options available, Alexander Dennis chose them as their driveline supplier, so I'm fairly sure there was good reason for that.
@@yetufekci1 BYD is the largest commercial EV manufacturer. With buses their most well known and widely sold. The bus fleet in Shenzen is full electric I think since 2017 ish. All of them are BYD.
@@philgrimsey3637 it's a shame they're bodied by ADL. The quality of their buses is just abysmal. We had a demonstrator E200EV up here and despite being almost new it was the creakiest bus I've ever been on! The Yutongs we've got now are so much nicer, but still fairly cheap feeling
@@TsLeng Are you sure BYD is the largest commercial EV manufacturer? I think the largest one is Yutong, another Chinese manufacturer. Many of electric buses in Shenzhen are from BYD because BYD is based in Shenzhen. But Yutong has a longer and larger footprint in commercial vehicle market.
We've had a BYD Atto 3 for 6 months in Perth, Western Australia. We travelled 10,000 km in that time and consistently get 400-430km per charge (250-270miles). It is comfortable, quiet and costs us under £5 to fill (on off-peak rates). Seriously highly recommended. P.S. and don't underestimate the safety of the Blade Batteries. Watch the BYD nail test on UA-cam.
Most battery nowadays (Yes, include the one inside your phone) won't be as easily exploding as BYD show on the video which only consists with only single cell. The battery that pass IEC battery safty standard all go through the same procedure and will be failed if it exploded. The battery for comparsion that shows in video for comparsion is what they used in last generation BYD car which infamous for exploding in China.
The white dash is supposed to represent muscle fibre. I've owned one for 3 months. It took me some time to warm to the vehicle. The quick rundown: The suspension is OK, a bit floaty over 80km/h but the car handles really well around the city with one caveat. In the wet the Atlas Batman tyres we got in Australia aren't up to the job. Not dangerous but will slip easily on take off - basically they require common sense. The regen is not great on the accelerator as it uses blended braking - so more aimed at traditional ICE drivers - definitely no one pedal driving. You can feel the regen on the brake pedal and when the friction brake cuts in. The navigation is exceptional. Really good. It now supports Apple Carplay but the built in navigation makes it almost unnecessary. The sound system is ... very average. It has a low speed warning indicator which you can't disable in software. I definitely didn't disconnect it the first week I had the car. The air con can be a bit anaemic for Australian conditions but it eventually gets to the right temperature. It has excellent cameras all around and a great virtual overhead view which is usually reserved for high end models (something my Tesla lacks). Overall I really like driving the car now - it smooth, quiet and reasonably efficient - about 400kms city/extra urban). I also own a Model 3 RWD which is better in nearly every way which is why it took me a while to warm to the BYD. I much prefer the one pedal driving and things like driver profiles that you get with the Tesla. Plus the Tesla app. Currently in Australia there is no app for the Atto 3. If I'm going on a trip I still take the Tesla (much faster charging, supercharger network, autopilot and more efficient). I will do a longer drive in the Atto 3 to see how it fares. Couple of Atto 3 quirks and observations. It has two park buttons near the gear shift. I'm not sure why? It has an NFC reader on the driver's mirror that allows you to use a key card to open the car. But they only give you one key card with the car and haven't enabled mobile phone NFC access. Seems like a waste. It has an unnecessary button to start the car. It has pretty good voice controls.
From your very thourough comment i read that the Atto III is not better than Tesla besides the 360 degree virtual view. Why is it more expensive in our country than the Model Y Standard Range? Not the 3. The Y!
@@wolfgangpreier9160 Makes no sense to me - the RWD Y is nearly $20K more expensive here. I'm not sure why the Atto 3 is so expensive in Europe and the UK. I would buy the Y every day of the week over the Atto 3. They aren't even in the same class of vehicle. The Atto 3 is a compact SUV or a slightly higher hatchback. The Model Y is much bigger and more practical for a lot of people.
