  • At long last, it's time to look at one of Disney's darkest, and ultimately one of their least successful animated films. Let's take a look at the troubled history of The Black Cauldron

To be fair, modern Disney could really use a shot of 'Dark' right about now.

I would say a few modern Disney films are dark in a thematic way. Zootopia for its look at societal racism.

Dean Weiss there's a difference between dark and touching up on dark. modern Disney films don't really go into dark places and kind of just touch up on the subject and move on and sometimes it becomes the argument with people on what they were hitting. incredibles 2 was good and had some dark surprises but in turn you'll notice how people turn that into feminist propaganda. aside from that one a lot of recent Disney movies have an entirely predictable element where you already know who's gonna be the bad guy or antagonist from a point that's kinda clear but not entirely.
true they are by definition successful but the one common factor they all have in the reviews everyone has given is they all have the predicable villain formula where they don't really take the kind of chances black cauldron, rescuers, rescuers down under, and other renonssance era Disney movies had. those were flawed too but they had the more interesting and memorable villains and again even though black cauldron was a flop the horned king is still more memorable than modern Disney villains.
you do need the right amount of dark on these films you just need the right kind of pacing and story telling. if anything ever needed a reboot it would be this film to tell the story as it should be told at least by Disney standards. the live action reboots have this problem too. they try to be dark yet modernized but that's missing the whole point of what the originals tried to do. a little modernizing or alterations is fine but you can't let affect the overall narrative.

Modern Disney movies aren't predictable, certainly not nearly as predictable as older ones, even many from the 90s.
Other than the villains, what do you find predictable? That was the only example you gave.
And the villains aren't even predictable, all of the recent twists have been gorgeously written (King Candy is my favorite Disney villain of all time) and so unique to themselves, besides Zootopia's. But even then, even though that twist wasn't written well, it still wasn't predictable-it wasn't easy to tell that she would become the villain.
Aside from that, what's an example of them sacrificing narrative for the sake of modernizing something? Disney's biggest problem as a company is NOT modernizing anything and staying stuck in the past.
It's laughable to say that the older Disney movies too more risks than modern ones, and it's downright nonsense to say the characters were more memorable. Older Disney had some good villains, sure, but the quality of the characters was severely, severely lacking, which is why I don't like older Disney that much. The only older Disney movies that could possibly compete with the more recent ones are The Lion King, Lilo and Stitch, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Beauty and the Beast. (I haven't seen the Emperor's New Groove, Atlantis or Treasure Planet so who knows maybe them too). I'm not saying there aren't other good Disney movies, but to compare them with the ones coming out today... I'm sorry, but that's just blind nostalgia talking.

Agreed. Since Renaissance, they have been on a sugar binge, bright colors and overly positive, feel good, and safe. Of course, it's Disney, but there aren't really any mainstream alternatives offering anything with a different tone/mood. In the 80s, there was ex-Disney Don Bluth/Amblin also producing darker themed animated films.

I’m very split on the Black Cauldron. One the one hand it’s obvious there were too many cooks going in too many directions with a crew that wasn’t ready for a film like this. On the other John Hurts horn King is great and some of the animation is impressive. This is one of those films that should be remade, bug it’d take a very talented director and writer to do it. I have not read the books so I don’t know what is supposed to stay and what can go

