Mikey does an incredible job and I can't understand why the MET Police don't create a team of cyclists that do this kind of work. It would require minimal expense and the word would soon spread around the UK that if you use you phone whilst driving, you will get caught.
A team of, say, five people doing that role would cost hundreds of thousands of pounds a year. I'm not saying it's not a worthwhile job, but there are more high priority crimes that they will be channelling their limited resources into.
1. That would require much more numbers, which they are already limited on. 2. If they could and did do that, you would ironically slate them saying “they should be out catching murderers”.
@jonahwhale9047 I don't know maybe 20% maybe 5% but wouldn't your time be better spent catching those people who are actually driving rather than targeting those in stationary traffic for click bait so you can monetize it
Still drivers are the ones killing 250 times more pedestrians than cyclists. We humans might have the feeling/thought that X is a bigger threat to us than Y but sometimes this feeling can be misleading. This is why it's important to do some research of some hard data to make it clear what are the major threats to our lifes and what are the minor threats.
It's still an offence even when you've stopped in traffic. I suggest you familiarise yourself with the law and I'm sure Mikey will be happy to explain why it is still an offence. Mind you, if you bothered to look at some of his videos, I'm sure you would easily find the explanation.
@tomquinn9765 it's not the point. The point is there is no point to film driver in standstill traffic. The guy thinks he's a hero so he rather go on the bridge and see who's driving with the phone in the hands then it will make sense

@Dibley8899He won't confront cyclists because if they give him a good hiding, he knows they will probably get away with it. Car drivers cannot because of the fact they are easily traceable by thier registration plates. So he can hide behind that safety net. Personally I dislike snitches. He really hates drivers. They could reflect on their own behaviour (and the possible disastrous outcomes of it) or….they could just throw a hyper-aggressive wobbly in UA-cam comments at the idea of the laws of the road being enforced.
The only issue I have with CM is his engagement after the act has been captured. This causes people to become irate and arguably puts them at more risk of having an accident, as their mind is elsewhere. Film the act and move on discretely. The offenders will get their FPNs in the post. Stopping people and obstructing roads is unnecessarily inflammatory.
I was badly injured by a cyclist who didn’t stop after colliding with me. I cant understand why it isn’t law that all bikes be fitted with some type of bell / horn in the UK ?
Since this guy obviously sees himself as a vigilante, how about reporting cyclists without lights in the dark, cyclists running red lights, cyclists on the pavements, cyclists wobbling along the middle of a lane holding people up?
I do not like the way he sneaks up on people, especially on Ladies, filming them in their cars. There must be privacy laws to stop this. its not his job, its down to the Police. The traffic in London is so slow it's no wonder that people are looking at their phones, its a addictive habit and mainly they are stationary whilst on the phone.
@Dibley8899err, no it doesn't. if it was a requirement, how would you be able to satisfy the other requirement "use hand signals to indicate when you are about to turn"?
@Dibley8899 That law is not a legal requirement. The rule states: "You should ... keep both hands on the handlebars except when signalling or changing gear" "should" in the highway code means that it is a recommendation - not compulsory.
How about listening to audiobooks instead? Or is driving at all really that important for most of the drivers in London? I highly doubt that even half of them are carrying heavy cargo or picking up 3 kids from school that would make it impossible to choose public transport or even cycling over driving.
Nick is wrong. The more using the phone becomes a habit , sitting at lights or otherwise it leads to another thing to do whilst in the car. So many times drivers are so engrossed with their phones gaps open up not realizing lights have changed colour and when they start off driving it’s with a lurch and more speed not checking if anything is nearby to their car. @jonahwhale9047""law"". A word the majority seem not to comprehend the accurate definition of. Lawful rebellion is against the "law" according to many police *OFFICErs.* 1829 and the overwhelmingly opposed institution of the Metropolitan Police in London should give you an indication as to why this is. 😠
@jonahwhale9047 Repealed? Or simply made effectively impractical?? For example, with the fairly recent (though now thankfully overturned) legislation that stated that face masks were to be worn in church, that essentially clashed with the first clause of the 1215 Magna Carta (about the Church Of England remaining free). Whilst it had become the case that the Church Of England wasn't practicably free (because of this rationalisation about health, and that rationalisation about fines etc.), this in and of itself didn't change the objective arguments with respect to the clauses...just the physical and physiological amount of work people would be required to undertake to "undo" the hardship that the legislation/mandate was causing. My belief as to why Parliament began to exist around 80 years after Magna Carta's "agreement" (which - I'd actually like to make known, could *_technically_* have been considered an agreement reached under duress...the duress potentially, of EACH party concerned in their own ways), was to institute measures that "clawed back" our rights by hook or by crook (sorry, that's not an expression I like to use). As it so happens, I don't base my lawful principles on the 1215 Magna Carta...I base it on GOD being the perfectly fair judge of all of us. If I wrong somebody, I *ENJOY* righting it, without being asked to do so. I don't engage with courts or the "legal" system - nor even common law, for that matter, as even this can be fundamentally flawed. This too means that if I'm wronged, I don't interact with police or the legal system (or, again, common law) for the same reason. Though I endeavour to create the environment whereby somebody who has wronged me, can invite themselves to right it - under THEIR conditions. The 1215 Magna Carta happens to be a very well thought out document, which is useful for guidance.
@jonahwhale9047 As I understand it, half of the country were "freemen" during the period of King John. I do indeed have a suspicion that you're correct in that *_my_* ancestors could well have been in the "not free" category! 🙂 I should also make clear; My principles are based on Romans 13:1 KJV Bible *ONLY* - NOT other versions of the Bible that state that the governing "authorities" are "in charge", but rather, "higher powers". An assassinated ruler can't any longer wield said power, whereas GOD can't be assassinated. Any human being wielding said "authority" can only do so for as long as they're alive, and even *_they_* have to swear an oath to GOD (e.g. coronation oath and oaths taken in court (why would these be necessary if you were intending on telling the truth but still not believed thereafter anyway??)). Even "rulers" are under orders from GOD, and are no more (or no less) sovereign than any other of us (unless one chooses not to be). Birth certification bonding within weeks of coming into the world, is a devious tactic to attempt to elicit control in my opinion.