@@mondotv4216 BYD has to follow the UN/ECE regulations for European car sales. They can not sell those vehicles they are giving the chinese and to Oz. Starting in 2024 all of those cars that have been freshly homologated for the European market must have the full range of ADAS and must follow certain very harsh tests regarding dust emission and crash tests. Yes, even EVs must follow dust emission standards. Who would have thought of that? Even the Chinese built VWs would not get a permit on European roads. Which, of course, makes everything much more expensive. Tesla is the only manufacturer who did not have to raise their prices. VW and Skoda cost around 20-22K more than MY. The Koreans are around 15-17K more expensive. Polestar, Volvo and even Stellantis cost more than Tesla. Ford is in the same range as BMW and Mercedes, Nio, Hongqi, XPeng around 80K+. GWM-Ora Cat, Mini, Smart/SAIC cost around 45-55K. Fisker -locally made 100km of here - is around 70K. Only MG tries to stay below 40K - and does not succeed. The MG5 costs around 41K. The Model 3 costs 43K. Do you think the MG5 is the same quality, sustainability, longevity and overall amount of car as a Model 3???
I have owned one in Australia since the middle of September, and it represents exceptional value for money. At the time of purchase, it was $50,700 Aussie dollars for the extended range Atto 3 in blue. We have 2 models here standard with the 50kw battery and extended range with the 60kw battery all trim specifications between the 2 are identical, all have the sunroof/ Moonroof as standard and we have the 12.8 inch infotainment screen and electric tailgate as standard too. Home charging speed is limited to 7.2 kw. We don't have the 11kw option. With the Atto 3 being a ground up built Ev and with all these standard features, some other Ev brands charge you for as an option, the Atto 3 represents exceptional value for money. To me, the Atto 3, with its vehicle to load capability as standard at an affordable and competitive price even when compared to the MG ZS EV, which currently in Australia is only available with the smaller battery and built on an Ice platform is starting to look very dated. I can see both Tesla and BYD being the companies dominating global Ev brands and other brands getting left behind because they are too slow to make the transition into pure Ev vehicles, plus they will have difficulty with supplying the global market and competing with Chinese EV companies when it comes to manufacturing costs per Ev built. When you make your own Ev batteries and other components like BYD does, you are already ahead of the curve. Yes, BYD are an unknown brand outside of China, but they have been building pure Ev vehicles since 2010 in China, and conventional ice vehicles since 2005. Warren Buffett from the USA, a well known and respected investor/business man bought millions of dollars worth of shares in BYD in 2008 as he could see the potential of BYD.
Catching up on this episode after a busy few days. Beautifully put together car! I would definitely put my money down for one. However I would possibly de-badge the rear, but not for the embarrassment. Top notch journalism yet again Drake.. sorry I mean Jonny! 😂
Have bought this model at Christmas 2022. Best price and value and only 5 months to wait from order to delivery. Just love charging the car from our solar panels for free using our Zappi. Best value deal ever. Yes, Johnny Aldi and Lidl middle-class perfection. Front-wheel drive does tramp under fierce acceleration but that is not what or why we bought this vehicle. Very speedy when needed but best driven smoothly. A sensible array of features but not over-nannyish.
I have owned a Kona ev, Kia eniro, Tesla M3 and now Tesla model y in the last 6 years. This BYD looks like a very competitive package, esp with the 11kw onboard charger, pano roof and critically the heat pump as standard. Well priced and pitched against the Korean and European competitors and it will be more comfortable drive than the Tesla’s. I’m sure it will sell by the boat load. The interior is at least interesting and they have the large infotainment screen like the Tesla, although not the speed or blistering performance. Many will prefer the comfort over brute force. Yes, I would consider buying a BYD. Cheers Johnny👍
A little thing - putting the binnacle on the steering wheel column is neat. In so many cars, when you adjust the steering wheel it can leave a binnacle mounted on the dash occluded by the wheel.
Thats impressive. I'd probably remove "Build Your Dreams" from the rear and fit the same BYD as the front below the lightbar, to break up the expanse of metal.
I am from Egypt and was looking for reviews about this car as thinking of buying an EV and found your review by luck, my good luck :), your reviews are one of the bests. I guess I will go for this one over MG4 unless you tell me something new as one month passed after this video. Thanks
It's always good to have new brands and competition come into a sector, but the biggest issue with them, and it's something we see a lot of in motorcycling, is the lack of sales and aftersales support. The car might be good, but where's your nearest dealer? What's the parts availability? It might have a big warranty but do you have somewhere reliable and local that will honour that warranty? I think that one of the hardest parts about manufacturers breaking into new markets.
Our local MG ZSEV dealer is the Mercedes dealer in central Victoria. I don’t see why something similar won’t be coming soon………..hmmm ….unless they are seen as potentially too big a threat to your other brands.
