    Sucks because he’s clearly the fastest athlete in the 1500 by far but championship races aren’t about who is the fastest. I think regardless of if he wins the Olympic 1500, if he breaks the world record then there will be few people who will be able to come close to it for years to come. You say Neguse and Kejelcha were close, but Jakob won the races while leading them the entire time. The gravity of his performance was certainly leagues above the other athletes. He’s a generational talent, and you have to wonder if any of these athletes would be running as fast if not for the work he puts in.

    • @crosslink1493
      @crosslink1493 5 місяців тому +2

      If you're focused on that mile race last fall in Eugene, Jakob didn't lead that until the last lap. Nuguse was up near the front behind the pacers almost the whole time, and he followed Jakob as he went by with a little less than 400m to go. Both running 3:43 and only a few tenths separated them at the finish, I'd call them 'even' in ability.

      But he can *make* it about who’s the fastest if he wanted to. There is literally no reason for him to play into everyone else’s strengths when he could just drop them. It makes you wonder if he is actually capable of 3:27 or better after rounds, or without pacers/lights, or if he is scared of blowing up late in the race and so sticks to the status quo. He doesn’t need to make the race tactical if he’s confident he can drop a fast time in the final.

    Sir Peter Snell retired and went on to tertiary education while still at his peak and wasn't available for 1968.
    He did back to back in the 800 in 60 and then 64 only racing the 1500 in 1964.
    He was a weapon with a resting heart rate in the 30's helped by a much bigger heart than the average man.
    If you're interested in his development, you can't underestimate the inspirational training ability of Arthur Lydiard who basically invented modern training methods. He was another Kiwi.
    He probably inspired Sir Peter in his career choice as well, because Sir Peter went on to be a pioneer in sports medicine, I believe.

      Hi Dave. Sadly, the great runners of the 60's in middle distance encountered the financial situation that others today don't face. (The World Record holders and Olympic Gold medalists, I'm talking about) The need to earn a living! Guys like the great Aussie Herb Elliot, and New Zealand's Peter Snell in the 1500m (just to use them as examples) did not make enough money in the Amateur Athletics world. I spoke to Peter Snell in 1968 as he was a guest compare at a Track meet in Christchurch, New Zealand. I was competing in the 800m and tried to get an entry in the 1500m where Kip Keino was competing. "Naw", they said. "Piss off. You aren't fast enough!" (NB I got 3rd in the 800m. lol) Well, I paraphrase but you get the point. I asked Snell why he didn't keep going and he said basically he had a young family and needed to support them financially. There was no real prize money and no real sponsorship. Same thing with Herb Elliot, UNDEFEATED at senior level, at either 1 mile or 1500m and was the world record holder and Olympic Gold Medal winner, retired at age 22. I think. He then went the Oxford University to study to develop his career.

    It's definitely not going to be easy for Jakob. Even without his difficult start to the season, championship 1500m races are not the ideal environment for his ability set. I firmly believe that Jakob would be able to run a faster 1500m than anyone, if he has sufficient preparation, but he would need to not be at the front of the pack for most of the race for that to happen and it would need a very fast, even pace. Without pacers involved that is not likely to happen in any championship. The best way I can see for him to run the Olympic final is to take it out so fast that no-one wants to go with and then hope he can hang on. There is a chance in that scenario that the pack let him get too far ahead and don't have time to catch him, especially if no-one else wants to be at the front of the chasing pack. The problem is that there are runners like McSweyn, who prefer to be at the front of a fast moving pack, so it's unlikely that the pack would be moving at a more tactical pace.
    This is kind of what Jakob has been doing in the past two WC finals, but it has not been fast enough to drop everyone. It would need to be almost suicidally fast and the problem there is that it's likely to be suicidal.

    • @KW-wr3xv
      @KW-wr3xv 5 місяців тому +7

      He doesn't necessarily need to go out at a blistering pace, but he needs to pick up the pace substantially instead of trying to kick the last 200m. If you look at his performance in Tokyo, he negatives split his 1500m with each lap getting progressively faster. Adopting this type of model in all of his 1500m races renders him as almost unbeatable.

      The problem is that he's let the third lap dawdle enough to let the other runners catch their breath. He needs to hammer the third lap to burn the kick out of everyone else. But he's also making things harder for himself my constantly doing the 1500/5000 double. He has to keep his legs fresh enough for the 5000 semi the following day while everyone else can empty the tank.

    @ABiebuycksoccer 2 місяці тому +1

    I think there should also be a focus on tactics. Jakob's technique (as exemplified in the European Championship) of starting from the back should be considered. Of course, he avoids the early calamity of a fall. Unfortunately, passing the other runners over the next couple of laps, makes him run approximately 5-10 yards more per quarter. This is draining when a win is achieved at the margin of performance. A better approach might be an early lead and then allowing someone to take the lead by pacing too slowly. He could then comfortably do a "Kerr" or "Whiteman" by passing in the last 200m. Nuguse is clearly the one to beat in Paris. Ethiopian DNA!, and calm, almost non-chalant demeanor. The attention is not on Nuguse. The pre-olympic spotlight is draining and will be clearly focused on Josh and Jakob.

