I have a chronic illness that on not so good days is debilitating so I ditched the heavy fancy comforter with 11 pieces of pillows and decorative bedding. I switched it for a lightweight quilt and changed the multi layered drapes for 63 in grommet blackout curtains that are easy to open and close in my bedroom. This was the start of my decluttering journey. I am making life easy on myself.

What you said about chronic illness is spot on, I was a hoarder when I first got sick. At one point my health was so bad I crawled on my hands and knees to the bathroom and couldn’t lift myself up onto the toilet. But on my better days, when I got up to pee or eat, I scooped up a bunch of stuff into a box on my way back to bed and sat on my bed and sorted it (often under my duvet to block out the depressing mountain I still had left). I did that for 3 years until I got well enough to do bigger chunks. Now my house is minimal-ish and when I just got sick for 3 days, the worst that happened is I had enough dishes to put the dishwasher on. It is honestly life changing to just let myself rest and not feel guilty or have to burn out to catch up.

@@katia.luna213 thanks, it was hard work but I’m glad it’s over. It’s weird tho, the emotional attachment is still there. I moved across country 6 months ago and had to let a lot go at once to pack our house into a 4x2m van . When I got here there was a lot of grieving for what I let go of and this weird panic I might need it and couldn’t get it back. But it passed and I’m better with it now.

I believe when we accept what is happening to our bodies and physical limitations, things begin to get better. We are not fighting ourselves but rather being ok with ourselves. You able to see past the mess and move on. I went through a period of about 5 years after foot surgery in both feet coupled with fibromyalgia where I did the same thing. I would wash plate or 2 and sit down for 20 min. Then I would get up again to continue. I said to myself it would get done in baby steps. After 12 years, our house is down to what is essentially important. My health is much better and the anxiety is pretty much gone. I am enjoying living with less and more organized.

For a tip on how to get your kids to want to declutter: I started doing a "buy back" insentive. The amount of toys my kids had had reached it's limit. I had reached my limit. So I said I'm not buying anymore toys but I'll pay you x amount for every toy you donate or get rid of (essentially "buying it back" from them)and you can buy new toys with the money you earn. Really, I'm buying back my space and my sanity which is worth every penny!

They are now almost 12 & 15 and I will still do that if I see it getting out of hand.
This is great for my ADHD daughter who likes her things and can’t stand the thought of getting rid of them so she will give them to me for a small amount or if they are in excellent condition then she will want to give them to another child that may want it. She has such a big heart ♥️

I don't know what it's called in the US but I would take my kids to 'car boot sales' and they would sell their toys and whatever they made they could use towards something that they really wanted. My 18yo son still sells his old consoles and games to buy the latest ones!
I would also have my kids donate toys to children's hospitals and wards - they would come with me so they saw how much other children appreciated the stuff they didn't want anymore - it really sparked some awesome conversations and helped them learn empathy. ❤
Teaching kids the 'one in one out' rule is amazing too.

After getting rid of LOTS of antiques that were also heirloom and family treasured, I realized that I could visit old memories by going to antique stores. Realizing that my "treasures" were purchased from a store at some point and are just one of many made helps me focus on the memory and not the object. And I am a sucker for enamelware so I go and look at all the pieces, enjoy them where they are, and go home. It helps that i'm not a big shopper so i'm only there to look.

Hello - I got a huge head start on decluttering a few years ago. We had a house fire and lost absolutely everything. We were totally fine - with the love and help of others and insurance - we never went without a meal or clothes. It was tough for a while - but it showed me - all we NEED is our people. Even sentimental things I love are not necessary for happiness!!

