Doug and Pat Show on the original Les Paul Standards 1952-1963

- Yeah we know, we've played some LP Standards on other shows but not all of the original series from the very first in 1952 to the last SG style in 1963. We have them all and we play them all back to back sprinkling in all the snappy patter you expect and maybe some you don't. Warning: we did have to use the Magic Sword Canes to go back in time again but we're back now and doing just fine.
2 old dudes playing proper gear and talking about it. I love this. Best UA-cam show idea ever. Watching this while playing my Goldtop and smiling. Keep it up dudes.
We think this pretty much nails what we do and kind of what we've been doing for years except we film it now. Thanks for the comment. D&P
Scundo pretty sure I'm gonna be that old dude who still wears skinny jeans in about 30 years 😂
yeah I can't get enough of watching this show. only just heard of it, should def be more known
@@DFraserHomes From old Dude to Another, Thank You for what you guys do.
A labor of love I'm sure, just the same I thank you both.
I specifically watched this episode because I just purchased a '54 Reissue.
Sight unseen I'm waiting for it to be delivered. I've had many guitars since I started playing back in 1974, this R4 will be my very first P90 instrument! So excited.
Again, Thank You
The more I hear P90's, the more I like them, the break up sounds soooo good, its my tone of choice.
Bro, I never thought I would like P90s and did not care for Goldtops. After searching for conversions and realizing I could buy my original 53 for less money, I bought it. Man, I am so pleased with the tone. They are so clear and can get pretty rowdy when you need them to. I am very happy with them.
I'm happy for you, welcome to the Club!@@jonv5489
@@jonv5489my dream guitar has always been a 56 gold top that had been routed for humbuckers (bc it would lower the price..& bc I like HBs). But as the years go on & the more I hear P90s, the more they grow on me. Nowadays, if I found an old LP w/ a tuneOmatic and P90s, I would take it and leave it as is.
However, being a lefty, I have never seen one turn up that was for sale..and I'm not holding my breath. Hehe. Just think about the lefties bursts... when the only known ones are/were owned by Paul Mccartney and John McEnroe, it kind of tells us what the price tag is on those bad boys. Hehehe. So bursts are out of the question for me. Hehe.
Being a Lefty in the guitar world is challenging, I feel for ya.@@michaelr.4878
Oh my Lord, The 54 goldtop sounds extraordinary.
Awesome tones Doug. Great show guys.
Nope, just a good amp. Look at the end of the video. They plugged em straight into an old vox ac10. Every sonic difference you hear is done with volume and tone controls on the guitars.
I have a modern P90 Gibson goldtop and it sounds more or less *exactly* the same through my Vox. I would argue mine actually has a nicer neck tone by virtue of being monkeyed with (A3/A4 mag combo). Most modern Gibsons with P90's sound like gash because they use short A5 mags in them and it makes the bridge super brittle and harsh, unlike these vintage pickups with their A2 or A3 mags. I'll go one further and state that, in my opinion/experience, there is sod all special about vintage guitars and pickups. They were all machine wound using cheapest/lowest bidder materials. The 'mojo' people get hung up on, in PAF's especially, is just discontinued magnet selection(s), hotter pots, offset coils and microphonics. All can be reproduced with a little effort for considerably less than the asking price of a vintage goldtop..
Not that I wouldn't buy vintage if I could afford too. :)
@@denniskidd but by virtue of what you said it comes down to the guitar because they plugged all the different guitars into the same amp so there for the difference comes down to which guitar he likes the sounds of.
I'm so glad you guys are back with new shows!
Oscar is still one of the best sounding LPs I have ever heard. I am sure Jane is probably a little easier to play with the better frets and the neck may be more comfy, but Oscar has the tone going on IMO. When you strip Oscar down to refin, and swap out all the old electronics, etc., put those pickups in Jane....LOL! Always enjoy the show guys!
Very interesting video to know how becomes the evolution of the les Paul in the wise words and Chords of this Nice two guys..bravo keep on teaching.
