Good But you’re telling us about the fire: everyone knows there was a fire! It’s like saying in the 1960s humans went to the moon, and they went for a walk

Indeed it's an amazing city and cathedral. Last time I visited was a week in July 2016 - at that point we skipped over the iconic church, thinking we'll see it next time" (have been to Paris several times). Hoping to get back sometime next year.
Yes. I saw it in 1984 (at 24), 1999 (39), and 2015 (55). A week each time. I had thought that I was satisfied with my Paris experiences, as with London and Rome, which I have seen even more times, due to business trips. and that I would turn to the other cities I have seen fewer times (Edinbugh, Amsterdam, Bruges and Ghent, Florence, Milan, and Venice, etc.) and those I have never seen (Dublin, Copenhagen, Vienna, Prague, many German cities, Athens, etc.). I thought this 14 minute video would be enough to look into the history, fire, and re-building, but now I realize I could watch much more. A jewel in the crown of not only art and religion but of civilization itself, of human achievement, of humanity. I was raised Catholic but am no longer a religious person; still, I am spiriturally stirred each time I visit one of these major churches/cathedrals of Europe.
I am British, but have lived in France for twenty five years. It was a devastating shock to see the fire. I am so glad that they have rebuilt and restored it.
@@glennstockley2197 It depends on the way you look at it. It certainly represented an organization of some tyrannical humans, but it also represents the magnificence of human artistry, loving labour, and dedication to a higher level of Being. I am sorry for your pain.
That experience of singing in such a monument must have been so memorable. I can just think of the acoustics to start with! What level of adult voice were you singing?
I marvel at the artistry of those generations past who built such a beautiful church with practically their bare hands. They had to invent procedures and techniques as they went along! But I am equally impressed by today's workers and the amazing capabilities displayed, not only in the building, preservation, and restoration of the project, but of the incredibly advanced technology used. They are indeed the modern descendants of those artisans of the past. I am so happy to see how practically the whole world responded and helped make the restoration a reality.
There are so many bad things happening in the world. This restoration and the story of its people and workers warm our hearts and help a little deal with the rest. Hence is the spirit of Notre Dame.
"Equally impressed" by the past workers who did this unbelievable feat like you said with their bare hands and solely to the Glory of Our Lord and by today's workers who most likely do what they do for the payment through computers and cranes. Dude. "Equally" no.
This shows what can be accomplished when HUMANITY decides there's more that connects us than separates us. Sadly, it often takes a tragedy to remind US of this.
To see any Cathedral go up in flames is very sad but too see so many people come together and rebuild this beautiful cathedral pulls at my heart too see all these great men & Women putting their hearts and love into rebuilding Notre Dame 😊❤❤
Beautifully said. I totally agree with you. What a marvel that Notre Dame has been from the very beginning. Bless everyone who have been a part of her magnificence.
There was never any doubt about restoring one of the most iconic and important buildings in France. All the nonsense about this building being destroyed was media hype, many of Europe’s great Cathedrals were severely damaged in WW2 are were subsequently restored.
@@paullewis2413yep. I remember quite well all the BS you saw in the various comment sections at the time under reports about the fire. It was truly mind boggling.
@@paullewis2413 Maybe some anti-Christians in the media wanted it to fall down, as they do Christianity itself. That would not surprise me with the all out war on Christians these last few years, with some virtue signalling for a certain 1400 year old religion from the M.E. instead.
I live in Australia but my empathy made me cry because Notre Dame is a world wide icon. T o her people, culturally and historically, it is a major centre of their identity. to me, she is a huge part ofmy world. Not sure why, but it is.
I am so happy for the people of France. This beautiful church is such an important part of their history. I will never be able to see it in person but my good wishes will be there on Dec,24th.
You a right that it is important part of French history. Of the French soul, really. But also the soul of the world, I think. It sets in the crown of human achievement.
EIGHT CENTURIES. Imagine for a minute the original planners, masons and artisans could see that MOST of their building survived this incredible inferno. Including the at least 700 year old stained glass windows! I’m American, and Catholic. Watching the fire hurt my heart. I’ve kept pace with the restoration. All of Europe seems to have stepped forward and put their best in it. And France? There are no words that suffice.🇺🇸🦅🇫🇷
I also think of the many generations who succeeded one another to build this architectural marvel... 182 years at a time when the average lifespan was 30/35 years....
We are most of the time not believers ourselves, but obviously, protecting our country and heritage was always what mattered most. And so, having Notre Dame repaired was obvious. The only debate was about how to repair it. Some advocated for a modern style roof made of glass. Since, after all, all these old buildings have evolved along the centuries and millenia since their were first erected. And some considered that it was betraying the heritage of Notre-Dame to rebuild it to her 1857 appearance. On a side note, this is not only about France. If you like old historical churches that evolved throughout History, and don't know about it yet, look for Sainte-Sophie. Built by the early Byzantine Empire of Justinian in the 6th century. They still can't fathom how they could build this at the time. 5 centuries older than Notre-Dame and still standing. Although Turkey made it a mosquee and does not take good care of it, unfortunately.
I saw Norte Dame in 1982. It left a huge impression on my 22 year old self. When it burned I bawled like a baby. Centuries of history lost. Being from the US where there is very little “deep history”, I have been unsure how they will get back what was lost. I commend their efforts.
My grandson visited as part of his senior High School class trip and after they left, on their way to the next stop, they saw that Notre Dame was on fire! He, along with his classmates, were among the last people to view it before the devastation! 😢
I can understand the feelings. For some unexplainable reason, I had decided for the first time to follow the Holy Week Ceremonies at ND via UA-cam (KTO, etc) for the first time in my life; I am a Gramma from Canada and I usually watch Mass and Ceremonies locally. As I was watching on my portable, I saw the beginning of the smoke at the corner of my left eye on CNN (there was no sound, but I was dumbfounded). I remember the feeling of such abnormality and of "No, this cannot be!"I spent the whole night praying for the French people in such crisis and especially for its firefighters! It never occurred to me that I would watch such tragedy that evening, that Wholy Week!

