man, you're a young man and you're listening to the music I grew up with, but that was a long time ago. You're different from your peers, I like that! You choose legendary bands and legendary songs. You are only looking for quality. Once you're an older man, that kind of music will still be here. That's why I admire you. Good luck bro!
The moment you said "is that a heartbeat?", I said out loud "I think it's yours"! Then you immediately said "is it mine?" You've just been on quite the journey!... It's yours.
A friend in high school loaned me 2112 to listen to, back in 1977. I fell into that rabbit hole then and have never returned! Now I'm 62 and still listening to Rush every day!
React to Cygnus X-1 Book 2: Hemispheres next (about 18 minutes) to complete the journey as this is part 1! Also this is Geddy's highest note ever at the end that he's ever reached!
Great quote: “They didn’t have to stop by our planet and drop off their gems for us.” Please, give ‘The Necromancer’ a listen if you haven’t yet. Soooooo many gems.
Great reaction! Props, Pope! "Cygnus X-1" is so technically difficult and impressive, and is a fitting end to "A Farewell to Kings." The first song of their next album, "Hemispheres," is Cygnus X-1, Book II. It takes the whole of side 1 of the album, and tells the story of the balancing of human impulses of reason and emotion. Also on Hemispheres is "La Villa Strangiato" (which you've reviewed), the Trees, and Circumstances. They are all reaction-worthy. Interestingly, the composition and recording of Cygnus X-1, Book II in the studio was so exhausting for the band that they were creatively, emotionally and physically drained. I would welcome your reaction to Cygnus X-1, Book II.
If I was trapped on an island and was only able to listen to one album, it would be A Farewell To Kings, even though my favorite songs are on Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures. Never gets old.
You just listened to “Cygnus X-1 Book 1- The Voyage”! This is the last track off of Farewell To Kings. The end of the song is chaotic because it’s the ship getting sucked up into the black hole Cygnus X1! The next one is “Cygnus x1 Book 2 - Hemispheres” that is side one of the album Hemispheres. That is where the story continues!! Looking forward to hearing it!! Great job!! Be well and God Bless… from Texas!!
Oh yeah! The voyage begins. Just a few notes - Cygnus X-1 was the first black hole humans discovered. It was noticed as a bright x-ray source in the sky. Also, the Rocinante, the name of our voyager’s space ship, was the name of Don Quixote’s horse - a fool’s errand, perhaps? Now you have to do Cygnus X-1 Book II Hemispheres to see what happens next. It is the only one of Rush’s long-form epics that can rival 2112, IMHO. I’d do a lyric video for that - the story is brilliant: ua-cam.com/video/T0W-uYf6GVE/v-deo.html
I really appreciate that you are going deeper than most for your Rush reactions. Cygnus X-1 is one of my absolute favorites. There was a point where I had a ritual with a buddy of mine. During the few weeks after hurricane Hugo hit Charleston, we would go shag debris for various roof crews. Before we’d go meet up with the crew, we’d burn a hog leg and crank up Cygnus X-1 on my Cerwin Vegas!! Good times!!
I wonder if the surviving members of Rush realize how many people they have reached due to the Internet that they probably never dreamed would be listening to them. I think it's great to see so many different types of people from different walks of life giving different types of music a chance and ending up loving it.
Wow,just commented on this reaction video and already got a like. So cool to feel that connection. Just knowing I'm not the only person that has ended up here out of all the different music videos and countless other types. No doubt in the millions of things to choose from. Like puppets dancing on the strings,we've danced to the same place in space and time. What an indescribable feeling it is. I could try to describe it,but it would be in vain. Simply amazing.
its more than music that makes you feel, it also makes you think. when listening to rush the music by itself is amazing but the concept behind the song and lyrics is equally or surpasses that. Rush is heady music
Thanks Pope. Journey back to their "Caress of Steel" album for a couple of their longer masterpieces. (The Necromancer at 12:28 and The Fountain of Lamneth at 19:57). I think you will enjoy them both for the music and story.
Every reaction you have done on this incredible band has been every fans reaction since the beginning of Rush's debut album. I was 11 when my older brother's introduced me to them in 1977..I am glad you get them, just like i did..
That was Book I of the saga, the journey to the black hole Cygnus X-1. Book II expands the tale, describing why the hero undertook the journey, and his fate upon arrival, and is even better musically IMHO. Can’t wait for your reaction!
Interesting how Rush wrote a song about a black hole in 1978 that was not even proven to exist until 1980. Ahead of their time? You bet. Cygnus X-1 book 1 is from A Farewell to Kings Cygnus X-1 book 2 is from the Hemispheres album
Thanks, I haven't heard this in years. Lol This is Cygnus x-1 book one, from "A Farewell to Kings" Book 2, is from Hemispheres, and is the entire first side of the album. Rock On!
In case no one else mentioned it, you should react to Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres. LOL...it amazes me no one bothers to read the comments to make sure they aren't repeating what everyone else already said. It brings a tear to my eye when I see someone listening to Rush for the first time...and they "get it". It's a pleasure watching you enjoy this greatness I have known for so long now. Great reaction, thank you!!