Thanks for the plug, guys! Great video! The dark horse for me was the '54, but then I'm a sucker for P90s. And please don't strip Oscar, the man looks good in gold. Keep up the good work! - JM
It was a joke, these guys are not going to strip the gold top !
that first guitar 52 gold top just sounds amazing my favorite, and that sg just wow great thank you for the entertainment and schooling on the changes
Thank you for your great reviews. Had been waiting for a new one for ages :-). This one is outstanding
You are so right guys the Les Paul is the go to classic /heavy/ blues/rock guitar without doubt.
Hello Pat and Doug, I'am very gratefull, your videos are really interresting, especially this one, it's my favorite one. I like a lot vintage stuff, thanks to both of you I can make an idea about gear I won't probably get the chance to use. Thanks guys. Sam (sorry for my poor english^^)
Nice job: well done guys ! To me, the '52 neck pickup sounds best and so does the '56 bridge. Of course Oscar wins it all: what a tremendous Beast, full of overtones and harmonics !! Jayne's not bad either... man I love LP's :) even the SG Std really rocks !
Makes me happy I got me a Murphy lab ‘54 and ‘57. I don’t need no others after watching this lol.
Thanks Doug and Pat.Really enjoyed this segment.Love the tasty playing around the 27min mark👌
Hey guys, I am glad to see your show again. You guys keep it honest about the tones from these guitars. I noticed that you guys want to replace the scratchy pots. There maybe another way to keep the original pots in the guitar and make it sound like new again. I had the same problem with stereo and my 1960s Teisco Del Ray ET-220 guitar. I took my guitar to the shop than they applied DEOXIT spray. No more scratchy pots. I used it on the scratchy controls on a vintage stereo and than no more scratchy sounds and sound cut offs. I tested it with my iPhone and my headphone. It sounded even better with that vintage stereo sound. Please go to the Stewart MacDonald website and look for the pot cleaning cap and the CAIG DeoxIT Pot & Switch Cleaner. I think that this would solve your scratchy pot problems on your Gibson vintage guitars and that way you could keep it original all the way down to the pots. Peace, Flood!
The 58 gold top on the bridge 36:42 FTW.It’s got that special early PAF sound..INCREDIBLE!
Thank you. This vid was fasinating, to hear the evolution of these guitar is a real treat.
Cheers from South Africa. Thanks guys
I could listen to this all day (except during the Vikings football game).☺☺☺
Another great show guys. I'm so lucky to live near Chicago and Chicago music exchange and have had the chance to play early les Paul's. It was amazing to see how crude some of the '52 examples were. I played one with a knot the size of my fist on the back lol. That trapeze bridge really is awful though, but I played one with a wrap over conversion (that fits into the tailpiece) and when they're properly set up they really are cool. The '58 and '59 have still evaded me, but some day I'll play them ;)
"god help you if this gets turned around' ha ha ha great stuff you two!
Despite the wonky bridge, the '52 is still my favorite Goldtop. Just wish I could afford one. Another great demo. Thanks guys.
One of my favorite Les Pauls of all times is Jeff Beck's "Oxblood" which is a refinished 1954 Goldtop fitted with Humbuckers.
The combination of the Humbuckers and the wrap around tail just sounds so good.
Great show guys!!
We are eternally greatful!
...Now all you have to do is play all of them Les Paul guitars through a Marshall ha ha ha ha!
Great show guys! Always nice to watch!
so pure, so honest and Doug can really play amazing.....pure tone
so glad you've returned.More shows please!
those P90s sound fantastic
You guys are great, so good to see some new videos from you. Ironically, you are chasing that Billy Gibbons tone, but I am trying to get that tone you get from your LPs and Vox. Keep em coming guys.
I'll tell you what that 1952 lp is just as good tone wise as the later 7/8/9/0, I'd take and play that for tone just as fast as the bucker guitars any day!!
First comment! Woo hoo! You gentlemen are awesome. Some of the tones you guys get are the best tones to be heard on the UA-cam. Thank you for doing what you do!
