I've shaken my head many times seeing uploads from @CyclingMikey, so I decided to visit "Gandalf Corner" myself to see what the fuss is all about.

I lost my twin brother to a driver on his phone. Pete was riding his bike and a driver hit him. He pass away in the ambulance. The police proved he was on his phone at the time....He went down for 5 years, should of been life, I am 100% on Mikey's side. We need more people like him. Think how many life's he has saved................

A cyclist using a selfie stick while riding can cause themselves alot of injury and if they collide with a car would the motorist be seen at fault for not giving enough space to a cyclist that had Intentionally encroached on a other roads users space

So you agree he only takes issue with motorists as he doesn't want to endanger cyclists by communicating the error they are doing just as bad as a driver being on the phone or the wrong side of the road.
If a cyclist and a motorist collide it's seen as the drivers fault and if the cyclist or a pedestrian is injured or killed the driver at fault or not will carry the incident with them.
I've had a cyclist fall off a bike trying to undertake me and nearly killed the person if I hadn't slammed on brake and put my car on other side of the road to save life and instead have to pay for a at fault crash as I collided with a car and the cyclist wanted to fight me for his error

Only last year I had a MAMIL
(MIDDLE AGED MAN IN LYCRA) Ignore roundabout priority as obviously he's more important and nearly went under my wheels or over my bonnet and he gave me the wanker gesture. When I followed and looked for a police officer as we were in a royal park I was told to be more considerate and give way to a cyclist even tho I had right of way and he pulled infont of me on my Left on a roundabout.
Mikey has addressed the bike/motorcycle issue.
He won't step out in front of them for fear of creating an accident and causing injury.
He does report motorcycles when he can get their plates.

In my opinion there's no denying that by confronting bad driving he's created a lot of awareness and many law breaking drivers may think twice about using their phone just in case Mikey or a camera helmet cyclist is around.
I've been close passed at speed, cut up, given abuse, and assaulted by drivers, I hope me sharing my experiences can really build bridges among all road users.
I agree we should be building bridges with others of differing opinions, however I am of the opinion that what Mikey is doing is burning those bridges between motorists and cyclists not building. His videos highlight that everyone can make mistakes and bad choices but only a specific group by their group id will get punished for making those mistakes/choices. This seem to be the ongoing theme in many areas of life at the moment and all seem to be burning bridges between groups not building 🤔
I disagree. People do things because they think they can get away with it not because they shouldn't. I think lurking around bushes grassing people in (they absolutely do deserve it btw) but grassing everyone in in that manner will start to make him look like one of them wierd "auditors" that lurk around police stations filming.
People will see him, get annoyed, not accept culpability because people don't like to be wrong so our brains more often than not don't allow it because it wants the dopamine off being right and then they'll just blame the tribe affiliated to the incident because humans are by nature, tribal. So all you'll get is more road users hating cyclists in a very similar way to why people hate vegans because people don't like to be preached to.
Ultimately if I was morally obliged to go out of my way to catch people breaking road laws as this video says he does, then I'd join the police. Like there's things that boil my piss like people not indicating and it it allllways some nugget in a moody cheap car driving 25 down a 40 which winds me up even more because you're either overly cautious or not at all. Bloody pick one. But the point is I don't go around lurking on street corners to jump out at people with my camera over it