I had a good day this weekend in which I had more energy, and used it to get ruthless on decluttering and then organizing our living room and homeschool area...it feels GREAT! We tossed three bags of trash, and got multiple boxes of donations in the car for me to drop off on our next trip to town! I definitely agree with the control aspect you mentioned-I dealt with that while working through these two rooms, but at the end of the day, I can see that letting go of that stuff has already been so much of a blessing in maintaining the spaces well, and I will take that over the stuff any day! That's basically how I've done it for the last 3 1/2 years - I'm okay not doing it, or not doing much, when I'm not feeling good, but on those occasions when I have the energy for it, I go full out (knowing I might pay for it afterwards, but hey, it's still 100% totally worth it!), sometimes staying up until 3 or 4 in the morning🤣, but if that's when I have the energy, I take it.
The first 2 times after college that I drove to my parents' house for Christmas, I had a full pickup truck load of stuff to get rid of (I'm terrible with figuring out worths for filling out donation receipts, but my mom is great at it, so she helps me with it, but the drive is 1,000 miles each way, so she can't just pop over to help me, hence why it happens only when I'm there), but nowadays, I usually only have a tote bag or two, and maybe a third if I have some things that are temperature sensitive (except last Christmas - I had just moved 3 months earlier, so I had a giant pile of stuff to get rid of sitting by the front door, even though I had already sent back 4 tote bags of stuff with a friend 2 1/2 months before I moved, and my parents also drove out to pick me up, so we had 2 cars to haul stuff back for donation instead of just my truck); I've now decluttered to the point that the things I'm getting rid of all fit easily into one drawer, making my cricket brain very happy (and making it super easy to put them in there as I come across things to get rid of), and still giving me that little high every time I put something in there, and then the big high when it finally gets out of there for good.

People often shy away from terms like 'training' but the reality is that we are teaching our children the skills they need for life.
Back in the ole' days (how old did I just make myself sound 😅) it was called 'home training'. And it'll set them up for uni or living with roommates or independently.
We as parents feel a lot of guilt for a lot of stuff - but this shouldn't be one of them. ❤

To your fan asking about energy being low from chronic illness, while I don't have that, i do have very bad depression and other issues that make it hard to get out of bed and I find giving myself grace, getting rid of things, making sure its easy to do the tasks, and above all - just do it. I chisel out a day where its quiet and I can handle my business without interruption because as much as I'd like to be a 15 minutes a day person, I'm not🤷‍♀️ except when I am. If you have little spurts of energy- pick up a few items off the counter, do a few dishes. But you don't need 10 bowls and 12 spoons for 2 people, and I cut down on my stress by decluttering dishes but people would get annoyed when they came and I didn't have 15 of everything 😒 so I got more and now I'm living in hell! Advocate for yourself and what makes life easier for YOU. I don't own a collinder - my pot has a lid that has holes, I don't need a collinder for washing fruit and veg when I have to lay them on paper towel to fully dry anyway 🤷‍♀️ I don't mop unless its bad, spot clean where you need to. Make a kid vacuum and make them take out the trash - if you don't have a kid, just try not to get crumbs on the carpet 🤷‍♀️ prioritize, minimize and energize - whatever that means for you! For me I have my energy in the morning and when no one else isaround. So on a day off I'lldo that weeks worth of dishes, and I'll diffuse essential oil or open the windows to let air in, I'll have a treat like chips and salsa and mountain dew (don't judge) or a chocolate coffee even though $3-4 for a bottle of mocha Frappuccino is INSANE, I know it makes me feel like I'm getting my life together and I deserve to live like that, that little splurge, and it makes me want to live in a nice cleanhouse. 😊write lists but know you won't get to all of the things on them and give yourself grace, but just having a plan helps so much! Dial it back, is another tip - dial back the holidays so you don't have so much prep, setup, and then the worst part- cleaning up and putting stuff away!!! Ew. It doesn't need to look like Santa's elves threw up Christmas all over your house cuz guess who gets to put that away? You. Make sure you're eating proper meals because your body will fight back if not! Take a multi vitamin, I found my pain is a lot less if I have vitamin A. I never would have thought it was important but I was reading somewhere low A can cause body aches and sure enough - I work freight and on truck days I can tell a difference if I took my vitamin that morning. But simplify it - take 1 or 2 supplements with your breakfast, even if its just juice, don't give yourself a huge vitamin routine you won't have the energy for. If you get in the swing of taking 1, then you can add in more as you see fit but I like the Alive women's Energy, my teens take the men's. It has everything you can think of but also I find fish oil helpful too, I can't remember why but if you could get some omega 3 it does help! It might be psychosomatic but rubbing essential oils for pain and inflammation help me because I have sciatica and frozen shoulder but no health insurance so check with your doc what essential oils to steer clear from but for me, the best is probably turmeric, chamomile, blue tansy and marjoram, now it won't last too long and it won't be complete but it can give you some momentary relief so you can tackle a few small tasks. Hot showers or baths as well! I add essential oils like marjoram, lavender, patchouli, chamomile, etc to bubble bath then add it to the water and it helps my muscles relax, which helps cuz when you are in pain, you tense those muscles and it makes pain worse so you get caught in a cycle of pain that doesn't end.