If there is one company who would have dealers/sales support/local parts its BYD. They plan to open two European factories and the sheer speed at which they are scaling up is unparalleled. The most vertically integrated company in the world and best seller in Thailand, Singapore, srael, New Zealand already. Rental firm SixT ordered 100k and UK-based Octupus ordered 5K already...
A consideration for a new market entrant, but by the same token, how new and how big are they? The answer is very simple: the largest EV manufacturer in the world, operating in 60+ countries. If you're afraid of them disappearing then you won't be buying a Tesla either because Tesla is in a much more precarious global position than BYD is. In fact, there's a decent chance Tesla will fail within the next 10 years as other manufacturers eat their market share. They will go the way of Blackberry: unable to compete because in the end they're just not that good and eventually people realise that.
I have purchased a comfortlevel and quite frankly have been blown away by the outstanding quality feel and the standard of finish. Our first trip was from Glasgow back home to the Isle of Lewis across the highlands where we easially found charging points. We have found her both economical and a comfortable drive. This is our first electric car and have been very impressed, ours is the same colour as yours and again is a quality colour and finish.
15:02 The Nissan Ariya is mentioned twice, but the Tesla Model Y isn't mentioned. This is a great video, my introduction to the channel. I will definitely be seeing more, thank you!
Hi. Sorry to say it Jonny, but BYD has been for sale in Norway since August 2021. The BYD Tang EV was than delivered to the 1st customers. So tha Ato is not the 1st BYD in Europe. Thanks for great show!
This is getting closer to what I want in a daily, I am only in a car for 10 minutes each way to get to work, and would use it primarily as a grocery getter, with occasional light trailer towing needs. I would really like to see solar panels to give me pretty much no cost travel, and an ability to hook into the home as my battery source. I will have to wait.
No cost travel? Are you ignoring the purchase price? If you're only doing 10 minutes a day then in pure cost terms an ICE easily beats any EV, even a solar recharged one.
@@DiscoFang I guess your still back in the 90s, sure I have to buy the car but I need to replace my current car as it is pretty much worn out. Having spent thousands on maintaining it and then more thousands refuelling it. The idea with an electric car with the ability to hook up to my home is to capture my excess solar power and use it in the evening. Yes I paid for my solar panels, my electricity bill was over $1000 per quarter they are now less than $200 and most of that is the supply charge. So they paid for themselves in about a year. I'm not sure why people are so keen to keep on paying for power and motion provided by fossil fuels, when you can achieve the same outcome with renewable with much less impact on the environment and your wallet. It pretty much is evolution in energy creation, we have been told for years that we needed to find a solution for diminishing oil supplies, but I guess some people can't move with the times. I am sure there were plenty of people who thought the car wouldn't catch on kept there horses for eternity.
@@ADudesRotary They were your words not mine. Free running costs. The fact remains, a new EV is far more expensive than an equivalent new ICE. That fact says nothing about my preference or situation yet you seem to have extrapolated beyond the point and think now you know me. So far off the mark. So you already have solar? Your initial comment of wanting a car with inbuilt panels to allow zero running costs implied you didn’t. But that’s a whole ‘nother can of snake oil. Expecting a car with inbuilt solar panels to be able to produce any meaningful power is not realistic. The available surface area is one thing but angle of incidence, panel curvatures and and environmental shading are all limiting factors. It’s a gimmick not a reality.
How many miles are you travelling a day? 10mins of urban and m’way combo would be only about 5 miles each way. 5 days a week of that plus groceries is only only around 3,500miles a year. Yes that doesn’t require much solar energy but that’s also only about 330L of petrol for a reasonably fuel efficient modern car. That’s at least 15 years of petrol for the purchase price difference. I love EVs but be real.
I test drove this at Fully Charged Show and it was very good and for me, even the top spec is cheaper than the so called Luxury Car Tax limit that most EV's are over when the spec is above the basic. Car was comfortable and drove well. The extra technology huge panoramic sunroof and even voice control to open windows , turn the heat on etc. was very nice to see. The screen when in portrait can be split top and bottom to show different things, such as map and radio/media. The other amazing thing I was told is the car can be made and delivered in just 1 week!!!
I've been waiting for this battery technology to get to market. I first read about it nearly 2 years ago. The other benefit the battery pack has, as claimed by BYD at the time, is it strengthens the chassis of the vehicle making it a lot tougher than you'd expect. Great video Johnny 👍
Cheers Johnny , so much choice now . I keep thinking about a new EV but my leaf 40 Tekna has so many good bits I can’t bring myself to part with it yet .
