You guys are amazing. Thank you so much!!
OHHH YURRRRRR!!!
#drums #guitar #metal #bass #band #rock
As a guitarist it's easy to overlook how much the drums actually change the perception of a riff. Great video.
Sometimes I'm listening to the riff, and suddenly I think the riff is being played faster somehow, but no, it's just the drums going double time. Song is the same tempo.
It really does. The drummer is what makes a riff interesting.
I always argued with a friend, he said that drums are the main thing in metal, and I say that guitars are the main thing. Looks like my friend the old metalhead is right
Samus out here shredding riffs better than some guitar demo channels!
👍👍👍🤘🤘🤘
Definitely
yea and I bet he didn’t use simply guitar either 😂
Most of us know he rips at guitar. This isn't new.
HELL YA DUDE!! I agree 100%
This is why i love metal so much. A little change can create such a completely different feel to any riff and allows for so many variations.
Blues and jazz (pop, rap, classic - you name it) folks can actually say the same about the rhythm section in their favorite genres.. Then somebody may say to them something like "Bro, it's not changing so much, it's still more-or-less the same thing, just with different drum patterns".. And then, they will answer you they think the same of the example in this video with metal🤣
So, long story short, it's definitely not only about any given genre, including metal😅
@@BrushlessCake yeah, not to mention the fact, that more hardcore oriented genres (like mathcore, metalcore, sludge, noise rock) can offer more intensity, complexity and rawness with more out of the box approach. Dillinger Escape Plan has maddening stuff.
Drums are NOT a little change
34 yrs old, dis. Vet. I'm officially inspired. Thank you. Starting my drum adventure this new year. Thank you.
hell yeah dude!!!
@@66Samus yea!
Crazy how blast beats make the riff sound faster and much more aggressive.
I won't be the 70th like on a comment with 69
I always forget that Samus is actually good at guitar so it shocks me every time 😂
Yup. Super talented chode.
Yeah, I was like, son of a b... :D Not only one of the best metal drummers of our time, nope that kid got some guitarchops as well.
@@BigMuff75 check out Samus' one hour challenge, if you haven't already:)
have you seen his the stillborn one cover?
You can’t be a drummer in a Metal/Rock band for long without learning how to play guitar
0:39 Guitar riff
1:36 Rock beat
2:10 Double time
2:36 Breakdown beat
3:02 Slow breakdown beat
3:31 Rock beat with double bass (8ths)
3:56 The Tom Tickler
4:21 Punk/thrasher beat
4:50 Rock beat with double bass (16ths)
5:20 Hammer to bomb blast
5:53 Traditional blast
6:24 Combination beat
I like tom tickler, breakdown and combination!
Wow dude. Sick riffage. I’ve been a guitar player for 25 years but these drum videos are just crack to me mannnnnn. Thx!!!
thank you Drew!!
@@66Samus Vice versa 66samus!!!
Crazy how much a beat can change the sound of the riff
That's what I mean when I say "I could like this song if it wasn't for the drums"
Yea man, it's because any particular drum hit landing on any particular note will accent it, with the percussive value of the drum (snare, kick etc) so depending on how the drum pattern is laid out, we'll have different notes in the riff being accented and brought to focus more. Kind of like if you were reading a poem where a second person would occasionally shout one of the words in accompaniment as you spoke it. Depending on which words were chosen to be shouted it would have an entirely different meaning and feel.
@@fwsound3924 lmao that was a good exolanation of accents, I'm stealing it ty
This video is the best example of how drumming works.
Every musician should see this, especially drummers.
thank you!!!

One thing I keep seeing on every video is that Samus takes time to respond to his viewers. Class act and a killer musician.
and I will take the time to do it again! haha
thank you so much dude
I loved the 6. That sounded really awesome
I thought 6 was awesome as well!
That’s actually insane how fast and clean your double bass playing is. Absolutely incredible!
wow man thank you very much!
@@66Samus How do you know William is playing World of Warcraft?
This is pretty soilwork (dirk era)
Wow sick guitar. Total inspiration. Giving people reminders of whats possible. Thx butha...
Hate to bring it but those aren't actually mic'd drums. So we do not know how clean he is by hearing the finished track. But fast, hell yeah!! :)
You learn 2 important things in this video.
