Don’t missinterpret this video.
That wood construction is temporary.
The whole cathedral will be rebuilt using same technics and materials as the actual one.
Modern technics are still used, same with the materials. Original old wood is not available anymore.
This is a amazing recunstruction, it is such a magnificent building. Thank you to all in its reconstruction. I did visit Dotre Dame in 1976 - 1978 👍 Au
It’s like a work of art
It's a shame that the original burnt down, but this new construction is beautiful, it'll be good for another 1000 years. Great work!!!
Yes, it MUST last 1000 years.
What you are seeing in that image probably isn't what you think it is. Theses wooden arches are located under the stone arches that remained after the fire and are there to stabilise the structure. All of that is temporary support.
@@Touch_Finger It all has to be milled by hand. There is absolutely nothing that is perfectly straight in a building that old, and especially not one that has been damaged by fire.
I think there are craftsmen milling all the lumber by hand for the roof.
burnt down or was burned down ? Suspect the latter unfortunately.
for all us non-believers who thought all Master Craftsmen were long dead and buried.
No master craftmanship was seen in this video.
I am British and I live in France, and I can tell you, unequivocally, that there are many, many artisans, here who do old fashioned work all the time. Wood, stone, porcelain, pottery, clothing, music, farm work. France is a serious country and respect quality.

Absolutely stunning. So happy to see this reconstruction. Stay safe!!
My goodness, this is a quite amazing piece of art in wood by the fantastically skillful craftsmen and craftswomen employed on the reconstruction of Notre Dame.
"craftwomen" I died laughing, thank you xD
All that wood bolted together is temporary...it's just to support the arched brick vaulting and will be removed eventually.
I think builders are of the most amazing discipline of all, as this shows.
Amazing craftmenship! Outstanding!
Wow what beautiful work
Reminds me of when I rebuilt a brick BBQ in my garden a couple years ago. It had a brick arch over it, so I had to build a temporary wooden frame (that looked very similar to these) in order to lay the bricks down in an accurate arch, and then removed it after the mortar had set.
Looks like the same thing is happening here, and all this woodwork is just temporary until the vaults set fully.
I think a lot of people here think that the wooden frames are permanent, lol .
@@rossmilner6780 yeah, my neighbour could see me building the BBQ from their house. After I had completed the arch and waited a few days for the mortar to set completely before removing the frame, he wondered how it would work with all that wood in the way without it catching fire 🙄
The Romans invented it, and we still use the same method today. Your neighbour needs help 🤣🤣🤣
Visiting the cathedeal in Cologne Germany. The upper roof was made from steel in 1860. This saved it from burning in WW2. Why did they not consider this in rebuilding Notre Dame?
I'm glad to see its been Restored up again.
SO BEAUTIFUL
The degree of craftsmanship is literally incomprehensible. The Cathedral is in good hands.
And congratulation for the engineers in charge of the restauration.
Magnificent, and well worth the time and the money. God Bless our heritage....The heritage of the Christian world.
Magnifique travail des ébénistes d'art.
Such awesome work. Not the orrdinary stuff. Nice
I don't know if the public ever gets to see this, but they should give tours of the reconstruction. Craftsmanship that you just don't see anymore
Damn! They could sell all that wood falsework afterwards to tourists!
Where did all the wood come from? St.Paul,Minnesota.