I would definitely buy one. In South Africa we only have the expensive BMWs, Merc, Jags and Volvos to choose from when it comes to EVs. The Ora Funky Cat should hopefully be avaible for sale this year. But the Atos 3 is a great family sized car.
Atto is an insanely simple functional programming language. It features a syntax driven entirely by polish notation and no delimiters to speak of (it ignores all non-separating whitespace). What do you get for this simplicity? Well... an insanely simple language with a ~200 line self-hosted interpreter. Despite these design limitations, it's actually possible to write quite pleasing code in Atto. That, combined with the extraordinarily extendable syntax (you can define your own operators, or overload those defined in the core library) make it ideal for solving a whole class of programming problems that are normally awkward to solve in more imperative languages.
eNiro 4+ owner, and I’d possibly buy one for the improved rapid charging speed and panoramic roof. However I rarely use rapid chargers, so that’s less of an issue for me personally. Feel they should’ve used a 65-70kWh battery to really kick the opposition while it’s down, and the lack of frunk/froot is an obvious miss (but will be solved by someone else). More attractive than the eNiro, but not the NiroEV. It’s just the massive screen that’d cause me some hesitancy - I LOVE BUTTONS. A lightly used eNiro 4+ is better value right now too.
I am in Sydney and test drove one. It was too easy to reach 60km/h without notice, as it is so quiet. Handled normal driving well. The camera for parking was good. All I need is install solar roof charging at home and charge up during the day, free. My present car is a Mercedes C350e plug in hybrid, and I would be happy to have a BYD any day.
I remember when the first Lidl opened here. I went to check it out. The lady in front of me put all her shopping in 3 Marks and Spencer carrier bags. Middle class 🤔 certainly Hyacinth Bouquet
I would buy one and they have a strong presence here in Australia. However I prefer the RWD MG4 for the money. I do think BYD battery tech will be a winner
I have had one for 5 months and they are great cars. Why don't the UK reviews talk about the roof blind? Its great for hot weather to keep the sun out.
Jonny this review had me in stitches! 😂 The BO gym towel 😂 Bloody great watch as always! Looks like a good quality product to be fair. I'd definitely have it over an ID 3 or 4!
Did a test drive at the fully charged show. Really liked it and yes I would buy one. Excellent quality at a great price. A good drive without being outstanding.
Use to come up against A BYD taxi 10 yrs ago at PEASE POTTAGE M23 on what was only two 50kwh charges. ( now of course 10 or so GRIDSERVE chargers,) 250kw plus
One of the only reviews that has reviewed this car for what it has been designed for. A family SUV that was designed to deliver comfort, safety and economy to a family. Very well done. I’m glad you showed the interior for what it is, not the horror that some have portrayed it to be because it dared to be different. I can see many young families buying this car, as it is very modern, and extremely good quality. As we wanted to go for a BEV, and I have modified our house for solar, to ensure the majority of our charging is free and green, I did a lot of study on new BEV’s. This car came out on top for everything including great value for money. The standard safety, additional items unexpected (like the electric hatch) and tech is outstanding for the money. Not to mention, you also tested it for what it was built for, a comfortable ride. Some seem to test it as a sports car, it’s not a sports car it’s meant to be a comfortable SUV. GREAT WORK INDEED.
I wholeheartedly agree with you. The majority of the reviews I have read for this car are obviously cut-and-paste journalism and as you have noted they seem to have no concept of what the car is actually for! I own an Atto and I just love it. It is smooth, quiet and comfortable, and still has enough poke to take off at the lights and seriously piss off the muscle heads if you can be bothered to. As for running costs, I charge at home partially on solar (you can program the car when to turn charging on and off) and even assuming 100% grid-power it only costs me about $AU 1.20 a day for a 60km commute. The saving in petrol is paying the interest on the loan for me.
Like other EV’s it’s just too expensive. I was hoping with the Chinese wave of cars coming that prices would’ve been more like £20 k or less to create real competition. But no disappointingly NO. I’ll pass until more realistic pricing happens.
That probably a lot to do with the import Tax in the U.K. for the on the road price. But yes these for £25k would have sent the market into meltdown. We will see as Tesla have done bring down the price of the cars in some cases £5k and promised it will continue. We will see.
