I am currently in the process of recompleting DK64 myself and I absolutely agree with you. The charme and personality of this game are to this day through the roof but completing it, or honestly even playing it, is getting tiresome at some point. I still love it because like you I honestly worshiped this game as a kid but I can still acknowledge its flaws.
A game needing an expansion pak on N64 where you change between various forms of Monkey's, to use their unique abilities and musical instruments to solve puzzles, defeat bosses, and save fairies..... You're playing Majora's Mask with Monkeys!
Man I’ll never forget getting the DK64 Nintendo bundle when I was a kid! I sunk many many hours into this game and to this day it is still one of my all time favorites!! Oh how I wish for an HD remake!!
Collectathons weren't really my thing growing up, but now that I'm older and got into some metroidvanias I think I get the appeal. Getting into games like that without a guide and trying to find everything the game has to offer just by exploring is definitely something I can appreciate in the age of the internet.
I completed this game yesterday 101% I had a lot of fun but I also CURSED certain aspects of the game, I managed to get all the things in one go, only needed to backtrack on Jungle Japes and Angry Aztec for the new Kongs (and Fungi forest for the rabbit race). Save states helped keep my sanity tbh, I hated every second I had to play OG Donkey Kong and Beaver Bother...
DUDE. I gotta play this game again. I don’t know how long it’s been but The first bit of music that played from the game brought such a calming wave of nostalgia and I’ll never not think of it till I play it again lol
Jirard, what you've mentioned about completion in collect-a-thons, and how you've changed as you've aged is something that hits close to home. I complete games too myself; ranging from Disgaea to The Binding of Isaac, from Katamari Damacy to A Hat in Time. But for many, many years now, I've been apprehensive in my approach to games based on their completion criteria and missable content or trophies. It even got so bad at one point that I save scummed to save the first NPC in danger once you got your first gun in Fallout: New Vegas. Needless to say, I am my own worst enemy for actually getting proper enjoyment and engagement in games anymore now. I think a lot of that stemmed from spending a few years after high school as a full time game tester having to go through that repetition that was test cases. That was the setup, and then I got my PS3. Trophies became my addiction. Oh, this game has missable content? Better find a spoiler free walkthrough, and follow along pausing after every event to double check that nothing missable just opened up. (Note: This was most notably present in JRPGs that took well over 60 hours to finish, and I did not want to do a repeat run if I could help it.) Does the game have difficulty settings that require "getting good" to extreme extents? Well, nope! ...or use an alt account to try it out. I mean, yes, I spent well over 2300 hours in a Disgaea game, taking a super buff network shared base character, adding DLC content onto it, and briefly revived the distribution of said character all in order for me to use them as a means to duplicate said character enough times as to act as bases for every class in the game following a plan I had built several spreadsheets covering. And yes, getting achievements with the Lost in Binding of Isaac prior to holy mantle was an absolute challenge. But, I really can only do so much anymore now. For a while, despite my clumsiness with the spoken word and general social anxiety, I actually considered making a real UA-cam account and starting a sort of antithesis to your channel. One where I try my best to play games blind, and be OK with missing things. Maybe find and support a network of like minded gamers who have truly turned their hobbies of games into (non-profit) work. Been at least 7 years since that thought occured to me, and I'm just as bad as I was then, if not worse. Still want to enjoy video games, but it is more an addiction than a hobby anymore, so really, I couldn't speak as an advocate in the public, having never found that answer myself. So, extremely long winded post behind me, here's a question. Have you ever thought about just playing something blind outside of something you'd consider posting to Beard Bros.? And if you'd already done so, sorry for not checking beforehand.
I remember getting this game with the N64 bundle. I loved this game and that beginning song I found myself humming and singing for months if not years afterwards. I remember playing through it for a second time when my now ex wife told me it reminded her of banjo kazooie which I had never played at that point. Thank you for redoing these games Jirard, I loved the original episodes but I find revisiting old things can give us a new perspective on things. I know I'm getting to this late but I still love that you're doing it. I never completely finished this game. I couldn't do one banana in the desert world. Always meant to go back to it to finish it and never did.
As much hell as this game gets(admittedly for good reason), I love this game. It's one of my all time favorites. No other game brings on more nostalgia for me and to this day I enjoy playing it.
The beauty of such collectathons is in always having something to do, you beat the game but still want to mess around in the world without starting a new game, trying to do it all in a limited time kills it
I've watched this back to back like 4 times. Takes me back to the good ol days. I went crazy over kong 64. Thought I may have been one of the only ones from back in the day that played til I watched this. I gotta dig it out now and replay
If I ever play Donkey Kong 64 for a third time, I am absolutely completing it for a third time. Screw your finish it rating, I will always complete it entirely regardless of how many times I play it. I love every aspect of Donkey Kong 64.
