Imagine being 19 years old in 1978 and hearing this classic prog rock album for the first time. And these THREE musicians were only 6-7 years older than me!! Wow!!
And this was only half the album. Side B follows with "Circumstances," the philosophical "The Trees" and closes with, IMO, the best song from Rush, their incomparable instrumental masterpiece, "La Villa Strangiato!!"
This album was their last concept album until their swan song, 'Clockwork Angels' in 2012. And that record concludes with one of their best songs, "The Garden." What a glorious musical career from The Holy Trinity!! 😇😇😇

As someone who grew up with Rush when they were considered a joke by most of the public, it’s so gratifying to see a new generation discovering them and fully recognizing their raw talent and true uniqueness. It’s high time they receive the adulation they always deserved!

    • @lewis9702

I don't think the public ever considered Rush a joke. It's just that the masses couldn't grasp such complex incredible music.

@@lewis9702 It might’ve been a regional thing, but they were definitely the punchline to more than one joke about pretentiousness. Not to mention the things said about Geddy’s voice. Sure, people didn’t get it. But that’s when people usually get petty and vicious.

indeed...by this point they had made SOME headway with 2112, but it was still a cult following really . None of my friends liked them at all...mostly because of Geddy's voice i think. oddly...once spirit of radio hit many jumped on board...as did much of the world. to me, permanent waves was the end for me...i kind of lost interest after that

It’s so weird when I here people say that. I’m from one of their favorite cities and we were with them from day one. One of the places that they first played on their first tour and came back every time after that. We loved them and they loved us. From day one San Antonio is a RUSH stronghold. The band has said many times that this is one of their favorite cities.

Grooves the God of Jamming. I like that, it has a ring to it. Shall we call this fine young man by that name, only when he plays Rush? Lol. I’m loving this guy, Pope I believe. He’s really intelligent and you kind of have to be intelligent to dig some of my generation’s music like Rush, Yes, Pink Floyd, early Genesis with Peter Gabriel, Zeppelin. The time signature changes, very complicated lyrics and excellent musicianship….I dunno, maybe it’s just me, finding the excellence almost overwhelming. It’s like I need a cigarette, as if it’s like sex, and it is. And I don’t even smoke cigarettes. Lol

"A stroke of genius", indeed, and keep in mind this was the most difficult song for them to compose and record, they followed up with Permanent Waves swearing off entire album side songs, though they did keep the epic Rush tradition with tracks like Natural Science, Jacob's Ladder and The Camera Eye; they didn't revisit a concept album until Clockwork Angels, which sadly became their final opus.

And 2, you are picking some of the very best Art Rock ever! That’s just another name for progressive Rock. I haven’t seen one other reactor who has a consistent song list even close to what you are doing. That’s why you are getting the O.G. love. We are impressed and you are doing it right.

This, for me, is my all time favorite Rush album which I find difficult to explain since Rush has had so many outstanding albums.
But this song just was complete "face melt" when I first heard it. The opening instrumental, the soaring guitars, the syncopation of insane bass and drums, the off beat, strange time signatures complete with cymbal chokes and jazz hi-hats. The transitions, lyrics that told a relevant story...
I was just like.... who plays like this and ALL three members all on the same musical page reaching limits of expertise and experimentation. And all of them barely 25 years old in '78... just wow.
I fell in love with the band when I was 12 and now, getting up there at 53, I listen and still am like man.... no other band sounded anything like this at all. Sure there were influences, but Rush goes down as the most unique hard rock band in history.
And seeing Rush reach a new audience, multiple generations, and seeing reactions like this....
I think my life and the way I am, and think, would have been vastly different if I hadn't been a pre teen lying in the floor in my bedroom in 1979 with my older brothers headphones on listening to this for the very first time.
    Weird how life works eh?
Cheers everyone and so great to see people listening in to Rush 45 years later 😎

The last part of this song: We can walk our roads together, if our goals are all the same. We can run alone and free, if we pursue a different aim. Let the truth of love be lighted. Let the love of truth shine clear. Sensibility, armed with sense and liberty, with the heart and mind united in a single perfect sphere! It's great advice to today's world!

    15:56 ... ;0 CREATE A NEW GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
there is something incredibly moving and emotional about alex's guitar-work right up, isn't there?? :) i =love= how hard-rock the first "book" is... but, "book two" - and all of the rest of the album, especially "la villa" - are soooo notable as alex's most incredible moments, it seems! (for that matter, it could be the same for geddy and neil... this was sooo much the benchmark album for all three!)

Cygnus X-1 Books one and two are not songs - they are together a story. It's bigger than us. The universe is bigger than us. We are not alone.

This was the one that broke them for long complicated pieces (pretty much my fave too...) and as annoyed as I was at them changing some over the next 4 or 5 albums (the last album I liked all the way through by them was Grace under Pressure. After that they had some good songs but no more just solid amazing albums. FWIW.

Love this song. IMHO far superior to 2112(also a classic, but I always felt was a tad overrated).

Can you go back? After being on this journey of discovery, of listening to all these great musicians. Can you go back and still enjoy Hip Hop? Where most the music is sampled by artist who can not play any instrument. With simple repetitive catch phrase lyrics. yes there are bands that operate like this as well, repetitive chorus with the same catch phrase lyrics over and over again to music that is the same three chords throughout. But does Hip Hop have a Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden, or Rush? I use to be a Big Kiss fan when I was 13 until I went to see them live, and Rush opened for them. They ruined a show I wanted to see all my life. Kiss live. I left a Rush fan, and could not bare to listen to Kiss's basic crap any more. No amount of makeup and flashy lights made up for actual talent anymore for me. I couldn't go back.

When I first started listening to music, it was black sabbath, led zeppelin, and Rush. All my friends were crazy about Kiss,I couldn't stand them then, and to this day,I can't listen to them. They are the band I change the radio station when played