"The quality and range of features for the money" is exactly what we said about Japanese cars when they started to take over. I suspect this takeover will be even bigger if the western legacy makers don't get a wiggle on. BTW, Elon was the first to beat the Enfield, Mate just rubbed it in.
I like it..! Apart from the pano roof,(would be expensive if something fell on it), the screen in portrait looks like it would obscure your view, (especially if you're short).... 🤔
I find this car more interesting than the likes of VW or MG. The KIA/Hyundai pair is good too. I'm quite a bit surprised by this car TBH. Seems good value for money too at $36k
In the UK, it is expensive 36.500 to 38.500 pounds. In Europe, they have significant subsidies, 10.000 Euro subsidy in Germany and norway. Priced with government subsidy in mind. Zero subsidy in the uk.
I would definitely look at the BYD if I wanted a car in this segment, it seems one of the most interesting value/price ratio. I learned to drive on a one wiper car (Citroen CX), and I would never buy a new car without rear wiper (or without heated side mirrors). Cars without it are maybe nicer, but we don't live in California.
The white part of the dash and doors look like a Whales belly to me! 🙂 The problem is that BYD haven't done what MG have... They've been greedy, gone in too strong on price from day one, and that will have a knock-on effect on sales. They'd have been better to have made it more striking externally and more subtle inside.
Completely agree about the price.. As a cost to build to the retail price I think the featured top of the range will be enormously profitable to byd.. The blade battery technology is impressive and China wil I think in the next 5 years be bringing us a ford fiesta sized vehicle with a Ford Focus sized interior for less than £20000. Bringing down the cost of batteries is THE focus for all manufacturers and once they've managed to crack it then Tesla and it's model 2 mass market car will have strong competition I think in a few years time..
If anything, for me the music association is DIY by Peter Gabriel. Couple of things. Next video going to be the Han? (Seen in background, along with the Dolphin, maybe). And I know that Jonny is quite tall, but there is a clear relationship between fold flat floor rear seats and lack of upper leg support, in a BEV, because of the battery. It's not a criticism, just an observation. I don't want even taller cars to resolve the issue. My VW ID3 seats do not fold flat, leaving a 2-3 inch difference. But there is good upper leg support, and I'm 6 ft tall. I guess it's whatever you prefer. Oh, and what you're calling for is an Estate. 😊 Good video, as always.
There was a fleet of BYD's brought into the UK as E taxi's in London some years ago unfortunately there was a problem with UK taxi firm so when I was involved there was only ten vehicles being trialed on the London streets.
Would 100% buy one, but when I was in the dealership I'd ask them to take the build your dreams off the back and just put the B, Y, and D in that massive empty concave space. It looks great, quality tech, good NCAP rating, standard gear is good, PHYSICAL BUTTONS, what's not to like? Also has to be said, on some level if you're buying an SUV you don't really care about what you're driving, or you wouldn't be buying an SUV.
Might be our new car this one! The MG4 is fantastic but a little smaller. We have a hybrid Niro from 2018 that will be sold this summer but this car seems smack in the point of what me and the missus needs. No kids or dogs so the boot space etc is well enough in this one. A bit more expensive here in Norway at around 41K pounds but still ALOT cheaper than the new Niro EV and this is a bit more fresh and fun.
Booked in for a test drive next Friday. Been waiting for months for BYD to start selling in the UK as the car is not too big or small, got great tech and a high spec. Shame we don't get a longer warranty with only 4 years and it would have been nice if it was a few thousand cheaper like other parts of the world. Still it's way cheaper than a VW ID 3 or 4 Niro or Kona.
Wow - £35,500 - 40,000. I picked up my LR in Australia for only $AU50,000 (well less with incentives). At the current exchange rate that puts it at over $AU66 - 72K (and mine's the LR so I assume that would be the $72K model. Admittedly the UK has a 15% VAT but still that's 40% more expensive. It's a small SUV. Can't see it selling well at that price.
It’s a shame but looks like will have to stop dealing with China. As a country need to start behaving , if not Europe needs to stop any dealings with them as we have with Russia.
still too expensive for a "budget" brand. the ora cat was pre annonced as £25000 but its alot more, closer to 35 for a small budget car.when they are sub 20k i will be interested
It looks like the rear side windows fog up alot, is that just because you got alot of rain in while filming with the doors open or does it happen otherwise too?