People will just use their phone where they can’t be caught. Like the open road which is far far more dangerous then standing traffic.
Education is the key. Mikey doesn’t care about education he has more of a “gotcha” approach. Which ends up rubbing up the drivers who are caught red handed and the whole thing becomes pointless.
Mikey is a highly principled dude. I have a pedestrian refuge at the end of my road that gets abused in exactly the same way. I was nearly hit as a pedestrian on this and the same junction was the scene of a fatal accident involving a local woman which devastated our community. I have 'camped' out on a few occasions and over the last year recorded/reported nearly 300 drivers committing this very same selfish and dangerous manoeuvre. I don't step out or make myself known as I do it, partly because if they do stop and correct, no matter how belligerent they are, it can't be argued there was an offence... so instead I just let them provide the rope.
And does it work?
Well for me, I would see a trend of the same offenders doing this 2 or 3 times... but always a short time apart. So once they'd received an NIP (or 2 or 3 NIPs) then they would stop appearing in my data.
Don't get me wrong, I have questioned where my own compulsion to record folk cheating the system like this comes from - and I have spoken to my trauma therapist about this (been doing desensitisation work since my accident in April last year), and actually he encourages this, he thinks my exposure and engagement with road use is a positive step, and that for all the negativity I'm holding on to and physical harm that was done to me when I used to ride, this is helping me to restore balance.
The primary difference is in the way you are going about things.
You're just quietly doing your thing, no blocking traffic, confronting members of the public or breaking any laws. You're recording the offences being committed, and forwarding it on to the relevant authorities to deal with. And it would appear from your data that you're being successful.
I have a lot more respect for your methods than I do for the person mentioned in the original clip.
The only questions I would ask are if it's only drivers you report, or do you try to report cyclists too (if they are guilty of the same transgressions in your area)? And also, have the police or local authorities ever looked at safety initiatives or layout changes? If you're sending in a fair number of reports, someone somewhere must have realised there's something wrong.
@@mcdon2401 I appreciate this comment - one of these days I am going to post a video about all of this on my channel with some highlights of motorists that have been processed for the offences identified.
In answer to your question about cyclists - in my example, there is a dedicated cycle lane, so they're often filtering in their own dedicated space and don't feel the need to contravene the sanctity of the keep left traffic island/pedestrian refuge sign.
Also, cycling is not as common in the outer suburbs of Leeds and Bradford as in say central London - partly because it's very hilly and also because we don't last long until we're nearly killed (In my 6 years of riding daily I had 4 nasty accidents, none were my fault or could've been avoided. 3 were hard and painful, the last one was a near death experience which permanently ended my cycling career). What I will say is having a hyper-vigilance/awareness of wrong doing or selfish road use is not something I approached with a bias towards one vehicle type or another. I have verbally chastised red light jumpers or salmon cyclists and I have shared clips of their bad behaviour as examples of what not to do. That being said, if you watch Mikey's longer form videos he does the same to cyclists, he tells them off, he reasons that if he were to try and stop them and they fell off that they could get hurt and he'd be liable.
And lastly, one of the current benefits of riding a bike is you do have an element of anonymity and impunity on the road. I understand this annoys some motorists as they think cyclists are getting something for nothing, but at the end of the day, if we rode our push bike at 60mph into the side of a school, orphanage, maternity unit, care home, we'd just be a stain on the wall, where as if a motor vehicle did this, there'd be untold damage and countless casualties... people shouldn't be annoyed that they are using the road on the understanding that they should be responsible and held responsible for wrong doing.
@@MiseEnZheng you've absolutely got my sympathies about the accidents you've had. Had a few myself over the years, and I know it's not fun, although thankfully I've been relatively lucky with my injuries only causing slight issues years down the line. So I can absolutely understand wanting to improve road safety generally, and in that area in particular.
With any luck, your efforts will bear fruit in getting the powers that be to take action to make the place safer. And absolutely get some of the clips up, if only to show that there's an alternative to shouting and confrontation that can still get results.
@@mcdon2401 indeed, I'm planning to do a montage of some of the offences with a voice over just giving a little more context as to why I'm filming and why it's a problem which I have a compulsion to engage with - I was awake early one morning in the summer of 2020 when I heard from my bedroom a speeding vehicle and the sound of an abrupt terrible crash - then the sound of a vehicle speeding away... Isma Nawaz was a local member of our community and lost her life in an instance of combative driving on the junction in question. I spoke to the police who at the time didn't know the cause but just assumed Isma had lost control - I told them I'd audibly witnessed a vehicle speed away after the sound of the crash and that I didn't think it was purely accidental. It did indeed turn out a 2nd car had been directly involved and that driver is now serving a lengthy prison sentence.
To me, the problem is there are too many drivers who take risks selfishly, they think because every time they've committed an offence it's been inconsequential, that they build an experiential-bias that it will always be that way. But it's not until something like what happened to me last year, when a driver ignores several give ways speeding through a junction and not bothering to make any observations, colliding with and maiming a cyclist, that their "chancing it" risky, lazy and selfish driving finally results in consequence.
A while back I also did a video that touched on why cyclists "over-react" and maybe don't help themselves by having dramatic reactions to what motorists might deem to be fairly minor instances. In essence that there's often a lot of built up negative anecdotes and trauma in that cyclist's experience, and someone putting you back into reliving that head space/memory/incident for a moment can be really triggering. (It's called Cycling Incidents 17: on my channel, but youtube doesn't like it because the thumbnail is my bloodied up face and there's some gruesome injury detail).
@@MiseEnZheng unfortunately whilst the vast majority of road users genuinely don't want to hurt anyone, there are a small but significant amount of people whose behaviour is always going to be an issue. The causes may be wide and varied, but the outcome is frequently the same. Deliberately reckless behaviour that usually leads to someone innocent being dragged in. I will keep my own opinions on how they should be dealt with to myself, except to say that no matter the mode of transport, there will be a Darwin award for them at some point. Controlling and mitigating the damage they cause until then is a problem we're unlikely to solve any time soon, but they should surely be apologising to the trees that make the oxygen they have stolen from society.
Outside of that, you've got probably a majority of people who want to do the right thing, but are unsure what that is or how to do it. That's the sort of people that are best placed to be educated, maybe they've never driven a car or ridden a bike, so they don't know what they don't know. We get them educated and the roads will be infinitely better places to be.
Good luck with the videos. I hope they concentrate the minds of those who can be taught, and maybe even the ones in a position to sort some of the issues you'll raise 👍
I'm a car driver who at first thought that Mikey was being pedantic, needlessly confrontational, and a pain in the arse; but after watching a few of his videos I quickly realised that he had a very good point. As a consequence a few lackadaisical bad habits that had crept into my driving over the years got removed, so Mikey has definitely improved my road safety and awareness. And this, I think, is the point of his videos. Mikey gave me the golden opportunity to learn from other people's mistakes before I did something unintentional but stupid that I would have deeply regretted. I can't say whether or not watching Mikey's videos has prevented me from seriously hurting, or even killing someone, but I can say that the improvement in my driving has definitely made it highly unlikely now. As a consequence I respectfully consider you to be wrong on this occasion.
People don't know that his father was killed in a road accident so for for him (CyclingMikey) it's very personal.

Yeah, he's a bit of a stubborn knobhead - but honestly, "simply report it to police if you're so concerned with road safety" is not a good argument to sling at him. Because that is what he did for a long time before his "Gandalf" videos became famous. He reported, the police fined and the drivers kept cutting. Clearly the fines weren't bothering people enough or they weren't enforced often enough. So it is perfectly understandable that somebody at some point would be tempted to find another ... shall we say ... incentive? ... for drivers to stick to the rules of the road. And since the only reason they do it is to skip the que and gain a few precious minutes, it is those minutes you need to cost them. He wins once everybody going through there thinks: "Ah, I rather not skip the que. If Gandalf is there again, I loose more than I would gain."
I was struck by the distracted driver of a 10 tonne truck when sitting in traffic on my motorcycle. The driver did not even have the shame to finish his phone call before leaving the cab to see if I was still alive. As much as Mickey is a bit of a pain in the arse, exposing and helping the police prosecute these knob heads is a good thing. The more that get banned the better.
Exposing their actions on UA-cam is just the icing on the cake.
Perfect example of why this kind of citizen reporting is justified, and why the inevitable cries in response of "But cyclists!" are misjudged.

Banning distracted drivers is about making the streets safe for law abiding road users.
%100 correct, there is no excuse for these people, however many straw man arguments people build and they should lose their license for life.
Love his videos. The ones at Gandalf corner especially. The drivers should be banned in my view. They know the law and blatantly break it.
To be fair to Mikey, he speaks out against breaking the rules on a bike pretty consistently
I think anyone who helps promotes road safety and general driver awareness is a good thing, I myself was caught using a mobile phone albeit by the police, I was offered a course and have not been tempted to use it whilst driving since, its horrific the damage you can do, well done Mikey keep it up..
How is he promoting road safety by leaping out in front of cars? He could achieve the same just by filming and reporting.

