Thanks just done rear pads on my F45, 2er active tourer, your video helped me out a lot. F45 has a male peg to drive the handbrake, no need to 'go in with the 45!' Just turn between your fingers. 7mm allen key for slide bolts, screw them right out. Unclip the hose & the caliper can sit on the box the new pads came in.
I feel like I owe you money. Sat here in a workshop in the UK hoping someone with a computer to wind it back was going to pick up. And no need!! Thanks man
Outstanding video!! I was really wary about going anywhere near the electronic brake without a scan tool but, with your help and advice, I had the job done in little over an hour without rushing and the brakes work perfectly without any error codes or warning lights.Thank you!!
Great tutorial. Just got my first BMW and was a little nervous that my time moonlighting as a mechanic were over. Not nearly as complicated as I anticipated. Thank you!
You're welcome- there are also tricks that you can put it in service mode from the drivers seat too. I know how on Ford, Porche, and VW, but not sure on BMW. I'm sure there's a way though.
I have told people before there is no reason to change brakes sensors because it's nothing but a ground wire. I thought I was the only person who didn't. Great video and great minds think alike.
2023 and my Z4 brake indicator light is on. checked the front and had literally brand new barely worn pads. So I need rear pads..sigh. I ordered and replaced the front cause I already bought em from Slamazon, so ordered the rear ones after watching your video. Next project is to change em and I was wondering HTF to do that without the brake scan tool to set it in maintenance mode. THANKS to you I now have the knowledge and can say a giant F.U. to the BMW Dealers $1900 brake job they quoted me.
You make it look so easy Brian! I'm still working up my confidence to do my brakes, even though I've watched it being done dozens of times. Thanks for the video.
Thank you Brian. Love the video. My son just bought a BMW 535I today. Your video will help me saving some $$$. Don't need it right now due to under warranty but will be great for future needs. Thank you and keep up the good work!
Excellent video, I told my mother in law not to take to BMW because of how much they were going to charge her, and when I took the wheel off, I was a little intimidated, and almost regretted trying to help. Your video made it very simple and easy to understand. Thanks
Thanks Brian! Yep, all of my first time jobs on my 535 is intimidating. However, following each job, it's a huge confidence builder. You are correct, I can do it, especially with the great video that you made which contains your step-by-step narrative, including resetting the electric motor manually. Once again, great video!!! You had covered all of the bases by mentioning the tricks and potential traps. I have to find the torque specs for the caliper bolts as I'm not an arm wrestling champ but I'm working on that too!

Wow that car has a bunch of neat sensors. I've never heard of a brake pad sensor but it sounds so logical and easy to put one in there it makes a lot of sense. I really like that car except for the electric e-brake. Give me a cable and mechanical control any day. Great video, learned a lot, liked!
Excellent video, high image quality, technical details and explanation, even though my English is very bad. Please note that you did not change the pheno sensor, when should it be changed? Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge
Thanks for the help! Just change my brakes and rotors on my 2015 X3. Aside from the wrench slipping and punching myself in the face, it went pretty smooth.
Hi, Many thanks for going to the trouble of putting this video together with a very good picture and audio, it is very much appreciated. In the end my job was made easier by the fact that BMW on X5 F15 2.0L Diesel S-Drive (Australian model) have relocated the electric motor away from either rear calliper ... I suspect this might be the same for other X5 F15 Models, but I don’t know. The BMW X5 F15 2.0L Diesel S-Drive (Australian model) also use two E-Torx E14 bolts to attach the rear calliper on its mounting bracket. It’s the same on the front too ... and both are single calliper pistons. I can’t recommend it but I had no trouble using my standard 14mm socket to remove them. I’d anticipate as you move up the model range the bigger callipers will use bigger bolts. I also changed the rotors and on this BMW X5 F15 2.0L Diesel S-Drive (Australian model) they use a 5mm Hex to attach the rotor to the axel hub in addition to to the wheel nuts / lugs. Thanks again for posting the video it is very much appreciated. Regards, Matthew
I have changed rear brake pads several times (BMW electrical ebrake) and i just used a adjustable plier to push the piston back in. Never had a problem!