Was it ever concluded that the fire was accidental?
Amazing that all of that wood will be removed after the stone work is complete.
Exellent design.
Did they add a fire suppression system?
WOW!!!
amazing work, all that brand new timber and all that NEW technology that is being put into the ancient cathedral.
It is upsetting that all that old workmanship is lost, but now the cathdral will last many many more centuries to come and it will have far less chances of further mishaps.
It is seeing a new age of only the best craftsmen who work on it and restore it to its former glory.
"New " technology was used way back then. It took many decades of work to construct these buildings. Things evolved during the construction. I don't think that one single mason or carpenter particularly relished working 200 feet above the streets with no protection of any sort. Of they would have had the same tools/techniques that are available today, they would have used them. It was not done as some romantic gesture. It was dirty, dangerous and brutal. They would have loved to have had chain mortisers, chop saws, electric winches........,...
@@catabaticanabatic3800 The old technology they had back then was completely different to the new of today. Different steel, different fasteners, different tools, different wood, different concrete, different plaster, different paint. There is just different everything.
Many practices are very similar or virtually the same, but that's about it.
The 3D scan done prior to the damage was invaluable to the reconstruction
What you are looking at is not what will replace the old roof structure. All this "new timber" you see is just to provide support for the reconstruction of the stone vaults. It will be taken apart and removed once the vaults are repaired. The cathedral actual timber framing is being re-done the same way it was done 800 years ago, with hand hewn timber and with the same workmanship as the original. Old workmanship is not lost at all.
Is this finish work or false work to support masonry?
Officially, the new frame is identical to the original. The video shows something else: A reengineered frame computed from modern finite element platforms and computed in CPU clusters. Am I wrong?
It's just here to hold the stone during reconstruction and will be taken down later
The new timber framing for the roof and the steeple are identical to the ones that burned. Is not what you are looking at in the video. It's only the supports for the reconstruction of the damaged stone vaults. It will be removed once the vaults are repaired.
One little fire extinguisher, just in case. One!
Does anyone know if the new wood is treated for fire resistance or beetle damage?
This structure is magnificient but temporaly... just to keep the building safe during the restoration.
So wood treatment isn't much a matter in that case... it won't last longer than 3-4 years.
It defenitely is, especially after accident like that
Thanks for the video.
All that roof framing is just temporary bracing
But are they going to leave the OSB flooring in or remove it once they are finished?
God Bless ...
This has nothing to do with belief, Notre Dame is a cultural icon in Paris. In front of it on The Parterre is Point Zero from which all distances in France are measured. It is in many ways the heart of France. It was built in 1163 and took roughly 200 years to complete. It is one of the oldest and most well known cathedrals in the world. It is beyond beautiful.
quel gigantesque travail !bien qu'aujourd'hui les moyens de levage sont bien différents de ceux du moyen age.comment les hommes ont ils fait à l'époque pour hisser de telles pièces de charpente ?
Avec une cage à écureuil.

