    I hope that if they ever try to complete it now, it won't be 3D animation because those concept art pieces are gorgeous!!

      +Jennifer Lewis I know if Andreas Deja has anything to say about it it'll be 2D because he's always talked about how much he loved the concept art and wants to see it fully animated

    Such a tragic tale of Chanticleer...
    So far, I like this project and it's interesting to see ideas created by Walt himself

    I find the whole "you can't make a thief a hero" thing ironic in hindsight with the likes of Aladdin, Flynn, Nick Wilde and Robin Hood all being thieves, but still being likable.
    I agree; you can make a thief or a less then noble character likable in a lot of different ways, mainly giving other traits to latch on to, giving them honest bond with some of the characters and giving a reason why they are that way. Not only that, I think something like this could work more now, considering people now love anti heroes when they are done well like Prince Zuko and the like than they did in Walt's time. We know it can since there's a lot of Disney characters now that fit under that umbrella. I still swear Nick Wilde is like Chanticleer reincarnated.

      Kuzco proves you can make a character who is an absolute ass and still likeable.

    • @asalways1504

      I agree with you 100%,but allow me to play devil's advocate. Making a protagonist who's a jerk is a very tricky task to pull off, because when you do it is VITAL to give them some form of connection that's relatable to audiences and let them learn from their mistakes and evolve. That way, your main character won't come off as annoying or intolerable.
      TL;DR: Audiences should like a character DESPITE of being a jerk, not BECAUSE they are one.

      Out of all of them, I couldn't fucking stand Nick. Too much of a mean-spirited cocksure asshole,and his backstory is way too overly dramatic to justify him taking up a life of crime. Doesn't help that Judy is just as hideously obnoxious with her primadonna attitude.

    Personally my favorite lost Disney film would be the first draft of "the Emperor's New Groove" called "Kingdom of the Sun." Got to see some concept art during a lecture on character design in college (and like a dork I didn't sneak a pic) and ever since I've been obsessed with finding bits and pieces that were finished.
    So if ya ever wanna cover that, I'd love to see it. And I can direct you to some scattered concept art/animation I've found (and the banned documentary on it).

    Ironically, Chanticleer did manage to squeek through the confines of the Disney On Parade arena tours from 1971-1976 before the tour rested and regenerated into Disney On Ice five years later

    There was a project called the search for Mickey Mouse that was at the time going to be disney's 50th film but was cancelled and we got tangled instead. I remember reading something about it years ago in the 2000s and it said that the movie would be about Mickey going missing and Minnie hiring....and this was the best part to me...basil from the great mouse detective to help her and the others find him.not sure why it was cancelled but oh man the idea seemed interesting and fun to me. Mickey and basil back on the big screen...and together no less.

    • @JoeTheDisneyGuy

      @@CarolinaMouse That's a shame, cause I would have loved to see Basil and Mickey work together to solve a case. Chances are, unless they find a good vocal replacement, the death of Barrie Ingham, Basil's voice, in January 2015 means that we may never see this realized.

  • @SirBlackReeds

    The reason for that moniker is because Chanticleer would have been years ahead of its time. It would have been a Broadway-style animated musical. I wonder if he'd ever talk more about Rock-a-Doodle. That film went through a lot of changes.

      I agree! The politics behind the making is pretty juicy, and while "Bolt" was a decent film, it's still sad to never be able to see another product from its original concept. I've done a bit of research on that topic a couple of months ago, scrounging up a bit of information but not a whole lot more than what we already know about it and that's not enough of what I wanted to know more about. The reason why I didn't suggest it in my own comment previously is because I believe there was another comment below who suggested it. Still, I appreciate your reply! I love how people can get a conversation going like this.

    I definitely wish this Disney would return to this idea somewhere down the line. This would make a better film than the crap Don Bluth released. No offense to him since he created Secret of NIMH, Land Before Time, and American Tale, but that movie…is awful.

    Wonderful job, recently I heard about this project and immediatelly call my atention! Its a shame what this never become a full animated movie. Personally I thing this deserve become a story but how I see disney has already planned what movies will do, I think this can work how a miniseries. If cartoon network can do "over the garden wall" what is a really good series. I sure Disney could make a good miniseries about Chanticleer. That definitively would be hundreds of time better what their actual crapy live action sitcoms, Disney do actually.

    Ah, Rock-A-Doodle, possibly my biggest nostalgia fulled guilty pleasure. ( right after Thief and the Cobbler; shameful I know) It's something to do with the voice actors for that movie. Their performances have just enough charm to make me really enjoy their nonsensical journey.

