For every job interview I went to there were 300 to 500 candidates applying. I left Long Island because of this and took my degree in mathematics to somewhere else where they took me seriously. I now have the best job in the world!

Just finished watching. Unemployment in the Construction industry dwarfs any other career, but yet we are ignored again. What strikes me as odd about this whole mess is that we were warned about this scenario back in 1992 by a very smart man, and we all ignored him. The answer to our jobs crisis is so simple, yet we ignore it.

Yep got laid off right around this time too. Very hard, but we made it through and are better off because of the experience.

“...Most people, including family, were VERY hostile to me - I found out Americans are ADDICTED to class structure and money...”
The same entrenched social class system is prevalent in Canada as well. I lost my job about 9 years ago (thankfully I’m working now) and was basically shunned by peers and friends.

I can only imagine for people who have especially lived these lives its all the more harder for them to except this. I know spirits are crushed. Just don't forget who you are! It's not exactly your fault. There is only solutions, not problems. No matter what my living conditions I know who I am.

The new "American Dream" is hoping to hell that you can survive. A successful American business is now being able to keep your doors open for another month.
I had a very successful fine art career after I left CBS TV. Now, there is no fine art industry left to speak of. Every artist that I know is now broke and all the galleries that carried my paintings are closed and gone in Aspen, Vail, Taos etc.
The really horrible reality is: the collapse is still just getting started ...

I count myself lucky that when I started college in 2005 I decided to focus my education so that I could work overseas. Straight out of college I'm making a good middle class salary. The people here ask me "so, when are you going back to America?" and I just laugh. Why go back? What's there to go back to?

Was it Obama or Romney who ran a company that outsourced thousands of jobs overseas?
Was it Obama or Romney that advocated for less teachers? You know, teachers? Those people who educate this country so we can have the skills and knowledge to be competitive in the global market?

They are what Heinlein argued against, they specified, then gave up because of pride via their college degrees. If they learned new skills, if they started a business, they would not be stuck. Heck, there's money to be made in blue collar, there is currently a shortage of gunsmiths, electricians, welders and machine shop people. If you can't get into a vocational school or JC, you can learn industrial arts through AGI's video courses.

I wish I could shake your hand.
I'm one of those people, although I have my own business and work from home. Thankfully I can do other things, like make leather items and sell them online. I can also do gunsmithing. Currently I am also learning machine shop, how to weld, and other stuff, thanks to AGI's video course series.
Way too many people have become specific, they should generalize, and should have their own businesses.

BTW I wrote See ya in the unemployment line out of pure disgust from SOME of the comments I read here. I don't wish that on anyone - if for no other reason than that would mean more ppl out of work means more jobs went overseas & more ppl suffering. My brother has 2 college degrees & works in Loews.I dont feel as bad for him as I do my friends/family who worked in a mill for 38 yrs for it to close. Who wants to hire a 57 yr old machine worker? Where is your empathy for your fellow man?

Now,all overseas! Our weld & machine shops are GONE!My aunt is 53,learned a new "skill set" just to be told she dont have the experience! You really think ppl worked for 36 YRS,just woke up & said 'I want to be lazy now!?'SMH! I live on long island...there are plenty of jobs. You make sacrifices and do whatever you can to make ends meet. these people don't know what it's like to actually struggle. they got slapped with a taste of it and boo hoo "no jobs" learn to live within your means....

While it is true that you dont know how to struggle when you get a well paid job just after finishing college, I still find it tragic and provoking when your so-called friends do not want to have anything to do with you as soon as you get unemployed while they are lucky enough to keep their own jobs.
It shows a very sad aspect of human nature where people have the need to feel superior to others even if this is only circumstantial and short lived.
In the UK people from London are portraid as being cold and distant, because they dont need anyone or want to know anyone( as they say in Belfast). Yet in places like Hull with a lot of unemployment and very few jobs around it is very easy to get in touch with people, everyone is open to talk to you.

    "we lived a fairytale life..."
so did alot of other people. hence the current situation. income was like a drug for these people, they really new it was too good to really be true but they just liked it too much. the security, the toys, the prestige, the lifestyle, everything was just too intoxicating. economists will look back on the 80's and 90's and mark it as the first national scale studygroup in human greed and its implications on the law of diminishing returns.

This is what you get America (and not only america but the whole of the west) for oppressing the Muslims all over the world. in Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine etc.. and my country Somalia. I hope and pray to Allah (swt) that your situation will get worse. You deserve this, and insha allah it will soon come to Europe and all allies who are fighting Islam.

I guess your not very educated in order for you to be saying this. First find out who Allah is. Seriously, if you don't have nothing good to say, you might as well just stay silent. Allah is the One and Only God. He is the God who created you and every single human being on this Earth. He created the bees, the sun, the moon, the oceans. Ask yourself a question...How did you come into this Earth? Who gave you those eyes to see with and that mouth to speak with and those legs to walk with?

I don't think they hire you due to your apparent lack of grammatical skills.
