Late reply but I agree. All the characters we grew up with seem 100 percent badass when you are able to say you've had the chance to experience a series as a whole.
I played this once when I was around 10 years old while I was visiting a friend of the family. The moment you leave the forest and enter Hyrule Field gave me chills, and I KNEW, I had to play this game. I legit went out and bought a N64 with my own money just to do so. So it has a special place in my heart for sure.
I recently replayed the original with my son. It was his first time seeing the game, and he LOVED it. He still asks me lore questions months later. I have often asked myself about why this game is so good. Yes, it's well designed and well paced. It's an addition to the list of smash successes by Nintendo in early 3D game design. The graphics at the time were eye-popping. It was one of the first games that I played that made me feel like I was whisked away to an adventure in a real place; a place I could freely explore and exist in on my own terms (sort of). But I think what really strikes at the core of how the game impacted us as people is the timeless journey from boyhood to manhood. I recently made this connection reading a book regarding male psychology. Link begins as a child in the forest, under the father figure of the Deku Tree. He's the kid that's different; the one without a fairy. We all see ourselves as different in some way from those around us. The father figure Deku Tree summons Link and initiates him on a journey, not just to save Hyrule, but to find his strength and courage. He doesn't just verbally call him to this journey. Link has to pass a test of courage by slaying the monster within the Deku Tree. This initiation was Link's initiation into manhood by the primary father figure in his life, probably the most pivotal events in any boy's life, and sadly one that many young boys don't get to experience by no fault of their own. Link now has a battle to fight, an adventure to live, and once he forms his relationship with Zelda, he'll have his beauty to rescue. These are the fundamental pursuits of a man's heart, and the core of Link's character development. This journey of growing up and initiation into manhood involves Link literally growing up in front of our own eyes. It's not just perceived in his growth of powers and abilities; he BECOMES A MAN. Once a man, he is largely on his own. He's left with the guidance of his childhood mentors, motivated by the battle to fight, the adventure to live, and the beauty to rescue. As men, we all deeply want to know we have what it takes to slay the dragon. Link has that confidence, which makes him such an attractive character. It's this initiation into manhood that all boys long for, and it is a fundamental truth since the dawn of humanity. That's what makes Ocarina of Time so timeless, that literally any young boy can identify with Link on a deep, primal level. Nearly all Zelda games share this characteristic, but none struck the nail on the head quite like Ocarina of Time.

Yeah 73 doesnt make sense.. 72 would make sense, as there are 36 heart pieces to collect in the game, and double that cause he played Master quest, so 72 would, but 73, well no, not unless he got an extra heart piece through a glitch, which there are a couple in OOT.
There is an extra one I heard about in an area you're not intended to access. Perhaps the developers forgot to remove it after deciding to not finish the area. Odd they would leave it in if they redid the whole game for the 3ds though.
@@numberone2836 Yes as a child in the gerudo fortress, there is a heart piece in the area above where you get thrown into as an adult if you get caught, it wasnt removed in the 3ds version either. But you cant get there without using glitches or cheats.
will you do everything else or just do the story? because one funnily only has to collect 3 heartpieces in the entire game to have done all major sidequests
That part about growing up in the game and how some of us have grown got me in the feels haha I remember being 13 playing the original cut to 20 years later and the 3DS still has all the charm and class the original carried, it loads of fun to play again, great video Jirad 👊
Great work Jirard :) as always you’ve got an insightful view on games, via your completionist perspective. Personally I’ve never felt that heart containers were lackluster until the last 2-3. All the ones before felt earned and like steps on a long hike, until you hit the wall on THAT LAST MINIGAME. Lookin’ at you Twilight Princess. Great work as always, and Hello to whomever is reading this
Me: *Just finished this game again today* Jirard: *uploads a Completionist video on this game the same day* Why Jirard, what excellent timing you have. Edit: I was actually playing the original N64 version
"I'm hard pressed to think of a video game with a fishing minigame that's fun." Meanwhile, Three Houses fans be like "wtf, this is a strategy game? I'm here for the fishing."