Phil Harris as Patoo the dog who had trouble tying his shoes, Mandark's voice actor as Snipes the claustrophobic magpie, Christopher Plumber as the Grand Duke of Owls, the voice of Killer from _All Dogs Go to Heaven_ as the Duke's comedic nephew Hunch with a distinct speech pattern, late country legend Glen Cambell as Chanticleer, his saucy girlfriend being inspired by Goldie Hawn, etc.

    Interesting idea for a series. You could do a lot with it. As far as Chanticleer goes, I'd love to see a revival of it, maybe even with a return to traditional animation. As much as I love Don Bluth, his version was definitely less than stellar. I'd love to see what modern Disney could do with the story.

    I'm a fan of Disney and of your channel and I wanted to say that my well has hit me the story of this lost film, however I remember reading that had discarded because had to go out in the year 1963 with the sword in the stone, but not having the funding for the film, i have scartarto, perhaps they chose the sword in the stone because it was easier to animate humans instead of humans. Anyway I can not wait to see your videos hello and good work!

I'm a Disney Villain guy so seeing all the parks dec'd for Halloween with villains everywhere is totally my bag. I'll get to stay at Port Orleans: French Quarter which features the alligators from Fantasia (my favorite Disney film) pretty prominently. I'm so effing excited. Anyway, please keep the series up . A Disney connoisseur like yourself will really dig it. Thanks again Joe.

But I can't hate the movie. I would love to see Disney take a shot at it though. A lot of the same stories have been told in various movies and Disney is remaking a lot of their animated movies into live action.

    This isn't a request, just a little Disney Trivia.
    There were plans to make a movie based on the Voyage of Christopher Columbus with Mickey, Donald, and Goofy being the captains of the Pinta, Mina, and Santa Maria respectively.
    However the story was never made as the crew didn't know what to do when they actually got to the new world.
    Yeah a film where Mickey Mouse gives Indians smallpox doesn't sound that good.

    • @BigBossMan538
      @BigBossMan538 8 років тому

      I believe that there was another Mickey Mouse feature in production at some point in time. It would've involved Donald and Goofy looking for him with the help of Basil from The Great Mouse Detective as they interacted with other Disney characters such as Alice, Peter Pan, Robin Hood, and Aladdin.

  • @92JazzQueen
    @92JazzQueen 8 років тому

    One thing about Disney is they will always come back to a concept, once a new generation figures out how to get the story right or has the money to back the project. In the case of Chanticleer, I think the company in these days would have the right amount of money in order to get the project off the ground. Although after Zootopia, I do have a feeling they would be reluctant about having a fox as a villain due to having a film that deconstructs animal stereotypes.

    • @JoeTheDisneyGuy
      @JoeTheDisneyGuy  8 років тому

      Though I don't know if we'll ever see Chanticleer in it's true form, at least from Disney, I think you're right in that Disney never truly let's a concept go to waste. I certainly saw a lot of the Chanticleer project in Zootopia, so I have to imagine that one, at least in part, helped inspire the other

    • @92JazzQueen
      @92JazzQueen 8 років тому +2

      I mean look at Snow Queen, Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid, etc. Or a more recent example of Wreck It Ralph, which as a concept has been floated around since the later 1980's with the original title called High Score. Tons of projects that were always in and out of development hell until someone managed to figure out how the story could work. It would be nice to see a CGI version of Chanticleer, and get the tale introduced to a new generation. Although our generation probably will forever associate Chanticleer with Don Bluth's divisive movie, Rock A Doodle, forever. I can say you can tell that Mr. Bluth got a lot of his inspiration from that movie from old concept art from the Disney project.

    Great video as usual! Frozen showed us that finally completing a constantly avorted project can be worth the while, so why not this movie? Also, did you already see Zootopia? Absolute amazing movie.

      Hah, hell to the fuck no ! Frozen showed us what happens when you leave a bunch of SJW to butcher a perfectly good story with their "subversive" agenda. Frozen made money only because of good marketing and songs. But it was a shit movie.
      And so was Zootopia.

    Maybe Chanticleer can be a sequel to zootopia where it can be about a city of birds

      Sounds nice, although I thought about this. What if they make it a TV special; with Nick & Judy at the beginning to tell the story, as it could be about Judy questioning Chanticleer's tale as silly nonsense? How can a Rooster's crow raise the sun?

    I think these videos and brilliant and breath of fresh air from all the hyperbole reviews out there. If you just had a better camera and a slightly more appealing screen cap to draw people in, i think you could easily double or triple views.

    Have you ever heard of the Donald Duck cartoons Mother Goose Goes Hollywood (though he is barely in it) and The Autograph Hound? Oddly enough, both feature Charlie McCarthy, Katharine Hepburn, Clark Gable, Greta Garbo, and others.