He's promoting road safety by those people being corrected at the time of the offence. He isn't leaping out in front of cars, he's stepping out in front of cars, just as ANY PEDESTRIAN WOULD WHEN THEY CROSS AND DONT EXPECT SOMNEONE TO DRIVE ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD.
Fines after the fact, especially many week after the fact do not have the same impact, as when someone is caught during the commission of a road offence
I nearly got knoccked off my bike when a driver pulled out the junction right in front of me while he was on his phone, I reported them, with reg number, to the police within minutes but was told that because THEY didn't see it there was nothing they could do. I did not have a cam, nor should I have needed one. there are a lot of drivers that just don't give a f*ck about anyone else on the roads besides themselves. what Mikey does is put these selfish dangerous people in the public spotlight and the police do the job they're supposed to. DO NOT USE YOUR PHONE WHILE OPERATING A VEHICLE. and the same to everyone else, get off your phones and pay attention to what's a round you. too many people move around glued to their screens. Drivers, Pedestrians et al. GET OFF YOUR PHONES.
I think an innocent until proven guilty model of justice is fitting in most cases. While I do agree wholeheartedly that drivers breaking the law, and using their phone should be punished, I don't agree that that punishment should be decided purely based on one persons hearsay argument.
these days if you don't have a cam the other guy wins. Get a cam, they're not expensive. I've got front and rear in my truck, front and rear on both my motorbikes, side cameras as well on my best motorbike, a cam on my bicycle and even a body cam on my shopping bag. What you do with the video is up to you, but you can't do anything with it if you didn't have the ability to record it in the first place.
Also hopefully you agree with the fact that when reporting this sort of thing you shouldn't be breaking the law yourself?

@@robclayton9612 Huh, yep I'm not the best with definitions. I guess it would classify as first-hand or eyewitness testimony, but my opinion is still true that more evidence than that should be needed to convict.
He's mentioned it in a couple of his videos that the reason he doesn't jump out in front of cyclist in the same way he does for motorcars. Is because he's more than likely to seriously hurt any cyclist. Whereas when he jumps out in front of vehicles he's putting only himself in harms way.
But ultimately he doesn't like the fact that the cyclist do it on any level.
He also can always be seen telling the cyclists off when they do that. I guess maybe he wasn't doing it on the very early videos. But anything last year, he tells them off too. Just doesn't jump in front of them.

In almost all of Mickeys G.C. videos he gets a lot praise and encouragement from the motorists who are obeying the law, so in this situation I think hes uniting road users more than dividing them (or at the very least canceling out the bad feeling).
I imagine Mickey is constantly baffled that the local authorities haven't changed the signage there yet, I know I would be. NO ENTRY in 3 foot high white letters with a red background painted on the road would stop 95% of this.

You shouldn't need a no entry sign. It's not really an entry or exit. The keep left sign there should be enough (although here in Australia the keep left sign actually also says keep left). They're still choosig to break the law, they know theyre doing the wrong thing.
i was rear end by a young female while she was on her cell phone when i was stopped at a red light. 2000$ damage to my car, her car was totaled and i was injured. cycle mikey is a hero to me and there should be more people like him trying to stop dangerous drivers.

I think it's a bit unfair to blame just Mickey for causing the "You're on camera" trend. Sticking strictly to roads, car dash cammers have been doing this for a while longer.
Yeah, society changed in that direction considerably before he started filming these, though he may have influenced a few _cyclists_ to start doing the same.
Including all the clips that Ash's viewers send in to him. Ash himself always deals with the clips he does in a constructive way (and his channel is a good one to watch if you wonder how this can be done). However I often doubt the motives of the cammer who submitted the footage because too often they seem to be wanting the loony road user to get into trouble.
In fairness there are also honourable exceptions: especially when the cammer send in a video of their own mistake and admits they got it wrong
Mickey does it for the wrong reasons. Unlike Ash, he does it to fuel a superiority complex from the results of his actions and making videos. Whereas Ash, tends to take a far more philosophical approach and addressing the faults and solutions. You’ll never win with these kinds of drivers, so why lecture them? Especially in spandex and a daft looking Heath Robinson contraption.
@@ParallelSyntax I disagree with your analysis of Mickey's motives, while I certainly do agree that Ash's approach is likely to be more effective in the long run.
Mickey's history suggests that he is doing this to try to rectify a wrong that earlier in his life has hurt him. That's not a superiority complex: that's taking shit and try to grow roses with it.
It's like people who suffer cot deaths setting up charities for others in that situation; like cancer sufferers raising money for scanners that will arrive too late to save them, and so on

Yes, Id argue it's the big dash cam channels that started this trend.
CyclingMikey increased my awareness of the difficulties faced by cyclists and I actively try to improve their experience when driving now. Anyone who feels resentment at cyclists who report dangerous driving is worried about their own bad driving being prosecuted.
I don't hate cyclists that report driving crime. I just hate all cyclists 👌
The fact he's been able to capture so many incidents shows how common these infractions are. With the police spread so thinly, people get away with it all the time. As much as Mikey is an extremist in his methods, if we all just let everything go, we're headed down a road where it becomes more and more dangerous for everyone, but especially vulnerable road users.
All it needs is the police there for a week or two, or a couple of days every month and ticketing everyone who does it, would soon put a stop to the law breaking.

Because of Mikey's approach, our local police force (traffic division) has now taken to riding through traffic in the town centre doing exactly the same thing on a folding bicycle. They're catching LOADS of people.
They don't do the UA-cam thing, but they DO put the results up on Twitter (again, social media). SM has a much greater reach than the local newspaper.
The one where he pulled up the two doctors is a perfect example of why I applaud what he does. A couple of entitled scumbags who think it's perfectly fine for them not to follow the rules. That attitude runs right through society to the top...which is pretty evident in the news recently. Those two doctors have been absolutely torn to shreds and I for one have zero sympathy for them.
Two doctors who actually help make people's lives better by treating illnesses, rather than a nobody with a bike and too much free time on his hands going round spying on people. Who's the scumbag?
@@IndigoJo so doctors are OK to commit serious traffic offences just because they are doctors. They have suffered dearly for their behaviour and I for one am absolutely thrilled that they have. Loved every delicious second.
Several points arise from this.
If a doctor said that they were on an urgent home visit I guess Mikey would let them go immediately.
If a doctor in such circumstances got reported then the police would probably not take action even though it is still an offence
BUT that raises the question of whether we are all each others police officers? I don't think we are. At the most he should give them a note saying they've been cammed and will be reported. Even better the note could advise contacting legal advice as they will be reported.
Then let them go. To me that would strike a balance between on the one hand just letting them go and on the other holding them up for long enough to inconvenience the law abiding traffic coming from the other direction.
These long arguments with stroppy gits make good watching but are no more helpful than a more moderate approach would be.
I do wonder how much Mikey is motivated by revenge for his best relative who was killed by this sort of driver. The desire to change thinks is admirable, but when it tips over into revenge it can actually prolong a feud (in this case cars v cycles) and that helps nobody.

