The investigation was flawed. Newsday is not reporting that the large majority of agents passed their tests with flying colors. It’s a very small percentage that failed. Today’s buyer don’t just show up to a real estate office. They go on Zillow and they tell the realtors what they want to see. They know every house that’s for sale. It’s impossible for any one agent to stop a buyer from seeing any home. The idea that an agent is able to block buyers from knowing a house is for sale is preposterous and false.

The law enforcement agencies need to prosecute such discriminatory activities. The evidence is clear. Upon conviction fine the living xxxx out of them. The blatant, disgusting hypocrisy inherent in the various "apologies" or "explanations" or however you choose to characterize the behaviors of these real-estate agents as well as their employers is shameful at best. To me, its blatantly obvious to anyone who viewed this video that prejudice is alive and well in the USA. The only difference is that in today's world, versus previous generations, such people are sneaks because they know or should know that not only is it ethically and morally wrong, its illegal.
It's fucked up, the only color that should have mattered was green. I do think that in the age of Zillow this is probably less of an issue. The last two homes I purchased I found on Zillow, the real estate agent did not help me find the homes.
With the two older ladies with the Pre approval letters. The agent was supposed to tell the lady to get Pre approved as well but that just shows how racist she is, went “Out her way” to show her TWO houses smh
If your a Realtor ftom long island read this: you will continue to get testers so my advice to you is if you are racist get out of the business. Realtors have to have high integrity...if you dont have any you dont deserve a license.
More than 90% of the realtors tested passed the test. That’s why it took them three years. They couldn’t find enough bad realtors. This investigation was a fraud. Newsday refuses to show all the videos of the great realtors who passed the test. With these tests you will never get 100% who comply. The real story is the majority of agents are not racists. Newsday should compensate all the good agents who passed for wasting their time. Those were hours wasted on a fake buyer. Agents don’t get paid salaries. It’s not fair to over test good agents. Seriously the good ones should get paid for their time if they are found to be compliant with the fair housing laws.
This happened to me in 1987 when my husband and I purchased a house in Central Islip. As the agent whose office was located in East Islip, I told her that I liked the houses on that area. She said no I’m going to take you to a neighborhood that is more “integrated”. We purchased a brand new house for $129,999 in Central Islip. I had no idea that I was being “steered” to a Hispanic and black neighborhood. My neighbors are great but our house is valued much less than the houses in East Islip, Islip, Hauppauge and Smithtown. So years later, I realized that we could have purchased a house in East Islip for the same amount as I did in Central Islip. I still own my house in Central Islip but if I were to sell I would first file a lawsuit for racial discrimination for “steering”.
They should investigate Seminole County, Orange County, Osceola County Agents from Coldwell Banker, Remax, and many of them have Caucasian and Hispanic Agents who discriminate against Afro-American Natives that have 8 generations in the State of Florida are racial steering, lying about homes that have contracts when they don't and providing down payment assistance programs to whites but not black Americans. They only work hard to get only white and Hispanic buyers' interest over Afro-Americans of descent families with professional lives like everyone else.
What blew my mind was a few of the discriminating agents weren't even white/non-hispanic. Reminds me of the Indian dude from Chippendales getting sued for denying blacks when he was a dark-skinned immigrant. Needless to say, whenever he thought his success would take him to the next level, a good ol' MAGA'er was there to remind him of "his place".
Asians, Indians and Mexicans are some of the most racist people against black people that you would ever find. I feel there needs to be footage of ONLY black people, because the hate and discriminations is WORSE for us!!!!
??? I found more democrats to be racist. They started the KKK. Democrats created the Jim Crow laws. Democrats voted against allowing blacks people to vote.