Wow, I didn't know that about Hitler's request about burning down Paris & Notre Dame. Amazing soldiers who defied him, & that was an incredible act by them. It really warms my heart ❤️.
It seems that on hindsight, Notre Dame suffering an incident is as ominous as say, the Arc de Triomphe suddenly cracking. During the First World War, one of the statues at the Arc de Triomphe suddenly cracked and lost a part, around the same time as the battle of Verdun. A coincidence?
I have never been to Europe. But watching this magnificent church burn, I cried. It was such a loss that it was visceral. I most likely will not see it in my lifetime. But the fact so many countries and people pledged money, help and time was amazing. It is the restoration of a beautiful lady! Thank you to all who restored her!
I personally visited it in my youth and I will never forget the feeling of being next to heaven in that place and the way the passage of time inside shows us we’re here only for a brief sojourn in this world and things like the Cathedral will remain here long after we’re gone.

I'm Brazilian, far away from France. In 2019 when the fire broke out I was an atheist [Our Lord and Our Lady have since then rescued me from the path to hell flames through Their Undying Love, praise Our Lord and His Holy Mother]. I was on the bus going home after work when I saw this tragedy on the news on my phone, and even as an atheist I started crying, so I have no idea what it must have been like for French Catholics to witness, may Our Lord and Our Lady be with them then, today and always.
I can assure you, even as a French atheist, this tragedy has affected most of us. Only people insensitive to history and culture were laughing it off on social media while she was burning. Thank you so much for your compassion.
Wow that’s nice of you to care. Cause I remember very well that at the same time Notre-Dame was burning, so was the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. To a point where people were complaining about how crazy more people care about a church burning than the actual rainforest that acts as the lungs of our whole planet
Thank you, a great video. We visited in Oct 2022 and saw scaffolding and a blackened exterior, so this video is really heartening. Great to see so much progress.
It was a shock to all of us, not just to the French and to Catholics, to see the destruction to the Notre Dame. It is heartening and exciting to see it rising from the ashes and becoming a great symbol once again to the ages. 💖
I was up on the hill behind our house ,working in our garden . My daughter came running up the lane crying saying Notre Dame was burning. We dropped to our knees to pray right there under the sky. We thought surely it was the beginning of the end of the world . So glad to see the restoration underway. It is a landmark for the whole world! Pennsylvania, USA.
Beautiful! I was saddened to hear that Notre Dame was on fire, and the destruction that the fire caused. But then the beauty of the people donating to help rebuild! Wonderful, better yet is the care that they took to repair the church better than it was before, all the while keeping it the same! I’m excited for the French. So I subscribed to this site just to hear about and see the renewal of the church.
Notre Dame is a Catholic Cathedral, but it is much more. It defines so much that is good about both Paris and France. To me it also represents what it means in both history and Western Civilization as a whole. It is why the fire affected so many people around the world emotionally. It represents the best of us as a people.
In 1979, at the age of 14, I visited Paris on a school trip and entered Notre Dame on Easter Sunday. I was heartbroken to see it burn down. I am so glad to see such dedication to restore it. Vive la Cathédrale!
An excellent video detailing the complexity and beauty and importance that the Notre Dame Cathedral has in our own lives. It represents history, creativity, Faith and Our Commitment to the past, present and future.
I'm not religious, but really don't understand all of the atheists who were so against rebuilding it. Who cares if it's a religious building, it's a HISTORIC building and a BEAUTIFUL building. You don't need to be religious to appreciate those things.
I doubt atheists would really care. Most atheists, while not believing in the existence of God or gods, aren't actively wanting to destroy churches. Please don't create drama where there is no drama. Creating drama and wanting to destroy other religions is a Christian, Judaism, Islamic, Muslim pastime amongst themselves. Atheists don't care about your judgemental superiority battles. Notre Dame is an architectural treasure, and I hope it lasts throughout the history of man. But all of man's historical constructions will fall with time, let's keep them intact as long as we can.❤
For once a terrible tragedy happens and it fills me with hope and a sense of positivity regarding the future of our society. It's fantastic to see thousands of people and large corporations band together to actually accomplish a goal without any signs of greed or manipulation taking place. I'm so happy that they decided to respect the original form of the cathedral and that it's been getting some much needed attention and respect from a wider community. If only it didn't take a disaster to bring people together in this way more often.
