My favorite thing about bins in any room is that instead of squatting down and rifling through stuff or needing a stool to look on a shelf etc I can just pull down the basket/bin grab what I need and then place the bin back. May sound lazy but I have arthritis and back issues and being able to simply pull things to waist height really saves me from a lot of physical pain.

As an "older" viewer who has raised 4 daughters, I have and still do, use many of these tips. We live in a cottage in the mountains and have the original 1946 kitchen, which is quite small, so storage is a huge problem. Containers are the only way to go for me and I have been decanting for years as it is the only way I can fit what I need into my cupboards. Also, once you get things organized and labeled, you will find putting things away in the same place each time becomes a habit and as you get older, that this is very helpful when you start to forget where you put things. LOL!!! If everything has a place, then you won't tend to put something in the wrong place and you rarely will loose anything.

Kallie, you're a life safer. I was verging on becoming a full blown hoarder a few years ago. After bereavement therapy I realised I was filling a void with "stuff" and becoming addicted to getting that "5 min fix" from shopping for "stuff" You've literally saved me from spiralling back into those bad habits. Just watching you gives me so much motivation & I've developed tidy habits without even trying. I feel so much better mentally and physically, now that I'm not holding onto so much "stuff". Your explanation about labels makes so much sense... will be trying that next. Thank you so much 💓

Bins to compartmentalize and contain have been great for me too. In an effort to be less wasteful, my main alteration from the bin/basket trend has been to reuse as much as possible. A lot of things I buy come in tins, glass or plastics that can actually look nice or cute, or I simply add a sticker, and they work wonderfully without having to buy anything new.

  • @maryl.8417
    @maryl.8417 2 роки тому +63

I have been decanting for years! It’s great, keep everything fresh, looks so much nicer, less waste, and bug free. Some things I’ve learned: square containers fit better than rounds because they are easier to stack. I tape the instructions (if needed) inside the top of the lid, and I label the expiration dates on the bottom or front of the container if it’s an infrequently used item so I know I need to use it before then and it becomes a part of my weekly meal plan. I use turntables for jams, condiments, etc. and my spices are in racks. As for vertical stacking of clothes (horizontal? Vertical? Both?) I fold pajama tops and bottoms together so that when I pull one part out, the other is with it. I had not considered doing this with sheets. What a great idea! Love this video. 😇

I've file folded clothes for years and it is such a space/time saver. I also organize my closet by sleeve length, casual or dress, and then color. It may take a minute to do the first time. But it's SO much easier to find the exact thing I want to wear. I know what length the sleeves are. I know what color it is. I know if it's casual or dress. So I can go directly to the section it belongs in and find it immediately. It also, as you mentioned does my my closet look really nice too 🙂

When you talked about decanting in one of your previous videos, I did that then in my kitchen. It is a huge huge improvement. It also creates less stress because visually it looks neat instead of all this writing all over the place that's made to try to catch your attention. I really wish I could decant my kitchen. My boyfriend is basically a nomad, going from job to job in state to state and he has given me a lot of his old crap and loves to cook. I want to get rid of it but when he comes to visit he wants a specific thing that he gave me to cook with and he has given me so much stuff he can't find it through the clutter. I guess another option would be to put all the stuff he gave me that I don't use in a bin in my storage section of the house and bring it out when he visits - hmmm.

I love the idea of folding the sheets into a matching package! I have a lot of extra linens so it helps me to put them into large zip lock bags (2 -5 gallon) so I can see what they are at a glance. Also, spiders can't sneak in. I agree with you about how important it is to assess the area you are working on first, then go purchase the bin. I have made the mistake of gathering a plethora of different bins, then the bins, themselves, became more clutter! Also, I would get analysis paralysis over which bin to use for which space!