Had the pre-qualification letter 10 years ago in May 2014 and made the trip to Albany, NY from Atlanta to meet with who I hoped was a well-vetted female agent. Made the trip for nothing after all because she cancelled out on me claiming she needed an 'updated' letter despite the bank letter being less than 30 days old. Really had high hopes and less than 4 years later her realty company got bought out by another company. Ended up going with another route but I experienced same phenomena as around the 3:00 mark.
one thing I've learned if you want to live somewhere and are concerned with whether the schools are any good, what the crime statistics are there, etc, you can't depend on your real estate agent to provide you that information because they can't. And if ethnic/racial makeups of neighborhoods have no impact on home values why (10-15 years ago) when I was a real estate agent was that always one of the first questions potential buyers asked me "what kind of people live around here?" "are the schools around here any good?" "what are the crime rates in this neighborhood." I had to get good real quick at providing BS answers that wouldn't get me in trouble with the licensing agency.. but buyers always wanted to know those things. Always.
Buyers need to learn to do their own footwork and investigations. There are plenty of people leaving reviews about schools their neighborhoods, etc. etc. You can also do personal drives to these areas during all different times of the day, go to the local stores and surrounding areas. This is what I did, so I didn't have to trust any agent to tell me potential lies or to steer me because I was black!!!
It’s one thing if a buyer wants to know these things, it’s another if the real estate agent is steering different buyers and lying to them. Treating buyers differently based on race is wrong and illegal period.
fair housing act was signed in 1968 act this bullsh!t is still happening. "laws are nothing but words on paper until you get caught breaking them". Baltimore got called out for these practices as well.
If you want to fix the alleged problem, consolidate all the Long Island school districts into one school district and give families school vouchers so they can choose which schools the children will attend. When families have a free choice of schools that removes all discrimination. One unified school district and free choice is the answer then their will not be a perception of discrimination. When schools must compete for students the quality of education improves for everyone!!!
Hey ignorant one.. I'm black and moved into an expensive all white neighborhood in Nassau. I own 1 of the nicest homes and I take care of it very well. My white neighbors respect me and often ask for help with their property. Our home values have gone up $500k in 6 years.. it's not the race of a person it's what kind of person they are... they're are a few white ppl who don't take care of their yard and property to my standards. @@AskAW I have no clue but if I had to guess most of this isn't redlining its just realtors sending people listings tryn to get them to buy so they can get a check. It's a law of numbers the agent knows predominantly minorities have harder time getting a loan bc of low credit income etc.. probably got screwed many times.. the agent should ask the same to both customers to be qualified
Interestingly, they still behaved like blatant racists even though the testers were equal with respect to income and credit score. Assuming that minorities will, all things being equal, still have a harder time getting a loan is because they are aware of the equally complicit and racist loan industry. At the end of the day, the narrative about personal responsibility and pulling yourself up by your bootstraps comes down to centuries of unearned advantages doled out by racist gatekeepers
That's why I left LI 50 years ago. My wife and I have lived in a thoroughly integrated community for the past 40 + years and all members of our community are better for it. The diversity is wonderful. If someone doesn't fit in its die to their behavior - not, for example, because of their ethnicity or faith.
I agree this is crazy! But, and I'm not being coy, has the same test been done when the agent is a member of a minority? It would be part of the picture, right? Just curious...
I think this is an excellent study and video. I do have a serious, honest question, however. There are many groups who WANT to remain in homogenous communities and I don't think there is anything wrong with it. For example Orthodox Jews want to remain within walking distances to synagogues. Latinos seem to like being near each other, particularly when many of them don't speak English well and want and need the support each other's families can provide. Other groups may feel the same way. The Amish, for example. Why is it WRONG to keep communities homogenous if that is what they want -- not for discriminatory purposes, but simply for a quality of life style that is important to them? I agree that if someone from a different group wants to move in, they should be encouraged to do so and that is fine, but what would be wrong with steering families from those particular groups into neighborhoods where they know they will feel be able to meet their particular needs? It's like the government has completely taken over everyone's lifestyles and tells them how to live and how they can't live. Neighborhoods can be homogenous without being racist or hateful. Does the law recognize this and accommodate it? In the past in this country we used to have italian neighborhoods, puerto rican neighborhoods, Jewish neighborhoods, irish catholic neighborhoods, black neighborhoods, etc. Some (perhaps much) of this was forced and that was definitely not good so to that extent I respect and believe in the fair housing laws. But some was not. Some was and is by choice. Just like people choose who they want to marrry, who they want to spend time hanging out with as friends, what careers they want to pursue, and a host of other choices, why shouldn't people be permitted to choose into what type of neighborhood they want to live? As long as newcomers aren't excluded from moving into neighborhoods (which was and I think, remains, the purpose of fair housing laws), why is it wrong to steer people INTO neighborhoods if they want to live in a place where a particular characteristic is dominant? It seems to me that the way these laws are written and enforced has terrible unintended consequences and lowers the cultural appeal and happiness of many Americans.
