5:55 hehe, that confusion is EXACTLY what i did when i was on my lessons. now I've learnt it's a bonus because you can leave the bike in gear on a hill, put the side stand down and it will tell you that it is in gear because the engine will stop, making hilly stops quicker. I wouldn't rely on it though, not all bikes have it and i have set off on my 125 with it down before which is incredibly dangerous (also how i bruised my ankle really badly). I feel the same way about the XSR700, it's a great bike if it's what you're looking for but like the rebel it's engineered too well and loses some charm for me too. It's a great starting point to look at the paralell twins though. I would have a look at the kawasaki next :) I learnt on a bright yellow ER-6N called bumblebee (also rode a silver one called Roadrunner because it had a signal reminder that beeped!)
re: kickstand. It is good they have some safety like that, since I knew a guy that took off with the kickstand down and killed himself when turning. (My 1987 BMW had it when you put the clutch in, the kickstand popped up automatically.....it was good and bad. I put the kickstand down a couple times while in gear and holding in the clutch in and ended up dropping the bike since it popped back up.)
@@pcthayer there's always stories like that for any safety equipment, it's sad. that BMW sounds a little over-done though lol, knowing me i'd sneeze and the sidestand would pop up.
@@TwoWheeledPotato Yes, there are pros and cons to everything. That bike had self-cancelling turn signals too (in 1987). Figured all bikes would have that by now (since riding with your blinker on can really get you in an accident with the driver thinks you are turning.)
If you are looking for something with heritage styling but larger displacement you might be interested in the Triumph T120. Bonneville styling is iconic, Triumph also offers a lot of different styles depending on what fits your needs. And since the bikes are basically unchanged there is incredible aftermarket support to modify the bike to make it your own. Keep it up Bug!
@@BugzyMoto Yeah, I took a Triumph Bonneville for a test ride while my Honda Rebel was being serviced, and I fell in love. So I traded in the Rebel and now I own a Triumph Bobber. Full of character and charm, every ride is an adventure. :)
@@justinmantell Well I got the Bobber which is not good for touring, very few good luggage options. The T120 or Speedmaster would be better for that. I got a dart flyscreen to get the wind off my chest, which helps on highways. 1200cc, 6 gears, plenty of torque and hp to comfortably keep a good pace all day. Would recommend going for a test ride if you can, see if the bikes are a good fit for you. Style differs between models, and comfort and fit is subjective. Straight bar and mids on the bobber, or beach bar and forwards on the speedmaster, both good but most people will prefer one over the other.
I've heard on the MT07/XSR700 you need to keep the rpms up to get the power out of it and not just ride it like a cruiser. (I think you would really hurt yourself on the MT09/XSR900....too powerful, although that bike has 3 electronic riding modes.) Glad you got to try the bike out. I love the looks of the XSR700, the black and gold together.
@@BugzyMoto You'll find on cruisers, you will feel the torque in the lower rpm range and the engines don't rev too high, on sports bikes the torque is in the higher rpm range, since they are usually very high reving engines. One bike off your list of possible bikes, 1000 more possibilities to go. 🙂 (Since your XS650 is a copy of an old Triumph, try one of the newer Triumph Bonnevilles at Moms....although new, they are more than that Yamaha is.....although they have a used 2014 Bonneville 900 listed on their site.)
If Yamaha is preferred, I'd look at a Bolt. It's the efficient japanese sportster. That being said, my experience with any XSR is that they're very much underpowered. Even the 900 "go fast" version is pretty weak. But, after watching the video, you weren't really getting up into the powerband. They rev pretty high, and you kind of need to keep em there to get some power out of em. If you want that low down power, and a good bit of thump from the exhaust, look into the Triumph twins. The Speeds still have the classic looks, but the Bonnevilles are almost the standards for "modern classics" but a little slower. Just be aware of the seat after about an hour. They're known to be kind of uncomfortable.
I’m going to look into the Bolt for sure, thanks for mentioning that, you’re the second person to recommend I check it out. Oh so I should get higher into the RPMs before up shifting? Is that what you’re saying? It’s wild how different things like that are on this bike compared to mine. Thanks for watching!
@BugzyXS The Bolt is more of a cruiser. So there should be more low down torque. More power right off the throttle. Sportier bikes tend to use power high in the rpm range. It's more accessible at higher speeds. More horsepower vs. torque. The more variety you ride, and the more comfortable you get on machines, the more you'll get comfortable really searching for that power. For me, that's the fun of it.
Just found your channel, it’s very relaxing to watch! I just got my motorcycle license and visited the MOMS in Chelmsford! Thinking about going with the Kawasaki Vulcan but was also thinking about a Yamaha Bolt. I think you should try out the Bolt!
@@BugzyMoto The Yamaha Bolt sure has the looks.Beautiful. It could be the right bike for you. (Pretty old school.) Seen comparasons between that and the Indian Scout and the Indian usually wins, although is more expensive too. (BTW....the only color it really looks fantastic in is black.)
If you had brought the revs up higher in each gear, you would probably have been shocked at how much quicker the XSR700 accelerates than your 650. Modern suspensions are typically way better, as well, than your '83 XS650 - though that doesn't really apply to cruisers. Someone below mentions looking at Triumphs, and I would agree. Their Bonnevilles and Street Twins, even though they're liquid-cooled, still have classic British looks, like your Yamaha 650. Check out the Ducati Scramblers, too - they look and sound very cool (though valve adjustments may be pricier).
I already was surprised how much quicker this bike is! I was just reading about the higher RPMs and when to shift, thanks for noting that it’s definitely different and not something I thought of much when on the test ride. I think the Bolt may be perfect but it weighs 542 pounds so it has a little heft to it. Put a passenger pad and a sissy bar on it, and it really looks old school. (BTW....I was watching a video on the Bolt and one complaint was since it is only a 5 speed, if you are doing a lot of highway riding at higher speeds, there is a lot of engine vibration.)