Man I love this game to pieces growing up. As I got older it saddened me to see how much people seemed to dislike it. I always got so much enjoyment how large the worlds were at the time and the collectathon method just made me explore every nook and cranny of the worlds so the collectables were never too much for me. I also loved having to play as five different kongs each with their own abilities and power ups (though why make Tiny and not bring Dixie in for the game?). The bosses are also a lot of fun. The mine-kart sections and barrel blast sections with DK are also so much fun. I also like how you don't have to worry about drowning in the water in this game; say what you will but I think I would have hated Gloomy Galleon if I had to worry about air. My only gripe about the game is the need for those Rareware and Nintendo coins to get the final key to get to the final boss. I could gt the Rareware just fine but I always struggled with the original DK arcade game. I replayed the game in 2009, 10 years after the release of the game, and I was finally able to beat it to get that Nintendo coin and beat the game.
I think the reason why collecting is so great in this world is because the attention to detail in literally ever single aspect which you just can't get enough of. The music is just perfect everywhere. Every character feels unique, even the enemies all are very unique. And every environment is different. And then what I like most is the challenging aspects of the game, because you just know which things are hard and if you beat them you feel great.
Also a way to kill Kasplats easily is to hit them with any attack that knocks them onto their butt, and then if you attack them while they get up they will die instantly once they do get up.
Great vid, Jirard! The green N64 bundle for this game was one of the best Xmas gifts I remember getting as a kid. Fun fact: Grant Kirkhope did the voice for DK, especially the funny groan that always cracks me up while getting shot out of a barrel
This game will always be a treasure to me. But I can’t tell you how crushed I was when during a long awaited replay I only got a golden banana for beating “Donkey Kong.” Realizing I had to do it again for the Nintendo coin just about killed me.
one of my most favourite titles from the N64 era, really miss playing this as a kid. I spent hours on it. Really hope they drop it on the switch online service
Super Mario 64 May have been my first game ever, but to this day DK64 is my favorite collectathon of all time. I love the artstyle, the personality of the writing, how clearing each world feels like solving a puzzle one piece at a time with each character, the atmosphere of each world is so unique with the music, and just the overall game feel. I’ve never 100% completed it but I have played it over and over again. It’s the one game I genuinely want a remake for.
got stuck on this game so many times as a kid. The collecting was brutal. Especially when you enter the fortress. I got lost so many times in there lol
DK rap is still fire and perfectly encapsulates all five Kongs and that’s where a lot of people missed the point of. I remember seeing the commercial prior to seeing Pokémon: The First Movie and my 8, 9 year old self was super stoked.

That "OK" at the beginning was perfect (so much nostalgia from one word lol). Thanks for doing a video on my favorite childhood game!
This is still one of my favorite 3D platformers as well. I would love a remaster/port to the Switch with how well it still holds up.
I got to 101% without exploits in 17:55:22 of total time a few months ago, It was really neat!
Completing this game is a massive chore…but at the same time it’s addicting because I love the world and the Rareware charm.
My favorite game of all time. Absolute gem. Best soudtrack ever.
I see that Donkey Kong Country TV show VHS tape behind your right shoulder!
I must have rented that tape a dozen times as a kid.
Still freakin amazing that so much from this specific game was referenced in Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, and King K. Rool’s moveset in Smash
I completed this game yesterday 101%
I had a lot of fun but I also CURSED certain aspects of the game, I managed to get all the things in one go, only needed to backtrack on Jungle Japes and Angry Aztec for the new Kongs (and Fungi forest for the rabbit race). Save states helped keep my sanity tbh, I hated every second I had to play OG Donkey Kong and Beaver Bother...
I did not know Toga Jirard was something I needed in my life 🙏
Ngl I get Buda vibes from that image.
I love your gruff "okay" in the beginning haha. Great job as always man. Huge fan
Jirard is a video game warrior! A monk, he has ascended this realm and is actually pixelated but very, very high resolution
DUDE. I gotta play this game again. I don’t know how long it’s been but The first bit of music that played from the game brought such a calming wave of nostalgia and I’ll never not think of it till I play it again lol
My favorite game of all time, this is an episode I’ll be rewatching over and over.
"Yellow means 'go', green means 'whoa, slow down', and red means 'where the heck did you get that banana?'"
24:12 Correction: 3500 bananas, not 3200 (100 bananas per Kong per level × 5 Kongs × 7 levels).
One of my favorite games of all time, new to the show and I’ve been dying to hear the review! Love it
I remember getting this game with the N64 bundle.
The beauty of such collectathons is in always having something to do, you beat the game but still want to mess around in the world without starting a new game, trying to do it all in a limited time kills it
Me seeing the Notification: OK!
I've watched this back to back like 4 times. Takes me back to the good ol days. I went crazy over kong 64. Thought I may have been one of the only ones from back in the day that played til I watched this. I gotta dig it out now and replay
Was in the middle of watching his metroid prime video when this came up, love your videos man!