He's not. that's the issue. he's an appeaser, as I've described in the comment above - and we know from history where appeasement leads to.
I agree with what Mike is doing I'm not a cyclist but have my reasons. I did my first ever speed awareness course after driving for 20+ years with out points. After the course I was only 200-300 yards away from the building and I saw 1 of the people that was on the course on the phone speeding past and over taking me in a 30mph zone when I was already doing 30mph and cutting me up.
All that person got was letter a through the post then click and make an appointment then go to a meeting he/she doesn't want to be at and didn't learn from the misstake.
With Mike at least they are getting named and shamed plus will have a confrontation they will remember for doing what is breaking he law that we all know we should not be doing.
Would you report a person walking down the street waving a gun, or say a knife around, to the police? Or would you wait until they used it to injure or kill someone?
I'm with Mikey on this one. The trouble is if you let drivers get away with doing stuff like this, they consider it the norm, and others will copy. It is a case of give an inch and they take a mile. If you let them get away with this, what comes next? This sort of behaviour should be nipped in the bud, and their punishments made public as a deterrent to others.
If you film the offender and report it, they won’t get away with it.
That last clip where's he's blocking the road, which leads to further road safety violations where cars driving the other way are driving over the pavement to get past just proves he's not interested in road safety or driver improvement through education.
Get the video, send it in, but then, GET OUT OF THE WAY and let people get on with their lives.

One positive aspect to Mickey's videos, he nearly always displayed the resulting actions taken against the offenders. This is important because many have the attitude that if they can get away with it they will continue to do it.
I'm with Mikey on this one. He already said it's not safe too attempt to stop cyclists, What would anyone think if a random person attempted to stop them. Probably think they are having their bike stolen. And If they enforced number plates and insurance many people would stop cycling, as in my opinion a law obeying cyclist is probably a dead cyclist
Yeah. That's true. I like the local Operation Snap videos that show the offence and the legal consequences for the same reason.
Sadly there's thousands in UK with up to 50 points but still allowed to drive, and because of these, folk have the mindset of there's no consequence so no deterrent, and I also bet they're pretty loaded so cost to insurance won't mean anything.
Yes, that's the important point - by displaying the consequences in terms of points, fines, etc, he's demonstrating that drivers' actions have consequences, and if that ends up in less bad driving like that, then it's a good thing. It's no different to what traffic police do on social media, though they anonymise the culprits.

He does tell cyclist off when he sees them doing wrong. I think he is a positive force. Dash cams in cars are used to report bad driving. Several police forces are asking motorists to send in clips and use them to hold poor drivers to account.
So anyone with a dashcam needs to drive in front of the offender, create a road rage incident rather than just capturing the offence and reporting it?

I saw one of his videos a while ago & decided he was causing confrontation just for content for his channel. If he filmed these incidents & passed the video onto the police he might make more of a contribution to road safety.

Mike is part of the bigger picture of challenging misbehaviour on a national level. He does what the Police should if they were better funded. He is polite. He knows the law.
Yes, but in some cases, he breaks the law because he is less savvy than he thinks, although he tries to project he knows what he is doing. His video shows a whole host of road safety breaches, which he could be find for., and I suggest the police also be made accountable since they are aware of his actions in the way he carries out his crusade. I'm not going to go into chapter and verse. You must work that out by researching the law and Highway codes. Simply reporting the events to the police would surface and achieve his goal of bringing people to book instead of creating a breach of the peace or escalating to a Sec 5 PO or more, which he may also be party too. If I were the officer attending the scene, I would make that quite clear to him to cease, and if he continued to jump out in front of cars, I would be tempted to arrest him to prevent a further breach of the peace. Please remember that B of P is a common law offence and arrestable by any member of the public.

If, in the future, he gets decked by some angry driver, the police would be complicit in creating such an event because they did nothing and sanctioned his behaviour. He could quite easily achieve his aims by filming and reporting instead of choosing a route of confrontation. I have also noted in some of his videos that he has also committed some offences in his quest against drivers. That's why I have called him a hypocrite.

I think the Netherlands has the best approach to road safety. There they take into account human behaviour and psychology when it comes to designing their roads. Example: putting a 30 kmh/h sign on a wide road and expecting people to sticking to it is unreasonable. Instead, they make roads more narrow, plant trees close to the road, make chicanes and so on to make it uncomfortable to drive faster than 30. That's remarkable.
If people drive the wrong way systematically maybe there is something that can be done to improve the design of that stretch of road.
That being said, it is easier said than done, and it's unclear what can be done to abolish queues that cause people to go the wrong way in the first place.
Until then, all there is to do is educate people and I guess report those who commit the offence.

For Gandalf corner in particular I wonder if the island could be shrunk enough to fit in a lane for turning right on the left hand side of it, so people can 'skip' the queue for straight ahead without contravening the keep left, which would probably overall improve the traffic flow. I suspect there's not enough width overall though, but perhaps eg putting in a traffic light controlled crossing would allow for removing the island entirely...
I think you are right about road design. There is a road where I live that's posted at 30mph but most drive at 25 as the road has a block paved surface and a zebra crossing. It's like people just want to drive slower there including me.

He has responded to the criticism that he doesn't stop cyclists quite often, I'm surprised you didn't comment on it. For those who don't know, his stance is that jumping in front of cyclists would be quite likely to cause them to fall off and that would be dangerous. Tbh I don't really think that's a convincing counter, but you might have wanted to include it for the sake of completeness
He says the same about motorcyclists and I am honestly with him on the reasoning. I’ve seen so many motorcycle crashes where riders have just grabbed a fist full of front brake in a panic and I can imagine the same happening if a person jumped out in front of them.

