    i use Valvoline VR1 In my 1975 Ford Capri , it's a great oil and still has over 1200 ppm of zddp

    I ordered amsoil for my 2006 tundra was pricey but I will give a try.. $340.00 for all fluids

    I was just checking the benefits of zinc in oil. Must say this is excellent information and I learnt why I should be putting extra zinc in my older gm or converting it to a roller cam.

    That's right.
    I use race oil on my old D16z6 92 engine because of Zink.
    Race Oil 10w30.
    Please keep the quality up. No catalytic converter to worry any this oil is great.

    What is your opinion on Hy-per Lube Oil Supplement? If you don't know what this product is, it is similar to Lucas Pure Synthetic Oil Stabilizer but better.

    Great vid...but they had WAY more than 1200 ppm back then. Thats an extremely low spec. Most were 2-3k ppm.

    I have a 1989 Ford F350 with the 460 engine...is that engine old enough to require a high zinc oil, or will Amsoil XL or Signature series be ok? It is all factory stock by the way

      Amsoil Signature use additional additives to make up for the required reduction of zinc and phosphorus. For an 1989 I would thank it has a roller cam but if it has a flat tappet system then using the Amsoil 10W-40 Premium protection which is SL rated and retains the high zinc and phosphorus additives would be my choice.

    did the WW II aircraft use zinc in the oil. does the military AC have zinc in the oil , SR-71, U2 spy plane, , C-5, B-52, B-1, and fighter AC.

      Lubrizol introduced ZDDP in 1941. I actually don't know if world war 2 aircraft had it in their oil. Most motor oils up to that time were sulfurous, poorly refined oils with a lot of natural sulfur and esters that had lubricating properties. Gear oils from back then apparently contained lead soaps as the extreme pressure additive.

    Hi Sir.
    Can you please suggest me which would be good oil for old 2006 Skoda Octavia rider 1.9tdi diesel clocked around 90000 kms on odometer.
    Previously i was using mobil1 0w40 fully synthetic which has acea a3/b3, a3/b4 ,vw 505 505 spec.
    I want to try 5w40 fully synthetic this time.

    Dan I have a 2016 ram with a 5.7 Hemi I am not sure if I can run signature series 5w20 in it everybody says to run penzoil platinum in it since especially the 5.7 Hemi has upper valve train oiling issues.

      Paul, Pennzoil Platinum is equivalent to Amsoil XL. Signature series is superior and yes you can run 5W-20 in your Hemi. Personally, I would run Amsoil 0W-30 Signature Series for better High Temperature High Stress performance.     Hi sir, what about for those engines with bucket shims? they are very similar to those flat tappet system. do I need to use higher zinc engine oil for this kind of engines.

    Dan, do you know how much zinc additive I should put in my 1975 Honda CB750? The bike holds about 3 liters of oil. I've read a bunch of forums that say 1200 ppm is recommended, but I don't know how to convert that into ounces per liter. I'm not very good at math. : )

    Don't forget about small engines. Commercial mowers use high zinc oils. Kawasaki's SAE 30 points out it has zinc as obviously as they do the oil weight. AMSOil should develop an oil for commercial small engines.

    Older Chevy 4.3 Vortec engine; 270,000 km (168,000 mi). Am I supposed to believe the manufacturers that I should STILL be using that water-thin 5W-30??

      The deciding factor is oil consumption. If you are using more than 1 quart every 8,000 miles moving up to a 10W-40 would be a good choice. This means if you are down a half quart when changing at 3000 to 4000 miles then you are using more oil than the Factory spec. Increasing the viscosity to a 40 will reduce oil consumption. Quality 5W-30 will protect the engine but it can be consumed at a high rate in older engines.

      You should use a good CI-4+ rated diesel oil. Amsoil still makes one and it is hard to find them. Email me at danwatson@thelubepage.com and I will give you more info.

      Your right, I had a mild heart attack in 2015 so I slowed down. In 2019 I will be doing a number of new videos. My goal is to do at least one per month.

    AMSOIL had a Double-length Sequence IIIG Engine test done using Signature Series SN 5W30. The independent lab used a 3.8 L GM motor with flat tappets, For SN/ILSAC GF5 no more than 60 microns wear is allowed for cam and lifter , AMSOIL had 17.6 microns at 200 hours. Would the AMSOIL 10w30 ZROD oil have done better? www.amsoil.com/lit/g3320.pdf

      Theoretically, yes the ZROD would do better. How much, I can't say. I don't believe it would be linear, that is to say, since there are 400 ppm more zinc and phosphorus a 33% reduction is wear would be seen. I think there would be some diminishing returns for the increasing additive levels.

      Carryover of additives like zinc and phosphorous can poison the Cat. The less volatility of the oil the less carryover.

    Put a high zinc NON motorcycle oil in your Harley’s and you will notice a big difference. Less engine noise such as ticking and temperature runs cooler. Harley’s ( other than sportster) don’t share engine oil with a wet clutch. A motorcycle oil is actually a downgrade for engines that don’t require it. I dunno why amsoil and others still recommend motorcycle oils with friction modifiers removed for big twin Harley Davidson engines. Amsoil signature series or racing oil lubes the engine much better than a wet clutch designed motorcycle oil. Motorcycle oil is actually designed to allow MORE friction so that the clutch does not slip. Again Harley’s don’t share engine oil with the clutch, they are separate. So why use a oil in the engine that allows more friction ??? You want the least friction possible. If you got a Harley try 20w-50 signature series or the racing oil. You will notice it runs a lot cooler and top end noise disappears

    While this may be true for break-in, typically 800PPM is fine for stock engines past break-in, even with flat-tappet camshafts. Reference: GM Techline in 2007 and also that most Corvettes have specified SN oils with flat-tappets with no issue. The best option for break-in is obviously the Amsoil Break-In Oil, followed by the oil of choice, be it Z-Rod, Premium Protection, or Signature Series (as applicable for your use). Also note that too much ZDDP will actually CAUSE corrosion. The old adage of "as little as possible but as much as necessary" is about as accurate as you can get on this case.

      Yes, GM says 800 is fine. Experience may not fully support this level. It requires much much higher levels of ZDDP to cause corrosion. I would be happy to read the references on the corrosion and also if you could give me a link to the GM Techline article.

      Dan Watson GM Techline December 2007 :www.archivedsites.com/techlink/2007/12/ generally over 1400ppm increased long term wear and 2000ppm and over the ZDDP started attacking the grain boundaries in the iron, resulting in camshaft spalling. Not to mention how cat-unfriendly the phosphorous is. Newer additives are out now that do a better job (Boron as an example) without as many drawbacks.
      PS keep up the great videos! Very useful for Amsoil dealers such as myself!