He’s the best dude. Huge plays.
I never got into this game, but I used to watch my friend play it almost every day, and we NEVER skipped the DK Rap. :)
Ah yes, two men (or other gender) of culture
The bits have been getting better lately. I like it.
DONKEY KONG 64 IS MY FAVORITE GAAAAAME! * fangirl squeal *
Jirard, what do you get for all the banana coins?
Great vid, Jirard! The green N64 bundle for this game was one of the best Xmas gifts I remember getting as a kid.
Fun fact: Grant Kirkhope did the voice for DK, especially the funny groan that always cracks me up while getting shot out of a barrel
DK Rap is like an advanced society that we haven't discovered yet
This game will always be a treasure to me. But I can’t tell you how crushed I was when during a long awaited replay I only got a golden banana for beating “Donkey Kong.” Realizing I had to do it again for the Nintendo coin just about killed me.
DK64 is by far in my top two games for the N64. Anytime I feel like pulling out the system, it’s to play this or Paper Mario.
one of my most favourite titles from the N64 era, really miss playing this as a kid. I spent hours on it. Really hope they drop it on the switch online service
That intro is literally me. Been waiting for this one, this is going to be a blast!
This game is both the high and low point of collect-a-thon games. So much to do, too much to do.
I'm glad that you took the time to yell at us, but had the foresight to make a reference out of it with the DK "OK!". Very nice Jirard.
I remember listening to the DK Rap when I was 9 and my mom got mega offended with even the smallest of cuss words being used in it lol.
heaven forbid anyone say the h-word!
just buggin', my family was basically the same. now that I'm older, my parents and I swear in front of each other all the time 🤣🤣
I would love a DK64 remaster and new 3d Donkey Kong game in a similar style
Still get a little scared any time I see dk
Watch the DK show, you'll get nightmares
@@thepenguinboi8679 no, he means on this channel.
@@rolandofeliciano6006 oh right

Jirard has stated on Record that Donkey Kong County 2 will be the final episode of the Completionist.
Some fans do not wish for that day to come.
@@thegreendragon5390 oh yeah I know that. I also don't want that day to come either. Sorry,I just completely misread the comment lol.
Thank god u made a video on this game I love this game it’s my childhood!!
I saw the notification and got so nervous that it was Donkey Kong Country 2.
I thought that too. I was like “no, he would have a “this is the end, let’s talk about it,” right...RIGHT?!?!”
Hearing that overworld music conjures a lot of nostalgia.
Don't think I ever made it past 70% completion, or even beat the final boss. But kids are kids.
Thanks for your hard work Gerard.
Have a banana. They have a lot of potassium for energy.
~AND THEN THERE'S CHUNKY!~
He's dead...
DK! CHUNKYS DEAD!
so happy for this. Glad to see you back
I didn't even get a notification, this is just a blessing from the gods
Great! Well done on those minigames Jirard, but as a child I remember the hardest rare 64 completion being Jet Force Gemini's Jeff and Barry racing game. Get that completion and we'll talk about how badass it is to have finished a rare minigame!
Imagine Jirard trying to do a collectathon of all dog tags In Metal gear solid 2
God thats so many fucking playthroughs
in summary dk64 is great to play but hell to complete
N64 days were the best days of my life
Im so rooting for a remaster or another DK64 like game!! It was truly great.
And then there's Chunky, he's dead
DK Chunkys dead
Man, I love the look backs to see how you've changed over the years.
The multiplayer in this game was pretty fun as well!
One of my favorite games ever. When I was a kid I could only play video games when my brothers friends brought his N64 over. When they played DK64 we would do the Monkey Smash 4player. It was so much fun and a lot of great memories with this game. The music is amazing of course. Aghhh I love this game. Thanks for the new review.
Cranky was actually auditioning for the Gamecube, there is a dolphin in the scene
I picked this game up for the hell of it years and years ago, didn’t quite get into it, and then heard that it was pretty widely disliked. So it’s been collecting dust ever since. But now after seeing this new perspective, I think I’m actually gonna restart it. Thanks Jirard!
Donkey Kong 64 has the greatest song known to man
The DK RAP
Was the intro a callback to the Mario Allstars pack ? That gag was my favorite from the old show and what got me hooked before I got to "know" you. The "but beardman" joke was charming and fun but I'm glad to have grown with the channel and see you're still doing the content you did in new and exciting ways. You guys rock.
Maybe I’m biased because this was my favorite game throughout all of my childhood and it’s still up there now, but there is no game that deserves an hd remake more than this one. Why did Microsoft buy Rare 😖
hopefully one day I get to see your collection in person!!! it looks amazing!!!
The only thing that has ever prevented me from entirely completing this game is the Beaver Bother bonus game. -__-
"Only a *Tiny* fraction is needed to progress." I see what you did there, my good man.
