Collecting stuff is fine. It's the amount of work it takes becomes tedious. Yes, even in Ubisoft games.
The main issue was running into a collectable, being unable to collect it... So you run to a switch barrel, run back, and then collect it... Only to find a new blockage/collectable that requires switching.
Tbh I recently played the DK64 with the Kong swap mod, and it's actually really enjoyable.
So it is less about the collectables and more about the backtracking.

Well, there is more nuance to the discussion than that. It needs to be fun to actually collect the collectibles.
What baffles me is that people lambast Donkey Kong 64 and then praise Super Mario Odyssey as if the latter actually has fun collectibles to obtain. (a few are, but 90% are legitimately just sitting in the open, require you to sit next to someone, require you to kick a rock, or some other mundane task that gets obfuscated by the game's fun basic movement mechanics)

Having to interrupt gameplay to find a barrel to switch from DK to Diddy to collect red bananas even though they're right in front of the player gets annoying real fast. It's fine to have those colored nanners as a suggestion for what character I should use in the area, especially taking in consideration their moveset and abilities, but DK64 forces your hand to play a certain way instead of getting experimental. It doesn't let the player make own mistakes playing the wrong kong, nor does it have a rewarding feeling when you do overcome the challenge you placed upon yourself. That's why DK64 is hated.

What a lot of people fail to remember is this game was released at a time where most people didn’t have many games. You could sink dozens if hours into this, and while there are some VERY frustrating parts, you don’t have to complete them. I completed the game for the first time with just enough bananas to get into hideout helm. For a kid, a game this bit was mind blowing, and it’s still impressive today. Maybe we just shouldn’t be trying to speedrun to 101% completion.

Once you had fully expanded your inventory, there's nothing else that the Korok Seeds are used for. Get the rest of them if you want, but it's not productive.
Same idea here. Not every colored banana, golden banana, or banana coin is necessary to get all you need from the game. They're overstocked on purpose to make it so you don't /have/ to get everything to beat the game.

I've also always thought the statement that this "killed 3d platformers" was so stupid when Rare literally released 2 more 3D platformers on the n64 after this and in the next generation of consoles you couldn't walk two steps without seeing a 3d platformer with the only thing that changed was there were less collectables and the only reason for that is because DK 64 had 5 fully playable characters that weren't restricted to a small section of the game.

He let out a whimper and bounced then all frustration gone into laughter!
There’s just so much charm, for instance, watching each Kongs idol, animation, or walking very slowly with lanky Kong with his arms up in the air 😂 I love this game. Oh no this game is really hated by the community it's got the singular problem of having to switch characters constantly to activate stuff which means you're going through each room up to five times oftentimes less than that it's usually around three
And there's just too many collectibles each world has 100 bananas for each of the five kongs so that's 500 in each world and the problem is is that these bananas can only be collected if you're that correct Monkey so lot of backtracking
then there's 10 golden bananas for each monkey for 50 in each world And unfortunately because there's so many of these the actual act of acquiring the golden bananas is often times repetitive as you'll often times enter a bonus game barrel for one but there's only like 5 or 6 different mini games so they keep getting replayed and quite a few of them are just not good particularly the fly swatting the sled race and the worst one of all the very glitchy beaver hurting where you try to get them into a hole however they don't want to go in the hole it's glitched where they'll just kind of cling to the side nobody has ever figured out a consistent way to get them into the hole every time so a lot of trial and error
Ohh and then of course there's coins for each kong to purchase moves and weapons there's one blueprint for each monkey in each world
And unfortunately the first two worlds cannot be 100 percented on your first time through scents you get the final two monkeys in the third world which means you have to backtrack to those worlds
there's actually a mod for this game that fans created that let's you switch monkeys at any point oh I forgot to mention also that you can only switch monkeys usually at certain designated points but moderates made it so you can just change them at any time which makes the game so much more fun

@@psycholuigiman There's a few flaws in your argument
First stop this game should be compared to if contemporaries which include banjo kazooie its sequel And mario 64 All of these games which are fun to 100 percent
second and the most important flaw in your argument is that it's not the amount of collectibles people have a problem with it's the fact that you constantly have to keep switching characters to get these collectibles
It's fundamentally unsatisfying to have to constantly switch characters for no other reason than to walk the same hallway 3 times because that hallway contains three different colors of bananas or two different colors of bananas and a golden banana for a 3rd
3rd Flaw In your argument is accusing everyone's Response to this game is Making the assumption that everyone's complained through this coffee to you and pasted from each other no they're not they're just all noticing the same flaws
fourth lies in terms of the 100 percenting the game In that it would require either looking up a walkthrough or multiple playthroughs to even know how much you need to grab To beat the game And since people are not going to want to keep running back to worlds to grab more stop it they're short they're going to grab as much as they can on the first run through
And quite frankly collective Dawn games have almost always been most enjoyable at 100% in them it's not like skyrim Or a grand theft auto where 100 percenting a a game is completely optional and expected to be more of a chore to pat out the game the whole point of a collectathon is to collect and if collecting is not fun then why are you playing the game and since collecting is the point of the game it should be fundamentally fun to collect and thus to 100 percent complete