    • @Talarue

The Black Cauldron essentially took a selection of the characters, and world pieces and events from the first couple of books. Simplified or changed them, and then made a movie from them. Then named the movie after the second book.
To give you a few examples of how much they simplified a few characters:
Fflewdur Fflam - In the books was a bard that was a kind of bad bard but a brave(and competent) warrior and loyal friend. He also had an issue with "putting a little color on the truth." This was one of the few characteristics they preserved including his harp that snaps a string every time he lies(and more than one at times). However his harp basically plays itself so that makes up for fact that he is a mostly incompetent musician. Also in the books he is portrayed as more of an impetuous young man rather than an old duffer. Oh he is also a king by the way.
Gurgi - In the books while his size is not explicitly stated he is generally comparable to Taran in size. He starts out as a bit of a sniveling coward, but by the end of the first book is essentially a selfless, brave, and competent warrior as well as a loyal friend. This was probably the least cheated character but was very different in overall feel nonetheless.
Eilonwy - They turned the eccentric quirky heir of the great magic of Llyr into just a generic character. She was amazing, bizarre, and genuinely hilarious character. I cannot express my saltiness on how dumbed down she was.
Doli - Along with the rest of the fair folk got completely shafted. The only things he has in common with his actual character are name and grumpiness, and I think an ability to turn invisible(can't remember if they included this or not).
Removed major characters(a sampling not a comprehensive list that would take too long):
Prince Gwydion - A core complex character they straight up removed.
Coll - While has a minor roll in the first 2 books is basically a father figure for Taran.
Arawn - The actual main villain.
Achren - Eilonwy's Aunt. At different times in the series an antagonist and ally to the group. Very nuanced and well written character.
Ellidyr - Can't describe this character without major spoilers for the second book.
If you have the time I would highly recommend picking up the series. They are a pretty quick read. If they do decide to remake the series I hope they give each book its own movie. i would love to see that. Not sure if it is the best idea for a kids cartoon. The books get pretty... violent.

My 2 cents, there was a great idea here, but it was executed poorly. Without the production hiccups and executive meddling, this could have been something original and groundbreaking. So many circumstances generated a perfect storm to make this film a shell of its potential. It is my dearest wish that if Disney is bent on remaking selections of the animated canon in live action, they take a swing at this one. For the love of Mickey and Donald, remake something that you can actually IMPROVE! I double dog dare you Disney. Make a better Black Cauldron.

    Very good video.
For the record, the FairFolk were not the biggest victims of the film's 12 minute shave, it is stated in multiple accounts of the animators that entire sequences were shuffled around, re-written and completely re-done in spite of most of the animators agreeing that most of the time these changes were for the worse.
The Fairfolk scene was completely replaced so it doesn't account for the ammount of cuts, the reveal of the Horned King is actually a scene that plays later in the movie, and the gory violent stuff is merely a fraction of the deleted content, most of them being guess what, actual character development.

Dennis You are absolutely right, my friend. Now, if Katzenberg had just left this movie alone and let the animators do their jobs, I don't think this movie would be as big of a hit as say, Beauty and the Beast or The Lion King, but it definitely would have been spared from bombing.

I had actually read the Chronicles of Prydain prior to the release of the Black Cauldron film and found that it failed both as a Disney movie and as an adaptation of those books. You are right that the characters who had been so interesting to me in the books just came out a little limp here. Yes, the characters should be in over their heads, but the way they were portrayed made them seem like they would in over their heads if they had been trying to complete a trip to the grocery store. If you don't respect your central characters it's hard to feel like they speak or act for you. These people seemed like they were just victims of their surroundings who somehow managed to survive cataclysm despite being mostly incompetent. A big disappointment.

    • @JoeTheDisneyGuy
      @JoeTheDisneyGuy  6 років тому +3

Yeah, of course adaptations to film are always difficult and Disney, to their credit, had some success in the past with just sorta taking the characters and making their own story (i.e. Jungle Book). But when you strip elements from the characters AND the story? It becomes problematic

Another great video Joe :). I am not the biggest fan of the film, but my heart goes out Gurgi. You are right he is the main hero of the story. It is interesting to look at the history behind the film. Comparing it to the next Snow White I think was the wrong way to go. Another problem I find right out of the gate is trying to adapt a series part book series which might have been to much from a storytelling pov. Snow White was a simple story at its heart so it was a lot easier to mold it into a story.