I may be agnostic, I haven't gone to church since I was 9 but the Notre Dame fire was a tragedy on a historical and architechtural level, I am glad the restoration is going well.
It’s absolutely beautiful . I visited it in 1997 and was in awe of it. All of Europe’s cathedrals and incredible . I was so sad when it burnt . Rescuing this incredibly beautiful piece of history deserves all countries helping bring it back to life . I would give anything to be able to go back to Paris and see the finished cathedral ,sadly I can’t travel these days and it’s a bit of a hike from Sydney Australia to France
Well, if the cathedral wasn't to be repaired, there would have been an insurrection. Was almost the case already around 1840. I didn't visit Notre Dame, but visited the one in Strasbourg. Which is registered as a World Heritage at UNESCO too. And then there is the one in Chartres, equally registered at the UNESCO. And some more are. 45 sites are registered as a World Heritage at the UNESCO in France alone. While Notre Dame is indeed special, it is not as special as many foreigners tend to think. Even Germany has some great churches. Although many disappeared during WWII. And then, there is the Sagrada Familia in Spain, and the Westminster Abbaye in the UK.

Very interesting video. Notre Dame is more than a cathedral. It, like the British monarchy, is an enduring symbol of Western Culture and history. Even though I have never been to France and will never visit in this lifetime, I still cannot imagine the world without Notre Dame.
I visited Notre Dame in the 1980s climbing the winding stairs to visit the gargoyles on the roof. It's an impressive and beautiful structure with a storied history. I was shocked and saddened when I watched it burn. I'm an American, and I'm not a religious person, but I recognize the importance of Notre Dame in history and to France and the world. I knew it would come back more beautiful than ever. Notre Dame gives testament to the past, and it lives again to inspire its congregation and the world.
Yes, yes, that's exactly what happened, thank you for this full report. "A fire 'broke out', that's just perfectly reported, "...'just broke out' It is comforting that we all remember this salient point, let's just keeping walking peope, nothing to see here. No worries, just move along and all will be well. And remember above all, diversity is our greatest strength.
The only modern changes are non aesthetic from what I can tell. They're more in the techniques used to secure and protect the building, and they're minimal. Theoretically, when it's done, it'll just be a cleaner version of its former self. They can't fake centuries of visitors and environmental degradation to the timbers, but they can reproduce most of the methods and aesthetics used in initial construction. That said, I really hope I'm right... if they decide to "upgrade" the look anywhere on that treasure, they'll be doing a terrible disservice.
@@oldblinddarby2498 I wouldn't even mind a moden take on the roof. In my eyes, this tragic event should not just be brushed over. As long as it is not one of the "hypermodern" things that everyone but the architects hate.
I was on the other side of France the day of the fire, and it was a great shock. We went into a cathedral in the other French city, and prayed for the safety of the workers and the recovery of the cathedral.
It will re-open in December, 8th 2024 BUT exterior work will continue till ~2030 to repair / renovate / change the stone from the chorus (back of the cathedral) : we are talking of exterior arc-boutants and Pilars which have to be reinforced and renovated.
this tragedy shocked me...but I express my greatest respect for this renovation, the details provided in this identical renovation are considerable; the stones come from the same quarries, the wood from the same forests, the cement from the same gravel pits, .... everything has been redone with the same accuracy and with the same ancestral methods... it's absolutely incredible, the best craftsmen of France and even sometimes other countries have carried out unique work which will remain at least as long as the 800 years of existence of Notre Dame! it's incredible to see that the know-how had not been forgotten. God bless France, the French and Notre Dame de Paris! because even if I am not French, this unique and sumptuous cathedral, a heritage of human history, had to be preserved, it is also a little bit mine, a bit of mine, of all of us. thanks god !
The amount of artistry and science that went into the original Stained Glass Windows is amazing. NOVA has a very good documentary about them and the entire process used making them, from start to finish during those times that's very inclusive and detailed. Definitely Worth A Watch!
I had my own version of "Paris in April" when I experienced Notre-Dame in 1980. The structure is magnificent and the stained glass windows are breathtaking. To walk the bell tower stairs, that have been worn down by millions of people over the centuries, left me in awe. Don't ever take this treasure for granted.