1. Samus plays guitar, and is better than most other channels too.
2. Just how much a different drum beat can change the entire feel of just one riff.
Барабанщик просто обалденный
He can play guitar, he can play drums, but still can't crawl
One of my favorite examples of #2 is "On Your Time" by Dark Tranquility at around the 4:26 mark. I always liked how the riff stays mainly the same, but the drums get more and more complex, completely changing the feel of the riff by the end.
#1 kills me when he says "I never play guitar anymore" and then shreds a perfectly played, complicated guitar part
#2 that's the sauce my man!
Hell yeah. I also learned that drag and drop guitar riff into EZBass to make bass tracks. I've been doing the bass midi manually like a complete bahee!
Bro 11 was amazing, when I first heard your riff I immediately heard potential for an amazing build-up to something incredibly majestic and you delivered my good man.
thank you dude!!
I really liked the ride cymbal one you did. That ride sounded amazing!
One minute into the video and I had to stop and comment: Samus' guitar playing is absolutely insane! Perfectly hard picking, great timing, zero string and fret noises! Just a great performance! This would fit so well in a mix! Super impressed!
dude THANK YOU!
omg same hahaha
@@66Samus Dude I have just subscribed you.
I really love drumming ⚓
+ a perfectly executed pinch harmonic
This guy keeps his power in his hair and it's making me nervous thinking about how someone could just sneak up behind him so suspiciously and help themselves. omg please keep it safe.
😂🤘
He’s like Samson from the Bible , or should I say Samusson
Haha Agree!!! That shits gold!!!
Watch out for that woman who likes tying men to kitchen chairs……! 😂
I would kill to hear this as a complete song, the riff is just perfect
Dude, I've never seen you before, but this is freaking fantastic! Love the breaks from the video for silly moments, they fit and make sense and are funny!! Great talent all around!
thank you so much!!!
You should definitely make a series out of this
This is easily my favorite video you have made yet. Awesome
thank you!!
Great video. Love seeing how each style colors the riff.
Combination was my fave because it seemed to follow and support the riff the best while maintaining its own character.
Gotta love the precision of you drumming. Cheers and blast beats.
For this riff, I personally felt the punk beat and traditional blast worked the best. They captured the energy of that riff so well.
lol
Dude same, it’s 1-7-10 for me. Like you said 7 wins overall.
Same Here 👌
Very 2006 in flames vibes with that one
Agreed, but I also felt the tom thing fit it much better than I thought it would. It would make sense to play the tom beat first and then go into the trad blast IMO.
Honestly that tribal tom beat/rhythm always, ALWAYS fills me with excitement, anticipation and (in a good sense) tension. Especially over any kind of faster metal guitar riff. Never disappoints.
Number 5 immediately came to mind when you first played the riff and I liked it best.
You play amazingly and that was a lot instructive to me ! I love variety and combinations of progressive to full blast with deep heavy break downs.
That's why I loved em all. Thanks a lot 😃❤
Honestly, the regular rock, rock double time, rock double bass and the tom ones fit the riff the best in my opinion
The fact that so many different beats sound good with the same riff is an illustration of how difficult it can be to write original material. Can only choose 1 for each part of the song!
Trying iterations in composition sucks hard, but it's necessary, unless you plan to sit down and pump out a perfect track first time, every time, for the rest of your life lol
That combination was so sick man! I loved IT 🔥
Love this exercise. Nicely demonstrates his different a riff can feel, depending on the underlying beat. Very well done.
I'd love to hear a full version of this song someday, it already has potential to be a sick melodeath song based on that riff alone. Very Soilwork-like
Also reminded me a lot of Dethklok, especially Andromeda and the melodic bridge of Hatredcopter. Love the Hero Forge profile mini too, btw, I always spot a fellow forger :)
The combination beat was honestly the best. Love your videos and your personality so much!
Been playing drums for 40 plus years until i had a stroke in 2017 this video has actually made me want to go and have a go at playing again, as my memory was affected, i needed a push!, will have a go at the weekend, with me luck guys and girls!
Good luck my friend
I’m in total awe. How incredibly talented!