I was a menace when I rode a bike in London, and the police didn't worry me because they couldn't catch me or ID me.
I've found myself watching a lot of Mikey's videos of late and it has had a profound impact on me when it comes to using my phone. I would have previously been tempted to have a look a my phone while stationary or worse, when moving. Seeing how indefensible this evidently is has influenced me. Every time I feel myself tempted to pick up the phone in this situation; I find I'm stopped by the determination to not be 'one of those people'. It now stays tucked away out of reach when I'm in the car. I am a cyclist and motorcyclist as well, so do have a comparably high stake in the game of improved overall driver awareness.
I used to think cyclemikey went over the top as I would only ever report anyone, as a cyclist, that personally put my life in real danger but several confrontations with such errant motorists has lead me to believe that some will never change unless punished and even then may not and my lax view may be too late one time. I haven't changed my practice but fully appreciate cyclemikey's stance as bad practices need changing and to be fair cyclemikey only catches illegal and proven dangerous practices and I believe he has personal reasons that I would say justifies his concern on these issues.
When I am a motorist he won't catch me as I don't do these things.

I watch Mikey's channel all the time. The only one's causing the problems and the aggravation are the drivers on the wrong side of the road. He has called out loads of cyclists about doing the same thing but he obviously can't report them. I totally agree with what he's doing. The police and courts agree also. Some people don't learn anything unless it hurts their pockets.
On one of his videos he follows a driver into a near empty private car park. He was upset the driver was using this car park when he wasn't allowed and he proceeded to troll the unfortunate driver, you know the old "you are going on youtube" sort of thing, until he over-reacted. Sod all to do with road safety just the actions of a deeply unpleasant individual.
He could just record and report the offending drivers. He doesn't need to stand in the road and cause a fuss.

Check out the clip where he catches Guy Ritchie on the phone in traffic - and quite rightly so, but then causes the driver of the oncoming black Merc to slow down almost to a stop because he's cycling on the wrong side of the road.
Firstly nobody should be on their phone while driving but the issue i have is GR was in stationary traffic and CM went out of his way going from the cycle path onto the road so he could creep alongside his car causing causing anyone filtering to go further into the other lane and as you mentioned CM was in fact at times on the wrong side of the traffic divide causing oncoming traffic to slow down because he was so focused peering into the car. I would say he is a far bigger danger than GR in this case but yet he didn't receive any fine or points it doesn't seem balanced.

As for the video, it baffles me when people try and cut corners like this then be like "I've already started, just let me finish". I think the same as you. By rubbing it in and actually physically blocking people he creates angry situations where people could get hurt, I have seen numerous times people have gone up the pavement to get around him. Just report them and be done with it no need to play super hero!
I think I'm right in saying that Mikey sadly lost his dad at a younger age due to a drink driver? And that's what has fuelled his style of videos. I'm not sure I could ever comprehend that heartache that that brings and therefore I can't bring myself to criticise his stance.
He has said before that it's a lot easier stopping a car than it is a bike. A car has to stop (their car cannot fit through the gap) whereas if he were to stop cyclists, they would be more prone to trying to swerve to avoid Mikey and that could cause an even worse incident.
I can't say I'd ever do what he does, I don't have the balls to enter those confrontations. But particularly in reverence to the mobile phone users, I am glad he does what he does. There has to be a clamp down on people using a phone behind the wheel. It is too dangerous and is becoming even more of an epidemic.
I think I've seen that mentioned a few times, a driver struck and killed his father.
When he was growing up in South Africa his dad was killed by a drunk driver.
I have seen Mikey in more recent videos try and at least have a word with cyclists who are also breaking the rules saying "come on you're letting the side down". But he can't very well stop the cyclists while dealing with the car driver and he can't report them after very easily cause of no numberplates.

Agree. You made a suggestion, I'll make another. Why not stop the driver and ask them not to do it again, forgive them, be pleasant and create a good feeling in their mind. If they are evil, then neither approach will work, but if they have a little goodness in them, we might multiply it.
I've watched a lot of mikey's videos at Gandalf Corner and quite enjoy seeing them made to reverse. The attitude of some of them is shocking at times. But it is confrontational and there is something a bit irritating about a cyclist telling motorists how to behave when a lot of their own road safety is appalling. One good thing now though is that motorists know what he does and that they can be caught, there are quite a few who suddenly get back into the queue when they see him so it does work.
I love the whole view on cyclists being the ones who are bad on the road. Just so you know there are as many bad cyclists out there on the road as there are car users. It’s not the mode of transport it’s just there’s a certain % of population who just aren’t quite with it!
Glad someone's addressed this. I think this guy is half martyr, half menace. He clearly highlights an issue but I'm surprised the old bill haven't called time on his game. The video with the two doctors, I gave up watching how many cars his antics had forced to drive on the footpath and he ain't a traffic cop. Start a campaign and let the plod do their job.
I drive, cycle and (obviously) walk. I fully support his approach - too many drivers get away with it, even after he reports them. Maybe the hassle of getting told off in public will make them less likely to act in a similar way in the future. I agree with you as well that cyclists should be held to account more often. It's frustrating, as a cyclist, to see others run red lights, not give way to pedestrians and cycle inconsiderately while expecting everyone else to be considerate towards them.
To stick up for Mikey he does tell off the cyclists. He says stopping then would be dangerous for them as it might unbalance them when he jumps out. He says he is prepared to take the risk himself with cars. He often gets lots of positive comments from motorists who support what he does. They are the good 96% per cent who wait before turning right. I applaud what both Ash and Mikey do. I agree he perhaps needs to just film them and not stop them. That could in theory give cyclists a bad name. Point taken there. I also think Ash needs to consider reporting a small % of drivers who really are dangerous. As they will get points and that will deter them from doing it again. It's up to Ash as he will be very busy now with all the demand on driving schools. I just appreciate the videos he puts out.

Generally the sort of drivers that Mikey catches are obnoxious self important arseholes. I say anything that exposes them and gets them some consequences has to be a good thing. As for setting an 'us vs them' situation, Mikey does this on foot, not on his bike plus the majority caught are almost certainly cyclist haters already. It goes with the driving.

It's interesting that people say it's Mikey who is bringing about the negative feelings when it's drivers behavior that is the initial and overriding cause of that negativity.
While this remains the case, the abuse and danger to vulnerable road users a good number of drivers feel entitled to meet out is by far the greater issue than 'everyone just getting along'.
Driving is a revokable licence based on how you choose to drive, it is not an inalienable right and it most certainly doesn't afford anyone greater priority over anyone else.
But the cause of the driver behaviour is probably their own negative feelings about them being in a queue of traffic, being late etc.
Does everyone just get along mean that the worst behaviour needs to be tolerated or that everyone should follow applicable laws and regulations? Much better world if the entitled are inconvenienced by forced to follow rules and laws than endangering the innocent through reckless their actions.

