Review: 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz Limited - Better than Maverick?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 24 лип 2024
- I review the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz to find out if it's the new pickup truck to beat in the segment. With the refinement of its unibody platform, its best-in-class horsepower and torque, striking looks and high-tech interior, the Santa Cruz definitely stands out from the rest of the mid-size pickup trucks. With an as-tested price of $41,345 it's a great value too, starting over $10,000 less than the Ridgeline. But there's one problem, the new Ford Maverick is $4,000 cheaper. Is the Santa Cruz better? I go over the pros and cons of each in this video. What do you think about the Hyundai Santa Cruz? Thanks to Hyundai for providing this vehicle to review!

In this 2022 hyundai santa cruz review I go over all the 2022 hyundai santa cruz features. - Авто та транспорт
Hyundai were smart for putting the headlights low on the front. More manufacturers should start doing that so other drivers on the road are not blinded by LEDs.
And these front end jacked up trucks are definitely blinding at night.
Jeep did it years ago and they got hammered for it.
Many makers now have lights mounted low.
As a sedan driver, I really appreciate it. I always felt like Buicks had absurdly bright lights. I wish this was a regulation honestly.
But those front turn signals pointing the wrong way. Once you see that you just can't unsee it.
I love this vehicle! I’m so proud of Hyundai for shaking up the automotive world with their vehicles. This may or may not appeal to everyone but it says” Hey, we’re thinking out of the box”.
Three things to note: I was disappointed that they didn’t add a 2 or 3 foot horizontal bed door to the inside of the bulkhead. A pass through for lumber, surfboards, etc.
And the steering wheel doesn’t fit the Spirit of the car. Or do the pastel paint colors. Bring on some Bold colors!
Nice job though.
I love your enthusiasm but smallish truck cars are all over the world just not in the USA so much. Dodge and Chevy have very small nice trucks all over the world.
I think the Santa Cruz is the sweet spot for what I'd need in a truck. It's enough truck for those times you say "man I wish I had a truck", but not so much truck that you're wasting money if you're doing anything less than hauling stuff around at the jobsite. I'd definitely trade my Sonata for this as my personal all-around vehicle. Think I'll take a trip to the dealership sometime as they have one in this exact configuration on the lot.
Can do what I'm doing and aim for the 2010 Ford Sport Trac Adrenalin with V8 and navigation package. 💙😎👍👍

What's amazing about this vehicle is that it has huge presence thanks to it's bold design even though it's small for a truck.
Nice review and competitor comparison. Keep up the good work!
Thanks!
i built a loaded lariat with everything i could throw in and then i decided to go with the Santa Cruz limited, i am glad i did, the price difference was 3,100.00 so it was negligible. I went with my gut feeling and finally found a dealer to sell at msrp and with Hyundai's best warranty and the additional no cost lifetime engine and transmission warranty from the dealer it was a no brainer. I have sat in both vehicles, the SC has a better fit and finish, feels premium and rides great and is fast, even the suspension and exhaust is more robust than the maverick. Not to mention way more tech and safety features.
Excellent review, Matt! I bought a Limited about a month ago and absolutely love it.
What color did you go with? So did I (Limited) - mine is Sage Gray - only wish they had more interesting colors....
@@Scotty_in_Ohio I went with white. Agreed on the colors
i did too and its great
Hey Matt... you left out the words "of course" while naming the vehicle... I like it.
Saw a sand colored one on the road yesterday and it really stood out😎 Its amazing how Hyundai/KIA/Genesis just keep hitting you with fresh products every quarter it seems❗
I know, the rate they're putting out new vehicles is impressive and currently unmatched in the industry. I also have reviews on Elantra N-Line, GV70 and Carnival coming over the next 2 months.
@@MattMaranMotoring I speak for many when I say we're looking forward to them as well as when you get your hands on the full blown Elantra N😎
I just bought the Limited 2.5 L and I love this truck! Excellent review! I would agree, the Ridgeline is more truck and a great vehicle! I would’ve gone with that had it fit in my garage.… I Santa Cruz is awesome!
Congrats on your new Santa Cruz!
yep i bought a limited and chose it between the maverick and the ridgeline, i drove a ridgeline and its nice but hyundai has just as good quality and an even better warranty
I have the same (different color but same trim) and I'm seeing about 22MPG currently in fairly mixed driving - I've had a trip of about 200 miles round trip and was seeing 24MPG - I'm only on my 3rd fill up so I would expect that to improve somewhat - I drive mostly in the "SMART" mode - and will experiment with Normal and Sport. Great review Matt. BTW I call these a CUV with a bed or cartruckthing.