I just donated a bunch of random stuff today (boxes sitting in the laundry room for weeks). Feels good to have it out of the house! One of the things was a doll (porcelain head, hands and feet with cloth body) It was given to me by friends of my parents when I was a kid.. I kept thinking I needed to keep it because I've had it for close to 40 years - in a box for the past 30+ years. I thought maybe I should give it to my granddaughter (she's only 2 - not quite ready for a doll with porcelain parts) But I finally decided that obviously it isn't important to me since I'm not displaying it. One of my favorite rules of "the minimalists" is the spontaneous combustion rule. If this item would spontaneously combust, how would I feel. The answer was: relieved. Time to let it go :)

I have had long illnesses...Two things that I figured out after the "Big C" showed up again....good grippers (not what you buy at the dollar store). A huge dustpan with a handle. I got mine at Lowes. A low chair or ottoman allows you to sit and declutter off the floor without bending over. I get a lot done with these two things. Scoop up what you can with the dust pan. Keep a gripper around so if things fall on the ground you pick it up right away. Do small sessions. I do 20 minutes then I stop. I really stop at 20 minutes. A couple hours later I do another session. 2 sessions a day is often all I can do. That is okay. Also even if you are another bug, try the easier solutions that work for butterflies. Take off the lids, add hooks, take out any steps you can in putting things away. Make putting away easier...use macro ways to categorize. Allow yourself to get help. For birthdays I ask for help instead of a gift. Put your embarrassment aside! I take down the level of what I expect my home to look like when going through treatment.

High fatigue, high pain levels the reducing steps would work well for me. Thanks for the ideas.

So enjoyed this!!! I absolutely love your gentle approach to getting your kids to pick up and organize their rooms in their own way. I fussed and fussed for years to no avail. I redecorated my son’s room years ago and put in new shelving units in his closet to help motivate him to be more tidy. However, it just didn’t work for him and his room continued to be a disaster. If I had taken a different approach, gotten him more involved in the planning and let him choose the method of organization, things may have turned out differently.

"90% of organization is about self-confidence and self-awareness." - Cas
Sooooo good. That quote right there deserves its place on top of a calendar/planner! Thanks Cas.
When you said 'the stuff has got to go' when answering the question about a chronic illness and how to declutter, it made me have that little "oh!" inside. Even though I give stuff away ALL the time, I organize my give away boxes by like items, I'll change box sizes and refold the clothes to fit, I'll make outfits of the kids clothes and fold them together. I do it and I don't want to be doing that. I'm saying - just put it by the road! Ugh. I need to set some stuff out today and NOT organize it first. 😣 So today I'm saying "the stuff has got to go!"
Besides - We just took our 16 year old niece to be part of our family, so now I have one more kid's stuff making it three boys (11, 5, 2) plus this sweet precious girl! We have A LOT! Thanks for the motivation. (Now I'm going to go tell them that we can watch a movie tonight if they help mom get the stuff to the curb!)
By the way - we live on a street that is the main road in to a lot of residential areas. I set my stuff a little up into the driveway so someone can pull in and I made a "FREE" sign and use it all the time. I've had people come multiple times and if I get a chance to say Hi, I've heard them tell me what they got the last time I had stuff out. Warms my heart. I don't need to know them but I'm glad they had a need met. 💙 Just an idea to help those that can't ever seem to get that donation stuff dropped off.

The timing of this is perfect. I'm getting ready to move from the house I've been in for 30+ years. I've been driving myself crazy trying to find the "perfect" home for things I no longer wanted to keep. But then I had all these different piles around the house for Charity A, Organization B, etc and when would I get over to their location that was 20 miles away and, oh dear, they're still not accepting donations because of COVID or doing inventory. I finally came to the same conclusion you suggest - it's more important to get it out of my house than to get it to the "best" home. Very freeing and giving to my local generic charity is still better than sending perfectly good things to the landfill.

