  • I bought this truck in 2013 with about 94,500 or so miles on it. It's still going strong (and on the original fuel pump no less!)...
    Think it'll make 300,000 miles? I'm hoping for that and many more. When a major selling point of a new car or truck is the size of its touchscreen, there's been a major wrong turn made somewhere. The modern car and truck are made completely of Do Not Want.
    VF displays are awesome, but mechanical odometers have 'em beat when it comes to all those numbers rolling over.

    I have seen dozens of these GM trucks roll through the shop I work for. Most of them with well over 300,000kms (187,000miles) and still running strong.
    Usually the main things they come into the shop for are front wheel bearings, control arms / ball joints, brakes, and tune ups.
    I think GM did an excellent job with these trucks.

    Hello Bill. Congrats on a good truck.
    I just wanted to chime in on something that happened with my 99 Silverado recently and let everyone know what to do about it.
    My 4x4 system suddenly completely shut down on me one morning. It has the push button, with Auto 4x4 drive mode. All the lights on the 4x4 buttons were dark and the transmission was in limp home mode.
    I ended up doing some research and thought the 4x4 shifter motor on the front side of the transfer case was out. It's not a hard repair but you do have to remove the front driveshaft to access it, and the motor is around $100.00 but you should lift the truck for easier access. Now, I did ask a couple of friends who did say that was a possibility but to check fuses first. The in cab fuse box is on the drivers side, and accessible from a removable panel on the side of the dash. The lone 4x4 fuse there was fine. So I thought again about the 4x4 motor, but also checked another forum and saw a comment from a guy who invested in a 1 year package of self service on his truck, to get mechanics suggestions for repairs, and when he put his symptoms in, same as mine, he was referred to another fuse under the hood in the fuse box there. There is another fuse marked ATC (Automatic Transfer Case but you wouldn't know that because there is no definition for that fuse. It is identified location wise on the fusebox cover diagrom). Anyway he said that is the fuse that blows when this happens and replacing it restored his 4x4 system to full working operation. I pulled that fuse out and sure enough, it was blown ( a 20 amp fuse), and replaced it and my 4x4 system was up and running completely as well.
    Which was a blessing from God because I needed the truck to go to the hospital a few days later because I managed to come down with a good case of covid-19 and am on the recovery for that now.
    So if anyone has their auto 4x4 go down on them, check the fusebox under the hood for the ATC fuse and if it's blown, that's your culprit.
    Have a great day everyone.

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  3 роки тому +1

      To make a long reply short, that is why I rejected four wheel drive on my S-10 and why I'm glad this truck has a conventional, manually shifted transfer case. (Not to say that I am not curious about the automatic systems, especially GM's "AWD" variant that provides minimal driving power to the front wheels until more is called for.)
      With regard to cryptically or incompletely labeled circuits in GM vehicles, I always thought it odd that the BBPOJ (definitely a 4x2, open differential) had a 25 amp (!) 4WD fuse fitted from the factory.
      I hope you have nothing less than a speedy and complete recovery from the coronavirus.

    • @dannyo6699
      @dannyo6699 3 роки тому +1

      @@uxwbill thanks for responding Bill. That's hilarious that the BBPOJ has that fuse factory. I got a good belly laugh out of that. Never would have expected that.
      I bought the truck used too so it was equipped how it was. But it's been a solid reliable truck for me. I've just put tires gas and oil in it since 2011. The only drawback is the a/c quit shortly after I bought it so that's what can happen with used. But on the plus side, it uses almost no oil which for me is a bonus. It does start going down a little right about the time it's due for an oil change.
      Anyway, aside from that fuse, the 4x4 functions fairly flawlessly and does what it's supposed to do. I mainly use auto when it's a bit weathery outside and just need some extra traction or mental assurance. To go into full on 4x4 is mostly not necessary but I do like that I have it if I need it.
      For my part, thank you for the well wishes. I came home yesterday and am just taking it easy per doctor's orders. I'm on the mend.😁

    A lot of pickups on the used market around these parts have hit or crested 1000000 km (which IIRC is in the 600000 mile range) so I'd figure that at least the core parts of the powertrain should have no problem hitting 300000 miles. Given it's a Chevrolet however, the body might leave something to be desired. :-P

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  3 роки тому +4

      Wow, that kind of accumulated mileage is impressive!
      Rust will be a problem. This truck is starting down the road of having sharp edges like Kirbykrazy's red truck...
      I have to decide if I am willing to put an airbag sensor and door latch (combined with the door switch, which is what actually failed) on this truck...and to fix the evaporative emission control fault. I probably will.
      The power locks, alarm and door ajar warning went mad when that switch failed. For now, unplugging it worked without disrupting anything else.

