What's your favorite building in France?
Catedral St Denise
Saint Chapelle, definitely in Paris, but France? Not just a building but a collection that makes up a whole. Le Mont Saint-Michel. So other worldly to me.
The La Hague nuclear fuel processing plant. Nothing against nice architecture, I just hate greens.
The Sainte Chapelle. When I first walked up the stairs into the upper chapel- it took my breath away.
In person Sainte Chapelle is an overwhelming, gloriously breathtaking space.
It just may be one of the most luminous, ethereal places on earth.
I saw the Sainte Chapelle 56 years ago, and I still distinctly remember emerging from that narrow spiral staircase into the sublime radiance above. It was awe-inspiring, it was wondrous, it was -- well, unforgettable. Thank you, Manuel! You researched this building of marvels much more deeply than I did, and, with your help, I can now re-live and expand upon my impression of that day long ago.
I was a fifteen year old girl on a school trip from Cornwall, more interested in boys than architecture of any kind when we were taken to Sainte La Chapelle. I was stunned by its beauty, by the colours and the light everywhere I looked. I never believed that could ever be captured on film, but you have come as close to perfect as anyone ever could. Well done and thank you for the pleasure it gives me to watch it again and again.
Same wordsmith! 25 years ago and I was just saying the same to a friend only a few weeks ago. That glass! I’m amazed you were able to catch that sense of awe & wrap around kaleidoscopic light Manuel, merci & bravo.
The most... beautiful... magical... stunning... wonderful... umbelievable... building in Paris.
So true. The first time I went, it was late afternoon--we were getting ready to leave and a docent told us to wait a few minutes. "Have a seat over there..." A few minutes later, the lights were turned off and the windows lit up. Before, I thought the building was amazing... I had no words when the lights were off. it was stunning.
I would give this comment a thousand up votes if I could. It's the most magical spot in Paris...and I'm atheist! You would have to be without sight to not be moved by its beauty.
My favourite church in Paris. The most wonderful stained glass I have ever seen and I have seen Notre Dame, Chartres and St Peter’s. A hidden gem. I never go to Paris without going here.
I Agree. A spectacular display of light.
Amazing to see the ancient stained glass looking so brilliant. It was removed and placed into safe storage during WW2, and its restoration was only completed in 2015. Photographing each wall in perfect lighting conditions was a triumph in itself.
I haven’t been able to find anything about the stained glass being removed and placed into safe storage during WW2. What I _did_ find was that the restoration took place over a seven-year period ending in 2015 to coincide with the 800th anniversary of the birth of King Louis IX, who commissioned the chapel.
According to _Forbes,_ “…over 6,000 square feet of stained glass were removed, piece by piece, and analyzed with the precision of laser technology in order to determine the best way to remove what is known as ‘Paris Crust.’” No wonder the stained glass looks so dazzlingly luminescent!
This is my favorite gothic building in Paris
I saw Mozart's Requiem in the basement by a chamber orchestra and choir. Utterly magical.
I'm so jealous.
I visited Sainte Chapelle when I was young and it is still one of the most memorable buildings I have visited. When you emerge from the staircase and all around you the stained glass the windows let in the light. It is incredible.
La Sainte Chapelle is the most breath taking gothic building I have ever seen. The medieval description that you quoted near the end is spot on IMO. What a beautiful, informative video. Thank you!
The Sainte Chapelle was the most impressive site that I visited in Paris.
I visited Sainte Chappelle but your narrative enriches the experience, thank you.
Great description it’s a magical visit and your description is very clear and makes me want to visit again
The glass in Sainte Chapelle is so breathtaking in person. Hands down, it is my favorite gothic building.
When I was a child I said it was like being inside a paperweight- one of the antique ones with rich colors. As many have mentioned, it is a jewel box. Breathtaking. Lovely film. Thank you!
Outstanding video of a beautiful place
I was just googling this place yesterday. Absolutely breathtaking
Manuel Bravo you are a brilliant presenter full of enthusiasm and excellent communication skills. It's a dream for me to get a quality tour of this beautiful chapel that I've been to twice. Thank you so much! You are contributing to world culture. Keep up the good work. Subscribed. ❤
Merci! You taught me many things I did not know. Was there in 2012 and want to revisit.
Just an exceptional video. Thanks for this one, Manuel. This chapel is on my bucket list for sure.
Magnifique !!! Merci beaucoup !
Being in Sainte Chapelle is like being in Heaven.
Have you been in heaven?
@@lalero88 it must be the same sensation. P.S What a poor response! Maybe you don't have a real connection with Art.
La Sainte Chapelle is a marvel. I have visited it many times and I never tire of its magnificence
The Saint Chapelle is not just another building, it’s the culmination of Louis IX’s Reign
🎉
when emerging in the upper Chapel, a lot of people have instantly tears in the eyes !
Manuel does these sorts of videos better than anyone. Well researched, lots of detail, but not so much as to bog it down. Well written and even better spoken. Excellent photography and a great use of models. I love his work. I've watched them all and am always impatient for the next one.
And this didn't disappoint. Bravo: Manuel Bravo!
The colourful languagevof the presenter really dresses up the explanation of each element ❤
another great video, manuel! can’t wait for the next one!
Hermosa descripción. Gracias!
Simply amazing description !!