I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiments Ashley, and I think you have even missed a point. If Mikey really is concerned about the way people are driving, then his correct course of action is to collect evidence and hand it to the police, it is their job to enforce the law, not his. In fact, if a police officer was to attend the scene when Mikey is blocking the road, the officer could (and should) charge him with obstructing the flow of traffic (he should also charge the motorist with driving on the wrong side of the road). If Mikey feels that the police are not handling his complaints properly, then his crusade should be to rectify that, not to bully motorists.
I am a practicing psychologist and I am of the opinion that Mikey's videos have little to do with drivers and their ways. My view is that Mikey suffers from, what the layman would call, a Superiority Complex and drivers faults are simply a vehicle (no pun intended) for his need to ‘Lord’ it over others. ‘Superiority Complex’ is not, in itself, a psychological condition but simply a blanket term for a number of conditions, most stemming from low personal esteem. I would be surprised to find that Mikey does not know a lot about a surprising number of topics! On a more serious point, Mikey, himself, might see his antics as a harmless attempt to educate errant drivers but I fear that he might be placing himself at considerable risk. Several of my patients attend with anger management problems and there is one in particular who would not take kindly to being obstructed in such a way and might decide to ignore the ‘obstruction’. I think I might find it very challenging were I called to appear as an expert witness at any resultant court case/inquest. Thankfully my practice, and patients, are not located in London but anger management is a problem throughout the country.
I'm both a cyclist and a motorist and I see both sides, many times it's 6 & two 3's. This video is presented in calm and informative way, bravo, if only everyone was a little like you our roads would be a much safer place.
I'm sure you're correct that you have seen such, however, this is not the case here. One issue with Ashley's videos is that they try to be 'balanced', in the same way a debate involving Flat Earthers can be 'balanced'. The idea that it is 6 of one, twos 3s of another makes it seem balanced, when in fact it is more a 100 of one and 2 of another. Yes, both may have some degree of potential refinement, but that does not mean scolding both equally is balanced, just like airing both as equally valid is not balanced.
This is relevant because it makes the more egregious party think they are just as much in the right and therefore don't need to take responsibility. In clips like this, the cyclist is annoying, the car drivers are deadly - thats not balanced. The car drivers need to take responsibility and change. If you say its half a dozen of one and 6 of the other you get people like that 'helpful' fellow who 'has an idea, sir' trying to get the cyclist to move so the driver can enjoy the benefits rather than learning.

But yes agree with you. Making this a balanced discussion completely ignores the fact that drivers and cars (and larger) are responsible for over 95% of all the accidents that lead to injury or death. While even with a car vs cyclist accident, the car driver is at fault more than 80% of the time.
Cars are more dangerous when peole choose to do the wrong thing with them, or choose to be distracted.
I watch a lot of Mikey, those he catches on their phones, regularly don't notice him literally cycling next to them for minutes at a time. He is often commended by police officers and other road users. Yes his approach is different, but is it wrong because we wouldn't do it. Cycling or being a pedestrian in London, and other big cities, is dangerous and the drivers Mikey catches are the ones breaking the law. I agree education is more valuable, but those who stand and argue claiming to be in the right, are beyond it. If he has the time to do it and submit cases, then all good. I wouldn't, but I couldn't do Ashley's videos either.

He regularly causes issues with his riding, I have seen him on west carriage drive a number of times (where the majority of the gotchas for mobile phones are filmed) and he swerving about and stopping in the opposing lane all the time

I’ve been commuting through central London for a year on a motorcycle. In my experience the most considerate road users are van drivers, and the worst are cyclists, Uber or Prius drivers are typically bad as well. I’ve also noticed that wealthy drivers are lazy and take many risks, I assume it’s because they can just pay for damage and get on with their day. As a motorcyclist I’m always anticipating the actions of other on the road and making judgments to keep myself safe on the road - we can’t all be good at driving after all and because I’m more vulnerable I take extra care. In my experience a large minority of cyclists simply don’t do this and expect other road users to see them or be aware that they’re there. This attitude is all wrong, stay back, take care and stop running red lights. Gain the respect of other road users.

Nor are barriers a bad thing: Your PIN number is a barrier, your house walls are barriers, a medical exam is a barrier, as is a driving test, all of which are positive things in a less than ideal world. Most of us rely on metaphorical walls for multiple positive things - peace, privacy, protection, (have you heard of a firewall?), and walls (metaphorical and literal) can be as effective in preventing conflict as bridges.

I believe they cannot install cameras there because its a conservation area and would need planning permission and would be objected to by residents.

In Denmark, it is the person with the camera who would be prosecuted. Under strict, invasion of privacy laws. No image or video of an alleged crime may be published or uploaded for viewing online. Perhaps ironically, the camera wielder is likely to be more heavily fined than the alleged criminal being recorded in the act. It is also an offense to set up a security camera to record a public space. i.e. A pavement or road. Yet, again ironically, the police will seek recordings from security camera owners to help them to solve crimes.

Mikey may not report cyclists who pass while he is challenging a driver, but If he is waiting for the next four-wheel victim, he always calls out cyclists and bikers who are passing on the wrong side. He frequently explains that he would not try to stop them since there is a much greater risk of creating an accident/injury to those on two wheels. I think Mikey's efforts make a much needed addition to offficial road user education, which generally seems to miss the intended targets. A retired friend of mine, now 85, went for a colleagues' reunion in the City of London, and while walking round old haunts was digusted by the apparent habit of cyclists of weaving through pedestrians on a crossing, whether light controlled or not.

Only he does not 'always call out cyclists' and there have been occasions where he could easily stop the cyclist ( or at least try) . The little, half hearted 'come on, you are letting the side down' is meek and shows he is determined to embarrass car drivers, not cyclists.
What he also does is force drivers, cyclists and bikers/mopeds to drive up on the pavement to get past his stand off, which often go on and on and on - yet why? He has the car number, he has the footage - stand aside, let the traffic flow again.
I think his issue is not so much what he is trying to do but the way he goes about it. Too tunnel visioned and woefully self righteous.