Hi 👋, Amazing work, it’s a shame that a lot of skilled craftsmen and talent has disappeared over the years, and skills like this have not been passed on to another generation, as it takes many years to do an apprenticeship for this type of work, I have watched skilled craftsmen on the Internet over in Japan and China building constructions by hand. It seems like over there people are prepared to start learning skills like this at the very early age., and of course, nowadays, a lot of things are made on CNC machines, where the scale was then involved in the programming of such machines to do the job, I am now retired in my 70s living in France, are used to have my own business in the UK,
Specialist Joiner cabinet maker , I look forward to seeing more of the renovation project, Phil from the moulin France.
Will it burn well?
Occupez vous de votre pays. Trolleur.
It is necessary to know that all this bracing in the video must be removed to complete the restoration as well as the exterior bracing under the Flying buttresses. These braces are temporary to stabilize the vaulted ceiling and were needed to insure that no additional damage might occur during the cleanup above of the timber and lead pollution.
Yes, a lot of people commenting seem to think that what they see on the picture is the actual timber framing of the roof when it's just a temporary support for the reconstruction of the damaged stone vaults.
@@CH-tn3fn actually, these supports were installed under the entire vaulted ceiling. Except for the transept. That was left open for the major work to be completed. The supports will need to be constructed for the transept so the vaulting ribs can be installed, as this was the area that completely destroyed when the spire collapsed. The thumbnail only shows theses temporary supports under the vaulting of the apse.
Once the main vaulting arches are finished in the transept, then it will still need to have the infill blocks created. Only then can the temporary supports be carefully removed. As there is the chance that due to the weakening of the transept columns the entire thing could collapse again. As fa4 as I have seen, there has been no provision to permanently secure these columns from moving, even with the multi ton weight of the spire framework that has been installed. Most people have only recognized that they desired to have an exact replica of the original constructed and have given no consideration to what would actually be necessary to insure no further damage. This roof was never and will never be seen by any of the public, so any additions to secure the walls for the future, will never be seen, if above the ceiling.
No wonder it burned so well, look at all that firewood.
They called the wooden structure supporting the roof 'the forest'. Yeah, no wonder it burned... 😢
It's hardly going to be all steel and in that fire steel would have collapsed aswell with the heat
@@djhago3123Tho if it was steel, it would be nothing to burn🤷♂️
@thealaris rarely find all steel in a 800 years old building
Let’s hope another fire doesn’t start during reconstruction.
I do hope they install sprinklers, even though they are ugly to look at.
Добавили современные технологии в каркас крыши..
And what's wrong with those? If we have modern tech that can make it better why wouldn't we use it, especially when original roof structure already had metal braces in it
No twyvils were harmed in the making of this bolted construction
In view of the massive steel reinforcements, the question may be asked: Was there a German structural engineer at work?
Not a single one !
The new roof structure will not support as much as the original. The annual rings of trees are larger these days than they used to be. Otherwise impressive work!
😮
Neu trifft alt. Die Aufhängung der Dachkonstrurtion ist ziemlich modern.......
Unfortunately, the wooden structure is not oak but pine. It won't be very durable.
Dire que le gouvernement français a accusé à tort la société le bras d’avoir mis le feux avec un mégot de cigarette et grasse à cette société il ont prise pour ça reconstruction un grand merci à la société le bras frère de Jarny
Umm, sprinklers?
With all the new wood, it is still a fire hazard. Unless used some wood treatment or something.
Better than new ! There are lots of other masterpieces (worldwide) that deserve restoration.
How many oak forests went?
As many trees as necessary. I suppose your home contains no wood.
It is estimated they need between 1000-1500 depending on their size as they need 2000 m³ of wood. They have scoured the French countryside looking for suitable trees that are as old as possible.
I worked on a job in York where a 14th century beam needed replacing, they found one in a wood yard in Boston which was checked for age, shipped to York, where they removed the old one and carpenters painstakingly carved it identically to the original with adze to replicate the original cuts. This would not be possible with Notre Dame as there are few trees that old but and not many 1800's wooden beams lying around. It is better they build it with wood that is mostly the same age as it will dry and season at a similar rate.
Thanks for that. Most interesting.
As the forest is diing, I don’t find it right to replicate traditional wood work rather than deploying newer techniques and technology and making the church follow a time evolution, while keeping the core spirit.
I think God wanted his Paris home renovated and restored for another 1000 years.. That’s why the fire took place… If not for it, no one, not even the French Government would have undertaken a restoration of this magnitude..
The original wooden supports for the roof was spoken of as "THE FOREST" and they burned like one, it is to be hoped that the stewards of other vulnerable architectural triumphs of the past also built of wood now have fire protection systems and everything possible done to minimise fire damage from lightning strikes to imbecile's with cigarettes.........
I am not sure it is what I think...so much nuts and bolts? that couldn't be...

too much modern hardware but ok.
Cause why not use modern tech, if it'll make structure better for longer period of time🤷♂️
une blinde !
After the fire I believed it should be restored to look exactly as it was when viewed from outside, but materials, instead should be modern. The 'aguille', for instance, could be entirely constructed with composite materials like carbon fibre, instead of wood and lead as the original one, but aesthetically it should be as identical to the original as possible. And the roof structure also could be made of metal, or a non flammable material, this way hundreds of old trees would have been spared.
Timber is a renewable resource.

@@Touch_Finger Take a closer look at the video. Theses arches are temporary falsework in order to stabilise the structure. The wooden roof that you are talking about is above the stone vault.