    What do the different colors of jerseys mean? Athletes from many different countries wear similar jerseys, which do not seem related to any product endorsement.
    At the 2:09 mark, Jacob can be seen one of the now familiar “dotted striped” jerseys. Most athletes wear blue jerseys. One athlete can be seen wearing a jersey patterned in the opposite direction.
    Jacob is wearing a black one, which I think means he is either the world record holder or defending champion in this event.
    If you have not already done so, can you please do a video explaining the jersey colors and patterns?

    • @calvinonmc
      @calvinonmc 5 місяців тому

      I got you. Nike is responsible for those blue jerseys and the black ones. Every year, Nike gives their pro athletes 3 different colorways. There’s the blue color for every signed pro/NIL athlete. There’s the black color for gold medalists/world record holders. And there’s a special green and yellow color way for the pre classic meet in Oregon (school colors). Also, Nike makes custom jerseys for the clubs they sponsor. Oregon Track Club (Cole hockers former club) uses white and green singlets, and Bowerman track club has a different singlet every year, you can google it. There’s also the team USA singlets and the singlets for the other countries they sponsor. All their singlets and shorts are the aeroswift model and you can find them online, just not in the pro colorways.

    I mean, the analysis here is good. But it’s also good to put things in perspective as a reminder. If you look at 2023, it was a string of world records and all-time top 4 performances, with only one loss in the entire season. It was the big one, but it was the only loss. On a good day, on paper, as of last summer, he was two seconds clear of everyone else at 1500m. But. That’s close enough for someone to take him on their own good day in a championship final. And that two seconds will probably be more like 1 second after this season. The rest are rising to the level of competition.
    He’s still a phenomenal athlete, but the truth is the competition is stacked in what is arguably his least natural distance on the track.
    At a 3:27 PB and age 23, he’d be crazy not to try a few years more to catch Guerrouj’s mark. He’s the best shot at it since Kiprop.
    But the 3000m, 5000m, 10000m, and even above are probably going to be where he will really shine.

Outsiders: Hocker, Nordas and don’t forget about rising junior world record holder Cameron Myers. Beamish is dangerous too should he decide to run the 1500 as well as steeplechase.

    It's obvious Jakob has caught a few real bad variants because he hasn't done that last 400 meter kick for some time and it's clearly evident. Honestly with this bio weapon it's a toss up of who can stay the healthiest leading into the race and some people respond worse to it than others. With the quality of runners that have shown prowess we should have dipped into a sub 8 minute 2-mile some years ago as these guys run 60 second laps in their sleep.

    If Jakob can run the race super hard near WR pace that's his best chance. You could have the top 3 all break 3:28 between him, Kerr and Naguse, with Hocker and a fully fit Whiteman in medal contention also. Anything tactical, I think Kerr has to be the favourite.
    Biggest event of Paris Olympics in my opinion, I can't wait!!

    Lots of mistakes here. First, going back to 2021, hocker’s last lap was 54.8, and it was the 4th fastest. Who was faster? Kerr 54.15, Ingebrigtsen 54.42 and kipsang 54.76. Yes Ingebrigtsen had the 2nd fastest last lap. Kerr was 1.0 seconds back at the bell, gained about .2 from 400 to 200, and nothing from 200 to 20 to go, when Ingebrigtsen let up.
    In 2022, off a similarly fast pace, Wightman stuck to Jakob, down 0.16 at the bell, and outran him 54.84 to 55.24 on the last lap. Jakob’s last lap was 4th fastest. Faster were Garcia, 55.02 after being down .98 at the bell, and Katir, 55.18 after being down .49 at the bell. Ingebrigtsen’s last 200 was 3rd fastest, as he was .03 faster than Katir from that point.
    In 2023, the official splits are all messed up. Nordas had a fine last lap, but it was about 53.5, not 52.61 (his last 200 is 26.5 or better). Look at the relative positions of everyone with 300 to go. Ingebrigtsen pulls away from everyone except Kerr and Nordas. He runs the 3rd fastest last 300.
    From 2021 Olympics to end of 2023, when Ingebrigtsen is 100% healthy (I believe him when he said he was not fully healthy at the 2023 champs), only Wightman has been able to stay with him and out kick him. I estimate Kerr has about an equally good kick, but he can’t ordinarily keep up. The 23 champs was his only career victory in 11 1500 finals against Jakob. Remember the semifinal in Budapest where Ingebrigtsen went 10th to first with a sub 52 (the official splits claim it was 50.6)
    Jakob has a very good kick. All this TV announcer drama talk that he doesn’t, is just false.

People are arguing about the location (2021 Olympics) but what about the time? Cant you beat the olympic record without in the olympic m? Is the olympic track different from the local track? Are people that blind to not see that the location does not matter and that the time and performance is the only thing that matters?

    I'm trying to understand why there was no mention of the fact that Jakob will *likely* try a double, if not a triple. He's said before that we would try it given the chance: 1500, 5000 and maybe 10000. But he likely will try a 1500/5000 double and that means Q rounds. What are Cole, Kerr and Goose running? Also, don't forget that Jakob famously told Goose to hang on if he wanted to break the US record, and that's what Jakob did in Eugene. Things can change in one year, but we know Jakob fears no one. Paris OLYs should be fun!