I'm an hgv driver up and down the country all week, and the amount of people I see using their phones is colossal. From members of public to emergency services. They're well aware because of how low they're hiding the phones to look at. Which I think will only cause worse RTA,s.
The big thing is that Police and emergency services in Ireland are exempt from phone and seat belt laws. Only the plebs can be pulled for use of phones or non wearing of seatbelts. Exemptions are made for door-to-door deliveries but such deliveries are rare nowadays. I am lucky to have handsfree which is a boon for calls. I do not use the phone for satnav unless I can set up the thing at a standstill before actually moving off.
Ive been driving at gandalfs road with no issues at all so far...the only problem i have are cyclists ignoring traffic signals especially when i approach to turn and a cyclist suddenly ride fast from the opposite direction
Truth? then you only get there outside rush hour. As a motorist you are not bothered by cyclists, you can kill them, they cannot kill you. Cyclists can move quickly through traffic and as a driver I can be quite jealous of that but understanding. You don't want to hit a bicycle with your car. An accident is easily made. That is why in NL cyclists always have priority even if this is against the traffic rules. They are the weaker road users and motorists must respect this. We have to watch out and that's good. Every accident involving a pedestrian or cyclist is our fault. The mindset of road users doesn't matter, it's the regulations that matter POINT. Any lawsuit resulting from an accident is lost by the driver POINT. How difficult can it be here. For example, a roundabout where cyclists can cycle left and right. The 1st time you get a terrible shock, but you get used to it quickly and the traffic flows faster. Why? People are more likely to take the bicycle nowadays because it has become easier and much safer. Yes, you can often estimate in advance what someone is going to do. You often see cars, cyclists, etc., moving or looking to the left or right before a turn or overtaking maneuver without any reason other than that they want to turn. In NL you are always at fault as a motorist in an accident and you will have to pay the cyclist compensation regulated by law. I understand that you find this strange and unfair, but believe me in practice this does not happen often and because more people cycle there is less traffic. I dislike confrontation myself and I would never yell at other road users like that or even use my horn to tell them off. But I feel there's a certain lack of accountability for these systematic offences and I totally understand why some people might want to enforce the rules in some way since the police obviously don't want to or don't care enough to. I live near an intersection where there's so many offences, you can't watch a single light cycle without at least 3-4 cars breaking the rules or doing something dangerous. I just want there to be a policeman there standing for 2 hours each day making it rain tickets until these people learn to not break the rules.

I can blame Mikey for that! His actions of obstructing traffic indirectly caused other road users to take dangerous actions.
Not all action need intent for it to be illegal, the lack of intent can equally be criminal. For example but driving without due care and attention may not of been intentional but it could lead to a fatal traffic collision, that is negligent resulting in Man Slaughter. That is an extreme example but it happens and they may no malice or intentions behind it but it is an offence.
Mikey's principles do not outweigh the result in eyes, he should be given a warning by the police.

Maybe so: old Bikey Mikey appears to break the rules in attempting to catch people. It might backfire if people start reporting him for his failings and road safety breaches. Numerous can be compiled from his videos and sent to the police for action. It might even be construed that he is encouraging a breach of the peace in place of saying nothing and just reporting the incidents. It may also be interpreted that since the police are aware of Bikey Mikey's involvement in this way, they too are guilty of aiding and abetting a member of the public to cause such breaches, and through his own road safety breaches appear to turn a blind eye.
I drive a 7.5T lorry into London most weeks, I have my sat nav plus my phone in a cradle, I'm nearly always going to a business I haven't been to before and sometimes I have to find the back door or a road is closed or something like that, am I allowed to zoom in on the map when it's in a cradle at a red light when I'm not moving or is this against the law now?
I agree that confrontation is often not the best method of education although it is important to stop these people from doing this, I have had incidents where in the process of being overtaken on my push bike, road users (including a double decker) have overtaken me on the wrong side of these and it is very dangerous. Pedestrians and other road users aren't expecting vehicle there especially for those who are vision/hearing impaired.
Mikey does tell cyclists off, not as often as maybe he should but he has commented before that he won't because there is a greater likelihood of them getting injured if he steps out on them. We need proper education of drivers in this country on the dangers of phone usage/poor driving. The same goes with cyclists, we need better/any cycling education and better infrastructure to allow for separation of road users.
Depending on the cycle being used, and if they're not going too fast, you can stop a bike in its tracks by grabbing the handle bars at the beam connecting them.

I began driving 39 years ago. The driving offences captured by you and cyclingmikey, were a rarity then. Today, they are an everyday event. 3 times I have narrowly avoided a collision with drivers on the wrong side of a central reservation. Traffic policing has been downgraded considerably by successive governments. Road policing is now left to the public via Op.Snap.
The US has Highway Patrols - self funded by infringement penalties. The same needed in the UK.
I think you are absolutely right it would be just as affective just reporting them as one day some idiot may watch his videos and take a knife with them . I would far rather he kept safe
The resentment and division point is the one that resonates with me. I've watched some of his videos and seen his social media and there's a definite group (not saying he's part of it) that just looks for the divide and wants all vehicles (except cycles) off the roads entirely. I doubt that many of these people who are caught look at cyclists favourably afterwards.
Simple solution? Have an ANPR style caera on this junction? That way, the offending driver can be sent Notification of Prosecution. Being confrontational, he's in great danger of being assaulted, and I have seen irrate drivers trying to "nudge" him and his bike out of the way.
As for speaking to drivers using their mobile, he;s really pushing his luck, if he "triggers" a real psycho he could end up being seriously assaulted (or worse), all the while calling out "you're on camera you know". Just record their use of a phone, record their face and reg. no. and pass it to the police. Much safer!.