@6:55 any BMW scann tool "specific" (in general) will perform this. They range from $150 - $250 such as Schwaben, Foxwell (same thing just rebranded) of course the scanner can do many other things other than retracting the e-brake to change brakes. But as noted, yes, for those that dont have the scann tool then this is how you do it. However one thing to note, if your brakes get low enough to trigger the sensor in which you would have to replace it, the brake warning "may not immediately clear" when trying to reset from the Dashboard or even with a scann tool. Sometimes its would clear immediately and sometimes it takes a few miles of driving to cycle for the system to accept the "Reset".
Thank you very much for Excellent and very good clear pictures. I have a tool Autophix ES910 with special function in which i can deactivate the electric parking brake. By doing it I dont need to do the manual as you do in our video. Right?
Thank you so much, I watched 5 or 6 videos on changing breaks X5 and your video is the BEST. Also thank you for clarifying that computer is only needed to retract electric motor, and it's possible to do it with T45. Overall your video is on tripod, and so easy to watch. Thank you.
What a great video Brian. Thanks for the clear instruction and confidence. I have a BMW and a WV both with rear ebrakes. This will be very useful when I do this service. Thanks again.
This was THE MOST useful video EVER! THANK YOU!! BTW, two points I would add. 1. Once you finish with your T46, you can use a trusty on C-Clamp to pus the piston in 2. Be sure when putting the pads on that you identify the pad that connects to the brake sensor and don't accidentally put it on the left wheel.
I wanted to say thank you so much for your video. I was struggling to understand how to push back that rear piston. I have a 2021 BMW X3 with the electronic Park , and your video came in really handy today. Thank you!! thank you!! thank you!!
Just did back breaks on my Jeep. That was a lot of fun when it comes to the parking brake. It was easy, only hard part was busting moving parts free from rust. After that grease and never seize and blood.
Liked your UA-cam on 5 series hand brake, brake pad replacement clear and very informative Only flew back from dallas to Sydney Australia 17 hour flight the 2.5 hour flight to Auckland NZ I have a 2011 grand tourismo 550i Park brake warning just came on today hence watching your video thankyou
I know about trying to twist these in as I damaged the passenger rear of my RLX and now have to find a replacement from a used parts supplier, much more reasonable than the dealer and I can replace it myself...funny how you break something, then become an expert at it!!!!! Thanks again for great video footage, I have learned to research before touching these newer autos. i have found a replacement caliper assembly for just under $100, verses a new one at the dealer for almost $845, I will install after my cruise is done.
Brian, Thanks for the helpful advice on how to get this done. Got the brake pads replaced, but when I reinstalled the EPB motors, and finished up, I cannot get the EPB to now work or reset. Any thoughts? Thanks again for the great tutorial!!!
whats i'm used to do on VW is take a battery or a booster park and back probe the motor until it release completly than i compress it with the same tool you have it work fine
Had a go today, could not get the plug off of the electric motor. Tried small screwdriver without success. Didn't want to break someting so gave up! Z4 G29 blue calipers.
Oh dear, this is a great way to screw up your EPB and wind up in a ditch. I showed this to my mate who works at BMW and the look of horror on his face was priceless. You never remove the EPB servo. Connect a suitable diagnostic unit to the OBD, retract the EPB properly using the device THEN replace your pads and reset the piston. Once you re-engage the EPB is will auto recalibrate. Job done. The method in the video does not allow the ECU to recalibrate and there's a good chance your parking brake will seize up, possibly while hurting down the road.