Don’t blame Mikey for the law, which was tightened recently on the back of scientific research about the dangers of phone use by drivers. There are many good reasons why phone use by drivers when stationary is dangerous; one is that drivers that use a phone when stationary are likely to use one when moving, another is that they are likely to move off without proper observation.

There are a lot of comments by posters regarding reporting to the Met and it really boils down to resources, I am an driver and an avid cyclist and I do report very dangerous encounters, including distracted driving. It depends on who reviews the footage, mostly its untrained staff who either don't understand the technology which takes the footage or worse of all not understanding the road traffic laws. It also depends on where you have the incident, for example the City of London Police do not have the uploading aspect of reporting, you have to make a statement and then supply the footage via physical means. Mikey does an incredible job and I can't understand why the MET Police don't create a team of cyclists that do this kind of work. It would require minimal expense and the word would soon spread around the UK that if you use you phone whilst driving, you will get caught.
Not enough money to pay them unfortunately. So they rely on cyclists wearing cameras to do it for them for free.
@Dibley8899 "But he breaks the law himself sometimes" does he?
A team of, say, five people doing that role would cost hundreds of thousands of pounds a year. I'm not saying it's not a worthwhile job, but there are more high priority crimes that they will be channelling their limited resources into.
@Dibley8899 No, it’s not.

@Dibley8899 How will he make the roads safer? By concentrating on motorists and ignoring his biker pals for committing the same offences.
@Dibley8899He won't confront cyclists because if they give him a good hiding, he knows they will probably get away with it.
Car drivers cannot because of the fact they are easily traceable by thier registration plates. So he can hide behind that safety net.

@jonahwhale9047""law"".
A word the majority seem not to comprehend the accurate definition of.
Lawful rebellion is against the "law" according to many police *OFFICErs.*
1829 and the overwhelmingly opposed institution of the Metropolitan Police in London should give you an indication as to why this is. 😠
@jonahwhale9047 who gets to decide that?
Logical determination??
I should also make clear;
My principles are based on Romans 13:1 KJV Bible *ONLY* - NOT other versions of the Bible that state that the governing "authorities" are "in charge", but rather, "higher powers".

He's doing a good job, catching all those drivers breaking the rules. The rules are there for all road users. In one of Mikey's videos he films himself stopping on a pedestrian only crossing, this is actually an offence that carries a fixed penalty notice of £30. He didn't pay anything. Too many people break the rules and Mikey is one of those.
And?
Not really. The vast majority of fatalities and serious injuries on our roads are caused by bad drivers of motor vehicles. If you feel so strongly about cyclists breaking the law you are completely free to start a campaign of your own.
you are free to do that yourself-nobody is stopping you