    • @psycholuigiman
      @psycholuigiman 6 днів тому +4

@@yami122 Basically all your points fall apart because, like Skyrim and Grand Theft Auto, getting 100% completion is optional in this game too.
Wanna compare it to its contemporaries? Okay. You don't really have to 100% complete those games either, and in fact, lots of people play them that way and love them all the same. Somehow, DK64 though has this expectation that you'll be 100%ing it, even though that's so far from what you need to do to have fun.
It's irritating to have to travel through the hallways three to five times to get everything. . . so just don't. All that's in those hallways are stray bananas and you don't need them all to get the banana medals. Not to say it's NEVER a problem. As this video so perfectly pointed out that sometimes they have those crappy hallways that require two characters to even get through. Fact is though, those kinds of rooms are kinda uncommon.
There's noticing the same flaws, and then there's having the exact same reaction to those flaws. That's what gives me the impression of folks just parroting what other people have said. Why, one of my best friends once said all the exact same complaints you stated. One problem. This particular friend hardly ever goes for 100% on any platformer game. It's not a genre he's super fond of, so he just plays until it's not fun, or until he beats the game. So why would he care that this game is hard to 100%? Because somebody told him to care about that. Sadly, that's how a lot of people operate, you know. They listen to folks they deem to be of higher standing than them. I can understand speedrunners or true completionist types having their issues. Statistically speaking though, those people are not the majority, so it makes very little sense for their concerns to apply to the general gaming audience.
Lastly, don't wanna use a walkthrough? Okay, just don't use a walkthrough. Don't bother with 100%.
So you see, almost all grievances are easily resolved by simply not playing the game like a tryhard. Relax and have fun with it. Don't treat it like a school project. I get hat it's fun to do that for some games. Nothing gives a dopamine rush quite like seeing a checklist with all the boxes checked off thanks to your efforts. At the end of the day though, not all games are meant for that, like you pointed out. If you were playing Skyrim and hated the game cuz it's a pain to complete 100%, everybody would say that's on you. I'm just saying to extend that same courtesy to other games, even when out first instinct tells us not to extend that courtesy.

I think dk64 is an interesting case study for how far the “polish” of a game can carry mediocre gameplay. Working through something like my 7th 100% run of the game this summer, and I can honestly say I’ve enjoyed every minute I’ve spent with this game over the years. The task of collecting things is tedious, but for me this is weirdly a part of the appeal. I don’t have to expend brain power on complex puzzles or combat, leaving more of my awareness dedicated to just enjoying the immaculate sound design, music, lighting, and vibes that the game has to offer.

My main problem with this game besides how janky it is sometimes and how repetitive it gets it's precisely that. They tried to do too much at the expense of the quality.
Banjo Tooie instead did the opposite and it's a far better game with each Jiggy feeling far more unique and fun, with better bosses and harder overall.
DK64 has 5 characters, first problem. Instead of that they should've gone for only 2, DK and Diddy (maybe 3 with Dixie, but I hate Dixie was replaced with Tiny). That gives each Kong 5 golden bananas per world, and allow the game to have far better quality.
With that said, each Kong should have had a mine cart adventure, a barrel blast adventure and a mini boss adventure in every world, to make the game have more traditional DK stuff.
Then the bosses could've been turned between DK and Diddy to end with the final boss having phases chaning along those 2 as well.
This also would allow DK to be the MAIN CHARACTER as he is supposed to be but the game fails so miserably to do. He has the worst moveset, the worst bananas, he is literally the tutorial character. DK should have the super punch attack! not Chunky! He should be the one to become huge!! not Chunky! (I think I made my point)
The game should have focused on the quality of the stuff over the quantity and would've been far better.
That said... it's a 6/10 for me because it's part of my childhood and I love the music

The game is fun, despite some tedious and annoying flaws, that doesn't mean that the game as whole is bad 🙄

DK64 for me also holds a strong sentimental value and holds a lot of nostalgia as the first console game I ever played. for me, it was a game which helped me open my eyes to the possibilities of gaming and acted as a means of escape from less than ideal situations from my early childhood, something that wasn’t all that great. What I remember most was the hours I’d spend getting lost in DK64’s worlds and taking it all in, being fascinated of the places the game took me. I will be the first one to admit and acknowledge that DK64 hasn’t aged the most gracefully, and as you alluded to, there are some mini games which would prompt a controller being thrown. But that to me doesn’t detract from the overall experience and simply made me realize those particular golden bananas weren’t worth it. I played it again some years back, in my high school/early college days, and as I did, I was taken back, back to that time of my early childhood, experiencing the game and all its worlds again and that escape, and even in knowing how it didn’t age with grace, I walked away feeling like I genuinely had fun. The only thing I find frustrating these days is that this game is not on NSO still, and that bothers me to no end Nintendo for some reason continues to hold it back, even as three years have passed since the expansion pack tier debuted and brought N64 titles. I truly wish Nintendo would get a grip and just drop DK64 already, it’s a gem imo and I’d recommend anyone to at least give it a try.