BYD has a smaller hatchback, the Dolphin, and of course a Model 3 competitor the Seal. But there are owners in Australia here who have removed the Build Your Dreams but ours have the Atto 3 name and EV on opposite sides at the rear. The colour names are definitely colourful not the names they use in Australia btw. Faraday Past plays the Door Bin banjo. ;) The white gym towel is supposed to be muscle sinnew type look to it I think is the idea. It is on the top of my shortlist for next EV after my lease expires next year but oddily in Australia it's $50k AUD which converted to UK Pounds is much less than what they are offering and we have two models but the only difference is battery size(50 or 60kWh) and we only get a 12" screen currently Apple Carplay & Spotify with Android Auto is coming soon.
Urrgh. Raw muscle sinew is perhaps a stranger and more incongruous reference than damp gym towel. Like choosing to design a bathroom suite themed around a full English breakfast. Toilet seat as fried egg? Do we need themes?
I thought that the influx of Chinese made electric vehicles would start to see a more sensible approach to EV pricing. At £39k, you might as well go for an ID4/Skoda Enyaq and be a little more assured you are getting the build quality. They both appear to be bigger cars too. A little underwhelmed to say the least. The BYD appears to be the same size as the MG ZS? And that car starts at £30,500. The inclusion of a heat pump and roof can't be worth £6k surely.
I'll take expertise over a fancy name badge. BYD have been doing this longer than most and from my experience of autoshows in China between 2000 and 2010, they're not amateurs. It's a shame it's yet another SUV, but it's a good looking one. Now to find where I can test drive one.
5:40 I'm glad I'm not the only who has that song pop into their head everytime they here BYD mentioned.
Damn you PYT (Pretty Young Thing) Jackson 🤨
@@TheLateBrakeShow At least it's a good song to get stuck in your head though.
I just had to go listen to that song, lol. Been years since I've listened to it. MJ really knew how to make music!
I think about the Bydo empire in the R-Type video game series.
Just got mine after 5 weeks of waiting after ordering here in the Netherlands 🇳🇱 and I am loving it every single moment.
I am done with overpriced German cars.
Poor you😢
Me too.
I'd happily buy one of these over a premium priced Kia, Hyundai or even VW! It has everything I'd need in a car and the interior design is fantastic, range is just right and the battery technology appears to be well established.
We’ve had our Atto 3 in Australia for 6 months now. Amazing car! So comfortable to drive. The new update with Android auto makes it even better.
How does the aircon perform on a hot day in conjunction with the glass roof?
@@grant1437 Works fine. We never had any problems in summer.
@@Lofyne cheers 👍
I took one for a test drive a few days ago and was suitably impressed. I would have probably gone ahead with the purchase but the boot space is a bit too small for our family and the interior was just a wee bit too much for us. It's still a strong contender however.
What’s the body roll and ride like?
Saw the first one on Thai national news, complete PR disaster. The total repair cost was higher than the list price for a new car.
So those repair costs will feed into insurance premiums, something to check before buying (or in my case, not buying)
But isn’t this true for other ev brands as well? For example Tesla?
Kinda scary as new ones are 1.2 million baht. I'm still thinking of purchasing one but will do a bit more research
Yeah, 900K baht is more than buying a new Atto 3. Stupid!
@@linghan8 Except that in some cases taxis are predominantly rapid charged which would cause accelerated wear.
In my country BYD offers an 8 year or 500,000km battery and drive train warranty.
They're clearly very confident in their technology.
Top end EVs are aiming for 200+
@@Jeddin agreed the 88Kw fast charging is a bit ordinary but it's all that's available for the cars being shipped to Aus/NZ

Glad you mentioned the MG5, a lot of reviewers tend to dis it forgetting that it's the only ev estate in the UK, I've got one & it's now two years old and it still puts a smile on my face as I pass audi's, bmw's etc al.

These would look nice lowered stiffened up with some nice wheels 😁👍
They look a bit wobbly
@Burtis!! stiffened suspension just spoils the ride quality, lifting your right foot as you go into a bend & foot down as you come out keeps car stable. There is so much power under your right foot that tyre wear is inevitable. As for the wheel design, 'If it aint broke don't fix it.' @Burtis!!
Johnny your reviews are just the best!
Nice that you can drive, talk to camera and still drive in a courteous manner. Full marks.
There are a few knocking around Brisbane. Good to see we're catching up.
Has the your cars body shell been galvanised???? and if so to a recognised standard???? Being that Chinese car manufacturers do not galvanize their cars for their domestic market and supposedly do only for export??????? But do they and how good is it???????????
