I’m sorry this probably doesn’t make sense to put my comment here, but it’s the only way I was able to comment today 😞 First - good for you on making your appointment! I am praying for you. A lady commented about being disabled and being tested for cancer. The things you said to her were so beneficial to me, as well. I am chronically ill with several different diseases and disabled as a result. My energy level many days is non-existent. But I try doing this in baby steps. Every step forward is still a step in the right direction. A step is a step! I just wanted to say thank you! You have helped me over the last year more than you know. I know it’s a lot of work for you, but please know how much you are appreciated. YOU ARE AMAZING!!! ❤

If all day cluttering is too much for people, please let them know that they can do only what hours they want when they want! Especially if energy limitations!, I go back to the course recordings and listen and declutter when I have some time and the energy.
Works much better for some of us!

I'm seeing a few chats of people struggling with messy neurodivergent kids. I just wanted to share that I have ADHD and was an INCREDIBLY messy child - unintentionally. I just didn't see the mess or clutter. My mum desperately tried to teach me differently but it did not work. It took growing up and going through experiences to learn it. Now I am super organized. You're not failing as a parent if you can't teach your neurodivergent child to take care of their environment. Give yourself and them grace. As long as you get them professional help, and lots of love, they will sort themselves out. If they're still 'a mess' after their mid-20s, then you can teach them structure because they'll have more bandwidth for it at a calmer, more attentive age.

@@lovefortruth3414 body doubling can really help! Even if through UA-cam, having a video of someone else decluttering or cleaning on in the background whilst you do the same kinds of jobs can help with some of the hurdles stopping you from moving, and help motivate you! (One ADHD UA-camr couple even made an app for body doubling, I believe, called Dubbii specifically for body doubling videos - although I haven’t used it; I enjoy the series of videos by the channel The Space Maker Method - long videos, lots of them from the same declutterers, and realistic amounts of clutter for people who KEEP STUFF. I find watching a video or two can get me motivated enough to get moving, and I love having it run in a playlist as I go!
It might also help to have a kind of “vision board” of your ideal space you keep for yourself. As you do tidying passes you may find it becoming more and more believable that you’ll get there, which can be super motivating!
Also, taking Before and After photos! It proves that things HAVE improved, which is again another source of confidence-boosting and showing yourself you can do it! (Just don’t forget to take the before photo! I always forget!)
Wishing you luck, I hope any of this might help!

@@lovefortruth3414 I have ADHD as well. My husband too, our child is too young to be diagnozed yet. I feel you.
The hard reality is: you can get yourself help to be with you, to question your decitions, but in the end you need to do the work. You need to decide how you want to live, how much time, money and work you want to put into it. Because it is your life.
But some things may help you. Ask yourself what you like and what you need. E. g. I need a calming place to feel save, secure and to relax. So my home has a colour scheme with only a few colours. I love colours, but at home I need this relaxed, calmer place. A good friend of mine who has ADHD too said to me she couldn't live in my home. Her home is very colourful because that colours give her the power to get through her day. I love to visit her but after some time it would be too much for me. It really depends on what you need and want.
You can choose colours, zone different actions like dining zone, cooking zone, sleeping zone... But you can zone for other actions like music, dancing, painting as well. Once you have decided which zones/actions you need you can put everything you need for it there. And you can combine some actions. E. g. you may need your bedroom to sleep at night. But at day you can use it otherwise.
I personally found it helpful to watch different videos from different creators about Interieur Design to understand how they plan different rooms and styles.
Try to make your life as easy as possible. And give yourself the grace you would give your best friend. It doesn't need to be perfect. It only needs to fit your life.

For the person who said that their house is very run down/has lots of things that need fixing I recommend watching videos by Remi Clog. She lives in the north of England and helps several family members who have major issues with messiness but also damp and mold, old and small houses, her aunt hasn’t had heat or hot water all winter… it’s the antidote for all the fancy spaces you tend to see on American channels. And her voiceover is very positive and encouraging. She talks a lot about doing what you can to get spaces tidy and clean even if there are other problems that can’t be fixed right now. Midwest Magic Cleaning also does cleaning in very un-fancy homes in the rural Midwest, some really hoarded, some just cluttered and run down.

Even adding in that I have recently had to declutter to downsize from 4 bedrooms 3 baths living room dining room media room kitchen to a 2 bedroom 2 baths - & I don’t do the Facebook thing, but it is still great without that! It has been so useful to replay the courses& the take your house back days - very very very Helpful!!! Especially with the blending of Cas, Dawn, & Dana’s styles of decluttering & organizing advantages in each style help in different ways - So Great!!! Thank you for the course, Cas!!!

