I own a BYD Atto 3 and I'm loving it. Not quite the same acceleration as the Tesla 3 but more than good enough. I've done nearly 30K in less than 12 months. Very comfortable and so far very reliable. For the money, it's a no brainer.
BYD batteries internal construction differs significantly from traditional lithium batteries. Besides using folding technique instead of rolling the cathode/anode sheets to maximise space utilisation, it also uses similar tabless design like 4680 which means there are anode/cathode pairs attached on the end of each fold to enhance internal electron flow to the external anode/cathode connector. Thats why BYD blade batteries are safer and can charge/discharge faster than other LFP batteries with comparable performance as NCA/NCM batteries.

We have had our Atto 3 (3rd in Tasmania, 2nd in Hobbiton) for just over a year. We love it. With PV, a house battery and charger, we only really have to pay to charge over Winter. Wish we could afford to buy a second one...
Cynical people out there, re negative comments about affording a second new car so House payments, car payments can really streach the budget. Well said Sam. For countries outside of China, the price of a car with a blade battery is often far higher than what it should be. Once we can figure our way around that, I too am a big fan of anything with BYD or Gotion LFP cells.
Another great video Dan. I'm seriously considering getting a BYD Seal when they launch in the UK next month. I think it's a great looking and extremely well equipped car. Your explanation of their blade battery is very reassuring and I'll be very interested to see what warranty is offered on the battery pack, rest of the car and mileage limitations when it does launch. If the price is right it will be my next EV.
Don't believe the marketing hype - find out what customers think of the Customer Service - if its the usual Chinese style, its appalling. Once you've bought it you are on your own..
The thin arrangement of BYD batteries in an aluminum housing helps with thermal managements and physically supports the battery preventing bulging and the degradations associated with those two stressors. Other manufactures will probable start adopting this style of battery cell housing..
So-called motoring journalists skip mentioning the battery chemistry when reviewing electric cars which is puzzling, considering it is the most significant part of the car.
I saw an Atto 3 in the flesh again today and thought to myself how great it looked (in metallic grey) and a perfect size for a small family. Will get one once they do something else with the interior design language which I think is fussy and not to my taste.
1:19 I think you underestimate the cost of a new engine. I had a VF SSV commodore that broke a timing chain while under warranty - The dealer initially disputed the warranty claiming it was 1200k overdue for the 30k service and sent an estimate for $15k for a long motor replacement and labour. The car was $45k new. I did get it repaired for free after fair trading intervened- the same new stock crate motor is around $15k on its own these days.
There’s a good reason why even NMC ternary batteries are guaranteed for 125,000 or 8 years or 70% that’s because there average degradation is 2.3% per year meaning 13 years to reach 70% of cause this will be much longer if you look after the battery and usually charge 20-80% when rapid charging. 100% once a month on AC to balance the cells. Also don’t park up for long periods at very high or very low states of charge.
Batteries don't degrade like that, they start off with more yearly degradation and then taper off. That's how there's instances of Teslas going for 400k to 600k km without hitting 70% capacity, but mostly it's a gamble, batteries can still die unexpectedly before 200k km
@@antonio_fosnjar Batteries degrade 3-5% a year with more fast charging, more heat more damage and risk of failure. 1-2% degrade a year with slow charging 30-80%, less heat damage. Those battery stats from Telsa owners are flawed since most owners charge mostly at home with slower charging
@22phan I've seen one guy talking about his tesla S with 200k miles and above 80% charge, he charged exclusively with superchargers and the car is not new, I don't remember if it was legaci model S or not. But still, my point is that degradation tapers off, it's not a constant like 2% a year, it's more like 3% a yers for the first few years and then 1% the rest of the lifetime of vehicle
I would wait for the next generation of Atto3, I think they can really improve on the styling, not that the current styling is bad but really not to my taste. The new Seal U looks good but needs to be more affordable.
I’d love a BYD. I’ve said so since the start. The thing is they’re not commercially available to civilians in Canada, yet. There’s a fleet of taxi cabs in Montréal but that’s about it. You can import it yourself but when you get through all the hurdles it’s more expensive than a plush Tesla!😮
Hi Sam, I have a BYD Atto3, and overall it's well worth buying. The battery is superior, and your point is valid; I can trust charging while in bed over the garage and revel in charging to 100% more often than not. The driving is excellent (better once the cheap Batman tyres go), and that is high on my list of priorities. The infotainment and genera quality of electronics are poor. Fortunately, you can forgive little annoyances when so much is right about the car, and there isn't a car at any price that's perfect. It needs more range and faster charging speeds for touring, but most of us fly these days. Locally, it is fit for purpose. However, I have done Brisbane to Adelaide and back with some pains, yet think I might drive back to Sydney in it for the next FCL event. I just hope they build more charging stations before February!
Thanks for all the great content! I made a booking for the TM3 LR last month, but have decided to wait until the Seal launches here in Malaysia. If the price is as low as it is in places like Oz and Thailand I'm quite willing to "donate" that booking fee to Tesla :D

