Can we give Rick Wakeman a little love here? The keyboards on this are constant. Either in the background or up in your face. This lineup with Wakeman is classic Yes at its finest.
Rick Wakeman and Keith Emerson are the two giants of keyboards during this era.

This album became Geddy Lee of Rush his whole world. Highly influenced by Chris Squire bass playing, Geddy said if there were no Yes, there would be no Rush.

Close to the Edge is a spiritual and emotional journey. I think of it as a musical representation of the travel down the River of life.

As most of us Yes fans well know, Yes music requires the listener to immerse themselves, within the privacy of one's own head, and with repeated listenings; therefore to allow the music to carry you on a journey within one's own soul. Well described! Also 'Pink Floyd', 'Dead Can Dance', ... However, imho, since bands or artists usually have a very diverse repertoire, I don't think that principle is so applicable to its totality, but rather to specific songs, musical pieces or concept albums. As an aside, people experience music without a soul. In fact, the existence of a soul has never been scientifically proven. When you listen to classic Yes and get it, it's a life changing experience
This song is one of the most influential pieces to ever be created! If you think about how many time signatures, from song structure, lyrics and simply masterful musicianship, and the fact that you have multiple genres of music all wrapped in one song!? And released in 1972! This song changed not only the rock/progressive genre, but influenced countless musicians for decades to come! We will probably never have anything like this again, so thank you Yes for blessing us with this Masterpiece ❤️
Wow. Impressive guys! I never thought I'd see this prog masterpiece on this channel. It is just so long that most reactors don't do it. Respect gentlemen! Thank you. Many people believe this is the greatest song in prog and I am one of them. The Hammond organ solo at approximately 20:40 is the most finely crafted organ solo in all of rock.
Must rare is those who actually LISTEN to it without stopping all 2 minutes to say "amazing" "I recognize this instrument" or "this sound is nature I guess..." X)

Watching you two guys dig this is exactly what the seventies was like. A bunch of guys in someone's basement, a haze of hash smoke, eyes closed, heads waiving , totally tripped out with absolutely no shortage of music that was made for you to get f****d up too and marvel at. I feel I won the cosmic lottery being born in 59.
~Exact same situation for me, only it was '73 and I was twenty five. My best friend's attic where the sound system was. Yes Genesis King Crimson Tull, good days.

Guys, I recommend listening to such songs from YES as “The Gates of Delirium”, it lasts 21 minutes, the longest song, and “Yours Is No Disgrace”. The song "Close To The Edge" is a mixture of progressive rock and theatrical performance in the style of opera, sometimes listening to this song it reminded me of fantastic Hollywood films such as "The Abyss" or "Robocop", at least the group YES could write such songs for Hollywood I I’m 100% sure, we heard various instruments here, from bass, guitars and organ, the organ really impressed me, overall one of the best compositions YES! 18 minutes to forget about everything!

Rush arrived on the scene after Yes and were huge Yes fans
Around 1970 they came two a small town in Michigan and actually played at the Fenton community center I actually sat in a folding chair three rows back from the stage it gave me an experience I never forgot unbelievable. I'm 72 and still love him as much now as I did then
When I was a teen, they would play whole Yes albums on the local late night fm station. Love them.

One of the most amazing things about Yes is that they were jyst as tight live as they were in studio. If you take away crowd sounds, you can’t tell live from studio. They were (still are) THAT GREAT
I've seen it several times. 2001 with an orchestra outside at a winery in WA. A couple of years ago for the 50th anniversay with the newer lineup. Either way it was awesome.

The dream of Geddy with Yes DID come true in 2017 at Yes' induction to the rock and roll hall of fame. In the performance of Roundabout, Geddy delivered the part of the late, great Chris Squire. Watch that vid. Geddy looks as if a childhood fantasy is coming true. He does the air keyboard break just like we all do listening to this. He is in awe of what is going on around him even while he is expertly playing Chris' part.
"Was that eighteen minutes?!?" is testament to how well-constructed the whole thing is. You break it down and it's four or five themes/motifs which are very cleverly arranged and woven together, so - in a way - it's like listening to the same song done four times in slightly different ways but which you recognise every time certain bits come around again. As a Yes fan of many years, I'd say they never reached this height before or after, though "Awaken" comes close.