I liked the first person preservative of the exterior portion.
It reminds me of the Subaru Baja, lol. Not a bad looking car, looks like a versatile package, especially with that 10yr warranty if you plan on running it into the ground.
Hyundai has been knocking it completely out of the Park with their new designs. They’re fantastic!!! FINALLY AN AUTOMOTIVE COMPANY THAT DARES TO BE DIFFERENT!!! And not in the stupid looking Tesla way, but in a way that makes their vehicles look much more interesting, more premium, and way more modern and advanced than anything the competition is offering.
I was wondering: How does this corner compared to the Ford Edge?
This is really nice looking. We have a great dealer near us also, Gates Hyundai!
Don’t like the front arrow turn signal lights that point and flash in the opposite direction the vehical is actually turning. This is a really bad thing at thing at night for oncoming cars. Safety recall looming?
You're assuming that people actually use their signal ;-)
The Santa Cruz has a perfect blend of drivability and utility.
It does ride really well - I've not put too many miles on mine (I have the limited trim too) - but even with the 20" wheels the ride is pretty forgiving but compliant enough where you don't feel like you don't know where the road is or much body roll (at all). I do take away some flexibility points overall but I came from full size truck-ville (F-150) but at least I can park the Santa Cruz in my garage.
yes it is i bought as limited and everyone on here says the bed is not big enough well i owned a Colorado z71 and i used its bed but for either if i need more bed when its full i will simply hook up to my utility trailer and problem solved. btw the limited is the way to go best bang for your buck, tons of tech and safety features!
Is it possible that when you were using this vehicle on the highway that you were only using lane keeping assist, but not Lane Follow Assist? You describe wandering from side to side in the lane which the most recent version of lane keeping assist will allow, while the lane follow assist is usually top of class for keeping the vehicle centred in the lane. It's also possible that either of those systems had their settings changed to not actively assist, which would have explained your wandering issue as well.
I don't think anything was wrong with the settings. Both the lane safety features on my Premium allow quite a bit of wandering within the lane. The one that beeps at you is a bigger wanderer and I don't care for the beeping. The one activated on the steering wheel is better and will take me around a gentle corner but lets go on a sharper turn so watch out.
Hey Matt, are you going to do a interior/exterior review on the Maverick?
Eventually! It'll probably be a few months still until they start showing up in press fleets.
In Canada. You get 2 trim levels for the Santa Cruz. The top trim, after taxes and what-not =50K. The Ridgeline's Black Edition is about 58K. Personally, I'd shell out the extra 8K (although the Ridge line has 3 lessor trim levels than the top Black Edition, all with the same engine), based just on the Ridgeline's and Honda's legendary quality.
Hi Matt ..I'm wondering if there will be a KIA equivalent?
I haven't heard any rumors of one yet, but it wouldn't surprise me if they get a version eventually.
I’m weirdly in love with this thing
Same
It grows on you.... like a fungus (and I can say that I own one)...
@@Scotty_in_Ohio me too
The answer to the question seems to be a resounding YES!
Would've been a real winner if the back could open up in some fashion to store long and flat/thin items partially into the interior cabin.
Yeah, why is it that when General Motors comes up with a great idea, they go and cancel it? The Avalanche was absolutely brilliant. And then they terminated it. How stupid was that?
As much as i love the styling on this i cant justify the extra cost of it over a Maverick. I built a Maverick with the options and stuff i wanted with the top motor and it came out around 28k cant even get into the top motor of the santa cruz under 30 with Awd. I feel its priced to compete with Ranger and Colorado a bit rather than Maverick. They might be great deals used though.
That's true - I own a Santa Cruz Limited and was strongly considering the Maverick - I wanted more tech and overall ride comfort - I also wanted the extra HP/Torque although I'm not towing with mine currently (plan on just utility trailer). When I configured a Maverick with everything I wanted it was $39k and with the higher destination it worked out to be about the same (I paid $39k for my Santa Cruz). I also had two $500 discounts plus my $100 reservation fee and got VERY good money for my trade. I really do believe that these competitors means we as buyers get great options. I've been a "Ford guy" for almost 3 decades - I still believe the Maverick is going to be a "hit" and in some areas will be a better "truck-let" than the Santa Cruz but I have the Santa Cruz in my garage now - I don't believe anyone has take deliver of the Maverick yet.
@@Scotty_in_Ohio If I were looking in this segment I would go for the Santa Cruz also. The Maverick is way too Spartan.