High Definition my thing with MM was that yes the atmosphere and the game itself is a masterpiece, i just wasnt a fan of only 4 dungeons and the time mechanic
FBI D graphics dont make a game for me, if that was the case then vagrant story, ffvii, and metal gear solid which ALL look worse than any zelda game, wouldnt be my favorite games. Some of yall kids focus on graphics way too much, yall forget that theres other more important aspects of a video game
Humza Khan really? I’m saying just that. I should have put in that the 3ds version is better by a long shot. Their is no way the original is better. I’m just saying, by the time the game is done with, the graphic look unappealing. And if their unappealing, people would not want to play it, the game is amazing however playing the 3ds version will give you the better version of it. The graphics don’t matter. However you have the draw the line and at this point it’s looks like puke... link to the past is older then oot and look just as great as ever. In fact, I like link to the past more then this because of several reasons, like waiting and how the spirit of the games is. And also the text speed. It’s horrible.
Great video, i think you guys nailed this game right on the head! I complete this game once a year because I'm one of those people who considers this game to be one of the best ever made and it has consistently brought me enjoyment. but i agree that completing this game 100% isn't as quite as good as it could be and i would recommend most people just finish the game however they want as well. For me though, completing this game is one of the most fulfilling things I do every year now and it always lights a warm fire in my heart. Also, shout-outs to the weekend warriors for playing this game!
Jirard, I loved the look of this show. I love how you incorporated the game menus into the format of the episode. That was an awesome touch. OoT is my favorite game of all time, and you're my favorite UA-camr of all time. Thank you, Jirard for being awesome, and thank you to the entire ToVG crew! ♥️
Thank you so much for making this! I was in the dark about the 3ds re-master and couldn't remember exactly what masterquest was about because I last played OOT back in the late cretacious. The horseback archery challenge at Gerudo's Fortress was absolutely ball-busting to defeat!
It feels good to share the experience of this game with all of you, it truly was my first taste of magic and freedom, of a scary new world full of dangers, the metaphor for childhood innocence is truly heartbreaking
Well, there's also that 37th Heart Piece in the Gerudo Fortress as a child. But that requires a good amount of tricks and glitches to do, in order to get it.
The changes the made to this game definitely helped me grow up because I was young and games had a bigger impact of me! So not only seeing a 3D game, but one that made me think like Zelda.... It was a life-changer!
This is like my second time watching this video mostly because I just really enjoy the legend of Zelda content in general but I mostly enjoy your very moving words about the literal and metaphorical messages and themes of growing up that are found in this game. Thanks for hitting me in the nostalgic feels @ThatOneVideoGamer
Having been born in 1987, every Zelda release up to Majoras Mask was basically a life milestone it seems. From my first experience watching my Dad and Uncle playing the original (which also happens to be my second earliest life memory) to beating LTTP all on my own with my Dad proudly watching. Then came Oot came out. Looking back now I feel like it really resonated with me in how I was at a time in my young life when the real world was just starting to open up, and I feel it reflected in that game with the jump to a (for then) massive open 3d world. I loved spending evenings exploring every bit of it after a full day of doing the same in the real world around where I lived. And then, (almost eerily...) MM came out as I was just starting middle school, a point where I felt that everything around me felt so strange yet familiar. Like most of my old friends were still around, but many dynamics were changing/changed. There was a lot of sadness for me at the time also due to my parents divorce, and MM mirrored a lot of those feelings to me. After that I didn’t get a GameCube until it was already on its way out, and while I love WW dearly, it didn’t really reverberate with me like the others had and was actually the last Zelda game I played to the end, sadly. Anyways sorry for the worlds longest UA-cam comment, but it was nice to reflect for me, thanks for reading. Ps I would so hug the crap out of Miyamoto right now!
This was nice, a good review with a nice rundown of the differences and history. And as always some thoughtful reflections on your experience, which really brings it all to life. I will say I do like a bit more clarity between sections, what you're focusing on discussing; this seemed to blend it together, not bad itself, but... maybe I liked the sense of progression? ^_^ But I hope you're not dealing with too much pressure, because you doing you is almost certainly going to give everyone the best experience. Thanks for all the hard work you and the team put in!
One thing I never see anyone mentioning is how OoT was so groundbreaking with its dedicated context-sensitive action button. That was a MASSIVE game-changer. It annoys me how nowadays everything is an onscreen HUD prompt, it was neat seeing the A button flip over and show us a different text label
It's in my Top 3 for sure. It keeps flipping between Majora, Twilight Princess, and Breath of the Wild for my Top spot. With A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening at 4th and 5th.