You need to think about a whole lot of aspects of an EV purchase before you buy. Battery safety is the number one for me, but closely followed by what the vehicle actually offers, and importantly, how easy is it to live with every day. I don’t really care that much about chemistry or such like, unless it affects safety. I think the idea of removable packs are a much smarter idea than integrating the pack within the chassis (take a bow Nio). I can see some clear advantages in this regard. Overall, reviewing someones vlog who lives with one of these vehicles day to day is more important. There are many EVs out there but as UA-cam content shows, there are only a few that are really compelling.
@@TheRealBrook1968 Absolutely. My thinking is that EVs are good for around urban areas, so range is not as big an issue for me. get the pollution out of a City could be the best thing we ever did. I’m kind of reminded that when ICE vehicles flirts took over from horse drawn carts, a lot of major Cities around the world experienced something no one saw coming (as far as I know), and that was the irradiation of airborne diseases in densely occupied spaces. Going to the country may still require hydrocarbons for now, although EVs are getting better at this. If you are a two car family perhaps you can have a small EV for the urban runs and an ICE/PHEV for longer trips. I don’t particularly want to be thinking about EV charging on a long trip. Doing the maths and chemistry thing whilst on holidays seems a bit naf. I just want to fill her up and head off.
@@GolLeeMeDon't you stop for eating if a long trip is more than 500 miles? I think people that drive 20-30,000 miles a year are those who appreciate the EVs the most.

