Sebs, just a little story of how good a man Neil Diamond truly is: The Boston Red Sox chose his song "Sweet Caroline" as their 7th inning anthem. When first released it sold a couple of million copies. About ten years ago, a couple of assinine clowns decided to make a name for themselves by setting off bombs near the finish line for the Boston Marathon. The whole country was outraged, as it should be. The ashwholes were both caught and are now in prison. Neil, good man that he is, did his part. The first home game the Red Sox played after the bombing he attended to game and sang, in person, the anthem: Sweet Caroline. Needless to say, he gained a million more fans that day. He also donated all residuals for the song to the charity relief fund helping those people, and there were a lot of them, who were injured by the bombing. Neil showed where his heart is. Great man.

I agree. I find many of his live performances to be more shouting than singing, losing any nuance. Sometimes less is more.
My vote for best Neil Diamond song is Holly Holy. And again, the original recording.

Please, please react to a Neil Diamond song before he started losing his voice. Although he still has energy, the videos you've been watching don't do credit to the magnificence of his voice in his prime.

I’m old. Not only old enough to have seen Neil Diamond do this live, but old enough to have BEEN to a real travelling ‘salvation show’! Raised in an all white religious community AND in a family of musicians, one of my earliest memories is of a ‘tent meeting’. These were traveling evangelists who are perfectly portrayed in this song and with Diamond’s delivery of it. They sat up their huge canvas tents on farmland and would stay for several nights. The music was electric, the sermons hell fire and demons! I still remember one part of the sermon. I called my older sister a while back just to be sure my memory wasn’t dreaming it all up. She assured me I was right. How in hell did a nice Jewish boy from New York get this so spot on??? Would love to be able to ask Diamonds that. If you were impressed with that slice of a long past tradition, imagine what the entire event would have evoked. Growing up poor in the 40s had some magic that can’t ever be experienced again.

Seb, you just got a taste of the voice Neil Diamond had. For another performance to watch (of this song) I recommend the one he did at the BBC. Before the song he spoke of having attended a revival as a recent college graduate and really looking down on this revival thing. Then coming to an understanding of what it was about, and writing this song. Neil is one of those artists that is excellent in the studio, and even better in concert. It's not just the voice; he's a showman. He puts every ounce of energy into his performance, to the point that after Hot August Night, which was a live concert recording, he spent 3 days in hospital for exhaustion and dehydration. You could see a little taste of that in this performance. He was really unique and the world is better for it.

Yes! The “Soolaimon/Hot August Night” medley from the “Hot August Night” live double album (1972) - which, ironically, skips the first part of the song which starts off, “Hot August night and the leaves hangin’ down. . .” But what a performance. He was in his prime, the audience was pumped, and that album made his reputation as a top tier, dynamic performer. He had seemed a little shy earlier in his career, and after the concert one music critic said he had never seen him perform with such confidence. It was a game changer for Neil.

I have had the pleasure of going to several of his concerts and this man plays for a solid 2 1/2 to 3 hours only taking one short break for costume change. Incredible. He would have the entire audience up dancing and on their feet and then the next song just sitting mesmerized. True gift.

"Hot August Night" is one of the best live albums ever made. Neil visited several travelling preacher shows while he was growing up, and also worked in tin pan alley, so he's got the skills of both the travelling audience-grabber and a well-crafted-song writer. So many great songs - not just the big hits, but also lesser-known cuts like "Crunchy Granola Suite" and "Shilo". And few songs match the slow-burning seductive firepower of "Holly Holy".

Yes he was. Remember he did the re-make of the Al Jolson film “The Jazz Singer”? It is the story of a Jewish singer. Well, there is also an old Irving Berlin song which Jolson sang, that is a precursor to this one. It’s called “Revival Day”. Irving Berlin was also Jewish. Love both songs.

Neil Diamond is Jewish (his father was a Cantor). I saw him on Johnny Carson's show one night many years ago. Neil has released many Christmas albums. Johnny asked him why he does that since he's Jewish. He replied that he has always loved Christian Gospel and Christmas music so he loves to sing Christmas and gospel inspired music.

So sad he can’t tour anymore.