Thank you. I had to comment to a group that this documentary was recommended to that we seem to be forgetting that "my people", my single self included have had to move various times throughout the decades because.......things changed. You shouldn't have to but.....always be prepared to move if you don't like it, whatever it is. Furthermore, there is nothing "racist" about the desire to live around those that enjoy the same standards of peace, order, cleanliness, safety and more. Nothing racist about it at all.. And based on my experience in one particular case, it wasn't necessarily the new neighbors that caused any issues, it was their relatives from the old 'hood that came to visit on the weekends that brought their "ways" with them. So there's that too.
@@guesswhoscomingtoyoutube can you be more specific about your question, please? Gentrification isn't by definition an issue of race but can often become one or be perceived as one.
Racism is certainly an issue in our great land, It always was, have any of you out there given back your properties to the Native American Indians who flourished here before the great scourge of Immigrants. NEWSDAY❤: WHY Aren't YOU SHOWING SENIOR PROBLEMS, DID YOU SEE SENIOR ABUSE VIDEOS ON UTUBE,?? ❤ THERES HUNDREDS OF RACIST BUT HARDLY ANY HELP FOR SENIORS.
I'm opposed to racist prejudice and placing people in different communities based on race, but people like me who lived in a poor area in Queens where there was crimes, gang violence, and not great education opportunities there and it was filled with Hispanics and some black people. Me and my family were lucky enough to move out of there and live in a nice suburban area in long island. Me and my family are hispanics and we don't really want to live in a Hispanic or black community because there cultures aren't really great when it comes to traditions, parenting, teaching there kids to be responsible and to work hard to achieve there dreams. Now compare to white and asian communities where there cultures teach responsibility, hard work, taking care of oneself and there family. So I want to find out if these realtors are doing this just so they can keep these nice neighborhoods nice, safe and the best or are they doing stuff like this because they're prejudice. If you want to see a neighborhood that use to be a nice neighborhood until certain group of people moved in and ruined the neighborhood look at rossdale. In the 70s it was filled with white people and the neighborhood looked nice, clean, and safe. Now rosedale looks so different today.
That’s where you’re dead wrong. You’re judging entire classes of people based on a negative experience you had living in a poor neighborhood as a child & separating whites & Asians as the “better” class because of it. I’ll tell you the flip side - I grew up in hick town in the south, predominantly white, poor, broken homes, extremely violent, & racist where most of the whites I knew were on unemployment, welfare and drugs. I am a black/Hispanic woman & being that, I have the misfortune to know what it’s like to grow up in a place where people that were doing worse things than I could even imagine doing said the same things you said on this comment about me, even though I grew up in a loving 2 parent home with immigrant parents that instilled great morals, values, and the importance of education & hard work in me on a daily basis, therefore, as opposed to judging the entire race on my negative experience as you have just done, I have a deeper understanding that there are will always be some nasty people of every race, color, & nationality, but they don’t define them as a whole. I suggest you widen your horizons and stop viewing the world from this type of narrow “woe is me” mindset that you seem to have. And as a side note, I find it extremely sad that you yourself are Hispanic & know the values we are raised on, & the values & importance we place on honest, hard work & family & yet somehow you hold on to resentment & a negative opinion about your own people based on the relatively small amount of Hispanics you were raised around compared to the MUCH larger population of us that reside outside of queens.
it's like that because of redlining. simple as this. minorities are funneled into poor neighborhoods. Poor neighborhoods means less property tax. less property tax means less opportunities and not enough funding in education. lack of education leads to "crime." it's a cycle that breeds racism and needs to be addressed. you are ignorant
I agree 💯, look at the neighborhoods on Long island with the most crime then look up the demographics of those areas (Hempstead, Brentwood, Freeport) 🥴
This is not racist . There is no hate. But prejudice and stereotypes are driving this. Very interesting how something I never thought of, is a real large part of the segregation of our society. Think about why we all see the way we do.