As a rule I only stop for 10 minutes every 2 hours on a usual drive. Thats it. Just enough time to get a tank of fuel, on occasion, and have a drink. Stopping for 20-30 minutes would drive me upon the wall, possibly even longer if battery is rapid-gating in a recharge session. Thank you for raising this matter though, as I had not really thought about my own circumstances before ion long distance travel. 👍
Drove both the model 3 and seagull in china. The tesla is more a brand statement so people know you can get one. For comfort and practical driving in city (which is 90%) of the time the seagull makes more sense. Also for long distance the tesla is hell on your back
Not going to happen unless they start making the EVs in US, Mexico, Canada, including batteries and components. The law becomes complicated on this issue. This was done to promote US EV production by the Biden admin. Otherwise BYD will not be price competitive.
I understand you believe LFP batteries are the best choice. I'm just wondering why they're the lowest warranty of any Tesla batteries. They only have 100,000 mi warranty versus 120,000 or 150,000 for the other varieties.
Most likely because Tesla knows the LFP batteries will outlast the NMC batteries by a factor of 2 (at least). No need to warranty an item that will outlast the car ! IMO
It's marketing, market positioning and profit margins. Upfront you don't want to signal to buyers willing to spend more money on higher grade models that maybe a key component like the battery may be inferior to the cheaper model in some way. The profit motive is far less obvious unless you are a CPA. Under US accounting - provisions for warranty claims need to be accrued each year, these accruals eat into profit because they show up as an expense, the longer the warranty period the bigger the expense, so there is a profit impact regardless of how confident you are in the longevity of the product. Tesla have figured that the 8Yr/100mi warranty on the base model is enough to provide sufficient confidence in buyers and positioned well enough so as not to cause doubt in the minds of potential LR and Performance buyers that they don't need / want to make it any longer.
I think one big problem is how much costs to repair a BYD or Tesla in your country in the case of a minor accident. Also ... their is a reapair shop in your region? How easy is to obtain spare parts?
First, you have to have the car well insured! Second, you have to calculate with a stand still of approximately two months if something happens! A video blogger in Finland had a small accident, impact from behind while standing in front of red light, with his Tesla Y. After 14.5 weeks the car was repaired! The shop though made a mistake! When they received the parts ordered, they realised that some more parts needed to be exchanged, and then they had to wait another 5-6 weeks. The repair took a couple of days including the paint work. Unfortunately, the insurance didn't cover the whole cost of the rental car... If you buy a new car, maybe you need to use it almost every day!? Then it will be a quite big problem if you can't use it for more than three(!) months! ☹️
@@thenewage9723 The problem (at least at Tesla ) is that is difficult to repear. The body is made from one part. A minor incident could mean total damage. In Israel they started selling in last 3 months of 2022 and now they are everywhere. The reception is mixed on it yes, mostly due to the price. This will be a very good option as a used car after 3 years, when their lease is up. I am still thinking of buying the tesla. BYD batteries are great, having it is good. The reason I want a tesla is the rest of the car. Software is everything and I want a car that has competent software. Bjorn Nyland tested the Atto3 recently and found that the cooling algorithm while charging is letting the battery overheat before kicking on 100%. Along with other complaints I heard from bad AC, bad lane keep assist, etc... They should really make better software. Likely depends on what car you are looking at. A $10k Seagull with a 38 kWh battery would need that battery to come in at $118/kWh to be 45% of the cost. An Atto 3 in China would need a $130/kWh for it to be 45%. In more expensive markets or for more expensive models, the equation changes. And that is net cost. If you are looking at manufacturing cost, the battery cost would need to be even less expensive.
- show me where to get automotive grade -AA, LiFePO4 cells for $150 per kWh - I want 100 right now. lol... (production cost ?? - not cost to retail (with warranty and QA.) - no there is no way an 80K Tesla is worth that - perception is key - the Verifiable - Tesla dead battery "swap out of warranty" price at cost, is about half the 32k guess (retail prices are rarely that low for a long miss) - and only on exchange basis with a valid VIN - ie. not available on the open market.
@@kadmow agreed, and Sam keeps saying battery cost is an incredibly high % of total manufacturing cost. He's said close to 50% on numerous videos, which is clearly BS. Even at $200 per kWH, the long range Model 3 batteries would cost around 12k, and there's no way the car costs only 24k total to produce. Cell cost is also only part of the total cost of the battery pack, so a reduction in cell cost doesn't lead to the same % reduction in total pack cost, making his claim for total vehicle cost reduction relative to cell cost decline even less accurate.

I own a Model Y, and have an improvement list as long as my arm, but it's still better than anything else (mostly). For example, IMO the interior looks like it was designed by the children's dept at IKEA. It's missing a lot of stuff that cheaper cars have (grab handles, HUD, and a gazillion other things) but it also has a pile of useless crap that no-one else has (fart mode for example). Until recently it also had an exclusive proprietary SuperCharger network, but that is no longer the case here in Australia 😞 The Y is actually too BIG for just 2 of us, so a Model Q/2 or a BYD Dolphin would be just the right size. I still haven't decided which.
I just wonder about the resale value of EVs since battery is the most expensive component of it and it is also the one that can degrade the most. Maybe you can do research on it and tell us.

Well one certainly would not purchase anything from LG Chem and the platforms that hold these batteries in them.... Nice Post....
BYD is a good buy. Worth the money. A lot of bad comments are ill intended
These days I really want to try Zeekr 001FR. It was said own 1265 hp and 0-100KM just need 2.07s. It seems like a monster on raod.
@@antonio_fosnjar yes they do degrade faster to begin with but obviously battery car will increase its useful life. Very few fail under warranty.
Good tips!
LG. Best BYD videos anywhere 🎉
I bet Chevy Bolt owners would have liked a BYD blade battery from the get go.
For Canadians you need to wait for BYD's Sodium-Ion battery cars. They are much better for people living in cold areas.