Man o man that 58 an that 60 sound so amazing to my ears.. but where's the 59 guys.. its the missing piece to your puzzle...lol I'm just kidding what you have there is so amazing.. awesome stuff guys!
First, all of them sound great! I absolutely love P90’s probably my favorite pickup. You can also hear the smoother more refined sound of the PAF’s, which I love as well. My favorite though might be the SG Les Paul in this video!
bought that book when it came out ten years ago! was 12 the first time I ever saw a band play live (in a gym to cap off the first week back to school at my Junior High), lead guitarist played a Gibson Les Paul cherry burst, first time I ever had a clear in-person look at someone playing popular rock music, didn't know how he was getting those sounds from what his hands were doing, and the sound was away from his instrument, seemed magical to me at the time, always felt Gibson Les Pauls are THE guitar, the best of the best, ever since, Fenders were always a second choice in my mind
thanks bro's all the info lots fun u tube so much stuff from a fender hater LOL got brill photos smashing it up. lots all sorts guitars alloff them Gibson SHINE; KEEP IT UP my son i just got a T LP Gold seri 2013 grate buy . nice guitar playing love it like the way ye make it fun
Great Show! Thanks guys!
Great show guys. I'd love to hear a comparison between the original series and the '68 and '71 reissues. The 68 standard (56 style glldtop)with P90s is a great guitar and they also made small numbers with humbuckers. The 68 custom had a maple cap. In 71 Gibson introduced a '58' reissue. It was a stoptail '54 design so go figure. They also did a '54 custom reissue that year. All these guitar had one piece necks and bodies and apart from neck to body angle and headstock angle were pretty similar to the originals and made by mostly the same people. I've had 50s models but my current 68 is 'better' than any of them. I know it would be hard to get them all in one place (pretty sure they made fewer 68 gold tops than original bursts and only about 400 '68 customs) but it would be really interesting to hear a comparison.
My 68 GT is a great guitar too. Unbelievable tone and a low low action
A buddy of mine had a 1971 '54 RI. It was a gold top, with two P-90s and wraparound tailpiece. The guitar acoustically was extremely loud and vibrant, louder than any I'd heard. Plugged in, it was a monster with extreme volume and cut. One piece neck, no volute, and that maple colored stain. But it weighed about 11lbs!
That 1954 just has such a beautiful tone, in all ranges and all styles. Those are the most underrated guitars, when they are The King....
That '58 Goldtop was the dreamiest sounding. And the SG. All sound great though.
Take away Doug's glasses and the hat and give him a blonde wig and its Spinal Tap's 'David St Hubbins!.....great vid guys ..thanks
Thank you Doug and Pat. Real Git TV.
To my ears the ‘54 is a winner. Close 2nd is the ‘52. And love the simple look of the ‘52. No silly binding and no plate under the pickup switch.
Welcome back lads, great to see you's
Regarding pickup adjustments on P90s. Foam rubber will compress pretty quick so it's better to use springs. Telecaster bridge springs work great if you cut them down a little. Great videos guys 👍
The best guitar videos on UA-cam!
You guys are really good at shaking the stick!
'52 for me, really sweet tone and the 63 has the real Angus Young vibe to it!
You Boys are gonna make this Strat Lover Buy a Les Paul... Maybe... lol Much Respect Love your Show...
Petey...
+MultiSpeedr The Les Paul Army is coming to get you Petey! D & P
Lol, well i am paying off a 2015 lp jr...
You guys are the best!
great job guys like your show
Great show again guys! I'll echo a sentiment though- we as guitarists can never get enough info or material regarding our interest- if you don't want to change the show up and provide info on the particular guitars and their owners, maybe a second 'behind the scenes' reel for the rest? Thanks again.
Damn i just love the way the 61 les paul looks. Absolutely sexy guitar.
Oscar's bridge pickup is the shizznitt! Sounds vocally more like a P-90 than a 'Bucker. But now, if Oscar went on a long business trip, I'd still sure take Jayne out! Great vids guys, ya'll are a lot of fun to "visit" with !