@@robertday8619 yes they do.
How did you remove the logo?
so why did you remove the "Build Your Dreams" logo from the back?
I like the car and more than happy showing the BYD brand but not the long "build your dreams" logo cover most of the back
The Atto 3 is selling well in Australia because of competitive pricing and they are actually available within a few months of ordering, unlike most of its competitors. I’d have one for sure, but might wait for the MG4.
MG4 is available in Thailand, and while its a lovely car, it has limited ground clearance. If you need the SUV to handle anything of the beaten path, you will be scratching the battery pack

BYD are well known to me. Our bus depot took delivery of 32 BYD electric double deckers in 2020. I'm interested to see how they do in the car market

You can't see any other battery manufacturers repeat the same test on their own battery cell. Never.
Not the 3. The Y!
In Australia the Tesla Y is way more than Atto
@@wolfgangpreier9160 Makes no sense to me - the RWD Y is nearly $20K more expensive here. I'm not sure why the Atto 3 is so expensive in Europe and the UK.
Correct and his investment returned 6 times the amount of money he put in.
I just returned from Thailand Jonny, I noticed Quite afew of these whilst travelling around SE Asia !👍👍
I will deffo ask the dealer to remove it, it’s almost embarrassing?
Agreed. I'm usually against debadging but it's a must for this one.
I am from Egypt and was looking for reviews about this car as thinking of buying an EV and found your review by luck, my good luck :), your reviews are one of the bests. I guess I will go for this one over MG4 unless you tell me something new as one month passed after this video. Thanks
Thank you for watching, welcome aboard TLBS
They will go the way of Blackberry: unable to compete because in the end they're just not that good and eventually people realise that.
new brand, new market, everything need time
actually most of electric buses in uk are running on a byd chassis and battery. Byd has a joint venture with abl in UK.
Very interesting review - yes I would buy one and I value engineering above what friends and neighbours think of badges.
wr
Yep, I'd buy one, love the funky interior styling, and only have heard good things about them.
Round of applause for the B roll and the drone work
15:02 The Nissan Ariya is mentioned twice, but the Tesla Model Y isn't mentioned.
This is a great video, my introduction to the channel. I will definitely be seeing more, thank you!
Thank you. Welcome aboard TLBS
At that price I'd rather have a Cupra Born or a used Model Y.
If it was sub £30k it would be great.
Model Y looks so dated. Its meh
Hi. Sorry to say it Jonny, but BYD has been for sale in Norway since August 2021. The BYD Tang EV was than delivered to the 1st customers. So tha Ato is not the 1st BYD in Europe. Thanks for great show!
There was a company using BYD cars as cabs in London a few years back.
I just ordered my first EV car the Atto 3 Design and I am proud of it. Cheers.
Lightspeed One is kinda what you're looking for. Darn expensive though.
Maybe in the 2030's you'll have something closer to what you want.
Also......there are no issues charging to 100%
If ever you travel from Schiphol Airport. All their buses are electric BYD. I will definitely consider buying this here in the UK
It looks like a great car, but not sure how comfortable I am sending (even more) money to China
Finally a voice of reason, well said
What phone are you using?
I must say that this looks very good for an introduction model to the UK from BYD. Very impressive, excellent review.
Spec savers for you fella. It’s awful
Looks a lovely car, Nicely finished and something I would consider to be honest. I quite like it. Battery tech sounds good as well.
You pronounced her name wrong.
Great vid jonny. Heat pump as standard is a nice touch, just when all legacy makers are removing the option.
Trouble with Chinese cars is the sound of war drums. How will you get parts etc when the sanctions hit in a few years over their Taiwan stance???
Hands down the best car review channel! Thank you
Stuart, thanking you sir. ✊🏽
@@TheLateBrakeShow you Sir are most welcome! 👍
One of the main considerations is can you fit a pram in it?
It would be a great graphic to show w,d,h on the boot as well as the size in litres.
Check out 'BYD Atto 3 interior review' by Bjorn Nyland
I was shocked to see how small the boot is on the Kia Sportage, considering you see young families with them.
@Zerofightervi yes boot space on suvs is tiny compared with estate cars or mpvs
@@gs425 That's why I've got a V70, proper sized family car.
@@Zerofightervi mondeo Estate here.