Also, beyond the car is the country. So many aspects and complexity of how and who and what if and should might be considered.
@@TheRealBrook1968 By that logic, then anything that isn't associated with the U.S. is fine.

I understand you believe LFP batteries are the best choice. I'm just wondering why they're the lowest warranty of any Tesla batteries. They only have 100,000 mi warranty versus 120,000 or 150,000 for the other varieties.
Good point. Possible because of the higher price of the car?
You need to check the price tag of the cars with higher warranty.
Cheers Sam mate

There's no way the battery pack is 45% of a car's cost now. A 50 kWH pack @ $150 or so per kWH would be only 7.5k or 10k @ $200
@larryevans6739 Yes, good point Larry, and there's no way the batteries of a 80k Tesla cost 32k+
- show me where to get automotive grade -AA, LiFePO4 cells for $150 per kWh - I want 100 right now. lol...
(production cost ?? - not cost to retail (with warranty and QA.)
- no there is no way an 80K Tesla is worth that - perception is key - the Verifiable - Tesla dead battery "swap out of warranty" price at cost, is about half the 32k guess (retail prices are rarely that low for a long miss) - and only on exchange basis with a valid VIN - ie. not available on the open market.

She did a video with Sam and she is suffering.

Is there a way to know what type of lfp batteries you have in your Tesla. I have a M3 rwd manufactured in china with Lfp battery. I suspect it is a catl battery but is there any way to know for sure?
For that you need to know the year it's being built.
It is a 2023 model manufactured the 30th of may
@@sarabystam9270 Have you asked Tesla? They have a complete record of every nut, bolt and everything else in your car, held in a database as a 'virtual' vehicle.

The Biggest problem I can see ...And its a big one ...
Its that the steering column is on the wrong side :)
The steering wheel is available on either side (just not in 'merica) ;-)
Viking, you need to criticize Tesla on its shortcomings for a balanced objective view. No EV is perfect. None of the 4,500 videos has an ounce of Tesla criticism. Quarter of your videos are in defence of Tesla every time there is a negative MSM article on Tesla.
Tesla is well known for quality issues for last 15 years.
I wouldn’t want to bite the hand that feeds me.
I started to watch this channel because of the BYD coverage. But anything positive lately has been accompanied by a negative statement. And also a "but Tesla," even when Tesla has nothing to do with it. Tesla and their leader have many flaws that have simply been ignored.
Hopefully this video means we will get back to a little more balanced coverage. There are already too many English-speaking Tesla fanboi channels out there... I don't need another one.
@@greghudson9717 Seal is larger than a model 3. A Dolphin would be more aligned in size to a car smaller than a 3.
@@larryevans6739 Thanks for correcting my error. Edited.
Thank you. I agree, however, in the last 15-20 years I've tried not to buy Chinese stuff if I have an alternative, due to the CCP.
Chinese companies is not the government.
@@elmohead A lot of them ARE chinese govt owned - GWM, and SAIC are 2 examples.
@@greghudson9717 You cant even get it right. GWM is privately owned.
@@greghudson9717 sure but GWM is not govt-owned. This is just a little bit different from the way we run things. In USA, companies own governments.
@@jim8149 I was told GWM is a subsidiary of SAIC. I stand corrected.
I just wonder about the resale value of EVs since battery is the most expensive component of it and it is also the one that can degrade the most. Maybe you can do research on it and tell us.
- so far we are in the Exuberance phase - dispair and realisation is a few more down the line - (Joking)... But the market is not at all mature yet - idiots paying wholly too much for 3+ year old fashionable appliances - essentially.
byd atto 3 here in the uk STARTS AT £37OOO they obviously dont want to sell any here lol
We need battery with energy density 500Wh /kg , everything below that is pure limitation of EV progress.