Neighbors telling relators not to sell to blacks is a form of hate. Also, they could just flatout not want to see blacks mixed in white communities. You dont actually know their true intentions and feelings.
@@FlyHighLikeTy Exactly, it is definitely racism. And not to mention, it’s illegal for these real estate agents to even entertain those conditions by selling homeowners.
@@livnsouthflorida thats the point, certain race of people dont even need a pre-approval. Even if people of color have an pre-approval they're "steered" to more "diverse" neighborhoods.
Humans self-segregate and don't want to live in nasty neighborhoods. These agents are a reflection of the wants of the population, not the other way around.
The problem with this statement is that as real estate agents, we know the law & we are bound by it, therefore, we are prohibited from taking certain actions that will require us to break those laws even if it is at the request of the homeowners selling in those communities. These agents, either took it upon themselves or upon the request of sellers in those areas broke those laws with their actions of discrimination, making them equally & possibly more culpable for the segregation as the population because they are the ones mainly in charge of the type of population that is able to buy & live in those areas.
These agents are telling the clients the truth, it is what it is. What should they do, lie, and tell, the clients the schools are are great, when there not? Freedom of speech, not discrimination. If people are paying property taxed over 20K, they deserve to know where they are moving into. Im a former Long Islander myself from Brentwood, I moved to South Western PA; thank God I left!
The problem is they’re telling the truth to only the white clients. You don’t think everyone would want to know about gang/ drug activity, bad schools, etc.??
The problem isn’t that. The problem is when a person has the same job, similar education, similar income, similar desires in a neighborhood and are of one race, but get treated completely differently than a person with the same profile, but is another race, that is a problem. Is having Black, Hispanic, and Asian engineers with accountant spouses along with their children going to ruin the neighborhood?

This is what the REALTOR association SHOULD be doing, vetting and rating every agent for equal treatment. I tell you one thing - I hope Frederick Wallenmaier gets RICH from treating his clients the same! and KEvin Geddie goes POOR
They’re supposed to loose their license the same way that they robbed people of their opportunities
Then go let the riff raff live in your back your hypocrite. You would be the first to move out! No matter what color they are, black, white, green purple, etc.
Depends who the culprit is?
As an agent I am not only embarrassed of our Long Island but they need to hold them all accountable. ITs really sad that this happens
Then go let the riff raff live in your back your hypocrite. You would be the first to move out!
You think your going to do different but you sell a home to a Latino or Black in a white neighborhood and, Whitey will start calling your home and threatening your life and tell you, you're being watched, see how better you sleep at night after that one. But if you put a white people in a black and Latino area it's just gentrification you know it's white people making smart choices.
The law enforcement agencies are also perpetrators of this behavior 😣
It's fucked up, the only color that should have mattered was green.
I do think that in the age of Zillow this is probably less of an issue. The last two homes I purchased I found on Zillow, the real estate agent did not help me find the homes.
Sad but true
Clearly you don’t personally know any realtors
As realtor, that guy said “ mini UN nation “ 🤦🏻♂️
If you integrate all the properties values will plummet
At least the south their racist to your face, the north they act like their not
I'm not surprised. The government should enforce the shit out of the Fair Housing Act! Put more money into these investigations
The real estate agents did a good job. If you let anyone move into the community, they will run it down slowly but surely.
People like who???????
what an ignorant ass comment
Tell us ur racist w/o telling us ur racist
Moron
What's next? You're going to tell us about freedoms in America?
I moved to long Island from the West coast and realized how North East is so much more racist.
one thing I've learned if you want to live somewhere and are concerned with whether the schools are any good, what the crime statistics are there, etc, you can't depend on your real estate agent to provide you that information because they can't.
Move out of Long Island, the real estate is old, the people are old and the taxes are high.
fair housing act was signed in 1968 act this bullsh!t is still happening. "laws are nothing but words on paper until you get caught breaking them". Baltimore got called out for these practices as well.