A few people asked about expiration dates. What I do, especially with spices and less frequently used baking goods, is add a second label on the bottom with the expiration date. More eco friendly, slightly more work up front but much easier and quicker at the end of the process - take it home and stick it on the shelf and job done! and thanks for the kick up the butt - i finally did some file folding and have SO much extra space in my drawers. awesome ;)

For decanting... Do you do anything to keep up with expiration dates? There's certain things I only use on occasion that I'd be afraid might expire... I know you said you find you waste less but I'm assuming there's still things on occasion.
I cannot keep up the filing clothes thing. I've tried multiple times. It's just not sustainable with me. But I did recently discover that rolling my clothes essentially establishes the same thing and I can do that because it's much more mindless for me.
Also idk what clicked for me yesterday but I finally got the "done is better than trying to be perfect and not doing it" finally sunk in and my cleaning paralysis seemed to break. I've been using your, and Dana K White, and ClutterBug's tips (I'm a butterfly) to help me the past 24 hours or so and they've all been great so far.
Right now my labeling system is just paper I tape on stuff but it's helping and I eventually do wanna get the cutesy labels. I am having to pace myself because I definitely don't have the money to get all the organization things right now but I am finding what I think might work for me and starting to create a list so I can get things as I'm able

I am similar to you. I also roll my clothes in my drawers, file my Undies and socks, and hang my bras! They take up less space hanging than trying to keep them neat in a drawer.
And yeah the better not perfect idea was a game changer for me.
And just cheap sticky labels that I write on with a sharpie is fine, when I know it works that way for months, then I consider better labels.

On things like spices and different baking goods I add a second label on the bottom with the expiration date. This helps a lot with items I use less frequently.

I love when things I have done my whole life or my mom showed me become trendy 😁
One thing I did for my special needs daughter: her shirts are in cubby bins. I rotate the current season into an area without an actual bin. It visually does the same thing as the horizontal folding. She can SEE her stack of shirts and not just wear the one from the top of the bin.

I started storing sheet & towel sets in packing cubes (credit for the idea goes to Sally Combs - Lug). On the top shelf of the linen closet, I stack them vertically (like books). They stay put and it makes better use of that space that would otherwise go to waste.

I love the file method for clothes. Especially for the kids. At the end of the week though it is kinda out of whack. But not so much as if it were regular stacks.
The main reason I did it was bc they can see which shirt they wanted without messing up the rest. 2nd is bc it looks super cool.

Kallie, great video. I loved and laughed about the bins. I'm a bin-a-holic. For years I'd buy bins just because I knew I needed "something" for a particular purpose or drawer without first evaluating whether it would fit, or if it was practical, or if there was a style better suited to the need. I had to learn the hard way that a square bin by XYZ may not be the same version of square by PDQ manufacturer (one may be perfectly square, while one may taper down); not all bins stack the way they're supposed to; not all kitchen drawer utensil organizers are the same even though they may appear that way; and that the very same bin you want to get this year (to match your existing kitchen set, for example) may have an entirely different lid style or internal area shape than what you have now!

I joined the air fryer club a little late too! Bought one that's multi function (slow cooking, sous vid, grill, steam, etc). It allowed me to get rid of other single purpose items in my kitchen. Starting to replace some of my bins with clear bins in the fridge. Doing it as my budget allows.

I started file folding like this a few years ago. I started with kids clothes then adult underwear t-shirts. I've phased it in until I got in the habit. Sheet sets folded together is awesome! My overstock is pillow cases. It's fine with me. I still put them horizontal because they are on a high shelf. Clear bins here I come.

I do the file folding with some clothes - underwear, jeans, other pants and capris, and organise all clothes by colour. The folding takes up less space, you don't make a mess getting things out, and it's easier to find them. Pass on decanting. My pantry's organised so I don't buy things I already have. Also pass on labelling things, but I live by myself. I can see how it'd be helpful if you have kids, or just a partner.

We put the top, bottom and one pillow case, fold it, and stuff it into the remaining pillowcase - that way they are even more compact and don't fall apart if someone's rummaging through the closet. But with my kids' sheets - we just do a double fold, and slide them under their mattress - makes storing SO much easier - and we can still get 2 sets in between the mattress and box spring.

I've been file folding my tee shirts and socks since the early '80s. (Major OCD) Was stunned to find Marie Kondo does it the same way! I tried making packages of sheet sets by putting them inside a pillow case, but that was very messy compared to my ocd-folded stacks. I'm going to try your flat-sheet-wrap method now, it's making my inner ocd purr! I've tried decanting a few things, but considering I line up the original packaging with the edge of the shelf like some kind of Sleeping With The Enemy psycho, I only decant one or two things.

I store our bed sheets set in a sweater bag including the matching pillow cases, so they all stay together as a group, and they are see through bags, so it is easy to grab without opening each bag to see which style sheets I want to use at that time. I fold them nice and flat, folded just little smaller than the inner dimensions of the bag, so they store uniform and stackable, one sweater bag on top of each other. I've been doing this method for years.