    • @JoeTheDisneyGuy
      @JoeTheDisneyGuy  6 років тому +2

Thank you! And yeah, remember, Snow White was chosen partially BECAUSE it was a simple story. Disney had success with taking a story or a conglomeration of a story from a book series in the past, such as The Rescuers, but when you're trying to adapt something as complicated as The Chronicles of Prydain, you almost have to make a choice: faithful adaptation or just a strong original movie loosely based on the source material. Unfortunately neither really happened here, so you alienated fans of the series and just average moviegoers alike

They messed up a lot of scenes in the edits. Not only did they cut 12 minuets out but many scenes are out of order and lines are. Some of the animations had glitches and skippy repeated frames because they edited out too much. Out of the gore scenes that only cut out 3 minuets, and the rest of the 9 minuets is story. I seen many of the plot points missed from the movie from story boards, and people have gotten the order correct and even managed to recover those scenes to almost former setup. Even in the movie there is a few frames where the storyboard images are visible. The horned king speaks the truth about her being a maid as he accurately describes all the characters. The fair folk actually had the least amount of editing outs. At 17:02 you can visibly view one of the pointless edits that removes smooth animation and repeats frames multiple times and actually edited out a far more impressive effect of the horned king that made it look more 3dish.

Just a very minor technical nitpick. The Black Cauldron and Sleeping Beauty were shot in Super Technirama 70, which actually used 35mm film (though run horizontally for a larger image). The 70 in the name refers to the fact that those films were printed onto 70mm film for projection (and the quality was pretty close to something actually shot on 70mm.)

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed Princess Eilonwy's obvious resemblance to Stevie Nicks? The hair, the clothing...everything. It makes sense, seeing as she was a major star when the film was released, as well as during the ten years leading up to it's release. I've always assumed that that was a deliberate move on the part of the younger animators, thinking it would catch people's attention in the posters and advertisements.

I saw it when I was 13 (the ideal target audience), and was surprisingly underwhelmed by it. Around this time (the mid-1980's) a LOT of films were made for the teenage audience (The Dark Crystal, Rock and Rule, Labyrinth, The Last Unicorn, Legend, et al) before studio heads realized that it wasn't a big market, and switched to films "for the whole family".

I think it's a really unique movie and that's why I love it because one part of the movie is happy and cheerful and then the other part of the movie is scary for most people back then. I really loved how they did all the artwork, it kinda gives me sleeping beauty vibes for the horned kings castle and elionwy looks exactly like princess aurora and Alice. My 1st favourite Disney film in my opinion I think it's the best

I was 15 in 1985 and don't even remember it being released. I saw it first on VHS in the late 90s because my friend collected Disney videos and purchased it. I saw it recently on Disney+ in full HD. Visually it is very impressive. I actually like the throwback animation style for the characters. I don't know what Tim Burton had in mind, but I suspect the classic Disney look is more to my preference. The thinly drawn characters are the downfall of the movie. I don't think extra time with the fairies would have done much.

Gurrky was voiced by veteran impressionist John Byner, btw.
And As noted by others, the film got its arse handed to it by the Care Bears movie. Another Disney film that would also get the Box Office smackdown two weeks after the Black Cauldron premiered was Return to Oz.

I thoroughly disagree with your assessment of the film's quality (I'm a big fan of the film, personally) but I can respect it because, unlike most Disney reviewers, you were actually fair to it and the review wasn't just a long rant about how bad you think the movie is. Also, you actually know what you're talking about when it comes to Disney history and putting the films in the proper context, which is something else the majority of Disney reviewers lack. So, hey, good job!

I liked it but I agree it was too fast and the characters could have been flashed out more. I have read the first book when I was a kid and remember it was very different from the book. Princess Eilonwy for example has a much bigger and active role. I think it was weird they changed it in the movie.