As a retired commercial builder my hat is off to all who have been working on this restoration , especially the scaffolding contractor. The dense yellow smoke during the fire appeared to be vaporized lead from the roof. What an abatement project that alone must have been around the city.
It was decided to rebuild exactly the same with the same materials as at the time. For lead, a rainwater retention basin is built to clean this water. As for the rest, apart from another fire, other than going to lick the roof with your tongue two or three times a day, the risks are zero.
It was truly heartbreaking to watch Notre Dame burn on live TV, especially when the steep hill folded over and collapsed in flames. I'm not religious, but felt empathy for the people who saw the building as a place of worship as well as a stunning piece of beautiful architecture. I'll never get to see Notre Dame myself, but it's reassuring to know that it'll be seen and appreciated in all its glory for generations to come. ❤
Notre Dame in a way, belongs to us all. It is a celebration of humanity’s ability to produce something greater than all of us and that transcends history. It gives us all hope in something that lasts longer than our short lives. It unites the generations, the people of all countries and the human spirit.
That they love opulent and lavish buildings? Funny looking hats on the leaders and opulent buildings are the two things I see across nearly all the various supernatural religions. Supernaturalism aside, it's a beautiful building.
@@mryan4452 From the outside,, it's very ordinary, fine, but ordinary, the sheer antiquity of the building is what draws you in. And that antiquite tells you that it is an expression of the Christian church. What Catholicism has to do with it is a question that to avoid ridicule, is best ignored.

President Emanuel Macron comes in for a lot of stick in France - that's the inevitability of a Republic. It's the same in another major Republic - the laughingly called 'United States' of America. My observation is that your very personal view that M Macron "is truly despicable" is not shared by millions of people in other countries, looking in on you.

There was never any doubt about restoring one of the most iconic and important buildings in France. All the nonsense about this building being destroyed was media hype, many of Europe’s great Cathedrals were severely damaged in WW2 are were subsequently restored.

I do and I’m blown away🌹
I agree with you also. Totally amazing what everyone has done for Notre Dame. What a blessing.
That's what Faith is all about!
So sad but so much has been learned about its construction!❤❤
My grandson visited as part of his senior High School class trip and after they left, on their way to the next stop, they saw that Notre Dame was on fire! He, along with his classmates, were among the last people to view it before the devastation! 😢
I can understand the feelings. As I was watching on my portable, I saw the beginning of the smoke at the corner of my left eye on CNN (there was no sound, but I was dumbfounded). During the First World War, one of the statues at the Arc de Triomphe suddenly cracked and lost a part, around the same time as the battle of Verdun.
A coincidence?

Notre Dame is a Catholic Cathedral, but it is much more. It defines so much that is good about both Paris and France. To me it also represents what it means in both history and Western Civilization as a whole. It is why the fire affected so many people around the world emotionally. It represents the best of us as a people.

I’m not a religious person and yet I really appreciate the help and contribution of so many people to restore Notre Dame. To me, it’s not just a religious place, it’s one of the great marvels on earth, like the Pyramids, or the Great Wall of China, or the Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Liberty, the Wailing Wall, Mecca, Mount Rushmore, etc… it’s the making of civilizations and the joy of tourists that visit such place, people from all religions, or even no religion at all.
President Emanuel Macron comes in for a lot of stick in France - that's the inevitability of a Republic. But he's a fine man, and the instant grip that he got on this project cannot be underestimated. He gave them only 5 years to restore this complex building - and wouldn't take 'not possible' as an answer. And they've done it! Chapeau, M'sieur le Président!