Neil Diamond is/was a top notch performer. A CLASS ACT! ... And yes! His shows were a blast. Everyone that attended a LIVE show knew they were about ready to witness and experience {the first time for some concert goers} a performance from a larger than life, international superstar. Charisma oozed from every pore. He had a great sense of humor when he would turn up the charm with the women in the audience as he would lower himself to his knees, his face 3 inches from hers and serenade them right out of their socks with #Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon or #Hello Again. They would never be the same again. Especially if he kissed them too!
Not only was Neil a dynamic stage performer, he was/is a 'master craftsman' songwriter first and foremost. He has a catalog of songs dating back to 1966 to 2018 that filled 34-36 studio albums, 8-9 LIVE albums and a couple handfuls of 'Greatest Hits' albums. The longer his career lasted, the harder it was to choose which songs would make the 'world tour list' I'm sure. Neil was strictly a solo act. A one man show while on tour. Each show was nothing less than 2 hours long. The last time anyone was booked to open for Neil was way back in 1971 and her name was Odetta. The following year, Neil sold out 10 nights at the Greek Theater in L.A. in August of 1972. One performance, August 24th, was recorded and sold as a Double Live album titled #Hot August Night. Regarded as his best ever LIVE album and selling millions around the world, Neil had instantly become a international superstar and sensation overnight.
I've seen Neil LIVE in Seattle, WA 22 times.

Neil Diamond was a dynamite performer. Saw him in concert 4 times. Every show was 3 hrs plus and different each time. He has such a library of songs that are just great music. Timeless. His voice was unmistakable. He no longer tours due to having Parkinsons. Several years ago he fell off the stage and broke his back, after that he was in a lot of pain for most of his performances but you'd never know it. An absolute showman, I miss his presence on stage. You should know that for the 5 decades he performed, he always had the same band members, he was very loyal to his crew. His signature song is Iam I said, a story of himself, beautiful song. And you and your wife should sit down and enjoy his movie The Jazz Singer.

Loved your reaction.. But your comment about preaching and teaching the gospel or spreading the news as it were, caught my attention. As an Irishman I and I believe most irish (cant speak for others ) hated to be preached at or pretty much have a gospel shoved onto us. As a Christian Believer for many years now I avoid doing any of that and do it in my poetry (as a poet it helps LoL) I like to add subtle teachings or directions for folks to decide for themselves.. Religion has been rammed onto folks sometimes by force and has a negative effect also the church abuse by Roman Catholic church has negative effect on folks. Thus subtle softly softly ways are best... again great reactions..
    Blessings From Ireland

Neil Diamond was a bit of an unclassifiable singer in the 60s, somehow straddling folk, rock and good time Beach Boys. And he seemed to often sing right on the edge of his capabilities, despite writing for himself. Songs poured out of the man for a while, first as a songwriter and then for himself. A great lyricist as well, iriginal user of words such "Iam.. I said" and "beautiful noise". I enjoy your reactions, a revelation to an older man of how much of my favourite music is so long ago.

as a young man that new york jew took a trip through the south and in a small town saw the ads for the brother love tent revival. songwriter that he is, he attended. one thing to notice is the tempo and volumn increases and decreases as a hellfire preacher. good evaluation

You have to listen to "Hot August Night" #1, because it was so good he later went back and did another one. It is, by far, his best album and concert. Most of his "best of" comes from this album .

His younger voice was more powerful! But, I was a fan from the beginning of his career. I saw him live several times thru the years. Only singer I ever stood in line to buy tickets at 4:00am in a December freezing sleet/rain storm. It was well worth the misery! LOL

But, there is an old Irving Berlin song called “Revival Day”, which was a hit by Al Jolson, & pre-dated this by 45 years and is the same idea. I love both!

Thanks for the reaction. I enjoyed seeing him again.I liked Forever in Blue Jeans. Wait until you see him 20 years younger, His voice was even more powerful. What i loved about him is his sheer aliveness. He was my favorite artist in my 20’s. i still love him, but the sound quality of the medium has really suffered with time.

I heard this for the first time in the spring of 1969 when i was in the ninth grade. It was a description of something I experienced in the American South at that time; The Traveling Revival.

Has sold 130,000,000 records since 1962. Just wanted to be a song writer, but had to sing them to sell them. He was so good they hired him to sing them.
He wrote the soundtrack to the movie Johnathan Livingston Seagull. Earned $12,000,000 and a Grammy. I still listen to it.