I pray for a 2 door with a longer tray.....
Since this is for the North American market only (at least now) I wouldn't hold your breadth - it would take some company like RAM to do that before others would follow.
Looks like the Turbo AWD is the only available config in Canada. As such, it starts at $38,500.
A Maverick XLT starts at $28,500.
I agree with Matt's conclusions that if you're ok with less power and less tech, then the Maverick makes a lot of sense.
Ah interesting, I didn't realize Canada doesn't get the base engine. In that case, yeah it's very hard to justify over the Maverick.
Yep - I believe Canada ONLY gets the bigger (well turbo) and AWD - I think they have fewer trims too. Rob DC - is that $38,500 CAD?
I think it will be a great vehicle for seniors who want the utility of a truck but don't need something that requires an oxygen tank to climb into.
Lol
Or that they can afford on a fixed income and not have to get a 75k loan for a truck
@@nestr2007 Yep - people having heartburn over the almost $40k price of this - there are lower trims and they likely haven't priced out full size trucks recently or even looked at the "mid size" ones with really any equipment. I sold my 2018 F-150 XLT for one of these and a pretty happy with the switch.
😅
Ridgeline floor storage is not usable when heavy item on top. You can’t even pull the Jack and tools and spare tire.
Fuel economy is a big let down for me. why don't they give a hybrid option? I mean the bar has been set at 40 mpg, so really 20 to 27 seems pretty lack luster.
Well since it's on the Tucson platform, I'd assume that if the regular versions are a sales success, they'll port over the hybrid and possibly even plug-in hybrid versions in the future.
@@MattMaranMotoring that’d be ideal, I’m just surprised they didn’t do that to begin with.
I'd trade mine in (Santa Cruz) if an EV came out. I think someone asked a designer about that and they said and EV isn't likely based on a few things that didn't sound like a big deal but then again I don't design cars. I'd be game for a plug-in hybrid too.
Yet another wide-open mouth with squinted eyes look. The Maverick reminds me of the old days of trucks with its 'not too flashy' look. Although, with the array of clones, this is rather slick. It will be perfect for beach bums, hikers, campers, and drunk drivers.
I think Hyundai was targeting folks who could use a small "truck" but either never considered one or didn't know they needed it. I like to say it's the Granny Gardener buyer. I also put it as a CUV with a bed.
@@Scotty_in_Ohio I'm just saying o ly a few seem to be staying with traditions, but some of the mimicking does turn out, otherwise it seems that vehicle creativity is a bit limp. Not all of them, but many. There's too much to point out as examples and I'm not being judgmental. It's just strange how so many share the same design fues, fake exhaust tips, wide open mouths. Sometimes I think that many rivals are actually on the same team.
The highway driving assistant has trouble where you live because it sees the black as a road line. So it thinks your lanes are really wide.
Super practical truck for urban folks. Only missed are DCT transmission and lack of rear passenger arm rest (minor). DCT not good for offroading, maintenance or reliability. Wish it had their 8 speed auto. A mild offroad package would also be nice (tiny lift, skid plates and mild AT tires).
The two lower trims with the non-turbo engine have the torque converter 8-speed.
Lol dual clutches are very reliable and all they need is a flush every 30k miles. Not that hard. Much better for sport driving
I too don't like the lack of rear passenger arm rest. If you go with the normally aspirated engine the transmission is a traditional 8 speed auto but I don't know if you can add AWD to that combo. IMHO if you're looking at doing anything besides a gravel road I'd opt for a mid size body on frame truck - either Frontier, Tacoma, Ranger. When you can get one the Maverick with the 2.0 turbo, 4WD and the FX4 package would be again a better choice.
@@Scotty_in_Ohio bro do you have a life other than being in every comment craping on this car?
Man they have a lot of more car's and SUV's and truck's are coining 2022 different
The 2.5NA and the 2.5T are the same size, and neither is the "bigger engine" as you mention, but obviously the turbo is more powerful.
obviously!
I’m enjoying not seeing a parting line running across the hood which I think is a lazy practice in the industry.
Not a fan of how they seem to try to make it look like the engine is mounted longitudinally with the text being positioned the way it is.
Hey Matt
👍 👍 👍
Hyundai Santa Cruz owners manual does NOT state the cargo bed can only hold 661 lbs.
Hyundai Owners manual states:
1411 total weight
-750 lbs (5 people @ 150lbs each)
= 661 lbs remain for “cargo which should not be exceeded”
Yep - I believe lies told by Ford ;-) I think payload is about 100lbs higher on the Santa Cruz but for what it's worth when you get "up there" it's probably utility trailer time....