      @@uxwbill When the rust does start being a real problem, I'd say that it would be worth putting rockers, cab corners, and whatever else it needs on it.

    Quite a milestone, well worth keeping up the maintenance and rust proofing if you're happy with the truck. I do share your opinion on modern vehicles, even in a money no object situation there isn't much built in the last decade that looks in any way desirable to me.

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  3 роки тому +2

      I'll admit I've done little to nothing in regards to rust proofing and it's starting to show. Not sure if I'll rebuild the rocker panels when they're finally gone...maybe if I learn how to weld and such? That's the only place it's really bad.
      I think about the only thing I could countenance buying new on today's market would be a fullsize Chevy Express Van. Those are still thankfully free of most of the garbage they're foisting on car buyers today. (I think the smallest one they still make is a three quarter ton, and I'd really hate to be feeding that as a daily driver. And it's probably got a TPMS along with a backup camera, but both of those I could at least tolerate.)

    Hello UXWBILL, this is Joseph, a fan of of your UA-cam channel since 2015, I recently bought a -1991- Chrysler New Yorker Fifth Avenue, and I have been In the process of refurbishing for daily driver use. That said, the car was made when R-12 refrigerant was manufactured. Unfortunately, being the car is 30 years old, and sat in someone’s garage for 4 years before I bought it. Things will wear out and go bad. Thus this is the reason I am contacting you, my car’s air conditioning system has leaked out all of what is left of the R-12 refrigeration that it has had left and the air conditioning system compressor is in fail safe mode and will not turn on unless positive power is applied by jump leads. I have asked around to find out what it will take to repair the system and some places have said I only need a remanufacturing kit that has seals for the blower compressor and dryer, and have the system drained of all R-12 have a mineral oil put into it then put 134-A in however. Other people have said that R-34-A will not work with a R-12 compressor and it will have to be completely overhauled. With that said, the first method has been quoted to me to cost around 200$ with parts and labor. The other one with a complete rebuild will cost around 1000$. So my message here to you today is, what do you think is the right way to go, the kit with the mineral oil or the complete gutting and rebuild of the air system. The heat does work it’s just the conditioning side that’s bad. Thanks for reading and I hope to get your feedback soon.

    • @AiOinc1
      @AiOinc1 3 роки тому +1

      Most compressors can switch their refrigerant with just a valve body change. All the computer is watching for is whether the pressure is within it's rating.
      Heat is unrelated to the air conditioning system for that car.

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  3 роки тому +2

      R-134a will work with your system and compressor, *but* it does so at somewhat reduced efficiency in a system designed for R-12.
      Some of the following advice is a bit unconventional or not commonly done on automotive systems. As I've studied both and have both my EPA 608 Universal and 609 MVAC, I tend to mix and match a bit in terms of service technique. I also don't have a fancy-dancy all in one refrigerant servicing machine. At a minimum, you should do the following if you really want the A/C to work and be reliable:
      1. Find and fix all the leaks. All of them. Really. You may get lucky and it's only the service valves that have leaked. Replacing those, which you will have to do anyway for a proper R-134a conversion, is not difficult or expensive. Change the filter/dryer and inspect the orifice if you can get to it without chancing a disaster. It sure won't hurt to change the seals, some of which are probably pretty borderline after nearly 30 years. If the orifice is soiled or damaged, replace that too.
      2. Clean the system as best you can, to get all the mineral oil and traces of old refrigerant out. At a minimum, this should consist of a thorough purge with dry nitrogen gas. (This is where you'll find out if you got all of the significant leaks.) Opinions are divided sharply on chemical based system flushes. I don't think it'll hurt to use one. (A shop you hire to do the work probably isn't going to do a nitrogen purge.)
      At this point, you'd probably want to add the new oil to the compressor.
      Figure out how much refrigerant and oil you'll need and procure it.
      3. Pull the system into a deep vacuum. (Use a vacuum gauge that reads in microns.) Here again, if there are leaks, even tiny ones, you will find them. Break the vacuum a few times with nitrogen, pulling a deeper vacuum each time. This also helps clean the system and drives out any hidden pockets of moisture. Moisture is your enemy. If you can't get a good vacuum (below 1,000 microns and ideally 500, a little more won't hurt), you still have a leak. Or lots of moisture that you're boiling off.
      Most automotive A/C shops have an "all in one" service machine that recovers existing refrigerant, pulls a vacuum, and charges in the new refrigerant+oil. It's not going to take the time that I would (especially for the vacuum pump runs) but it will do an OK job if the system is otherwise sound.
      PAG oil as used with R-134a is extremely hygroscopic (pulls moisture out of the air) and should be used immediately after opening the sealed container.
      Charge the system while it's in a vacuum and it'll almost certainly pull the entire charge in. You or the shop should use an accurate scale, or equipment that can display how much refrigerant is being put into the system.

