Fly Fishing for Bull Redfish in Southeast Louisiana - Leader, Rod, Reel, Line and Flies!

- I'm sight fishing bull reds in Southeast Louisiana in this video! There's not much as exciting as Fly Fishing for Redfish...they were made for the fly. This trip, I found myself in the marsh with near perfect sight fishing conditions. One flat was staked with big redfish and another held giant black drum. Sneaking around dropping flies from a kayak to cruising and tailing redfish is too much fun. It's hard to explain how exciting sight fishing redfish is but I hope this video shows why I start checking the weather daily when October rolls around. All I need is 2 or 3 days of high sun and low winds and I head south and pole the flats looking for shadows!
Look for more redfish videos as the season starts for me. Including tips and tactics and things I look for when I'm in the marsh.
I walk through my gear, leader and some productive flies near the end of the video.

Really good job for a guy by himself just fishing. Not too much BS on the trip there, shopping for gear, etc... which is just a boring filler in many vlogs. Good clean camera angles that let you see the action. I appreciate your personal skill level without all the fancy boats and guides to do the work for you. That is how most regular guys fish! Actually lots of info in there like paying attention to weather and tide conditions, stealth and quiet presentations, gear made simple. The same stuff I pay attention to in my fishing even though I'm from Alaska. Thanks. I subscribed.
Thanks man, I definitely consider myself just another dude who loves fishing...just me and a gopro sharing what really happens!
You are dialed on the redfish. That was sweet to watch!
Thank u, yea I can't decide if I'd rather live in the mountains or in the marsh!
I like the JJ Watt callout. Wisconsin grad, go Badgers! Those Redfish look fun, can’t wait to target them.
Haha, they are a good time!
You can see them, wow.
Hard to hide in a foot of water...but many ghost wo a sign lol!
December 2022: I really enjoyed seeing you taking advantage of your Jackson Kayak and fly fishing skills. Nice work with the post outing tips. I agree that you have some aggressive targets in the Louisiana marsh. 👍🏻
Great content!! Thanks for keeping the videos music free and sharing some tips at the end.
You bet, just doing what others have commented on...so thanks for the feedback!
Great work buddy
Appreciate it, a great time for sure!
What a fantastic video! Damn awesome catches.
Really appreciate the gear run down at the end. Kinda new to fly fishing and still getting gear together
Lol my wife does the same my friend . Amazing vid 🔥
Haha, thx dude!
Another enjoyable video. Thanks for sharing your technique.
Happy to do it, thank u!
Nice Reds man. Like your setup. Thanks for the breakdown
Thx dude, definitely some of the best fly fishing there is!
Wow that looks like serious fun!!!
It's off the charts fun, no question!
Dude these are my favorite of your videos!! Keep it up
Appreciate it man, that is definitely my plan!
Badass video
Great video. Well done, sir.
Thank u!
Great video as always man. Glad to see you still coming south and hammering the reds.
I'll never stop chasing reds or trout lol!
@@LooknFishy they always leave you wanting to come back for more! I just picked up a new 8 weight... can’t wait for this weather to chill out so I can go put it to work.
@@jayellgee they make me wanna move lol! Yea, I've cancelled 2 trips b/c of the weather. Really hoping it will settle some in the next 4 to 6 weeks!
Almost a year late and awesome! Two personal questions one more important than the other: First, do you eat fish?; second, New Olympic Sport submission...Skilled net-paddling canoe fishing 🎣! You sir, are wicked skillful! 😀
Haha, I like it. Nothing wrong with being late...party is still going! Not much for trout...but absolutley keep reds occassionally!
Man you're making it look easy, great job on the reds and thanks for the tips! I'm going out in the morning here in Charleston for my first reds on fly (hopefully) so this was my motivation
Reds are so much fun. Hope it went well for u!
@@LooknFishy thanks man it did (at least by my standards)! Can't wait to get out there again
Very impressed!
Really enjoyed that video.
Thank u, always have a great time in the marsh!
Well Done! 👍🏻
Thx dude!
Haha I was trying to look in the background to see if I could figure where you were? Leeville / grand isle
Men, that was awesome.
Dude! Do you work? What a life! Didn’t catch the tippet weight you use. Outstanding vid.
Thank u, I keep busy lol! 20lb fluoro
New sub man…..good stuff
That was awesome!!!!’ 👍
It's a killer time!
Great video !!
Appreciate that!
Sweet
Never done this! Would be fun!
Life changing!
they took your kayak for a ride😁
Haha, yea just let them tire themselves down rather than run and reel back lol!