@@Scotty_in_Ohio Agree, Here is what I have confirmed so far:
The Hyundai Santa Cruz limited AWD max payload is 1411 lbs the Base models 1750 lbs, I believe just front wheel drive.
The Santa Cruz in all trims has automatic leveling rear suspension that keeps the front suspension from lifting up and the rear sagging with heavy loads thus helping distributing weight from the rear to the front.
Max payload of Ford Maverick is 1500lbs or lower depending on which model.
Headlights gotta suck at night time
Why do they all seem to compare the size to the Ridgeline? The sizes are apples to oranges. Of course the Ridgeline trunk is bigger.
I finally got to see one of these IN PERSON... Man, the bed is just so dam small. My current 2011 Ford Ranger has a 6' bed, and it DWARFS the Santa Cruz bed. Which is just to bad, and the rest of the Santa Cruz is really nice. I would put it on the top of my shopping list if they made a version with a 6' bed. (How hard could that really be? Just add another 2' of length to the bed...). Also, it's amazing how 'slit like' the rear window really is. I'm 6'-4", so my head is near the top of the cabin, yet I can't see the bed when I look back because the slit rear window is so narrow. Really makes for a very 'cave like' interior...
Haven't seen your review of the interior but I see a Lot of dust on the shinny gloss materials, yuk! I wish Hyundai made three sizes, Mini, Medium & Jumbo, I think this design would look even better if it was much larger. The cargo bed is pretty much useless as far as I'm concerned, cant even fit a regular size bicycle in it.
Are there really a lot of people that want this type of (Truck/car) vehicle?
Seems to be, there’s a ton of pre-orders for the Maverick.
YES!!! Maybe not out in Antlers, Arkansas, but us “city folk” like it.
@@MattMaranMotoring I am not an expert, however the Ford trucks have a legacy/reputation and as you point out the Maverick is less expensive (at least the base price, though as you point out there is a difference in features and warranty). I think Hyundai is better known for other products (cars and SUVs), and I don't think this Hyundai vehicle will have the same draw/panache as the Ford truck which I think is better looking though I realize that is subjective. The front is impressive and striking on the Hyundai as you point out, though somehow not "truck" like. The cover on the trunk bed on the Hyundai is a very good feature.
Maybe on one of your weekly updates, you can update us in several months that comparable sales for the Maverick vs the Santa Cruz.
@@MattMaranMotoring Keep in mind they (Ford) isn't building ANY Mavericks for "inventory" everyone is a "pre-order" (at least that's what I've been told and confirmed by my dealer where I had a reservation in on one).
I'd temper commenters enthusiasm with what "daddy" Doug DeMuro said about the Santa Cruz - he doesn't see it being a success based on what happened to the Baja. Although I own a Santa Cruz I'm actually inclined to agree with Doug - the Santa Cruz at least is trying to appeal to folks that "didn't know they wanted a truck" or as I put it "Gardening Grannies". I owned a 2018 F-150 XLT and very, very rarely used all of the bed space, it was difficult to park in parking garages (I couldn't park downtown Pittsburgh at most places) and it rode like (well) a truck. The Santa Cruz fits my needs pretty well and when I need to buy a bunch of stuff that doesn't fit in the bed I can use my utility trailer.
I'll bet that Maverick will make it 8 years or longer - I'd like the see the Santa Cruz exist for a while but I'm not too sure it will.
The gas mileage totally kills this for me. I'd expect a lot more truck capability for 19mpg
ua-cam.com/video/RDRTN6Ys6h0/v-deo.html
Go to 10:08 and you see this guy is averaging 29 mpg in south Florida.
I feel the guy reviewing the truck was literally turning it on, punching it, recoding for 20 minutes then shutting it off. Plus alot of idol... the guy in the link I showed you said he got 36 mpg on a 300 mile trip.
on my 2nd tank of my limited i averaged 29.7 mpg in town and not driving it like a prius, and only 34.50 to fill up, not too shabby
Kinda looks like the old Subaru Baja!
When you see one in person it's much, much larger - that said I would have loved it if they sold this in bright yellow with silver lower cladding and fender flares ;-)
I loved the Baja! This is my perfect vehicle.
The bed is only 4 ft and with the cover you get 3ft… kind of sad 😞
Bed size will kill a lot of sales. Maverick seems to have better bed length.
Do a night drive with it!