    • @uxwbill

      I'll start out by saying I hate cell phones. I always have and I always will. (The corollary to this being that I reserve the right to change this opinion when one of my unroadworthy wrecks has left me a hundred miles from anything.)
      Anyway. To be completely honest, I think the first-gen iPSE is probably the best smartphone Apple has ever made. I think it's the perfect size. It's still powerful enough to do anything I want (which isn't much, but never mind that...) It's still equipped with a headphone jack. I find it amazing that they actually gave it the ability to record video at 4K resolution, though I'd never consider the camera or microphone suitable for replacing even a standard definition camcorder.
      If I could change anything about it, I'd offer the option to make the keyboard larger in portrait mode. I don't profess to know how people do it, going a million miles an hour with their thumbs on these things. (I don't text, won't read texts, and would love to see texting die out completely as would be right and proper, but I have been known to reply to e-mails.) I doubt Apple ever does this, and I'll be surprised if the first-gen iPSE gets the next release of iOS.

      The Honda soy wiring lawsuit was legit. But all the Toyota and Honda fan boys on the jury sided for their foreign master. @uxwbill  3 роки тому +4

      I think there is one of the "campaign completed" stickers underhood that GM uses here in the US to indicate a completed recall related repair on a vehicle. There was also a service bulletin on the MVAC blower wiring, resistor/relay pack and connector.
      I wondered if this truck might have a Takata airbag (as it does have Takata seatbelts) but I've never been sent a recall letter for that, nor did GM's web site indicate that the truck was subject to any such recall.

      @@uxwbill The generation before your truck, the pre-facelift GMT-800 platform, has lots of problems under the dash, thus far I've had to replace the blower motor resistor, headlight varister, and 4x4 switch, due to poor factory build quality, I went back with Dorman parts because I don't wish to re-replace those parts anytime soon, and FYI when it's cold put your thumb on the flat part of the handle when opening the door otherwise you're likely to break the handle off, and those handles are a PITA to replace, I speak from experience replacing both front door handles 3 times, first time the original handles broke, second time the cheap handles my brother bought broke and he paid me to replace them, and the 3rd time I replaced the second set of cheap handles he bought with Dorman handles, they've held up very well and are better made than the OEM handles, same with the original blower resistor and headlight varister. My truck has been in the family awhile, my mother bought it used and had the whole brake system front to back replaced, my brother bought it off her and had the frame patched and wiring replaced front to back, then I bought it off him and promptly sunk $1500 into rebuilding the front end and having some under dash wiring replaced, next on the list is replacing the transmission and rebuilding the rear end, engine was rebuilt before my mother bought it.

      The BBPOJ was at 17x,000 or so when my father traded it off. To this day, I'm not really sure why. It was basically the Keykeeper's truck at that point, and it had essentially no value*. Only occasionally did the SES/MIL come on in the BBPOJ, and it usually went right back out again.
      Naughty Truck's SES/MIL light has been on for a long time. I know exactly why, don't really care, and have no particular plan to fix it. It's not going to harm anything.
      * before it left, we replaced the long-defunct A/C compressor and I thoroughly purged, leak checked and repaired the system before charging it. So, while it may have been a real junker, it was an *air conditioned* junker! I hope whoever's got it now appreciates that!

I'm hoping to pick up a nice square body Ford LTD Crown Victora they are plentyful down here in Flordia where i now reside. I used to live in Michigan. Lets just say seeing a lot of rust free late model cars down here has put a smile on my face. I know you had the old K-car wagon years ago that popped a head gasket whatever happened to it? My late grandmothers old 1990 GMC Vandura G2500 Conversion Van made it to 902,166.3 Miles on the odometer back in 2011 when we sold it. It now belongs to a good friend of mine down in Kentucky where it's broken 1Million miles. Last I knew it was still rocking R12 but sadly he had it converted over to R134a recently as a rock hit the condensor coil and all that precious R12 went bye bye. This happened while he was on a dirt road heading to a buddies house. That old GM 350 keeps on going.

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  3 роки тому

      There's really nothing more to say about either one. At some point, the cassette-shaped MP3 player fell off of a shelf and that was the end of it. It never powered up again. The tape player in the truck still works fine and performs very well, but someone at GM made the unfortunate design mistake of forcing Dolby B NR on at all times.
      (I use Dolby B NR on all of my cassette recordings, but its being forced on in the truck's cassette player makes the use of cassette shell adapters problematic. I suspect that if one could get their hands on a Dolby B encoder IC, that one could just feed pre-encoded input to the cassette shell and solve the problem that way.)
