Bought a 98 F-150 3-door 4x4 with a 5.4L back in 2008 for $2700 back when gas was $4.50/gallon, same burgundy interior/exterior color, built in Norfolk, VA. Drove it from Charlotte, NC to Iguala, Mexico back in Sept. 2008 where it's still running strong today with over 333000 miles on it. Fun 3 day, 2200 mile adventure!

One thing that is nice about this truck (and it goes along with the 5A Fuse) is that it has a COMPLETE set of EASILY readable gauges. Wish more car companies took the time to install a complete set of gauges.

    Great video as always Bill.
My best friend has the 2001 version of this truck, but it's forest green, and the crew cab with the short bed, V8 and 4x4, though I think his has the electronic switch on the dash. His is the fill kit Lariat version, with leather. Bought it used about 4 years ago with something like 71K miles on it. Today, I think it has a mere 127K, max on it.
I own a 2003 Mazda Protege5 that had 110K+ miles on it when I bought it nearly 2.5 years ago now, and it has 128K+ miles on it now.
I've ridden in his truck and it's a very nice vehicle, and today, pretty much anything you buy in the past decade from the big US 3 tend to be more or less reliable. The sad fact of it was the big 3 made some awful cars in the 70's, and 80's in terms of their not being reliable in the least. That is, you may get 2 bad ones for every good one.
But when you got a good one, they tended to last.
    Love these types of videos.

I had a base model 2001 with the 4.6, it actually had some get up to it, no tachometer, no cruise control, manual windows and locks, all grey interior with vinyl bench seats, it had been in a wreck, belts were cut and airbags deployed but it didn't stop me, I honestly miss that truck, lost it to an oil pump failure and the city picked it up off the side of the road before I could

The 1998 and 1999 Tauruses and Sables had a BLUE interior. Along with beige and gray.
When at least 96-03 Tauruses were imported from Canada to the US, the importer goes through a dealer or FoMoCo to obtain a replacement speedometer head with MPH as the default and the mileage converted to Miles. The cluster was removed, disassembled, and had speedo head swapped out. Must be similar for the Ford F150 where they obtain a new US market cluster with mileage matched, then replace it. Nice and easy since all other regulations won't matter. (no need to change cats, window glass, etc).

And with overdrive the 4.6 did impress and I had to drive with a head gasket leak for 5 months and still went everywhere and did everything that’s fixed now just carried some coolant and kept an eye on coolant level

    uxwbill,
First off, long time fan, and fellow electronics guru lol. I would say that F150 was a Canadian truck first. The dead give away for me is the headlights. Those are day time driving lights or DRL's. Those could have been ordered however, all cars in Canada are required to have them.
I own the same year of F150 and same model and mine does not have them. My Chrysler Aspen was also from Canada and has them. I also discovered after pulling the gauge pod that there was a sticker saying that it had been changed from kmh to mph and that it was certified. You could check there.
I own a small thrift store and get some pretty neat older electronics so I enjoy watching your videos and comparing.

I've never driven the truck version, but we had a 4.6L TBird in the family a few years ago. I found it to be a very smooth, "civilized" engine, but surprisingly lacking of low end torque for it's size. The programming also shifted slowly. It seemed Ford had it set up as a luxury engine. It was certainly long lasting though. Ours had 350K when we parted and the engine was still doing okay. The 4.6 seems to have a reputation for that.
I'm slow to warm up to a red interior but I like it here. Every Ford truck I've been in was a generic gray U-Haul rental. This color makes it feel like it's yours.
There was a trick at least in the TBird. If you engage the "OD off" feature, select 1st, and then manually select 2nd as you accelerate, it would shift faster and chirp the tires. That was impossible with the normal D/OD selection. Manipulating it this way apparently put the ECM into a different mode of behavior.
I've seen this button labeled as "MAN SHIFT" in an older Ford, where it was a reference to 2nd gear start capability and a sportier shifting mode. I think in reality, the button did similar things in both vehicles, they just had different labels.
Don't trust that oil pressure gauge on Fords. They're rigged to read nearly constant. I guess Ford got tired of service calls from people who didn't know how oil pressure really behaves. You have to hook up a mechanical gauge to get a real reading.