The LED headlights are VERY good - they do a great job without throwing too much light up at on-coming traffic - the auto high beams feature works but it's not as good as other cars I've owned that had it (2017 Ford Edge Sport was great at that and with the auto wipers) - the ones on this don't suck - just not as good.
In Fairness the other reviews just state that its the Best Driver assist system from Kia/Hyundai...But....but you are showing proof is not as great vs just sayin.
It seems to make me a bit "sea sick" I have the Santa Cruz Limited and Matt is spot-on - I keep the lane keeping on but have used the more advanced "self driving" feature very little. The other driving aids are pretty good - they don't annoy you "too much" the lane departure warning beeps get a bit much when you're on country roads.

41 grand for that is ridiculous
The prices are pretty close when you equip/option them out vs. the Maverick - and dealers are asking way over sticker when the Mavericks are due to arrive (partly due to the fact there will not be any inventory units produced - only reserved or ordered ones) - the new F-150 XL for $29k DON'T EXIST - if you can find an XL it'll be a lot closer to $40k than you'd think

This is the cutest trucklet for the ladies. For new mom's with baby buggies, young families with tonneau tote for bills and trikes for the kids.
For weekend camping and tote cooler. Grandma and her lady friends for picnic and outings and shopping.
It’s hard to believe that this is the same company that came to America with the second to worst vehicles ever produced…and it would’ve been the worst if not for the YUGO. No company has ever turned their products from worst to best like Hyundai has. Plan on buying a Genesis GV80 Prestige next year.
Hyundai has lost its mind. They perfect something like an Elantra GT hatch that has a proven customer base given its competition, don't bother marketing it at all, then throw it away, and this is what they think will sell. I know it's apples and oranges, but it seems like the marketing department is suffering from a lack of focus.
Looks like a cross between a Subaru brat and a honda Ridgeline....
Santa "I identify as a truck" Cruz.

Yeahhhh….. the front looked amazing….. but as soon as he walked tours the side view….. it’s HIDEOUS….. Looks like a funky little hatchback….. NO GOOOOOD
These won’t even be for sale in 2 years . Way overpriced, you can get Tacoma for basically some money . Big fail 🤷♂️
The Ridgeline is more expensive and it’s been around for a while.
@@MattMaranMotoring the Ridgeline is a much better useful size
My feeling is this is going to not last for sale very long just like the Subaru Baja little truck
That was my point
Matt says it handles miles better than the Tacoma. I saw one in the metal the other day. That bed is SMALL.
for now, it's the fastest selling new car in the US -- it recently dethroned the Corvette as formerly #1.
I priced out a 2021 Ford Ranger 4 door XLT nicely equipped with tow package $36K sticker
Much better option IMHO
total chick car
Funny my wife never wants to drive mine ;-)
Ew
Not bad for a first try. Koreans have plenty to learn.
I just bought the SEL Premium and am a little under impressed with the tech. There are two different lane keeping assists and both wander in the lane. The one on the steering wheel does not beep every time you hit a lane marker and wanders slightly less but is still spooky. It has been helpful when I was messing with the radio on the highway and will go around gentle curves like you find on the highway but be warned if on a sharp turn on a smaller road it suddenly lets go and could put you in the ditch. At the moment I am not sure if forward brake assist is working on my vehicle as I have not gotten it to come on or even give me a warning even though I have activated it in settings. Also I don't believe it will brake in reverse when backing out of a parking lot spot though it does beep to let me know a car is passing there. My 2017 Infiniti Q50 gave me much more confidence in the safety department even though it didn't have lane assist. I also wish like mad that trims other than the top Limited had adaptive cruise control. My friends Mazda has it and it is nothing special. It also won't wireless charge my phone but some others worked so that could be a phone compatibility issue.
On the positive side this thing is quite nimble and quick. I like sport mode in traffic especially in the city for quick changes in traffic. I did a very sudden stop and turn into a higher driveway which I would not have tried with my heavier feeling and lower Infiniti and this thing just flew into that parking lot without a problem. Nice job with the brakes and handling Hyundai. Did I mention there is no good place for sunglasses or change in this thing. Not well thought out in that department. Also that underseat storage in the rear seat makes it so there is no room for groceries on the floor so I took the thing out and also that jack in all that foam takes up too much room so that is under the front seat now.
Overall really comfortable ride and fun drive and getting lots of positive comments from people. I think woman in particular like the little ute. just a bit irritated with the tech and smaller things so far.
How are the headlights at night can you see good with them was thinking about buying one but the lights got me thinking stay away