4:08 Cyclist rides over a pedestrian refuge to tell a driver off for doing the wrong thing. Another hypocrite!
Do you see anyone on the refuge? And before you say "That's why the driver went on the opposite side, because it was clear" Just not the same though is it. Even if someone was walking, what on earth is a 12kg bicycle moving at 5mph going to do? There's people who weigh more than the rider and bike combined walking around.
@@AifuqicjaBreaking the law to tell someone off for breaking the law, do you not see how hypocritical that is? It doesn't matter how heavy the bike and rider are, they broke the law too. Why are you defending law breaking?
Excellent work Mikey!!!
Using a phone while stopped at traffic lights isn’t exactly the worst thing ever, as long as it’s put down before moving off.
It’s against the law and carries a 6-point penalty. Two strikes and your out. Don’t blame Mikey for the law, which was tightened recently on the back of scientific research about the dangers of phone use by drivers. There are many good reasons why phone use by drivers when stationary is dangerous; one is that drivers that use a phone when stationary are likely to use one when moving, another is that they are likely to move off without proper observation.
everyone who uses a phone while driving is going to be using them when stationary. until the police start rolling out at scale the new camera systems which can detect people driving and using a phone-as they have been trying in cornwall- cyclists filming and reporting drivers in traffic jams is the closest we can get. me: i'd love some enforcement on the M4

Just wondering who is out there catching the cyclists behaving badly?
A cyclist behaving badly is the equivalent of a paralysed chihuahua growling at you. Annoying but won't kill you. A person behind the wheel of a 2300kg SUV behaving badly has much more severe consequences and you know it. Focus on the actual issue that is taking lives and stop projecting your frustration on a mere annoyance at most.
As a motorcyclist I commend Mikey for helping keep the roads safer. My own channel has a load of phone drivers. Every one of those was reported to essex police. Who did nothing.
Thank you Times for promoting Mikey and his amazing job. This means a lot to me somehow.

He is allowed to stop on a pedestrian crossing in order to stop injury or damage. Would the court accept that filming / stopping a driver using a mobile phone fits that criteria?

The person on the road, busy looking in cars, is reporting others for being distracted on the road.
That same person presented data (police prosecutions) that demonstrates the effectiveness of his process.
He wears a GoPro and has other cameras on him that do not diatract him.
Camera simply points to what he is looking at.
Looking at what others are doing in their cars does not cause a distarction to him.
Even if he was distracted, his potential to cause harm is considerably less than that of a distracted driver.
@@ramesh_manga Yes, I'm glad you agree, he is distracted, while reporting others for being distracted on the road. What a hypocrite and danger this self appointed cop is. It's funny you think cyclists have never caused accidents.
@Sam-nh7ns He's in the road and while he's distracted on his self appointed policing, he can definitely cause an accident. One of the restrictions on bikes is taking due care and attention while on the road. Which he isn't.
What about cyclist behaving badly ?
Cyclists do indeed behave badly and they should be pulled up for it.
The statistics suggest greater numbers of badly behaved distracted car drivers. So easier to spot.
Potential for harm is greater from a distracted driver. Focusing on drivers does the most good.
“What about this other thing?”
Whataboutism
I agree with ramesh_manga. The police are responsible for road safety and as cyclists kill 3-5 people a year and drivers 1500, it's easy to understand why the police focus on prosecuting drivers rather than cyclists.
Were you to wave a magic wand and instantly make all cyclists behave perfectly, road KSI stats wouldn't change noticeably. Do the same for drivers instead, and you'll stop almost all traffic deaths and injuries. Do you see why I don't bother with cyclists now?
@citizensmitt u mean what about breaking the law on a bike???
There are a lot of comments by posters regarding reporting to the Met and it really boils down to resources, I am an driver and an avid cyclist and I do report very dangerous encounters, including distracted driving. It depends on who reviews the footage, mostly its untrained staff who either don't understand the technology which takes the footage or worse of all not understanding the road traffic laws. It also depends on where you have the incident, for example the City of London Police do not have the uploading aspect of reporting, you have to make a statement and then supply the footage via physical means. If the higher echelons of policing really wanted to do something along with the law makers, the phone issue being used at the wheel would be zero or next to zero. Firstly anyone found handling with a handset while driving - Instant Ban - no points, ban right away 1 year.. Second time 5 years, 3rd 10 years then driving test. And to add that people like CyclingMikey get a bounty just like in New York - The only way ~Trooper

Some of the comments here are absurd in the extreme. There are just as many bad cyclists out there as bad drivers pro rata.

GoPro cameras over heat and batteries only last minutes, I suggest he stop acting the vigilantly and leave the detective work for the police. One day someone will film him doing the wrong thing because we all do.