Dude, on two occasions I have replaced my discs and rotors on my X3 F25 using this UA-camrs exact method(Many UA-cam videos out there show exact same technique for rear pad replacement on BMW X3). So far no issues, and I've done PLENTY of driving since changing the pads the non Scanner way. Today a local mechanic/brake expert who was specifically instructed/tought/given help/tipps by the local Sydney, Northern Beaches BMW service people, when he asked for their advice as he turned out NOTt to be the the Mr know-it-all self promoting brake guru.... btw, he may or may not have a Brake service centre and it may or may not be in Brookvale,..... anyhoo I mentioned this mechanic that I did my rear brakes manually as shown on this UA-cam vid(just like in Many others), and he too was shocked saying it's very dodgy/dangerous. When I asked him why? His reply was, 'Well BMW service told me to do it using a scanner'. a) I find the BMW service dept overpriced b) and not the most honest going around The 1st time I changed my rear pads manually without a scanner was three years ago, and no issues/problems yet. @@briansmobile1 I too did my rear pads this way. The elect handbrake works fine, it's just that I the cars management system would not let me reset the 'check the front Brakes message. That had to be reset using a scanner from local workshop.
good video, many thanks , job looks scary but isn't, its very simple to do. Both sides only took 30 mins. saved over 400 uk pounds doing it myself compared to main dealer. 640d m sport coupe 2014
Another video showed how that you could do it by turning the cylinder, but since I only had the adapter with 2 pins I could only try this one. And this one was great.
well, a quick comment about your method of retracting the piston into the caliper body. On european BMW's (F48 2007) the caliper is slightly different as the pins of the floating part of the caliper are just sitting on those rubber bushes.. but the issue is not that BUT the fact that no matter which way I was trying to spin that star bit the piston would not retract. So i believe to retract it manually that will still require the screw thing with the C clamp to help pushing it back. So I think, inside it is a mechanism that works through the liquid (brake fluid) similar way that hand brake works on VW.. on the piston itself there are two way of pushing it: electrically with a motor and hidraulically... now, when you try to rewind piston, this retracts using the electric motor just enough to release the disc, then everything else is processed by the emergency brake (foot brake). To retract the piston for new brake pads.. very much probably you have to release the bleeding valve so some brake fluid has to come out while you turn that star pin.. Soon I will work on the other side of the vehicle and I will procced as above.
After it sticks out from spinning the pistons in do we needs tighten it with the t45 or jst leave it like tht and it’ll work on it’s on when we place everything back together?
Brain mate can you do same thing in mk 7 vw to do rear breaks same has you done on this car or is it diffrent on vw mk7 car thanks good video mate i have done breaks rear on insignia very easy on that one electri handbreak but i am abit secred on vw mk 7 electric handbreak rear breaks any way see you soon thanks
Hello Just watched your video, but my question is, did you use any diagnostic equipment to unlock the brakes either when you started or when you finished changing the brake calipers.
Thank you for the video. It’s helped me today. You seem like a genuine car enthusiast and most definitely, a great technician. I was curious about pumping the brakes on these vehicles. I watched you do it six times but without a bleeder valve. When you compress the piston back in does that not push air into the system?
Great help thanks. Once I watched your vid a few times I had it sorted. 2nd one took me 3 hours but that was because I am so fussy and cleaned everything and sprayed caliper red. Oh and it rained. Typical in the UK. Thanks now for the front....??? Graham Liverpool UK
I am experiencing major shuddering when applying the brakes after a rear brake job where pads and rotors were replaced. BMW 2018 with electronic parking brake. Steering wheel does not shake side to side and no pulsing at the brake pedal. Shuddering happens after about 20 minutes of driving and is felt between the driver and passenger front seats. The longer you drive the more it shudders. Any ideas on what this could be and how to fix this? Prior to the brake job I had 48k miles of excellent braking. BTW the video was awesome!
Great video. My maintenance warranty is about to expire on my G12 m sport. I'm looking to do this when I upgrade the brakes. Quick question: Do you need a scan tool to reset the E-brake after reconnecting it, or will the dashboard error go away automatically?
I did this, and everything went smoothly. My only issue is that my brakes feel sluggish. Seems like the pedal goes in a lot further than it should. Any guidance? Thanks.