It may come late on this one but maybe someone else might need the info: Generally if a Ford/Mercury/Lincoln of that vintage (early 90-late 2000s) blow the instrument fuse when shifting into gears it is 99% the Overdrive Lock-out button wiring that shorts out right below the shift lever. Easy fix.

They made a performance improved version of the 4.6 starting about 2000, that gave you another 30HP. I've been driving a 2001 2WD with the 4.6 and the 3.55 gear (was an option and if you wanted a limited slip rear end you had to get the 3.55 or 3.73 gear, however the 3.73 was only available with the 5.4) since it was new in 2001. Yes it's not a torque engine, to pull a trailer you're looking at direct drive and it downshifts a lot. I had a '66 Old Toronado on a trailer behind it ran into the hills on I-75 south of Mackinac City Michigan and it downshifted and was pulling 3200 RPMs to hold 55-60 MPH. Wasn't something you wanted to sit in very long at that RPM. It did pull much better after I got it running on all cylinders again, seems from day one it had a weak injector, you'd work it, the cylinder would go lean and start knocking, the computer would do it's thing including retarding timing and power would drop off. I put 8 new injectors in it at 100,000 miles and the knock went away and it pulls stronger with no knock or fuss.

This may be a late answer, but the problem is most likely in the shift lever wiring that pops the instrument fuse. The OD OFF switch wires will short to ground. Many Ford/Mercury/Lincoln cars and trucks have that problem. In most cased all it needs is a bit of insulation placed at the right spot, worst case is a new shift lever.

Anywhere from drivers/pass smashed to the center of the cab, to cars that look to be in easily driving condition. Junk yards are a good place to get cheap upgrades of my cars too :)

My 1980 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme was manufactured in Canada. It's been done for years now. It had a 200 THD and it blew the torque convertor on the first cold winter day. The dealer in Yonkers NY put a 350 in it... Later in it's life I put a 350CID engine in it to replace the 260 originally installed. I though at the time of purchase that the V8 was the engine to go with, I later regretted that choice as the V6 offered was a much better engine. Funny, I sold my 1978 Starfire because the engine was not running correctly, Completely my fault! I plugged the vacuum advance not liking emission controls at the time. I was young and dumb at the time! Well learning... Today no issues making it work as new so I guess it worked out in the end.

the mirror coating is to help with headlight glare at night, from the person behind you. my Corolla doesn't have that coating and I get glare like you wouldn't believe driving down the highway sometimes... supposedly this isn't too much of an issue anymore, they changed the way mirrors are made or something, so I should consider a replacement soon.
also, my Corolla is color-keyed, and I can guarantee that there are no more color-keyed interiors! that's definitely a 90s thing. but it's great because my corpse corolla and running corolla are so close a match inside, you can't tell! so plastics be damned, I can swap components to no end and it'll look good any day of the week (well, for a Corolla.)

The temperature gauge never went up to normal range unless I was going up the steep mountain on our interstate. It would fall back to below normal at the top. We also had a 2001 Olds Alero with a horn that only worked when the steering was straight. A 2001 Corolla that had a loose bulb or something in the climate controls. A slight smack would temporally fix that. LOL

Attention all viewers: This truck was *STOLEN* in the fall of 2019. Assuming it still exists, we believe it may be in the Indianapolis area. In addition to the unique dark red interior, this truck has (or had) a mismatched bright red mirror cover on the passenger's side. There are some kind of dark brown stains on the headliner, which is off white in color. They look almost as though someone opened a fizzy soda and it sprayed all over the place.

I believe a person that lived in canada ordered the truck from another motor company. The only ford trucks that have been built as for the body is called mercury trucks. Now my 02 4dr crew cab F150 also has the 4.6 engine but is a canadian engine built by windsor in canada and has a cast iron engine block, but Ford motors in the US does buy some of their engines from canada. The US version of the 4.6 has a aluminum block engine. Most people arent aware of these look alike engines being different. Example here my 1967 mercury cougar with the 289 looks just like the amaerican 289 ford v8 but is painted a light blue as to where the 67 fords with 289 are dark blue painted, but they are not the same because the widsor ford 289 weighs more and has nickle mixed with the cast iron and is a much tougher engine. You can have any american ford vehicle but find out iif it s V8 is the windsor version or the US version. My 4.6 V8 is very superior to the other f150 4.6s that have the 4.6 american made engine. My 4.6 is superior to the V8 4.6 in the lincolns even because the lincoln US 4.6 has aluminum block with a plastic intake manifold as to where the windsor verson like I have in my 02 F150 has a thick aluminum intake on it. I was hoping n your video that you wouls show the engine you took out of your truck so I could see that engine block because if it was from canada it would have a cast iron block