Lol Cajun sleigh ride
Dude great video. Are you fishing mostly incoming tide? Nothing worse than being stuck at low tide. Those are big Red fish. I’ve seen a lot around 5-7lbs but some of those looked really big. Thanks for lines , rigging and flies at the end. Loved the warning about the barb. Anyone who has ever thrown big weighted flies has a few crazy stories about getting hooked on a front cast or fly shooting out of he water back at your face. Cool change of pace in this one. Thanks for the video!
Mostly like a falling tide but an incoming is a close second. Have had to push thru the muck a few times lol. Yea, only takes one hook in the calf to learn to pinch those barbs lol!
I live in eastern NC and have started Kayak fishing last year. All I want it to hook into one redfish with my fly rod.
Wow, first time seeing you fish more local and what agility you have. Standing and paddle Nd fighting and not and movement... I'd be wet for sure.
Was thinking the same thing. I don’t have the athletic skills this man has! Impressive
Haha...get lots of practice!
Great fun. That third one was a lunker. Did you weigh any? Do you track your PB for each species?
No, never weigh or measure my fish. I just enjoy catching them and that's enough for me!
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Right on!
Hey Bud, are those hooks #2 or #2/0... I know you're saying #2, but I want to be sure.
Thanks,
Captain Rick
#2!
Way late to this. Love your vids man. I’ve been all over the globe fly fishing and now my dad lives in LA. I’m doing this trip! , ( I use a SUP) and caught the bug for reds on the fly in North Carolina OBX.
Do you launch kayak from shore or have it towed via boat.
as a redfish newbie who has only ever targeted them in tampa bay 10:40-11:15 blows my mind
Nice fishing video👍. Can you fish them on sight it’s looks likes muddy water?
It's definitely stained but they still show up if you're looking for shadows and contrast. Takes some time to develop an eye for picking them up in the stain but I only sight fish reds...just need high sun and no winds.
Great video, but I have questions. I'm a long time fly fisherman for freshwater fish, bream and white perch (crappie). I never even knew that it was even possible to fly fish for reds! Would you mind sharing your rig and flies that you use? Also time of year would be appreciated! Thank you from Venetian Isles, Nola.
Reds were made for the fly! I actually go thru all that near the end of this vid!
@@LooknFishy Thanks, I'll rewatch your video!
I’ve done this a couple times, (but using a sit-on-top kayak), and when I get to a spot, or hook a fish, I would put a pole through the hole in the kayak so I don’t get pulled around. I was kind of wondering why you don’t do that or choose not to?
I'm in a sit on top also. I have done the same and also used a 5lb dumbbell attached to a retractable dog leash. But moved on to a powerpole which I use now to do the same. Just didn't use it on this day bc it was making a weird noise and spooking fish!
What months of the year do you spend fly fishing for Redfish, Blackdrum, & other saltwater fish?
that a DRO dead head sticker on the truck i see?
It is, was from a fun trip with my buddy who now runs the orvis atlanta shop!
@@LooknFishy nice! i mostly trout fish in NC and im doing some research to catch some reds in Beaufort this october. this is a great video man.
Great video. What is the tippet weight?
20lb fluoro!
For building leaders what are your thoughts on using a triple surgeon’s knot? Too weak?
Yep, I have zero trust in the triple surgeons knot. It has failed on me many times, so I stopped using it like 15 yrs ago!
@@LooknFishy ok, good to know! I haven’t hooked a large fish yet!
What lb fluoro at the end? 20?
Great video! Do you ever feel like the 8 wt is a little light for the big bull reds? I'm going back and forth between getting an 8 wt or 10 wt for Louisiana redfish.
I bring a 9 for days when I see more true bull reds. I'd definitely go up to a 9 or 10 if I targeted them only but the 8 works for a few and all the slots!
@@LooknFishy Thanks! Very helpful!
I fish eastern Louisiana for reds, slightly different environmental conditions in that still sight fishing but almost exclusively marsh grass shores & islands as opposed to where Drew was. I am fishing the shallow duck ponds and shoreline edges out of a 16ft Hewes Redfisher. Fish typically run from 22" to low-mid 30's and can be a bit more wary / spooky. I use a 6wt Sage RPLX with Billy Pate reel and smaller unweighted flies. Some areas have mostly over-slot Reds 28" and up. That Sage 6wt has the backbone to cope with their runs and bulldog power. Biggest Red on that setup was 33". I have a matching 8wt but only take that in the fall for spawning schools in "deep" water.
what paddle is that?
I don’t see them tailing, no head wakes and it isn’t clear water, how are you seeing them?
Fishfinders hahaha jk jk...im sure he can see the shadows in the water from the sun being so high on such a clear day! If you look closely there are some wakes and splashing around that he casts to.
I look for shadows, wakes and listen for the signs of feeding reds. Plus, my copper lenses really help when the sun is high...it'll paint them in the stain. A few were also tailing.