I totally agree, Cas. No one needs stuff if they don't have the energy or ability to deal with it.

    • @SnowySpiritRuby
      @SnowySpiritRuby 2 роки тому +8

As someone with chronic illness and limited energy, I agree with Cas, too.
However, as for the answer that I personally would give to your getting the energy in the first place question, "Easy - I acquired most of the stuff before I got sick. Simple as that." I'm eternally grateful that I was well over a year into my decluttering journey when I got sick, because I don't think I would have been able to declutter otherwise, at least not nearly as much as I have, not without a ton of help that I wouldn't have had access to. Probably one of the biggest perks, in my opinion, of having so little stuff (at least out in the open, not behind closed doors - I'm a cricket) is that I can walk literally anywhere in my house at night, lights off, unable to see a thing, and I know I'm never going to trip over anything ever (I don't have stairs, so that's not a factor).

    • @SweetStuffOnMonarchLane
      @SweetStuffOnMonarchLane 2 роки тому +5

I agree too... I'm so busy with work I can only go shopping once a month, sometimes once every two months, so I have to stock up when I can. Also if something is on sale I know I will use, I buy extra so I don't have to think about putting it on my list next time. The trick is having the space to not lose track of it so you know what you have. For example, I might look at my vitamin stash and think, "ok, am I going to need more of these before I can go shopping again in a month?" If yes, then I need to buy some this time so I don't run out.

I don’t mind what other people choose to do, but to me it is crazy to only have a roll of toilet paper in a house of many. My family was literally like this and as a result ended up with someone running (literally on foot) to the convenience store to buy one more roll….until they ran out again, it never crossed their mind. The wasteful spending on something you know you are going to need is just funny/strange to me and not how I want to live. I don’t want a room for toilet paper, but I don’t want to be sitting on a toilet waiting on granny to get back from the corner store either. 😆
Edit to say: I just wanted to add that when I said wasteful spending I was in reference to the extra cost my family paid for buying one roll of toilet paper at a convenience store price. It was more for 1 roll there, than a big pack somewhere else.

    • @cajbaf
      @cajbaf 2 роки тому +5

I get that. Like I said I am not an extreme prepper. I always have 6 to 8 cans of things I use regularly. I don't hoard toilet paper but will always have two or three packs on hand. I only purchase however many I used when I go to the store. On a limited income it works for me as I don't spend large amounts for groceries. It's not wasteless spending. You do what works for you.

I can carry that from area to area to go through things, I even have 1 for each room. I will put things that I know whats going to be in them, extra shampoo or toothpaste in the one in the bathroom so I can sit while brushing my teeth. The one in the kitchen has boxes of Kraft mac&cheese. I got myself some Dollar Tree laundry baskets, I got multiple colors so each color is a different thing, like pink is donation, so if one of my friends comes over to help a little I can ask them to take everything in the pink baskets to donate, or everything in the white baskets is recycle. It has helped me to start to declutter. Also grocery bags are my go to for trash bags, I do not have the energy or ability to carry the big heavy trash bags to the dumpster. I am not one for doing dishes at night cause I get home late every day, so when I'm cooking my breakfast I know I have 4 minutes to do dishes while it's cooking at the beginning then I have 5 minutes after I stir it so I can get one other thing done in the kitchen.

He clipped layers of papers to the front of the bins! It was worse than ever. Finally I couldn’t stand it anymore so I bought identical bins and went thru every piece of paper. Each bin had a purpose except for his 3 bins of 16 clipboards each with a piece of paper on them. My system didn’t work for him of course so now the bins have the clipboards laying across the top of them. We can both live with this.

I've be watching a lot of your older videos, but this Q&A is like a my enlightening moment! I struggle with my teens daily about how trashed their bedrooms are. It has gotta so bad in the last couple of years. Your suggestions of YOU COME FIRST - holy moly, that is the literal mindset I needed. My home is very tidy and organized, I'm always been that way since childhood. But letting go of the fact my kids are who they are will lighten that stress on me. Hey, that's why they have doors that can close on that mess! Thanks soo much for this real talk, you are very inspirational no matter what you think!❤❤❤

I am a bit late but I have to tell you this is the HANDS DOWN BEST ADVICE on getting others in your family to get involved without drama! I started last year WITH MY STUFF and decluttered at least half of it and your right a miracle happened boxes I didn't fill started filling up and rooms became tidier! And Thank you for emphasizing starting with our own things because that is how we are mirroring positive behavior and not punishing and getting an avoidance response. Thank you for your wonderful content!