    I've always loved this film🖤
the studio's most sinister villain, voiced by none other than (the one&only)John Hurt... oh, well... 🤯
The dark, surreal style of animation works perfectly, imo, especially with the overall goth, medieval esthetics of the film. Both feel fresh&creative, while adding to the horror vibe😊
Finally,I like the story. It comes off as a mixture of various myths& tales, from Macbeth's weird sisters( possibly an homage to the Bard himself? 😜😁), king Arthur, theMiddle Earth Valhalla, all the way to the apocalypse itself🖤
I recommend this unique Disney film with all my🖤🔥🤯💣🌞

To me the black cauldron would have been Disney's most ambitious and memorable animated film but it was totally undermined by the needless censorship. The Chronicles of Prydain novels on which the movie is based on are children's books but they are also filled with frightening violent moments, some darker heavier themes, but ultimately an amazing example of high fantasy and a truly magical adventure. Had this movie been released in its original form they would have complimented the books so well because it's wonderfully dark and challenging material for kids. This film in its original form I feel would have mirrored the books in such a splendid way. I believe that the people who originally wrote the script and the screenplay for this movie had a very clear understanding of Lloyd Alexander's vision for his novels and wanted to recreate that same essence in the film. But I guess that's just not Disney. It just makes me sad that instead of conforming to the vision of the novels Disney had to make the novel's conform to their vision of a movie. It's just a shame, they could have captured lightning in a bottle. I hope that before I die I get to see this film in its originally intended, unedited and uncensored, form.

It's a shame they didn't do a good job with this film as I personally like that sort of dark fantasy and the experimental aspects of it. The Renaissance and since has gone the completely opposite direction, being extremely bright, colorful, happy, safe, etc. Like eating a bowl of the most colorful, highest sugar bowl of cereal every morning while listening to cheesy Broadway music in the background.

Actually I don't want to judge The Black Cauldron too harshly ,
Because it shows Disney want to steps out from comfort zone by adapting dark fantasy theme instead just relying on musical romance formula
If Disney could appointing this criminally underrated work as live action adaptation, I will simply applaud Disney for sure rather than playing safe by appointing high profile installment from Renaissance decade

Gonna be honest I loved this movie and still love it no matter how many flaws it has. I personally would like to see Disney try this film again but do it better. I know they probably won't because this is one of those situations where Disney likes to pretend this movie never happened like Song of the South (which I also didn't think was that bad) and Something Wicked This Way Comes (which I also enjoy)

Secret of NIMH wasn't so much the issue here. Disney made all the effort they could to squash the Secret of NIMH to get revenge on Bluth leaving by releasing Tron and ET at the same time and using their clout to insure NIMH was only released in about 100 theaters. NIMH was still barely profitable but it was really Bluth's next one, An American Tail (which is fantastic by the way), released after Black Cauldron when Disney really started taking Ls in the 80s

Boy, sorry you had to go through with this. As for me, I appreciate what they were trying to do with this and the animation is great, but it doesn’t work. You’re right, they’re just too many issues with the characters and stories. However, you thought you had it bad here, wait until you get to “Home on the Range”. That is THE absolute worst that’ll push you over the edge. But the good news is that things will get better after this, since the next one is not only great, but even comes with that word right in the name of this film.

  • @disneydork57

Sadly UA-cam failed to notify me when this was up so my comments are a little late this time.
I have a love/hate relationship with this movie. On the one hand the animation is superb, the world building is intriguing despite vague, and the climax at the end is one of the most outstanding things put to animation. The Horned King's death is the gruesomenest in Disney history which is a plus in my book.
But all the story problems you mentioned just drag the film down, and once you've read the actual books it becomes down right insultingly bad adaptation. Replacing interesting and three dimensional characters with bland cookie cutters, and Princess Eilonwy suffers the worst from this. In the books she's a badass sorceress who kicks all kinds of butt and doesn't give two shits about anything. Hilariously making light of serious situations by failing to worry about the bigger picture and complaining about petty annoyances instead. Had this story been released today feminists would have raked Disney across the coals with book Eilonwy being the first in line to drag them.
However I can't get too angry at The Black Cauldron because I never would have know about , let alone have read, the Prydain Chronicles if it wasn't for the movie. Said book series has gone on to become one my favorites of all time.