Wonderful video, as always. When inside, with the morning light streaming through the exquisite colored panels of glass, it is breathtaking to behold. Such a treasure, but not seen by the sheer numbers of tourists as Notre Dame, but maybe the fire changed that.
Staggeringly gorgeous and moving. When I was there I never wanted to leave.
Same!
As usual, another great video. I always look forward to seeing you new videos.
I've been to Paris many times over the years but didn't know about this - beautiful & fascinating! I hope to be in Paris this Autumn and will definitely see - Thanks!
Hermoso video, Manuel. Saludos desde México.
Gran Trabajo, investigación, redacción,edición y producción Manuel! Felicidades!
Verdaderamente Admirable tus trabajos!
I fervently hope this amazing structure and its mind blowing windows never be destroyed.
Excellent! Thanks for posting. San Chappelle is one of the most beautiful places on earth
Wonderful place, and wonderful video. You perfectly describe what this monument is!
Twice I've had my breath literally taken away by a place: when I first saw the Grand Canyon, and when I saw the stained glass in the upper floor of Sainte Chapelle. In both cases, video only gives you a taste; you must BE there. Royalty really did save the best for themselves.
Guess ill have to go to grand canyon then ! Even if it will be hard as i live so far. Im parisien And have visited la saint chapelle many Times, And it still amazes me.
Majestuoso y hermoso ✨
I was there In 2013 and was awed by the beautiful stained glass. It was magical. The day we were there there was a concert ..Vivaldis four seasons. It was simply beautiful.
Beautiful! Thank you!
This Chapelle was incredible I got chills when I was there it’s Heavenly
You always provide a wonderful experience.
incredible video as always
Beautiful and informative video Manuel. Well done on the forms of Gothic art. Bravo all round!
Me ha encantado el texto en latín :)
Thanks!🎉
An excellent video - thank you so much
I've been enthralled by 2 visits to this wonder and learned so much by Manuel's video! Your stuff is terrific, thanks for the great work. So many people miss this gem when visiting Paris; it is simply sublime.
Great episode ! ! ! !
Muy buen video como siempre!!!
Great content!!
Excellent video - thank you
Thank you for the explanation. I have numerous photos from my visit.
It is a wonder to behold!
Thanks for taking so much better shots, because when I was in there I could only see these stained glass in a much much smaller form just because of the sheer height.
Wow, I must go here to experience this. I love stained glass, and this is on another level!
Thank you so much for this thoroughly enjoyable and informative presentation. And thank you for including Jean de Jandun's original latin.
😃 Wonderful! 😃
Crowns of thorns and timber salesman would be thrilled with that sale.
Thank you. I wish I had seen this before I toured the Chapel, oh so many moons ago.
Excellent . Well Done . I love Sainte Chapelle . Ivisited many years back. What is the best way to visit today, how do we obtain tickets and what is the cost?
Bellísimo 😊
very informative video thank you. btw you amazingly look much younger in the video 😮 I would like to know your skin care routine as well
Crazy how France made a whole church for Chapelle, really cool how they appreciate comedy so much.
most of the relics in Constantinople were plundered by the Latin crusaders during the 4th Crusade, later showing up all over Europe.
I wish we could see the building process. It must have been extraordinary without any of the machinery we have today.
Deuteronomy 6:10. Man did not build it.
@@bethmartof1262 Man most definitely built the Saint-Chapelle...! Just because you personally can't imagine someone building such a marvelous work of art doesn't mean that skilled artisans, architects, and engineers over a long period of time can't. What's next? The Burj Khalifa is secretly built by aliens or something?
Manuel, have you done this version in Spanish? In order to show to my mother
I wonder if they ever clean the glass. It must be even more revelatory then. Like the Sistine Chapel ceiling after a cleaning.
4:59 - What's with the front porch?
As soon as you said "restored in the 1840s" I thought "it looks like that? Le Duc worked on it." Now I wonder what it really looked like in 1260.
Another incredible video. I learned a lot and enjoyed very much. Bravo 🕍🙏🙌🕍
Must see.
One of the 3 “must-sees” in Paris: Sainte-Chapelle, Orangerie, Tour Eiffel.
Is it possible we could get some videos focusing on Constantinople/Istanbul?
Would love to hear you talk about the Theodosian walls or the Hagia Sophia at some point :D
10:50. The relics are not in the chapel anymore, but they were not lost. As of date, they are in the Louvre, after the Notre Dame fire. More details in the Wikipedia article "Relics of Sainte-Chapelle." ⛪
Were the relics also lost in the revolution?
Some of the kings of France sold some of the relics because they needed the money. There are still a few of the original relics including the crown of thorns, and they were stored at Notre Dame before the fire in 2019. Now they’re at the Louvre.
🙏🙏🙏🌟
Louis IX’s 3D House of Evil makes my stomach turn.
The stained glass is stunning... I understand the reason you put forth for the spire on top, but personally I wish it weren't there. It feels out of balance with the rest of the Building.
😮
Good video, but I rather think it's reliquaries that mimic cathedrals, not the other way around.
how old is that glass? It cant be really from 13.th century?
About 70% of the glass is from the 13th century, the rest is from the 19th century.
✨💗✨
❤
Who built them?
Never appreciated medieval craftsmanship more
Is there no organ?
Shappel anyone ?