Oh man you did it … the BIG one !! Cygnus X-1 . I am transported when I hear this , I’m really there on the Rosinanti !! Thanks for this and it looks like you truly get it too 👍🏴
The ship referred to in the lyrics is named after Don Quixote's horse, Rocinante; which means 'work horse'. The hero ship in the series, "The Expanse" is named for the very same horse. ...Coincidence? I think not!
Even now, the segment I dub "The Voyage of the ROCINANTE" still gives me chills P.S. Rocinante was Don Quixote's horse... an old, broken-down nag that, to the eyes of the Knight of the Mournful Countenance, was the perfect knight's charger.
Geddy Lee playing the synth, bass and providing vocals all at the same time. He would actually play bass on foot pedals while he played keys to make it all work!
Check out the sequel, Cygnus X-1 Book 2. It is a long song that keeps you interested, and when it is done you'll wonder how 18 minutes went by because it will feel like it only took 5 minutes.
Having found your channel late and enjoyed your other Rush reactions so much, an AUTOMATIC like and big thank you as the song starts. Can't wait to see how this hits you!
Late to the party, but, Cygnus X-1 is a galactic X-ray source in the constellation Cygnus and was the first such source widely accepted to be a black hole in space.
A total kick ass banger classic example of real music. Then again all rush tunes are. My suggestion is focus, enjoy, dive deep hold on and always, always have the lyrics at hand for they are the soul of the song. Except La villa Strangiato, it is all of our souls.
Dude, love your reactions & appreciation for my favourite band. Next, you have to listen to Cygnus X-1 Book II (the first side of the Hemispheres album), which continues the story after the protagonist passes through the black hole. The very idea of continuing a story from one album to the next blew my 17 year old mind back in 1981, lol.
Man, you've been reacting to some cool stuff. I was forced to subscribe to your channel. This is actually the last track on," A Farewell to Kings ", and begins the Hemispheres story. For me " Hemispheres ", is the apex of Rush's creative period. When you want to here some modern prog that will blow your mind, give me a shout.
Because Rush is truly amazing everyone will continue to recommend some of their more elaborate and lengthy songs, which is cool, but might I suggest you react to another of their earlier tracks that is a bit shorter and still rocks beyond compare? Check out "Circumstances" from their 6th album Hemispheres (1978). The official Rush video of them playing it live is pretty cool: ua-cam.com/video/i9dHL7GA1nk/v-deo.html
I so appreciated and respected the sincerity with which you approached this reaction video. You were almost in a meditation. The complexity of so much of their music can be hypnotic. I read through the other comments, so I won't say "now you MUST react to "Cygnus x1 Book 2 - Hemispheres", the sequel to this song". I would like to offer up a few things as they pertain to reacting to Rush songs. * When possible, read the lyrics with the song. Neil Peart wrote the vast majority of the lyrics. He wrote some of the most literate lyrics in music. The lyrics add such a unique demention to their songs. Yes, their musicianship is off the charts. However, the lyrics rival their musicianship (lyric-ship?). * I don't know to which Rush songs you have reacted. My suggestion for you is 2112. It is a story song broken into multiple parts, not many little songs. It's over 20 minutes long but so well worth the ride. Now, if you choose the venture down the boulevard of this masterpiece, react to the animated version of this song. It tells the story of the song. Here is the link: * I didn't see the beginning of your video, so I am only sharing this with you moving forward, to save you some complaining. The drummer/lyricist's last name (Neil Peart) is pronounced "Peert". The 'ear sounds like the human 'ear, not like "the word 'pearl'. This was a pet peeve of his, and out of my great respect for this lost master, I just wanted to give a heads up. So sorry for my book, not post. I have great respect for you. You seem like an intelligent young man and I wish you all the success you cn handle (and maybe a little extra for good measure!
Be sure to tune in next time for Book II of this exciting adventure to discover what happens to our brave, intrepid space traveler, what will he find beyond the known realms of time and space within the black hole of Cygnus X-1?
You really have to listen en react at : Transatlantic!! try the song: Duell with the devil from their album Bridge across Forever. It's the same kind of musical art bands such as Yes and Genesis did back in the days, but in a modern era !! You will love it!
Pick up part 2, first song on Hemispheres. You are picking some great Rush to listen to. Next, figure out the "fear trilogy" Rush gets deep. Check out the documentary Beyond the lighted stage, you will get a lot out of it.
you know just realized this rush is actually funky we get lost in the musicianship but they can be funky also you have to step back a little to hear it
I was never crazy about this song until I learned the story. It’s about a man flying his spaceship into a black hole...spoiler alert...he doesn’t survive. Why was he flying into a black hole, you may ask? Listen to Cygnus X-1 Book II for the full story. Book I (this song) actually fits into the Book II story. Can’t wait for your Book II reaction, but you must have the lyrics for it! 😎
Producer: What time signature is this song in?
Rush: All of them. :D
Ha! I'm gonna steal that one from you.
Terry Brown: So, how many time signature changes for this one guys?
Rush: Yes
"Ever heard of imaginary numbers? If not, just think of it as a FFT with 3 frequencies."
I saw Rush in 1979 in Lexington, KY when I was 15. Great concert!