Btw, a friend of mine got to meet Les Paul at his Iridium gig and asked him point blank "Did you really not like the 'SG' LP's?" Les unflinchingly replied "Hated it!" So I guess that's not a "speculative" kind of assertion at this point lol.
According to Tom Doyle who worked with Les for years he said the same thing about the SG and Les's dislike for it. D&P
+D&P Thanks for the reply! You guys are a blast, the "Bob and Ray" of vintage LP lore.
Doug - you inspired me to pick up my guitar to rock out
Great show Dug & Pat!
54 is my Grail-Paul, "hot mod" version is great too (Grover machine heads, PAF humbuckers & cherry/honey burst refin).
When I get some good Brazilian Rosewood Boards in I'll have to make one or two replicas for myself.
Hi, i am so so impressed by your knowledge about guitars and pickups .....and playing too....I have a slightly used Tokai ls 160s GOLDTOP 56 reissue...Could' you give me a "starting point " setting for both pickups , from the bottom of the strings and the polepieces of each pickup ? For bass and trebble side of each one ( strings depressed at last fret !) in ../64 inch please ? It would be so so gentle and helpful :) !!!! Best regards from France
I older I get, the more I realize that the age of a guitar doesn't matter.
Either it's got tone, or it doesn't.
I've played brand new guitars that ooze tone, vintage ones that sounded like total crap,
and visa/versa.
Unless you mean the ones from Vintage by John Hornsby Skewes...
Their V100 models are all really awesome, real value for the money.
Their Midge Ure signature model is something really special: a 1952 goldtop with a Maestro Vibrola! How cool is that?!
Me too. We had a Chinese modern player Tele that just ripped. Absolutely shockingly good. And we've had some real clunkers of all eras.
I concur, this older guitars also don’t sound like they used to. For example the magnets on the pickups, etc.
Ginger Beer couldn’t agree more. My main axe for ages was their AFD model. Stunning solid flame maple top, real depth to it. Feels amazing and sounds like a proper Les Paul. It’s still my main live guitar along side my Gibson. I’ve had people offer me ridiculous amounts of money for what it is.
Wak Job I’ve got a custom shop strat and a parts caster with a squire body and a USA neck . And I usually pick up the parts strat , which proves your point , I think tone is in the hands and the neck
The 60's Bridge tone was instant JOE WALSH! I liked all these LP's. The P-90's are incredible sounding. The two Bucker LP's
Oscar(57) and Jayne(60) are sublime examples of how great these guitar are. I just do not hear that same quality of tone in any of the Re-isses.
Great Guitars!! awesome sounds!!
Great Video it would be interesting to also give the history and examples (old to new) of the orville guitar and the epiphone guitar
which I am a big fan of both
54 stands out to me as the nicest tone. Maybe it's because I grew up in the 90s playing humbuckers, but that tone just calls to me.
I signed up for email alerts on new Doug and Pat videos! The only UA-cam channel which I have set that up. I'm a month late on this one. :) Awesome demo. I had not seen that gorgeous 1960 burst before. All guitars, including the SG, sound amazing. Great playing Doug. Pat should join in for a "weapon" duel sometime. :) Also, try getting someone like Greg Koch, Bonamassa, or JD Simo to drop by for a visit one of these days. I'm sure if their schedule allows, it will happen. Best wishes
+PlayerX Oh yeah, we have been trying to get some players by but so far so bad. Billy G was in Portland a month or so ago. We promised to talk more about his barbecue sauce than what amp he used on the first ZZ Top album but still a no show. So we will persevere because we don't really have that much to do anyway or at least Pat doesn't. D&P
great shows ! I would like to know if there are differences between large dog ear P90 s - for ex LP juniors - and narrow ones - thanks
Very inventive episode. I was just wondering earlier this week whatever happened to you guys.
Hi guys excellent videos... any thoughts why the Vox ac10 is so amazing and why it seems so much better than a modern amp (to my ears from the vids you do ) .. Surely in this day and age with modern tech.. ?? Is it transformers ??