I plan on fixing both since I gotta take apart the dash anyways, nice truck btw it looks almost like mine except very suprised to see that maroon interior, and sounded great!, mine has actually been down for a bit we thought we might need to get a new motor cause it was running on 7 cylinders when we got it going, anyways after 3 shops and a lot of thinking we decided to pop the valve cover off and bam there it was lash adjuster failed... put a new one back in and it fired, now we get to do all the fun stuff Trans sensor work, suspension and front end lol we are goin all out on it since it looks new the old owners pretty much kept it in good shape

For auto lights to kick in it would have to be dark out. it was not in this video. the truck has daytime running lights. a Canadian law

You sure are sprucing up the driveway over there at Walsh's Used Cars and Appliance Emporium. I didn't know they had actual interior "colors" that late other than gray or tan, nice to see that. Is it possible it's geared for towing? That's probably the reason for the lackluster acceleration. *cough* supercharger *cough* Ooohh look, "Uxwbill is bored again..." is in the recommended videos! :P

My mom had a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Daytona coupe that was a Canadian import vehicle. It also had DRL's and owner's manuals that were both in English and French, but with the speedometer in MPH. The climate control was in Celsius, however. Sadly, a deer killed that vehicle, three days after Mom's last payment on it, but it was fun while it lasted. Now she's got a Chrysler 300m Special.

When you said "this truck's got a lot of promise", at first it sounded like you were going to say "a lot of problems". But considering that you actually found some good things to say about the Impala, I should not doubt your eternal optimism when it comes to vehicles.
The instrument cluster was probably swapped for a U.S.-spec one when it was imported, which means it might have more miles on it than indicated on the odometer, and they might not have done the neatest wiring job, thus contributing to its propensity for blowing fuses.
At least here in NJ, if you buy or sell 7 or more vehicles in one year, you have to register as a car dealer. At the rate you're going, maybe I should start printing a Walsh Motors sign for you to put on top of that garage!

When you said that after Furhead filled the truck up with gas and lost a 5amp fuse after he started up reminded me of my 2000 Malibu that I am driving currently after I got the air compressor plugged back in so I can have Air conditioning. After running the car with AC for about 15 mins or so my Fuel gauge as well as my Temp gauge would not register meaning that I blew a fuse which was caused by by the compressor. So I had to replace the compressor with a new one. About the horn if you have a deer in your path is also when you need the horn. Not a bad truck for what it is. Yes it is interesting that a Canadian based truck has English measurements.

I think the oil pressure gauges on many of those ford's are glorified "idiot lights", they either had perfect pressure or no pressure. Maybe I'm wrong??

I am going to assume this truck was used primarily by the previous owner(s) as a work truck. Lots of work trucks aren't in the best shape cosmetically with door dings, dents, and scratches and this one has all of them. Not sure about the interior but I assume the interior won't be in great shape. The floors will be dirty, stained, and in general the interior will be dirty. Trucks are meant to be used for work so that's how it should be.

    • @uxwbill

A lot of vehicles are built at plants located in a different country from where they will ultimately be sold. I strongly believe this truck was built in a Canadian plant *for* the Canadian market. Certainly other Ford trucks built at that plant were equipped for the US market.

great video bill, i purchased my first car last friday wil be picking it up coming thursday i'm very exited. its a 2006 fiat punto 1.2L with only 53K km on the clock (33K miles if math isnt failing me)
i also found it quite curious how a 4.6L V8 could be considered underpowered, is the truck realy that heavy? or are there more things to factor in? (like power output)

The daytime running lamps may have been either an option or a requirement in Canada. My mother's old 1999 Ford Expedition didn't even have daytime running lamps and she had one of the higher end models.

Nice Mk1 VW Golf cabriolet ther at 11:57 I bet you don't see many over ther in the US nowadays, why on earth an old Golf like that is in there beats me they'd make a decent car for someone who doesn't have a lot of money they're reliable as heck and I bet there ain't much wrong with it that can't be serviced or fixed with some effort though I we don't know it's history right enough. Could be more than meets the eye.