You are only looking for quality. Once you're an older man, that kind of music will still be here. That's why I admire you. Good luck bro!
I couldn't agree more!
The moment you said "is that a heartbeat?", I said out loud "I think it's yours"! Then you immediately said "is it mine?" You've just been on quite the journey!... It's yours.
That was from A farewell to kings. It’s the last song. It continues on hemispheres, and book 2 is even better
A friend in high school loaned me 2112 to listen to, back in 1977. I fell into that rabbit hole then and have never returned! Now I'm 62 and still listening to Rush every day!
Exactly what happened to me. Same year, same age.
Funny how you were sitting slumped over in the chair at the end like the cover art
React to Cygnus X-1 Book 2: Hemispheres next (about 18 minutes) to complete the journey as this is part 1! Also this is Geddy's highest note ever at the end that he's ever reached!
Agreed, do Book 2 next!
Cygnus Book 2 is on Hemispheres. 😀 Check out Book 2 next to continue the journey. Cheers

I love seeing younger generations appreciating Rush. Many took them granted

TV show The Expanse did hommage to Rush naming the main character's ship Rocinante.
What he said!! 😝
I also read that Steven Hawkings bet the astrologers that Cygnus X1 was in fact NOT a black hole. He lost 20 bucks
I really appreciate that you are going deeper than most for your Rush reactions. Cygnus X-1 is one of my absolute favorites. There was a point where I had a ritual with a buddy of mine. One of my favorite RUSH tunes. Book 2 from Hemispheres should also be done. R.I.P. Neil⚘
Heaviest song I know. Black matter, black hole typa shit.
I saw them perform this back in 1977 when the album came out. It was freakin' insane!

Totally agree! Many people overlook Caress of Steel. I think I listen to that album more than all the others.
This is off 'A Farewell to Kings'. The sequel is on 'Hemispheres'. I saw them play this live on this tour, back in 1978. Amazing performance!
I first heard this as a 13 year old kid and it blew me away, Part 2 is incredible.
YES is premiering on UA-cam at 4am their new song "Dare To Know" from their new album The Quest which will be release October 1, 2021.

Yes, a heart beat. A shame they turned down offers to do movie scores, who better.
Hope you follow it up with "Cygnus X-1 Book 2". Possibly their greatest achievement.

9:16 - I wore that section of the album out!
Noice!
Actually it's not off Hemispheres. It is in fact off A Farewell to Kings. Hemispheres is Cygnus X-1 Book II.
You just listened to Book I, from A Farewell to Kings. Now move on to Cygnus X1 Book II on Hemispheres.
This was of f farewell to kings. Part 2 is off hemispheres