So so true. After a fiasco/fail trying to Marie Kondo all my clothing I switched to just plucking things from here and there for donation+. When I started to see a real difference I then started on half a closet, or a drawer or shelf. It's probably taken much longer but is far less stressful on me. I'm still not to the point of maintenence yet but finally things are much more manageable without crash and burn issues or worse, giving up.

Yes I am also very very thankful that she went through different methods because I have about 10 maybe even 15% of my clutter which is crazy is self-help books on organization skills I have severe ADHD and they are almost neatly in the pile to the left as you walk in my bedroom door but that does not count the ones that are in the bathroom sitting next to the bathtub and the ones that are on my kitchen table in my ever-growing Tower of clutter and also next to the recliner and the rocker because I can make my house go from Christine everything in place to looking like tornadoes and hurricanes went through every thrift shop in the five state radius then carried everything it sucked up from those places and dumped it in my house and that always happens whenever I get a wild hair and decide I'm sick and tired of living in clutter jumping over things everything's an obstacle course and finding 15 containers of course sea salt in pink and another three in white who am I finally grab everything out of my kitchen cabinets That's a lot of salt.

I did a modified version of intuitive with my sentimental box. I realised that I didn’t like a lot of it and was only holding on to it because I’ve had it since the 80s. So I started asking myself am I just keeping it because it’s old or part of a collection. Once I put something in the donate box, I listened to my instinct about it and was actually a relief so it stayed in that box. It was 100% successful. ❤

Dana's container concept no mess method saved me. I was always very minimalist and still am for my stuff. I used to move a lot all over the world, just with two suitcases. That was while I was studying, so it was also always tiny studio apartments with zero storage space. So I really just lived with the essentials.
But then I settled down and started having kids. And for whatever reason, everything is important just in case with them for me. It took less than a year to get completely overcrowded with baby/kids stuff. And it was such an over-thinking problem to get rid of any of it, since I always thought with everything one of the kids may still need it.
Now I'm doing the easter egg method to maintain our space - great for toddlers and my ADHD self. Usually I do it in a fit of ADHD rage, roughly once a month when I feel overwhelmed and don't stop until 2 garbage bags are full, one with trash, one for donations. Takes 15 to 20 minutes and is so satisfying without making a mess.
Because I'm 100% with you, gathering everything to declutter is an absolute nightmare. I tried that in the very beginning one time, and after gathering all our back then 1 year olds toys, I closed her room, and that pile stayed like that for several weeks, that's how bad it overwhelmed me - an entire room unusable. But I'm happy that I had that experience, because it made me look online for solutions and that's how I stumbled over you, Dana and Dawn - the three of you truly changed my life.

I enjoy your lives. I am like one of the people who mentioned that they're continuing to purchase things while trying to declutter. I have 20 plus years of things that I am trying to get rid of and organize. I have projects coming up with garden season and I see things that will help me to hopefully produce a good garden and me and spouse is planning on a cruise later in the year. Previously I was not participating in the care of my home I did some housework here and there but my husband was the main person contributing to the housework. I've turned over a new leaf since my mom passed away last year. She always kept her home tidy and cleaned. Right now I have boxes and reusable bags with things in the spare bedroom trying to donate or find a place for. Pray for me as I work on my home

I keep buying stuff too, while trying to declutter. I know that some of it will have to be decluttered sooner rather than later. Everything I buy is bought with the intention of making life easier or more pleasant for me, or more fun for my kitten. But I HAVE to stop. The space we have is the space we have - that, and no more. I have a new method for dealing with my purchases, which is that when they arrive, I must find homes for them. If I am unsure, they stay in a pile, and if I can't home them by the return window, back they go! So far, so good!

    Dana’s No Mess Method
    5 step decluttering process ❤️
    1. Easiest of the easiest step- Trash. -No decisions to be made. Black trash bag is ideal so you can’t see what you throw away. -changes how I view the pile, gets me moving without any decision making..just throwing away obvious trash.
    2. What in here do I already know where it goes (easy decision/obvious location)? Take it there now, one item at a time.- Something that already has an established home: laundry, kitchen stuff, cd’s, crafts, cleaning supplies, music stuff..
    3. Duh clutter. “Duh, why is this here?” If something obviously needs to go to donate box, just do it.
    4. (Difficult stuff) One item at a time: if I needed this item where would I look for it first (instinct based)? Do not make a pile, take it there now, it guarantees progress! [You only ask if you can’t answer the first question.] (Reality check) If I needed this item, would it ever occur to me that I already have one (things you would do without or you’d go buy one: fishing line)? If I needed fishing line would it ever occur to me that I already had some, or would I buy more? If I would never go looking for it, I’d go buy another one, and end up with 2. That’s the opposite of decluttering, throw it out/donate. If in the future is it worth $5 to me to have this space decluttered (which was my goal) from now to when I might need fishing line? [Realistically if I wasn’t decluttering, I wouldn’t know I had fishing line and I would have bought another one anyway.] There’s only a 10% chance you’d have to buy that again anyway. [You’ve already moved everything out could see and get to without pulling everything out that was trash, easy to put in locations, or donate.]
    5. Container concept: Consolidate- put scissors together, glitter together (forces you to touch each item) You’ll be able to get rid of Duh clutter and trash- “Oh I hate these scissors, they don’t work”. “Oh I have 27 makeup brushes, I don’t need that many brushes, I’ll get rid of 5. Now I have 22 brushes and they still don’t fit in the container.” Put favorite ones in first, until you’re out of room. Which ones do I like the least? Until the container is usable, and not packed tight. Which of these are more important to me, which ones deserve the space? Deal with one item at a time, scissors, paper, glitter. Never make a bigger mess, just make progress by one item at a time.