That was such a fun chat! I think it really helped me understand your concepts even though I have been watching you for awhile. Your discussion, breaking down visual versus hidden also helped. Thanks and I hope you do decide to do this again. And I hope I can catch you LIVE

Yes, would love to see more of these Q & A!
    I haven't given up.
I'm on week 3 and still making progress with 1-3 decluttering sessions per week and posting UA-cam videos of my progress. One session at a time, a few minutes of progress at a time. I'm looking forward to not having all that clutter in my home and in my head! Lol
Thanks again for sharing your journey with us!❤

You are definitely a new lifestyle!!
My son is very depressed and has ADHD, he is overwhelmed with things that need to be done, yet he can’t do!!
He is 24 college graduate that lives at home. COVID is really affecting him. I got COVID last year, got so sick I had to get double lung transplant.
Anyway, have you made any videos for people with depression or ADHD? Or can you recommend videos? You are awesome!

I listed my collection ( not a lot) that was taking up valuable real estate in my cabinets. I put a ridiculous low price on it. It sold in 3 minutes! An hour later it was out of my house, and it felt so good!!

At Christmas time when I was kid, I remember hearing my mom's sewing machine running into the wee morning hours. Christmas morning I was so happy to open gifts of the most beautiful Barbie clothes she had made.... Business suits, a wedding dress, and even little satin under garments! That beautiful little wardrobe is THE only thing I regret getting rid of.

I stopped the video after the disabled question and answer and went straight to my closet to pull out 2 dresses that didn’t fit that I had been hanging onto because of all those reasons we do that. Still had tags, paid good money, might fit better when I lose weight etc. I came out with half a bag of easy things.
Good answer. I have to do the hard stuff even if I don’t like it. Now back to the video….

It's a little funny listening to this because I'm in BC in the middle of bad flooding. My city is completely cut off via road from everywhere else and the grocery shelves are bare. I've never seen it so bad. We are not stock pilers, and this is the first time ever I've regretted it 😅

I am really going to focus on the one bin (in my house it’s drawers) at a time rule for my kids! I’ve tried telling them “put things away before getting another thing out” but your explanation is so much more specific and kids definitely need that. Thank you!

My struggle is my mom’s guilt trip training. She ALWAYS made sure to tell me something’s monetary value and that if I ever get rid of it to just give it back to her. That was with a hint of me having it forever. And ever. And ever. lol. She passed two years ago and her stuff that was sentimental to her or valuable to her is right here. Right here in my den. I’m afraid I’m going to give something valuable to charity. Or worse, to someone who won’t know its value. Dishes she used a child. Doilies that must mean something. And much more. I’m legitimately scared to get rid of it. lol lol
    Thanks Mom! 😂🤪😂

If you have a lot of items, you might want to talk to people who do estate sales or auction off items. They know the price of the items and how to market them.
I was afraid to do this and I'm still dealing with this stuff. I'm finding that the market has changed and some stuff might be harder to sell. If you do this now, you might be able to get the cash and invest it in something that will allow your money to grow which will satisfy your mother's monetary issues while finding a good home with someone who will love and value that item.

I just want to thank you for discovering and giving us the 4 organizing styles. That was life changing for me. I'm a Bee. I never understood how my closets could look clean and organized but I'd have clutter surrounding me. People would be shocked when they opened my cupboards and drawers because they looked so good, when every surface in my home was covered. Now I understand what I do to myself. I keep things organized and out of sight that I don't need or use. Then I use the stuff that's all around me. I think I have the hardest job of all because I have to first make space before I can put stuff away. But that means dismantling the organized and good looking cupboards and drawers and make space for what I use. But then I have to remember what I did, because out of sight out of mind. Jeesh! I don't have a lot of wall space to use visible organizing. But knowing how I sabotage myself all these years has been so helpful.