What you have listened to is without question a true masterpiece.
And what you need to understand is that people will still be listening to this a hundred years from now.

This one,Gates of Delirium and The Ritual. Seen them all played live by various lineups of the band and have been floored every time.
Geddy did play Roundabout with Yes after Chris passed, and Danny Carey played YYZ with Rush, so yeah these guys are all interconnected!
Watching these two with their eyes closed listening to the opening is beautiful.

One of my very best concert memories was seeing this performed live. Just them performing, no tape fills, drum tracks, all 100% the boys. Lifetime favorite band since '73. Best band to listen to while tripping, btw. This whole album is mindblowing - all 3 tracks of it.

when YES was inducted into the RRHOF, they played ROUNDABOUT and Geddy Lee stepped in for the late Chris Squire on bass. There is video of it. Watching you guys react to this was priceless. YES is head music, your brain may not understand the lyrics, but your mind does. ROCK ON

Watch y'all vibe to this was wonderful. I will admit one time I actually cried at the end of this song because it moved me so much. I started thinking of the meaning and thinking about stuff and it got me good.
For another group that will take you away try Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Tarkus is a monumental song, 20 minutes of astonishing music, Karn Evel Nine is another fantastic song. Trilolgy is another amazing adventure. Keith Emerson is known as the greatest keyboardist of the 70's.
I saw Emerson, Lake, and Palmer in concert in the 70s, the piano rose up into the air and spun in circles upside down while he was playing it.

There are only two other progressive rock epics from the 70s that also occupy the status of 'beyond rock' and have changed lives like this one has : 'Supper's Ready' by Genesis, and 'Echoes' by Pink Floyd. You will never be the same..
Both Rush and Tool have noted that YES was a major influence. And Rush inducted YES into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and played bass when they played Roundabout at the ceremony. Chris Squire, Yes' bassist had died just a few years before. -- I'm really glad you liked this one. Do the rest of the album and then do the album Relayer - it will blow your socks off.

Backtrack a few years to 1969 and the album "In the Court of the Crimson King" by the group King Crimson.
Back in the day we used have a couple fatties being passed around listening to this great music.
Great reaction to my all time favorite song, album and band! I could tell you were really feeling it! Some criticize the chaotic beginning but to me it reflects the chaos of our early lives...
For more pure prog journeys i suggest the Pink Floyd Trinity: Dark Side of the Moon. Wish You Were Here and Animals. Listen to a side at a time. PF lyrics are much more poignant and dark than Yes, but very relevant even today. Timeless!

The track is a spiritual journey.
The opening section sounds a mess at first with each of the musicians doing his own thing with no cohesion.
This is deliberate. A musical metaphor of chaos to represent a confused state of mind.
The person then finds peace and tranquility down by the river at one with nature and discovers himself.
The line near the end "Now that you find, now that you're whole"
A true masterpiece of musical craftsmanship.
Its good to be older when you can say you have been listening to Yes for over 50 yrs. Many concerts over the decades. With Jon Anderson and without, Yes still gets it done musically.

"I don't think anyone understands the meaning of this song", I'm a Yes nut and I certainly haven't got a scooby! This is an immense song and you're right to put them with Rush and Tool as regards a journey. I know Rush are heavily influenced by Yes, Geddy Lee indicted them into the R&R Hall of Fame. I'd put 2 bands into that trippy "takes you to another place" category, with track suggestions: Pink Floyd - Shine on You Crazy Diamond and Genesis - Supper's Ready. Great reaction lads!