I'm sub in right now love you guys.
That 54 sounds awesome!
Great one guys!
Great sounding guitars, but that Oscar is something!
I've got a 2022 Gibson Les Paul Standard 50's P90 (8.2 lbs!). As great as my guitar is, I'd feel I had died and gone to heaven if I played "Oscar".
Love the delicate beauty of the 52 neck pickup. @33:24.
It looks like there's enough room to top wrap that 1952 gold top and drop the bridge down to the body and still have good action.
Could you review the Line 6 Variax with HD500x and DT-25 next? Oh, and could you put add a Metal Zone MT-2 into that as well?
nice guitars and the Sherlock pip is cool only the highest grades we blaze.
Man that 60 is a sweet guitar. And Oscar
The p90s sounded way better to my ears than the humbuckers. More pleasing dynamics especially on the neck pup. I love the deep carve on the 1952.
I would love to see a whole video on the 1960 burst!
That 1960 is perfect.
Nice retrospective. The AC10SRT sounds killer.
Thanks guys for your review and all those interesting informations and details!!!
One thing I did not understand (probably because of my low english level.... I'm french) is about the 57 gold top mahogany body that you spoke about. I did not understand the issue? What Joe Bonamassa explained about it and so on..?
The Les Paul gold top comes with a maple cap on a mahogany body unlike the Les Paul Custom that has a solid mahogany body, no maple cap. In 1957 there were some gold tops with humbuckings that did not have the maple cap, all mahogany like the Custom. D&P
OK! I understand! Thanks a million! What is the best? I suppose It depends who's playing the guitare and personal feeling?
Just found you guys, hope you are well.
yes love the p90 's ... going to put house of tone p90's into my 97 Epiphone Les Paul with 50's wiring kit. love that fat fat fat sound so clear........woman you can everything apart from my P90'S . lol
60 burst sounds wonderful. Anyone wanna buy a kidney?
The best show on youtube
Thank you
Great show!
I'm curious if the larger frets on the '59 have the very flat crown, just a hint of a curve, that seems unique to Gibson instruments, up until relatively recently. I don't think the Gibson's have this fret shape since they started using the Plek machines.
That's correct about the fret shape. They are wider and a bit taller (it seems) than the previous smaller frets. D&P
Thanks cats!! Your vid are sweet! Keep rocking!
Oh yeah, and leave Pat alone Billy Gibbons!!
Hi Doug and Pat, I'm just curious, where do you guys get these incredibly expensive guitars. I mean, here is some serious coin involved. And also do you personally own these Gibsons? And by the way , I really love the tone you get. Those old Vox amps sound so good. You don't even have to eq them. They sound great no matter what. I must say though, on you tube the tone is always the same, no matter what guitar you use at least to my ears. Don't get me wrong, I love this tone. VOX and Alnico blue speakers, nothing else needed. Thanks Michael Newell from Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada
"How did he do it with that?" That's right, he didn't. Just read an interview with Les from 2001 in which he points to a 1952 example of the Les Paul and says, "This is fucked up."
Que amplificador utiliza, tiene algún efecto para las guitarras?!!!!!
Wow, grandpa and pal are really talented.
don't ever take us old farts for granted. we grew up in the great guitar revolution.
Best les paul video ever!!!
+Leebak Prime I also have a request guys:
It would be wonderfull if you could make a vid about SG´s!!!!!
Wish this video never ended 😩 -
“It didn’t start out that way” 14:21 got me
Why does Pat NEVER play?
here i am to comment multiple years later, and someone has probably already talked about this, but... on the early ones, the necks were accidentally set at too shallow of angle, and they already had tail pieces, so they just improvised and put the strings through instead of wrapping them around. hence the weird bridge.
Love the show :) but i have a question for you fine gents, what are your thoughts on the new 2016 range of Gibson Les Pauls?
Don't buy em, not worth your time
OSCAR!!!What a tone!