Hi I just started getting in to your content, listened to the message at the end of this video and decided to take the time to tell you that I think you're one of the best UA-cam channels I've ever seen. I've never praised a channel in the comments before lol.
I felt masterquest was a treat for all us fans. I think the extra content is the completionist reward. I do think this is my favorite video you've done. Love it but love the masterquest more than you do! Terrific retrospective!
This will always be my favorite game and the best game of all time for me. A lot of that is because I was around 7-8 when this came out. Being able to explore the world - a real, open world full of interesting characters. The story and relationships, the sense of adventure and the gravity of saving the world. So awesome!
I was 12 years old and my brother was 11 when we first played this game. It really WAS a growing experience in my life. We beat games so fast that our parents bought this hoping it would take us longer to beat so we wouldn't bug them for a new game. One of my fondest memories of my childhood was waking up before everyone else, turning on our N64, turning the volume way down as to not wake anyone up and then waking up my brother to take turns playing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. There was no internet so figuring out the puzzles, dungeons and finding the collectables really made us change how we appreciate video games. It really cemented our love for all video games. Good, bad, silly, scary and everything in between. I really couldn't imagine my life without video games. I'm 31 now and I'm forever going to be a gamer
I grew up w/ the original, bought every rendition as the years went by, and have loved every struggle to complete it time and again. That being said, this episode was a fair, critical analysis from a true fan. I learned new things about certain sections of the 3D version and it's because I clicked on this video! Egoraptor proved he never learned how to block w/ the sheild and straight up ignored signs and NPC hints thanks to his impatience and stupidity. He still hasn't finished MM on Game Grumps, b/c of these same issues. Thank you for giving this game the time and attention OoT deserves and for not being an Arin Hanson.
I played this game with my mom once. She thought she could play games like this because she was just getting used to more than one "fire button." She'd play Link to the past rather well. I thought Zelda was a good starter for her because you didn't need fast reflexes like Mario games. Ocarina of Time was also easier for her due to the "Z targeting." She didn't like having to fuss with the camera targeting made that much better. Playing the remake on 3DS was bittersweet, I lost both my parents in 2017 I didn't get a 3DS until much later. I did enjoy that game along with Majora's Mask. Just wasn't the same. What I wouldn't give to getting on the couch with mom and dad after ordering a Pizza. Popping in the N64 cart and playing these games. I can still hear the "ohhhh" from my parents when I first jumped from the top of the Deku tree to break the spider web at the bottom. I miss those days, but got to keep going forward.
Me: Oh, ocarina isn't that bad right? Gotta be a walk in the park after some of the other games this guy's completed Skulltulas: Rustle rustle rustle Me: :O
I like the integration of the game into the roundup at the end similar to how youre doing it on your main show! The format you have goin for your shows is fantastic, and its always a treat to watch these. Youre doing fine, lad, keep up the good work! :>

@@numberone2836 Yes as a child in the gerudo fortress, there is a heart piece in the area above where you get thrown into as an adult if you get caught, it wasnt removed in the 3ds version either. But you cant get there without using glitches or cheats.
Best unique shoot-em-up for PS1... Einhander by Square... please Jirard you’ve got to treat yourself to this lost masterpiece! Much love brother.
I have completed this game so many times, one of my favorite together with a link to the past
I absolutely adore Ocarina of Time. All it takes is for me to hear the opening music and I just relax.
I love finding heart pieces lol it’s one of my favorite items to find in Zelda games
Love your narration on these bro - enthusiatic and varied without a drop of cringe - and awesome, thought-out reviews
What is cringe?
9:41 Thanks for reminding me to avoid those Heart pieces like heck when I'm gonna be streaming a 3 Heart Run of this game soon!
will you do everything else or just do the story? because one funnily only has to collect 3 heartpieces in the entire game to have done all major sidequests
That part about growing up in the game and how some of us have grown got me in the feels haha I remember being 13 playing the original cut to 20 years later and the 3DS still has all the charm and class the original carried, it loads of fun to play again, great video Jirad 👊
Fishing was one of my favorite parts of ocarina of time
Great work Jirard :) as always you’ve got an insightful view on games, via your completionist perspective.