Buy anywhere on long island. There is limited space on Long Island soon this place will be for the well off!
Well my Agent kept it 💯
This has probably been going on for half a century.
Longer
The question is what is being done about all this routine racism?
If you want to fix the alleged problem, consolidate all the Long Island school districts into one school district and give families school vouchers so they can choose which schools the children will attend. When families have a free choice of schools that removes all discrimination. One unified school district and free choice is the answer then their will not be a perception of discrimination. When schools must compete for students the quality of education improves for everyone!!!
Taxes would be cheaper too I think with one school district.
They don't want that. They want status quo to continue. Patronage too.
why would i want my kids with people who i dont think raise their kids well? serious questions
“Unless u wanna start your car to buy crack” yea Boys she’s gone

You can make another doc of this for Atlanta,, Right?

I grew up down the street from Wyandanch, died when that lady talked about it
Huh? I'm white and i had to get pre-approval before i could look at houses. That's standard.
I am paying good money to live in a safe neighborhood SO WHAT'S WRONG WITH THAT ?
We all are my friend. We all are.
Maybe people of other races would like to be able to pay good money to live in a safe neighborhood as well.
@@josephineandemilyperform They are going to ruin it, simple as that.
Smh.
What’s a safe neighborhood? What makes a neighborhood safe?
I just want to know if they tested minority realtors and see the if they get similar results
What percent of real estate agents are minorities?
@@AskAW I have no clue but if I had to guess most of this isn't redlining its just realtors sending people listings tryn to get them to buy so they can get a check. Id sell an alien the White House if I could haha but the reason I said that is I think they would get similar results no matter the race of the realtor. The stupidity in this video is mind blowing for sure

I have family in Elmont. It’s not a bad neighborhood, very middle class. I’m not sure what you’re talking about
School districts is the new tag line for race
It's a law of numbers the agent knows predominantly minorities have harder time getting a loan bc of low credit income etc.. probably got screwed many times.. the agent should ask the same to both customers to be qualified
Interestingly, they still behaved like blatant racists even though the testers were equal with respect to income and credit score. Assuming that minorities will, all things being equal, still have a harder time getting a loan is because they are aware of the equally complicit and racist loan industry. At the end of the day, the narrative about personal responsibility and pulling yourself up by your bootstraps comes down to centuries of unearned advantages doled out by racist gatekeepers
audio too low
There goes the ....
This is not new. Long Island is hard core racist when it comes to housing. So glad to see major real estates companies SUED!!! 2023!
The first one in is northern Westchester not LI
What happen to the agents?
And to think I was gonna to buy a house out there smh glad I didnt...long island is racist asf
What percent of real estate agents are minorities?
Racism doesn’t work like that. Only way that would happen is if that person is paid by racist to intenionally discriminate.
@@AskAW White 70.3%
Hispanic or Latino 13.0%
Asian 6.8%
Black or African American 5.2%
That would be fine if the buyer requested to be in a certain neighborhood if not the realtor has no place in making that decision for them
@@dananero5462 .....and there are 100s of other realtors to choose from. The buyer is not obligated to use any particular one.
so what about gentrification
@@guesswhoscomingtoyoutube can you be more specific about your question, please? Gentrification isn't by definition an issue of race but can often become one or be perceived as one.
Racism is certainly an issue in our great land, It always was, have any of you out there given back your properties to the Native American Indians who flourished here before the great scourge of Immigrants. I think that would be a great story for Newsday. Funny how this is never mentioned. My opinions are my own and do not reflect on the agency I work for. Thank You.

Matthew 12:34 - O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
Such ignorance.
RIGHT! There's a reason people leave!
it's like that because of redlining. simple as this. minorities are funneled into poor neighborhoods.

They're prohibited by law to mention anything about the neighborhoods and schools. They must stick to questions about the property itself.
But they are only taking the yt testers that info. They are shuffling the blk testers into those same neighborhoods. Why?
The problem is they’re telling the truth to only the white clients. You don’t think everyone would want to know about gang/ drug activity, bad schools, etc.??
We don't miss you
The problem isn’t that.