No traffic shouldn't take dangerous manumeas to drive on the wrong side of the road, but likewise don't give an incentive for someone like Mike to take matters into their own hands.
ANPR isn't going to stop any of the other road users breaking the law or behaving dangerously. Better to have a couple of coppers standing there. The fines will pay the wage bill, and the sight of traffic police may be enough to have most of the potential transgressors suddenly behave themselves.
@@slyfoxyandalifesaver he isn't obstructing traffic, he only steps into the road when it's to prevent an offence being committed and he gets back out of the road as soon as the offenders vehicle is no longer positioned to commit the offence, so that's legal, it's using reasonable force to prevent an offence.
Royal parks authority won't allow cameras
Citizens need to intervene and be encouraged to do so. Mikey encourages others by his actions. Intervention can be confrontational and for every driver confronted there will be a dozen others witnessing the event and encouraged to not make the same error.
These interventions and confrontations potentially save lives. If the drivers did not blatantly break the law there then I am sure that Mikey would be able to divert his attention to red light jumping cyclists etc..

if I put myself into the head of an agressive driver, I think that if mikey pulled something like this on me, I'd definitly do something worse. i.e. creeping the car forwards into mikey, mounting the pavement to get round etc.
I learned a lot from Mikey’s early videos when I was preparing for my driving test. I am grateful to him and other UA-camrs, like yourself, who give tips and help people to be more aware. I have seen his recent videos and I have mixed feelings now. He is still in the right of course but I feel like he is sometimes trying to make a scene to get more clicks. He could film them and report them without standing in front of the car which actually causes other issues, like cars going the other way mounting the pavement. When they admit that they made a mistake and reverse, he still puts their face on UA-cam and reports them.
Years ago I got too close to a moped rider and I straight way apologised to him and told him I hadn’t noticed him. It was an honest mistake. It’s one of those events that just get added to your database in the back of your mind and you always remember it. So I have learned from it and I have not repeated it. If that rider had filmed me and out my number and face on UA-cam for that one mistake, it would have been really unfair.
An excellent video, raising many points, clearly, motorists, as with all road users, should adhere to the rules and the Highway Code, but I am staggered by the Gandalf Corner issue, who in their right mind would believe it is ok to drive on the wrong side of the road 🤔

As a life-long motorcyclist I'd like to see him make an effort to treat all road users equally. Even though it's easier for a motorbike to get around him and evade his efforts than it is for a car he should at least be stepping out and making the same amount of effort, not just giving 2-wheelers a free pass.
@@Dave-bu6bc it's not physically possible for him to stop motorbikes or cyclists, unless you are suggesting he should step out into the road carrying a long set of ladders! Doing this would likely put the motorbike or cyclist at great risk - remember, they are vulnerable road users too!
A cyclist also poses much less of a risk to pedestrians than a car, so whilst they are still wrong to contravene that keep left, the danger they create by doing so is orders of magnitude less than that created by a car driver.
@@shm5547 It's not PHYSICALLY possible for him to stop car drivers either, a human body will not stop a car, that's simple physics. Most of those cars that he stops could have got around him by taking to the pavement and accelerating hard, anyone trained in evasive driving would have little trouble evading one person trying to block a gap of that size.
The reason the drivers stop is because they encounter an unexpected pedestrian and do not wish to collide or evade, they just want to be able to ignore the rules and most of the times when they're forced to stop for a pedestrian the pedestrian then moves out of the way. Most 2 wheelers would stop for exactly the same reason. He might have a slightly lower success rate with maybe 1/4 going around him instead of stopping but he'd get the opportunity to "re-educate" the majority, he'd dispel the appearance of bias that his actions currently have, and it's not like he's expending a massive amount of effort just taking a couple of steps into the road.
A cyclist can still kill a pedestrian, people have died from being struck by a bicycle, so the risk should be assessed as being the same, that of death. A heavy motorcycle weighs almost as much as the lightest car and the potential for damage to a pedestrian is actually higher due to the absence of smooth surfaces and crumple zones.
@@Dave-bu6bc as I said, trying to stop a cyclist or motorbiker would put *them* at risk. The only person being put at risk when he tries to stop a car is Mikey himself. There is a huge difference between doing something risky that affects you and doing something risky that affects someone else.
A lot of people don't grasp this though. It's the reason there's a safe overtaking distance for cars overtaking bicycles, but not the other way round.
I think his vids do enhance pedestrian, motorist, and cyclist safety; they also provide a public education service as evidenced with the number of people that recognize him. He has stated numerous times he cannot ethically or safely impede cyclists at the location, they could crash and/or injure themselves and/or others. I think though that they should be filmed as well and displayed on his channel just like motorists.
Is the layout not clear enough it being a "royal" park? It seems strange so many people do it. Perhaps a two-way traffic sign might help.
The only conflict I have had with a cyclist was when one decided to give me a lecture about giving way. I was waiting at a set of lights. Across from me as the lights that go with mine. A straight on lane (left) and a merge lane (right) for completely different routes. Cyclists was more or less in the left lane. As traffic set off, he set off. He was in the left hand lane still, although he was basically wandering around the central lane markers. I was already ahead so I nipped through my lane, didn't come within 10 feet of the cyclist. At the next set of lights he came up and banged hard on my passenger window. I wound it down. "You not see the give way signs there?", "I did give way to my lane, you weren't in it.", "You have give way to everyone there.", "Emm no. And what lane were you in anyway? Randomly drifting up the middle of the lanes, pick your lane, take your position and stop harassing people for your own bad riding.", the lights we were at went green. He immediately tried to cut across the front of the car, AFTER I had started moving. There were no advanced stop area at these lights for cyclists and when the lights went Amber... Green he was beside me giving me grief. He literally stood up on the pedals and aimed his bike across the front of my car. I moved forward 6 inches and stopped in response to him, unblancing him, he had to put his feet down and I proceeded forward.
Then and I admit this was a little bad of me.... a pulled up as close as I possibly could to a parked car ahead blocking my lane and signalled out the window to allow the car to my right to pass. Completely blocking the cyclist in to the left lane. He tried to squeeze through the tiny gap, so I slammed the horn down as a honest warning that, that is not a safe move. He flipped me the bird and cycled off up the pavement.
Ass hole.

One thing i have noticed with mikeys video's is he isn't trying to promote a product.
I never expected an Ashley Neal video on CyclingMikey. I've been watching his videos a lot, and whilst I love his stubborn way of enforcing the rules, I still do find walking in front of the cars concerning to say the least.
Edit: I don't believe you would have seen his arguement here, but supposedly the reason he doesn't stop motorcyclists and cyclists going through is that they are more vunerable if they have to stop suddenly from someone walking in front of them.
I watched a few videos after the "gandalfs corner" hint in your video.
I think, he explained multiple times why he doesn't stop cyclists.
I don't think it only causes divide with people that are afraid to be caught themselves or have problems with cyclists - at least with knowing why he doesn't stop them.
cyclists have no issues stopping he just chooses not to confront them.