Now I’m starting to look at what is practical in my home like I made a taller firewood box on castors for the lounge so I can clean under and around it and wheel it to the front door so I don’t traipse grass and mud inside and it’s safer. Also made a firewood shelter in the garage which holds 6 barrows full instead of keeping the barrows full of wood and unusable. These kind of things are making me feel calmer and next level organised.

I’m so glad someone mentioned and you discussed it-about the house falling apart. For the longest time I had no money left for repairs-then my long term relationship ended and I shop therapied my way to high credit card debt. Some of that debt was a few things to transform my room etc and I love the room now! There’s some bad spots in the house but the main rooms I use I’m working on to make it amazing. I’ll be back to decluttering soon as I get spaces cleared and ready for repairs to happen.

The live declutter aspect was GENIUS so whoever came up with that, wow.👌🏻 That basically is body doubling which is such a helpful technique to so many. (In my opinion especially if you have ADHD)

It's kind of like the "touch it once" method I used last time.
I decide where it goes and put it there immediately. There are some containers to help minimize running around the house.
I also used your "not everything has to be folded" method too.

Suggestion for a video- how to be a minimalist and fully enjoy hobbies that seem to need a lot of stuff(quilting and cross stitch). I'm sure there are others that easily cause accumulation- woodworking and sports and others. I've tamed my extra stuff around reading and gardening, so I know it's possible.

I've been watching your "tough love" videos. I really wish there were more on youtube like that. And not oh im being blunt but still in a coddly way... But just, get off your ass are you really you going to live like that?! It works for me. It's the only thing that makes me feel shame in a good way to where its like yeah this is crazy i have to get it together. I saved this tiktok video the other day from a woman who was reacting to the really messy house cleaning tiktoks and she said "we need to bring back shame. And embarassment." And it just sounded so spot on. I think that's what SO many of us really need to hear. 🙌🏻

I was inspired and had decluttered my candle storage a few weeks ago (I thought), but after hearing you talk about how crazy it was to put a candle back into storage if you didn't really like the scent, I went back in and decluttered again ... Candle scents I didn't like are now gone. Incense I've stored for decades - gone. Candlesticks I never burn - gone. Wax burners I haven't used in years - gone. Plug-ins I'm just storing - gone.... What's left now are all of my favorite candles. And I know exactly what I have because I can easily SEE everything now. ...I may revisit my medicine and lotions in the same way. I've gotten rid of SO much, but I know there's more purging to do. The process is getting so much easier now. Thank you for the inspiration!
Another inspiration for me has been deactivating social media. It's designed to mine our attention. Although I didn't post often and only checked it out in the evenings from my laptop, it was time spent doing literally nothing for myself. Decluttering messages, like yours, have to sink in. So, freeing myself from social media, gave me the time to keep what you're saying in my thoughts. I'm happy to say that I'm getting super excited about all the positive changes I'm making.

I joined and you should too. this is the only thing that has ever worked. funny thing happened while I was decluttering. I found 4 decluttering, organizational books!!! I donated them, well all items are usually never in the same place, so as I continue to declutter [now because it's fun and very rewarding]. I found 2 more books lol lol those organizational and decluttering books just didn't work, but this programs with these 3 women does WORK!!!!!! even if you procrastinate and don't do it right away, you can go back and use it whenever forever. top shelf investment!!! run don't walk to order; you will not regret it.

I needed to get rid of a lot more than I thought so that I had free space ready for life and projects. There’s always something that needs to be returned to someone, charity shop box, read when have more time / energy, tickets for something, washing at some stage of cycle. All of this stuff made my home messier if it was out somewhere thinking just a temporary home and place will be tidy once those tasks done!

If your house is falling apart, it’s great to declutter so you can repair when you can. My ex-hoarder wanted to line the shed without decluttering so it was a case of just moving stuff from wall to wall. Totally ignored me about cleaning out. Now the house has space I’ve been able to paint and fix a lot of small things and it’s giving me confidence to get it all in order. Yes my house is lipstick on a pig but it’s so much better.