Well, here's my take after 50 years of listening to it: Anderson said the lyrics were inspired by Hermann Hesse's 1922 novel "Siddhartha", which charts a journey of self-discovery and spiritual realisation, so... It opens with the peaceful sounds of nature, followed by the chaos of individual life in human society, the search for spiritual enlightenment, the notion that it cannot be found in human society ("Then according to the man who showed his outstretched arm to space, He turned around and pointed, revealing all the human race, I shook my head and smiled a whisper, knowing all about the place"), and ending with the sounds of nature one again (the Buddhist idea of enlightenment as being one with nature). The end of the journey was thus there at the beginning, all along. But while the author has attained that higher spiritual plane, they are still physically bound to the material reality of their lower, Earthly existence; so as seasons pass by: I get up, I get down.
Gentlemen, thank you. I guess it's appropriate that my favorite reaction of yours happen with this song. You guys responded to this exactly as I have been responding to it for 47 years. Fun fact; The first time I ever listened to this song and album was also the very first time I took LSD all by myself. Yah. No kidding. What a trip!

Regarding Rush and Yes. Yes were the inspiration for Rush. Getty Lee Idolized Chris Squire, so much so that he took Squire's place at the induction of Yes at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. He played bass on their performance of Roundabout because Squire had passed away. (it's on UA-cam)
When I saw them in MSG in 1976 me and my girlfriend were sitting 5th row center the blotter acid was just starting to kick in. What a great concert that was!

Fractured yet again by the explosive creativity and virtuosity of these nutbars. Incandescent. Early on, Steve Howe's clustered rapid-fire runs evoke - for me - Roman candles, which were tube shaped fireworks that spun, spitting colours when nailed to a post, board or such. Drums also wild. Whole band is phenomenal. Enjoy the journey, see y'all aboard.

The other guitarist in my band and I were HUGE Yes fans, and drove three towns away (in my Triumph Spitfire) to get Close to the Edge the day it came out, and went back to my house to listen to it.
We both lost it during that first "Ahhhhhh" in the intro.
Never enjoyed a first listen so much in my life.
I traveled from WA to GA last weekend to see Jon and Band Geek performing Yes epics. I suggest you see them. Amazing show.

You two dudes are fucking awesome I bought close to the edge from gillete record store in 1972 in riverside ca took it home sat on my bean bag chair with some stoner friends with the black light on with flourescent posters drank some budweiser and smoked some cheap ass mexican weed and tripped the fuck out lol
When this came out I listened to it every day for six years. Fifty ye!rs later l still hear something new in there.
Now just wait until you hear all four sides (only four songs) of "Tales From Topographic Oceans"...then the great "Gates of Delerium" and what two members called their best song ever... "Awaken."

I saw Yes in concert for the first time in 1974. I was in an "altered state, " but the music alone sent me floating out of the arena! Their concerts are always great!
OH SNAP!!!! You DID'IT and went for the EDGE! I hope you all were Stoned! So, I first heard this and saw them LIVE in 72 at 16 years old and was essentially musically REBORN! 70's YES were the GODS of PROG but if non-pure Prog like Rush and Tool are your only other reference points then you need to GET OUT MORE, my young friends. PURE PROG is a deep deep well. There are few Progressive Rock originals & peers of 70's YES that can compete but with their own unique imaginative styles these come close > KING CRIMSON, (early) GENESIS, GENTLE GIANT, NATIONAL HEALTH, VANDER GRAAF GENERATOR. Once you go through that door & start down this path you will UNDERSTAND that there's an entire UNI-VERSE of amazingly adventurous non-traditional Rock bands which MOST mainstream music fans have never heard. So now that you've been pushed up the EDGE maybe you have the motivation to go OVER IT into more serious PROG ! LOL BTW the next two songs off this album will also BLOW YOUR MIND
Def a masterpiece! I only heard it for the first time maybe a year ago, been missing it all these years
Listen to the song Firth Of Fifth performed by Genesis, you will like it! There were a lot of great progressive bands in the 70s. Such as Genesis, YES, Pink Floyd, Rush, King Crimson, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Iron Butterfly, Frank Zappa, Gentle Giant, Soft Machine and many many others. The last thing I listened to now was Curved Air, a progressive British rock band that released a couple of good progressive albums in the 70s, but unfortunately did not last long and broke up.
Now we're talkin. Epic. Watch when yes went in the hall of fame. Geddy sat in for Chris squire.