Yeah some of the bonus barrel mini games are about as fun as shoving shards of glass in your eyes and at some point the controls are frustrating due to weird camera angels.
But the main gameplay loop is amazing. Adventuring through creative and lively worlds searching through every nook and cranny to find every possible secret all while planning ahead which kong you should explore with first and when you should switch.
And don’t even get me started on the art-style, atmospheres, music and character personalities. This game oozes with charm unlike anything else.

Metroidvainas never get grief about it. it is a core design of Dk64, going back to areas with new kongs or abilities to unlock more stuff.

Banjo Kazooie in particular Required almost all of its puzzle pieces and notes To really beat the game Sure the hardest door and puzzle to complete are technically optional but you need that double health to beat the boss unless you have God like skills
you can miss two Jigsaw pieces and about 20 or 40 notes
And because of that most people are going to automatically assume that there's a similar reason to collect the things in Bandra Kazooie

I've been playing DK64 and I've loved it for a long time. As a programmer, I want to eventually create a spiritual successor with different characters (e.g. a hedgehog knight and badger thief). The low points of the game were definitely a problem for almost everyone, and I hope to fix them with my spiritual successor.

I think the only word of advice I'd have is to not have as many characters. Or find a more creative solution than simply swapping characters on the fly (I feel the inevitable follow-up to that is to just give all of those abilities to one character). But I lean the former since DK64's issues likely wouldn't have been so severe if there weren't so many characters all of the collectibles were split across. It probably could've gotten away with three.
Or have five characters but don't make them exclusive to ONE character (i.e. allow Diddy OR Tiny to grab certain golden bananas). Or......... well, anyway. lol

What Rare didn't realize was adding an absurd amount of collectibles actually made this game wonderful as a randomizer mod. Now that you've beaten this game, go play the randomizer. Seriously it never gets old now, even when all that happens is the items and upgrades get shuffled. it's cool to see how much in the late game levels you can still get even without basic early game abilities. And ice traps too lol.

Ended up trading it and keeping the memory upgrade for Majora's Mask and Perfect Dark. Actually good games.
It is widely regarded as one of the worst N64 games ever. Basically the opposite of the OOT legacy. It killed platformer collection games.

@@darkhobo Dude, I played it too and reached the opposite conclusion. I think it's great. The music is fitting, the level design is competent, it pushed the limits of the N64 (as most RARE games did), and it gives you a lot of content to keep you entertained for hours.
I don't understand this "It killed a genre" argument. Super Mario Sunshine was also a platform collector and it came out three years later. The Rachet & Clank series has platform collecting mechanics and it does well. It looks more like platform collecting mechanics are still around and that DEDICATED platform collecting games simply fell out of fashion around the turn of the millennium.

The strong dislike people seem to have for this game has always absolutely baffled me. Especially given how Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie seem to have the complete opposite reputation. Personally, this is easily my favorite of the 3 big N64 collectathon platformers. Aside from Beaver Bother being a buggy sack of dicks, my only real complaint going back to it is that it was maybe a little too ambitious with it's visuals. It seems to have even more framerate issues than most other N64 games, which are already pretty inconsistent most of the time. Maybe playing on an emulator could fix that, but I personally prefer playing on original hardware whenever I can.
Also, it's interesting that you listed Chunky as a favorite. He was always my and my siblings least favorite to play as. Every time I play the game I spend as much time playing as Lanky as I can get away with.
Also also, just throwing this out there while I'm at it: Donkey Kong Country 3 is another game that I think is severely over hated. It also kind of parallels DK 64 in the sense that the current consensus of the game seems to be that it killed the 2D collectathon platformer, which I think is just as ridiculous of a claim. And I don't even have any nostalgia bias for that game.

It had to be a fully functioning, ready to go product right out the gate… It also had to entertain people for a long time to stay relevant. If it was over too quickly, nobody would play it

I find DK64, more than any other game I've played, is a game that needs to be played with the right mindset.
The temptation is to view every collectable as an objective that needs to be completed, and I think this is how most of the people who complain about the game having "too much stuff" are approaching it.
However, I've found that the way to enjoy it is to take a much more laidback approach. Explore the areas, and let finding collectables almost be incidental. Just look around and see what you find!

I specifically got into videogames much harder because I 100% cleared Kingdom Hearts and found that to be a very rewarding and intentional experience. I still know so much about KH1 and I absolutely fall in love with the game over and over every time I play it. Not all games are worth it to 100% that is true but that being said there're games that do lean into you playing the whole content much more naturally than other games. Like saying you'd hate the game because you play it so much should never be said in full confidence especially if you're trying to convince me this was a good game. Some games are a lot better at letting you 100% the game like Banjo because there aren't a lot of arbitrary decisions split between 5 characters. Katamari Damacy also feels fun to try and 100%. There are many games where I would argue you should 100%. Just a weird biased take to be honest.
Like how can you say that in a post Vampire Survivors industry?