Personally I’ve never felt that heart containers were lackluster until the last 2-3. All the ones before felt earned and like steps on a long hike, until you hit the wall on THAT LAST MINIGAME. Lookin’ at you Twilight Princess.
Great work as always, and Hello to whomever is reading this
Me: *Just finished this game again today*
Jirard: *uploads a Completionist video on this game the same day*
Why Jirard, what excellent timing you have.
Edit: I was actually playing the original N64 version
Perfect timing! Just started replaying this for the first time in 10 years
"I'm hard pressed to think of a video game with a fishing minigame that's fun."
Meanwhile, Three Houses fans be like "wtf, this is a strategy game? I'm here for the fishing."
Don’t forget wii play
Fishing minigame, im in
The edit at 16:07 is absolutely godlike. Really nice work. I thought this episode flowed exceptionally well. Great pace.
You know, i didnt even grow up with this game, i actually played it after played MM, TP, and WW and OoT is my favorite zelda game.
High Definition my thing with MM was that yes the atmosphere and the game itself is a masterpiece, i just wasnt a fan of only 4 dungeons and the time mechanic
Humza Khan I really like the game, however the graphics, for the n64, aged Horribly.
FBI D graphics dont make a game for me, if that was the case then vagrant story, ffvii, and metal gear solid which ALL look worse than any zelda game, wouldnt be my favorite games. Some of yall kids focus on graphics way too much, yall forget that theres other more important aspects of a video game
FBI D and then play the 3ds version if you’re complaining about graphics
The best version of this game is Kaze Emanuar's *_Ocarina of Toad_*
NOT EVEN A 2 MINUTE TIME GAP? FROM MM2 TO ZELDA? 4 times today Chris, godamn it
BUP!
I think this format for a game as well known as OoT is really great! I don't know if it'd be as effective for lesser-known games. Awesome video!
You still have Moonwalker hashtags on this video. (Update: You fixed it!)
I was always a game since a young age but at 11 years old I played this game and solidified my hobby for life. Thank you
OMG THANK YOU FOR RELEADING THIS IVE BEEN WAITING FOREVER FOR THIS
Jirard, I loved the look of this show. I love how you incorporated the game menus into the format of the episode. That was an awesome touch. OoT is my favorite game of all time, and you're my favorite UA-camr of all time. Thank you, Jirard for being awesome, and thank you to the entire ToVG crew! ♥️
it took me 3 weeks to beat this game, but for me, that was like 3 years
Thank you so much for making this! I was in the dark about the 3ds re-master and couldn't remember exactly what masterquest was about because I last played OOT back in the late cretacious.
The horseback archery challenge at Gerudo's Fortress was absolutely ball-busting to defeat!
man it was the 3ds version that made me love this game
I understand this fully :)
It feels good to share the experience of this game with all of you, it truly was my first taste of magic and freedom, of a scary new world full of dangers, the metaphor for childhood innocence is truly heartbreaking
OoT is the first game I fell in love with. It's my second favorite game ever (only topped by Majora's Mask).
The 3D versions are f-ing trash tho :3
Oh gosh the gyro tech is such an insane step forward for aiming. Oh my this game is so good
73 Heart Pieces? There's only 36 in the entire games! Even considering the MQ run, that only doubles it to 72 Heart Pieces.
Well, there's also that 37th Heart Piece in the Gerudo Fortress as a child. But that requires a good amount of tricks and glitches to do, in order to get it.
@@byronlyons3548 and even then why did he only get it once, was it removed in MQ
@@megarotom1590 Not quite, as I probably can guess he either miscounted, or forgotten about it.
I thought the same thing. I'm assuming it was a typo in the script and he didn't notice he was saying an odd number.
Dsehro
I almost started crying when you were talking about growing up. Got nostalgia bombed today.
Did anyone else notice that the thumbnail for this video got updated?
The changes the made to this game definitely helped me grow up because I was young and games had a bigger impact of me! So not only seeing a 3D game, but one that made me think like Zelda.... It was a life-changer!
11:34 speak for yourself . i love the fishing minigame!
This was a good episode. I was excited to see you covering OoT 3D, and feel like you nailed exactly how I feel about it.
Yes bro, I ve been waiting for this plus
Favorite of all time
Whoooooo
Still waiting for ff7 plus
I played it as a child over and over again on GameCube and when this came out I played it and fell in love with the game again.
