    Funny you uploaded today, I was thinking about this channel only about an hour ago. Been watching since 2012 (I was 9 at the time, I grew up on this channel). If I haven't watched every one of your videos, then I've certainly come close, you taught me a whole lot of what I now know about consumer electronics and repair, and of course computers, not to mention peaked my interest in cars, a topic that, as a blind person, I'm pretty well disconnected from.
    Sending well wishes from the UK to you and your family. 😁

    Bill, not only do you look a lot like your mom, but you are more like you mom in other ways as well. Also I had a tree that did the same thing in my house during a very bad wind storm. The whole thing blew down completely. A very large old oak. Took me two weeks to cut it up. I am still processing the wood for fire wood.

    18:08, This moment right here, reminds me of a story our chimney sweeper told me.
    They were cleaning the chimney on a large Victorian House over 4 stories high.
    One of the chimney sweepers, while he was finishing up received a phone call, so he took the call and starts walking up-and-down the ridge of the roof, I was told the guy was fearless.
    Lostly, while he was cleaning our chimney, he was sitting on the edge with a good thirty foot drop to the ground.

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  Місяць тому +4

      The Keykeeper was up there to waterproof the masonry on both chimneys. Heights don't bother him much. I'm terrified of them under the right (wrong?) circumstances. I've been up on that roof, but you won't find me anywhere near an edge. I also won't take the TV tower to get up there, instead going through a window.

    Nice to see the original limestones were able to be reused.
    That telephone like installation looks questionable... Perfect time to improve that while there is easier access.

    In 2012, a major derecho hit our area. What I thought would be a minor inconvenience took an interesting turn when I got out an AM radio and heard millions were without power. We lost one tree far away from the house. We had no power for around 6 days. When the power came back on, the cable with all of its bundled services stayed off. Dad was complaining while I was tickled to death to have the air conditioner back. It's now 2024, dad passed from cardiorenal failure in 2020, we have cellular modems for the internet and home phone, and we have had free cable TV for around 2 years because the cable company never disconnected it. I even told them about it. They basically said not to worry.

    The Ohio Derecho in June 2022 and the Bomb Cyclone in December 2022 hit us extremely hard. I wish I had the intelligence to have that pine tree inspected by an arborist. I lost my 2016 Colorado, which was just paid off, our electrical mast, and in December it crushed part of our garage. Fortunately, none of the windows suffered any damage.
    Yes, I agree that concrete steps would be great, but despite their higher cost, they require no additional maintenance beyond applying a sealer. You sometimes have to think about the fact that you get older. Okay, we can do this, but it costs more. But what will make it easier for us later on? I type this on a brand new model F compact keyboard!

    So the phone line-- Might be worth investing in some shielded outdoor rated Cat5. It'll be relatively thicker than the original, but it'll at least be a lot better off in terms of noise and resistance to the elements. I'm about to undertake such a project running actual ethernet to the garage of the house my mother and her husband bought out in virginia, to hook up a security camera system.

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  Місяць тому +4

      As it happens, I already have some direct burial shielded Ethernet cable left over from another job. I hadn't even thought about using it for that purpose. (It also claims to be suitable for outdoor use.) Several years ago, I bought out the entire inventory of a RadioShack dealer who was retiring and I've got a *lot* of telephone wire as a result. I was going to try and use some of that up.

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  Місяць тому +5

      There was not a tornado, only high wind speeds. I didn't own the palace at the time and it was not obviously damaged, so I cannot say.

    Disclaimer - I'd profess a similar level of knowledge (or lack thereof) in the area of building and construction. Watching the rebuild of the staircase, I couldn't help but wonder if replacement stairs couldn't be built into that brick structure; using your example of concrete, perhaps the slabs could comprise part of the brick pillars?
    That aside, I do absolutely love the look of red bricks and mortar, it's a very "crisp" sort of look.

    There are a lot of benefits to look out for when working for a particular employer, but being able to borrow a forklift is a pretty awesome benefit to have haha.
    Any good news on the storm drains?

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  Місяць тому

      He can borrow all sorts of interesting machinery. I'm not sure what you're asking about with regard to storm drains. Some years ago, the city finally came through (far too late, but still) and separated both the storm and sanitary sewer. This is great, except for the inlet grilles having large enough gaps that raccoons can (and do!) live in the pipes!