Number 7 was spot on with the riff!! 🔥
Agree 100%, 7-1-2 is the top three for me, or rather the only three beats that match the riff
Ok dude, this is the second one of your videos I've watched and I'm gonna have to sub. Not only is there kick ass musical wonderment but I also laughed my ass off! Excellently done.
thank you dude!!
Lol you’re the best bro! always amazed entertained and amused ❤ I like how you show so many possibilities for one riff by just changing the drum beat, creatively dope!
That was amazing. Excellent technique, tons of creativity, knowledge of the genre. Pure gold and a huge amount of musicality in les than 7 minutes. Cheers, man.
thank you Camilo!!
7 is the beat for this riff and the blast as well. Perfect for a sick melodeath jam
You are like metal Weird Al. I am stoked to discover your channel! We fuckin' love you, dude. I'm going to have to go with number 6 onward. All those have me even more excited to get my family our first kit.
you rule Danny, thank you!!
I was just gonna comment the exact same thing, "Metal Weird Al Rooooocks!"
Actually this is a pretty nice practice to try out for a band to find interesting arrangements
I really appreciate this video, as guitar player sometimes I have trouble figuring out what kind of riff will sound good over what beat and hearing the same riff over multiple beats really helped me understand. I'm trying to program my own beats for my music and eventually I want to learn real drums so I can actually play them.
I don't think I've ever been more inspired to get back behind my kit. I've been taking a break from it and this video has reminded me why I started playing. You ROCK Samus!!!!
YOU rock Drum Daddy!!! thanks man
This video really shows how besides the actual skills of a drummer, what really makes the song a great song! The choices every drummer makes, based in their taste and talent, are what actually can make the real difference between a good and a great drum part adding value to the song! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
It is insane how great you are at both the drums and guitar. My mind is blown.
The combination flowed FLAWLESSLY
Sick AF. It would be cool to see all of the beats at once, like one after another, while the riff continuously plays. Like how a song can change up it's drum and rhythm to give a different feel.
Amazing how the drums can change the vibe and overall awesomeness of a song
Dude, I love your vids!! Keep rocking man🤘🤘🤘
Dude that guitar riff was awesome and I loved all the drum patterns too!! Every vid I watch makes me wanna play drums more and more you rock dude!!!
thank you so much!
The combo beat at the end was tight!! There are so many options to choose from, but the 11 you picked were def great ones!
Reminded me of the newer Disturbed songs a lot. I like that one and the 16th double best.
You gotta get in more with these guitar videos. That playing is underrated as FHUACK
thank you dude!!
I did a video like this a few years ago. Great topic. Many people don’t realize how different the same riff can sound with a change of drums under it. Drummers have loads more influence on a band’s sound than just whether it’s in time or not.
Glad UA-cam recommended this one! Awesome. Very well done
thank you Luke!!
I liked 6 & 11.
Was cool to hear how different the riff sounded with each beat!
Throw #3 in there with them, and these were my favorites as well
Rock Beat and double Bass my favorite!! Love videos like this !! Greatly appreciated 💯
this one too what!?
What does the video say posted 8 hours ago but your comment say's 2 days ago? 😂
Nice, you have some killer chops man! 🤘🏻
This was amazing Bro keep the good work 🤘🏻
4:21 This is called "Hey Al 2" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
2:35 this was so badass I need a full song like this bro.
This is so good man
First time bumping into one of your vids, great content thank you :). Also - holy poop that double bass footwork.
thank you!!
This could definitely be made into a series and/or collaboration videos in the future. Get a riff created by another creator, and then you come up with some drum beats for them. Could even then get the guitarists opinion about which one they like the most, or something similar.
Loved the video!
Dude i didnt even know you could play guitar and then you just bust out one of the most badass riffs ive ever heard 🤯
What a drum god this guy is! Those traditional blastbeats were absolutely eargasmic!
haha thank you dude, and I love your name :)
Holy crap dude!
You are amazing!!
Just discovered your greatness and subscribed immediately.
Wow, thank you so so much!!!