I got Link's awakening ad for this video 🤔
I disagree, the heart pieces are so fun to find and i love getting then every play through
This was nice, a good review with a nice rundown of the differences and history. And as always some thoughtful reflections on your experience, which really brings it all to life.
I will say I do like a bit more clarity between sections, what you're focusing on discussing; this seemed to blend it together, not bad itself, but... maybe I liked the sense of progression? ^_^
But I hope you're not dealing with too much pressure, because you doing you is almost certainly going to give everyone the best experience.
Thanks for all the hard work you and the team put in!
I didn't know the song playing in the intro came from this so i keep hearing "I have so many drugs, many drugs just for you." ... Caleb City is tight.
Wow so poetic when talking about OoT and where stands after all these years
One thing I never see anyone mentioning is how OoT was so groundbreaking with its dedicated context-sensitive action button. That was a MASSIVE game-changer. It annoys me how nowadays everything is an onscreen HUD prompt, it was neat seeing the A button flip over and show us a different text label
Majora's Mask was the best Zelda ever and I will die on this hill!
It's in my Top 3 for sure. It keeps flipping between Majora, Twilight Princess, and Breath of the Wild for my Top spot. With A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening at 4th and 5th.
Only 4 dungeons and the boss battles were lame
@@RAWvideos95 4 dungeons isn't a good argument if they have good quality, Breath of The Wild on the other way...
Hi I just started getting in to your content, listened to the message at the end of this video and decided to take the time to tell you that I think you're one of the best UA-cam channels I've ever seen. I've never praised a channel in the comments before lol.
Dude needs to try breath of fire 3 if he's not come across a decent fishing minigame.
Props to dark cloud 2 as well.
I felt masterquest was a treat for all us fans. I think the extra content is the completionist reward. I do think this is my favorite video you've done. Love it but love the masterquest more than you do! Terrific retrospective!
We need that OoT HD remake on the Switch along with MM and WW, the big N should just give us a Trilogy
I really like the new format. The video essay style is nice and more flexible to fit the game your reviewing.
"I'm hard pressed to think of a fishing minigame I actually find fun" Then you need to complete Breath of Fire III.
Froggy?
Oh my god it's the legend himself ((intense applause))
“The fishing mini game takes the cake when it comes to the lack of fun”
Big the cat: *laughs in sh**#tty** gameplay*
*nervously sweats in enjoying the fishing game*
This will always be my favorite game and the best game of all time for me. A lot of that is because I was around 7-8 when this came out. Being able to explore the world - a real, open world full of interesting characters. The story and relationships, the sense of adventure and the gravity of saving the world. So awesome!
Jirard: Ocarina of Time is great!
*Egoraptor wants to know your location*
(no offense, still a great video)
Jirard please review the Megaman Zero and ZX series.
I loved the megaman zero games
When the collection comes out would be the perfect time to do so.
@@GamerFromJump I did send him one of my doubles of Megaman ZX about 2 years ago with a challenge to complete it.
If you ask my he should finish Breath of Fire series. Those are amazing jRPG's, what are almost forgotten by the people.
The reverence is appropriate. We all feel the excitement you felt when you dove back in. What a story... This is so many peoples childhood.
i can't wait till it comes out for the switch and he has to make a New New Game Plus
Thank you for giving this game the time and attention OoT deserves and for not being an Arin Hanson.
thing is,majoras mask actually requires a brain because it is structured as one huge planningarea and puzzlebox combined
It's time for the Dark Souls New Game Plus episode.
I'm waiting for the Skyrim one. He'll lose his mind again for the tedium.
Am I glitched or am I seeing the “Michael Jackson: Moonwalker” tags on the video?
Great episode! I remember finishing this game with my friends back when I was 9 or 10. Amazing memories.
The 3D version of oot was the first game I 100% completed. God I hate golden skulltulas.
Me: Oh, ocarina isn't that bad right? Gotta be a walk in the park after some of the other games this guy's completed
Skulltulas: Rustle rustle rustle
Me: :O
Congrats! You never forget your first.
I like the integration of the game into the roundup at the end similar to how youre doing it on your main show! The format you have goin for your shows is fantastic, and its always a treat to watch these. Youre doing fine, lad, keep up the good work! :>
