Doug, and Pat, thank you. You guys are icons in PDX. Saw you back in the day...thanks for the great soulful playing, and for sharing these guitars. Thanks to Bob Stull, as well, for all those years of not only being a great guitarist, but an honest businessman as well! Rock on guys...
Great Shirts Guys !!! Super Classic Looking. 1) Hines 2) 1960 3) Heritage 4) Tokai 5) 1958 I have no reason why I should of guessed any right-I just want that damn t-shirt & a Gary Hines LP...
If it is a Late 70's Tokai it would be a Les Paul Reborn. Love Rock came out in mid 1980 after the short and rare collectible Reborn Old models were phased out (1980-1980.5). So if that is a Love Rock It would be a late 1980 and on...1st digit in the serial will tell you 1 = 1981, 2-1982 etc =)
They all sound great especially thru an old Ac10. I met Pat once or twice Nd let me tell you, between he and Bobby Stahl, they've forgotten more about vintage Les Paul's, than 99% of guitar players will ever know. Great players too. Great videos.. Do more!!!
1- Custom made LP with Seth Lover (bright top end) 2- Tokai (The quieter pups remind me a lot of mine 1980 MIJ Burny LP) 3- Gibson 58 Goldtop (can't forget that sizzling mids and sweet top end) 4- Heritage with WCR (something between the two PAF's guitar as I remembered) 5- Gibson 60 LP sunburst.
Well I watched the answer show and I am not really embarrassed. I did get one right. I actually own a 1983 Tokai Love Rock and a 1994 Heritage with their original pickups. I am going to get a Crossroads pick up tomorrow. Absolutely great show. Proves the late Ed Roman's rant about "vintage" prices. Thanks guys. I am still laughing at myself and everyone else who messed up.
My fav is #1, #2 and #3 are pretty flat sounding, #4 sticks out and #5 sounds somewhere in between all of these... my guessing would be : 58, Tokai, 60ties, Hines, Heritage
Love Tokai`s, i have a Tokai 1979 Les Paul reborn. To my knowledge the love Rock model was not introduced until 1980, first was the Les Paul Reborn then Reborn old, then in 1980 the name changed to Love Rock due to pressure for the big G! So that Tokai has to be a 1980 at the earliest if its a Love rock model. Just FYI. Great show.
I actually changed this on the LPF just after this...but I couldn't change them here. I guessed both vintage guitars but got the Heritage and Tokai reversed.
#1 was a 1958 LP. #2 was the Tokai Love Rock #3 the Heritage #4 was the modern copy of the LP #5 was the 1960. That's my guesses. My favorites in order were #5, #1, #4, #3, then #2. I could be very wrong, but am taking the guess. Now send me my shirt. I am "The Guitar Surgeon" on the web. Thanks, The Guitar Surgeon, a trademarked name.
hi, guys love the comparison. I don't have a guess but I have a quick edit, rotating through all 5 guitars. Every guitar appears at least 3 times in this comp. I wish you would do another one with a close miced amp and maybe even a well recorded DI track. Anyway, here's the comp. search yeti64/mixed-bursts on soundcloud since I can't link here.
Yeah, this isn't the order of how I liked them either. I liked no. 4 the best and that of course might be why I thought that it's the Goldtop... I know how good that one sounds!
OK. On second look, I'm guessing those are the DiMarzio PAFs since they are both creme colored bobbins. Probably 1980/81/82? The a979 had the zebra GOTO PAFs I believe.
Good question! The answer is when we get 20 people who have got two out of the five right we're posting and we're at 14 right now. Bad news, only one guess per person. It'll be worth the wait. Doug and Pat
The first one has the "nasal honk" associated with vintage Burst. The second one is darker, less bite, less airy sound, not vintage in my opinion. The third is real close to the second one, with more top end. The fourth has more of a "nasal honk", but not as much as the first one. The fifth sounds a lot like the fourth. I'd pick the 1 and 4 to be the vintage ones. I'd say the darker one (2) is the heritage. and I don't really know for the others :)
i think the 1st one had this "honk" and weak clean output off all the guitars. whatever guitar it was, it sounded best to my ears reminded the originals.
Hey what pickups do you have in the Tokai? I swapped out the original bridge tokai pickup for a 57 classic? back around 1987. I actually went to a guitar show and the gibson guy gave it to me. Any idea what it might be?
+1800NoFault Although Pat says in the video it would be the Gotoh PAFs I think these rather are DiMarzio PAFs. At least the tone reminds me of my own comparison of bridge pickups I once did on the Tokai forum with my 1981 Tokai LS120 which also included an old Di Marzio and new Tokai PAFs besides others. Posting the serial number would help to identify the exact Love Rock model, but as others have already mentioned, Love Rocks started in 1980. Thanks to Doug and Pat for this very interesting and entertaining show! There probably is no chance to do it again with swapping the same pickup into all guitars, I guess? ;-) And what was the price for the goldtop Gibson three years ago, by the way?
+bluezzbastardzz When we pulled the pickups out of the Tokai it had no identifying marks or stickers or anything on the bottom which might help identify which pickup it was. We're not Tokai experts even though we might act like it, mainly Pat. D&P
+The Doug and Pat Show Thanks for your reply, I had fun watching the show and also reading the related threads on the Mylespaul and LesPaul forums. By the way, does the Tokai have a flamed top? In the video it looks like a plain top to me.
Ok. Here's my 5: 1. Schecter C1 2. LTD ES256 3. Chinese Squire with X2N in the bridge 4. Yamaha Studio Lord 5. Peavey Predator Could confuse 4 and 5, but the others are tits.
To make it more interesting, they should have throw in a "Chibson" a $300 Chinese LP knock off. Or it may be too much at risk since mistaking that imposter for the real thing would be a total devastation of one's musical integrity!
7:04 9:29 11:48 14:29 16:46 Those are "quick links to each sample. makes it easier to navigate.