1, 2, 5, 8, and 10 fit this particular riff the best imo. It really depends on the context of the song though and where it would actually hit. Drums are so important to the vibe of the song and this is a great example of that. Great playing as usual and your guitar tone is sick
Number 5 was so NOICE it made me pull a muscle in my face. This is a brilliant demonstration of how important drums are in a song! As others have commented, the drums can completely change our perception of the song, even if every other instrument is unchanged. For a long time, my favorite "song" was a demo MP3 by some drum program label. It was a basic distorted guitar riff, and several different beats played over it. It literally makes an entire song with one riff on loop, and the drums deciding the dynamic and structure of the song.
Most of these drum beats are indistinguishable from each other.
Tell me you don’t listen to music without telling me you don’t listen to music…
@@isheetfromaswhole3657 My drumming skills are extremely basic, but I was able to distinguish them. Then again, your profile name rhymes with 'troll'...
@@wamporeycidulgb I can distinguish between them. Let me rephrase. For every three only one stands out. You do know that playing a melody is like playing a drum beat right? What an experienced musician would do is play all those variations on guitar in a song or piece of music. You want my advice? Stop thinking exclusively in terms of mainstream music. This UA-camr does, judging by this video anyways. Instead of thinking I might be a troll instead consider that I'm right because I am. I play an instrument. The rhythms he played would all be used just not on the drums, through the melody.
On a side note, I picked my name for a reason. It can be read multiple ways.
@@isheetfromaswhole3657 I think, in music, what stands out and what doesn't, is largely dependent on individual music preference. A song / piece of music can (and should, in my opinion) be varied by changing what is performed on ALL instruments, not just the drums, but this youtuber's intention with this video was to show how JUST changing the drums can change our perception of the music, and I think that came across very clearly. I don't even know what mainstream music is, but I'm sure hardcore jazzheads and metalheads might call my music preference mainstream, and I don't care. I'm skeptical of calling anything with blastbeats 'mainstream', though.
I get that you think you are right, and referring to music preference being different for everyone, I can't say you're wrong from YOUR point of view.
I disagree with your assessment, and it's always going to be that way. We experience music differently, and we have different opinions about it.
Man, I just found the channel, & I'm having more fun watching than ANYthing else I've seen in a good, long while -- Thanks 🤘

Thet was absolutely great.

I love this style of video. Getting to see your creativity. I hope to see more of these in the future.
I didn't expect such a metalcore sounding riff from Samus
You ever listen to Decrepit Birth? Most metalcore death metal I ever heard
Pure energy load with a handful of humor and funny looks! Thanks a lot, man 8)
thank YOU!!
Love your videos man..... keep going and this 2023 be an even better year for you....
thank you so much Luis!!!
Awesome video. I keep trying to explain to my drummer that you can't just randomly do whatever beat on a riff. It completely changes the vibe. Choosing the right drum beat is so important when writing a song and defining the vibe you want.
Fire this drummer.
One of my favorite videos you’ve ever made! Fantastic work my friend 🤘
Bro what a legend you are!
so clean!🔥🤘🏽
This is one of my favorite concepts. I really liked how 5, 7, and 9 worked. I could see them being used in a song together with 5 for the verse,9 for the chorus, and 7 for the bridge.
It'd be cool to hear these kinda metal riffs over non traditional stuff like reggae / surf beats.
Also my whole discord says we look alike haha. Keep up the sick vids man! (Nice guitar playing also)
Wouldn't heavy guitars + reggae beat just end up sounding like a skank part?
your personality is soooo refreshing
Started watching this channel around Thanksgiving of 2022 and this gentleman blows my mind on how talented he is at music keep creating this astonishing content for all viewers thank you man🤟🤟
thank you so much!!
This is really interesting, it's neat to hear how much the pace of the song seems to change just from the drums. I think I'm going #2 and #11!
Okay, yeah. I like how you're mixing it up with the videos. This is premium stuff man. Great work!
Awesome video again as usual!
OMG DUDE! I'm speechless! Pure talent!

7 is going to be my favorite, no matter the guitar riff. It should be in every song.
Awesome, really enjoyed this.
I don't have words for describe this riff
Just amazing
Combo beat was perfect! I also love how it really did sound like Chris Adler for that breakdown beat.
What always sounds the best to me is when drummers go from a blast beat, fill, then play 16th bass drum with 1/4 notes on crash, i live for those types of transitions
I can't help, but love the traditional blast. 😁🤘🔥
LOG breakdown, it opened the door for me!