No sun that day so Johnny probably forgot? 😂
@@TsLeng The 2 I have seen from the UK have both not mentioned it lol
Probably because UK and Hot weather doesnt go hand in hand :D
@@craigk1328 stop putting salt in our wounds. There is no sun here....
@@stephenbaxter5804 I was there on holiday last July and it was sunny and hot!
Compared to the warranties fine print, exclusions and complications here in Australia, what is it like in the UK?
Jonny this review had me in stitches! 😂 The BO gym towel 😂
Bloody great watch as always! Looks like a good quality product to be fair. I'd definitely have it over an ID 3 or 4!
Did a test drive at the fully charged show. Really liked it and yes I would buy one. Excellent quality at a great price. A good drive without being outstanding.
If BYD bring the Han model to the UK I hope it has three trim levels; Solo,Duo and Trio. I know which one l’d choose.
Quality review. I live in China and here it’s called the Yuan Plus. Buying one next year and your review helped me decide.
Yes! Time to the put the kettle on and watch another one of your excellent videos! :)
Cheers v much!
@@lachieavard8887 fantastic. Its great it's working well for you. Glad the solar is also working well.
Congratulations.
I will certainly consider a BYD when my Pug 2008e comes to the end of its lease next year - things have progressed so fast in the last three years.
Like other EV’s it’s just too expensive.
I was hoping with the Chinese wave of cars coming that prices would’ve been more like £20 k or less to create real competition. But no disappointingly NO.
I’ll pass until more realistic pricing happens.
This, definitely this.
Amen
Same here, disappointed by the price.
That probably a lot to do with the import Tax in the U.K. for the on the road price. But yes these for £25k would have sent the market into meltdown. We will see as Tesla have done bring down the price of the cars in some cases £5k and promised it will continue. We will see.
I would absolutely buy a BYD........no problem (but I'm waiting for the HAN to hit our shores)
I am waiting for Seal. Wheeboy said its the benchmark in driving dynamics and quiter than Model 3
36 grand for a Chinese sh14box? They are bloody joking, right?
I’ve had mines for 6 months !!!! Love it !!! There is also a Launch Mode ! For that 0-60!
The white part of the dash and doors look like a Whales belly to me! 🙂
The problem is that BYD haven't done what MG have... They've been greedy, gone in too strong on price from day one, and that will have a knock-on effect on sales. They'd have been better to have made it more striking externally and more subtle inside.
It could well be whale-based as they also make a model called the Dolphin it could also suggest muscle tissue under a flap of skin.
Good video, as always.
if they can make the BYD Han as a shooting brake/estate, that would be grand
Proper order!!!! the HAN is a fantastic looking yoke but as a business traveller I could really do with a hatch and a hundred more litres of storage.
A Chinese coachbuilding firm made a Han estate/SW as a one off. They also made a Han convertible.
@@amniote69 just searched and that looks like exactly what I want 🙂
@@amniote69 I just read an article yesterday that NIO are doing an Estate version of the ET5 for the European Market. Looking forward to seeing that!!
BYD majority owned brand Denza have just announced a new EV that looks like the love child of an SUV and a shooting brake.
There was a fleet of BYD's brought into the UK as E taxi's in London some years ago unfortunately there was a problem with UK taxi firm so when I was involved there was only ten vehicles being trialed on the London streets.
And when you go to black circle just check the tyre date.
Just ordered ours. Top spec and equivalent of £29k ($54k Aussie).
Can't wait!
Can't see it selling well at that price.
great video and the new Chinese manufacturers are proving they can do things very well and look premium, would consider this against KIA etc.
The Zeekr x by Geely will be shown at the Shanghai Auto show on April 18. Excited for this one. Hoping it has a Sodium Ion battery.
It’s a shame but looks like will have to stop dealing with China.
As a country need to start behaving , if not Europe needs to stop any dealings with them as we have with Russia.
*Pedant warning* BYD has been selling the bigger Tang EV SUV in Norway since late 2021.
still too expensive for a "budget" brand. the ora cat was pre annonced as £25000 but its alot more, closer to 35 for a small budget car.when they are sub 20k i will be interested
40k euro?! too expensive
Go buy your European shit box if this is too expensive!
I'll take expertise over a fancy name badge. BYD have been doing this longer than most and from my experience of autoshows in China between 2000 and 2010, they're not amateurs.
It's a shame it's yet another SUV, but it's a good looking one. Now to find where I can test drive one.