Thanks for the info! i have a BMW X5 for a year, now i can do my brakes with confidants, that is true Brian that the parking brake hold is real good and it has a safety feature built in it as well, the parking brake will come on automatically and it will stop the vehicle from moving if there is a door open, this was a good video
I followed all instructions and it was easy. But I didnt bleed it after the change and it seems to be fine. Not like a standard brake job I normally do. Did you bleed yours?
hey man! I'm working on a 13 m6 coupe convertible and when im turning clockwise the piston moves too. I have E-brake disengaged, and my diag scan tool doesnt have the function of retracting them either. what should I do?
Thank you, sir! This really helped and saved me about 2k. So I went to the dealership to get the brake light reset, and they said well, it should have changed automatically when you put the new sensor in. But for 80 bucks we can run a diagnostic. According to them, there is no way to reset it🤣🤣🤣 long story short saw a video and pretty much the door has to be closed and the ignition but has to be pushed once. Then you're able to get the rest options to populate. But I was like wow, they're full of crap
Get rid of those silly expensive sensors. Cut the line, strip the two ends, twist them together, and cover it with heat shrink. It's just a profit center for BMW.
I have a 2012 Volkswagen CC with electric parking brakes. I would guess it's similar to this. If you have ever gotten into one, was there anything extra or different on those cars verses this BMW? Thanks for the great vids!

Just watched your video, but my question is, did you use any diagnostic equipment to unlock the brakes either when you started or when you finished changing the brake calipers.
Thank you for the video. It’s helped me today. You seem like a genuine car enthusiast and most definitely, a great technician.
I was curious about pumping the brakes on these vehicles. I watched you do it six times but without a bleeder valve. When you compress the piston back in does that not push air into the system?
Great vid. thanks for sharing. Do you not use brake pad paste? I used to use it on my e36 M3 years ago. First time doing the brakes on the e70 X5...
Cool! I've always wondered what those assemblies look like. Haven't had the chance to work on one yet. Thanks for posting this, Brian! :)
Should my brake light have gone off cause it’s still on. Or do I need to reset it. I put a new sensor on as well.
You saved my day. And client's too. Thank you!
What a perfect explanation, I copied everything and was a piece of cake even in the -7 weather outside !!! Well done Sir
Thanks- glad you had success!
Thanks Brian, do I need to oil something?
I followed all instructions and it was easy. But I didnt bleed it after the change and it seems to be fine. Not like a standard brake job I normally do. Did you bleed yours?
Does this process, specifically the manual reset of the electronic parking brake, work on a F10 M5?
Is this method the same for the bmw i8? I'm about to do my brakes and calipers
hey man! I'm working on a 13 m6 coupe convertible and when im turning clockwise the piston moves too. I have E-brake disengaged, and my diag scan tool doesnt have the function of retracting them either. what should I do?
So you don’t neeed a 3 pin adatpor right? It’ll just go in with the reversed smooth part?
thanks, and how did you reset the brake light on the dash
Hello, from Spain, Madrid. good work, I have a bmw f10 550d from 2016, your tutorial will be very good, thank you for your work and share it ..
you are better than the dealer bro 👍
how much for a brake job like that?
If other caliper won't compress is it because I need to open the valve to release psi, or because the e-brake is not in all the way?
Milwaukee m12 battery with probes you can run caliper piston in and out depending on polarity😊
Is the e brake procedure for both sides of the rear or only one side?
@@clifft7832 this won't cause for errors to pop up?
One question: Can the caliber piston be compressed with a c-clamp...?...or does it have to be spun in...?
question? Without taking the motor apart can't you just compress the piston with a BMW scan tool?
Thanks for this will be doing the rears next week, just finished the fronts.
Great video. I have to do brakes on my kid's car, and this really helps, thank you!
I have a 2012 Volkswagen CC with electric parking brakes. I would guess it's similar to this. If you have ever gotten into one, was there anything extra or different on those cars verses this BMW? Thanks for the great vids!