I'd say #2 and #4 are old Gibsons, #4 is my favorite. #1 reminds me of the old Tokai I once had.
Good question! The answer is when we get 20 people who have got two out of the five right we're posting and we're at 14 right now. Bad news, only one guess per person. It'll be worth the wait. Doug and Pat

This is exactly how I have them ordered, whiich is NOT in order of how I liked them.

I have a dozen of each Gibson and Tokai, Dollar for Dollar Tokai Wins!!
Nothing. (I hope, otherwise theiy price will go up fast on the MIJ market wich I don't want until I have 20 of them).
Hey what pickups do you have in the Tokai? I swapped out the original bridge tokai pickup for a 57 classic? back around 1987. I actually went to a guitar show and the gibson guy gave it to me. Any idea what it might be?

Tokai usually used Gotoh pickups (mostly PAF styled) but not sure about the correct specs and years used
1 - 60 Burst
Ok. Here's my 5:
1. Schecter C1
2. LTD ES256
3. Chinese Squire with X2N in the bridge
4. Yamaha Studio Lord
5. Peavey Predator
Could confuse 4 and 5, but the others are tits.
Honestly they sound enough alike to my ears that I would choose the cheaper one. Does that make me a bad person?
no, it makes you a decent person
hey guys whats the bumper track? Les Paul right? Whats the name?
Thanks.
"How High The Moon".....Les and Mary Ford.
Tokai goes for 150.000?????
It was a joke. They have a very dry sense of humour sometimes.
sigh...............................some get it.
Of course only Canadians pay those kind of prices, but yes.
What model tokai??
It appears to be a Love Rock, that's what it says on the headstock in a Les Paul kind of script. Probably early 80's from what we have heard. D&P
Gently Weeps!!!!!!!! Killer!
sorry....#4 PAF Gold Top
Not easy....
1) Heritage
2) 60
3) Tokai
4) Custom
5) 58
That Tokai is not worth 150K. Way too much. Late 70s Tokai were using DiMarzio's, no?
No. The ls80 didnt. LS100 and up
"worth half as much!" .....150k tokai? ya'll are funny
To make it more interesting, they should have throw in a "Chibson" a $300 Chinese LP knock off. Or it may be too much at risk since mistaking that imposter for the real thing would be a total devastation of one's musical integrity!
i dont think that would happen, or everyone would be playing one, and ive never seen one in person
1960 and Tokai is Better!
Nice Babe I'm Gonna Leave You bit there.
1-58
2-HERT
3-60
4-TOKIA
