No need to have an OBD scanner tool. The parking brake actuator assembly is held with 2 bolts to the calipers. Unscrew those, undo the 2 Torx screws that connect the actuator to the piston and use that same Torx to unwind the piston (turn till you can't go any further). After that you can compress the piston like you would in any other car. Reconnect the actuator to the piston with the 2 Torx, bolt the assembly back to the calipers and just activate the parking brake. The car will unwind the piston till it makes contact and you're done.
Hey Brandon, I can’t begin to tell you how thankful I am that you made this video. I just bought a pre-owned BMW M5 and the brake light went on. I’ve always done my own breaks, but when I heard you had to use the scan machine etc. to do this and also quoted $900 by an automotive shop, I went on UA-cam. Your video saved me man. Just got all the tools/scannner on Amazon for $150. Not only do I save myself $750 extra dollars but I get tools to go along with it and a bad ass scanner! Thanks again!
Nice video. I did my wife's pads today and used ISTA as I already have it and it set the parking brake in service mode all good but then my piston tool broke so with a channel lock pliers I was able to screw the piston clockwise to retract it all the way in (took 5 mins and was somewhat tight) but that did the trick and I reassembled it all and deactivated the service mode and thankfully it worked. Im just putting this out there as added info for everyone just in case you too get in a jam. Brandon your video was so much better than my on the fly videos that I have done! Great job!
Awesome video. I have always changed my brakes but just happened to watch this before changing my BMW brakes to see if there were any tricks i needed to know about. I wouldn't have known about the electronic parking brake deal. I can see myself braking something without that knowledge and having to do the walk of shame to the dealer for more parts. You saved me. Thanks!
Hey Brandon, today I have replaced my rear brakes successfully thanks to you sharing. I appreciate you go straight to the points in our video. Thank you for excellent video and sharing our knowledge:-))
Thanks for the video man! Once the time comes I will take care of doing this on my x3. Love the fact that you hammer in people should have a scanner. Anyone who has a BMW should have a scanner, in my case I prefer ISTA. Thanks again!
The Autotel interface certainly makes things easier since you don't have to remove the brake actuator and manually turn the screw on the back then reattach the actuator to the back of the caliper, but you can do it without it. 2018 530E Xdrive
Hey Brandon thank you for excellent video. I like you go straight to job and work on till you are finish. I saved a lot money by following your video. Have a fantastic day:-))
Hi I got Bmw F10 2014 model. Need to change break pad, just wondering will it work with your device, you have includes link, and that isn’t available anymore or can you give any other device suggestions so i don’t have to do all the hassle with Electronic motor, thanks
Question: does the scan tool (particularly the EPB tool) work on Hondas and Toyotas? I've been looking for a EPB and can't find one that works on neither.
I did mine on my F10 2015, and now I get a few brake errors on the dash but it brakes just fine. Any ideas? I reset the computer and brake stuff again but still no luck.
When I torque the guide pins bolts, the pins lose their ability to float. Everything becomes rigid. The rotor still turns, but the pins only float when the bolts are loose? Am I doing something wrong?
Question: Can i leave service mode if i had no sensor connected to rear pad? I order wrong break pad kit, but im notice this to late, and i remove old sensor but now im not able to connect back anymore cuz his damage and broken. And now my Parking brake button not working at all. When i hold for 5sec nothing happen. Can pad sensor cause this problem?
I have a 2013 m6 and am about ready to do my rear brakes, i picked up an Autel 906ts...a bit overkill for changing oil and brakes but like you said, have to have one with a newer euro car. Great video, i have a question...do you have to unscrew the brake fluid cap to compress the calipers ? I watched a couple other videos on bmw’s and i do not recall anyone doing this..? I know all the brake jobs i have done on older cars that had to be done? Thanks and keep up the great videos !! Have a great day !
Any help would be appreciated: tried the manual route, but one of the 2 bolts was warped, so had to buy an OBDii tool. Put the actuator in service mode (activated, waited the few seconds with the noise, around 10 secs) and went back to press it in only to find it complete out but still attached. Now it won’t press in... any ideas? Thanks in advance
Great vid. I have a 2016 750i m sport. Is the process fairly the same. My maintenance warranty is up in June I'm planning to do my own brakes from then on.

"Just release the rear electric E-brake by sitting inside the car and pressing the [P] parking down. Light should go off. Then remove the two bolts, remove the mechanism. Reverse this process and you should be 💯. Cut the brake sensor wire and tie them together. Check ALL brake pads for wear every 3 months. You're welcome 🫡✌️ ... 🤔 hmm... I have noticed that it is, in fact, still an E-brake (Emergency/ Electric). I don't think it classifies as an "Emergency" brake anymore because it is not cable operated anymore. Cable operation gave one the possibility of coming to a safe stop by not immediately locking up the rear tires, which induced a spinout for some and a wipeout for others.
Hey man how’s it going? Just a quick question, I bought that same brand for my 2014 BMW 528i (F10) and was wondering where to find the front brakes as the ones I have are only for the rear. Any help? I’m just suspect of buying through amazon sometimes. Also you got any rotors you recommend? Thanks again
I think you can take it apart and do it manually but I would definitely not recommend that. I would definitely buy a scan tool and do it the proper way thanks😎👍
Hello, Greetings from Dublin. I did mine today(brake disks, pad and sensor) but when I did service reset on the computer I only got another 30000km. This is less than 19000 milestones. I was just wondering why this is the case? The service due indicator was showing brake pad change in 1,400km before i did the change. Great video by the way.
No need for the electronic tool as you said, just need to turn clockwise the actuator center shaft using a T45 torx until it stops. Don't spend $ on such device.

Totally agreed! I don’t have a scanner tool and used this exact procedure on my 2015 BMW 528i rear brakes and it worked like a charm.

Hi. My 2013 parking brake stopped working and the parking brake light came on. what do you recommend?
It's most likely a bad actuator or a parking brake module
This model has the actuator right on the caliper, correct?
Never replace pads without turning or replacing the rotors.

No need for the electronic tool as you said, just need to turn clockwise the actuator center shaft using a T45 torx until it stops. Don't spend $ on such device.
