DIY Fly Tying Dubbing Dispenser and Custom Dubbing Blends for Flies - PF

- This is an easy way to put together a custom collection of dubbing and to build an assortment box or dispenser. The dubbing I blend is similar to the Senyo's Laser Dubbing from Hareline. I use a lot of Laser Dubbing, but I like to be able to build my own custom colors and blend several colors of acrylic yarn with an accent like Ice Dubbing or Angelina Fibers.

You can mix 1 color of yarn with some of the Angelina fibers, or mix multiple colors with multiple colors of Angelina fiber. I like to mix black in with lighter colors for a dirty looking blend.
For the tool, just find a paperclip and use some pliers to straighten the wire and add a tight bend to one end. I added the weight on the other end so I can find it a little easier in my giant messy fly tying room.

Darren, enjoyed this. I'm an ole crappie jig tyer (not a fly rodder), who haunts the fly tiers sites for all my better jig ties. Just starting to try some hackle & dubbing instead of hackle & chenille. Also making glass & mono eyes & lead wire on a 90 degree jig hook w/o a lead head. Even though this is an old vid you can tell on everyone of these YT vids of people making their own fibers from yarn,macrame cord,etc. who have never watched their mother or grandmother ever knit or crochet anything at any point in their lives.
If they did they wouldn't fight with the skein of yarn rolling around everywhere and just pull the end out from the center of the skein....that is once you know how to find that end...LOL
Your tool to pull out the dubbing can be found right beside the yarns....they're called crochet needles or hooks and can be found in different sizes...and are cheap.There are also latch hook crochet needles,and you can pull the latching mech off of it to just have the hook.
A woodworking bit called a brad point drill bit would be the choice to drill in the plastic.You can start with what ever size you want the hole to end up as.They're cheap at harbor freight...

Good idea. I took a bunch of the round bead holders from Wal-Mart, drilled holes in the sides, and made a small base out of a dowel and plaque. Cost me $15 total. I like the tackle box idea. I have a ton laying around and will defiantly give this a try asap.

Thanks Darren, I use the Hareline dubbing mixer but it is the same idea. If I am doing larger amounts, I use a coffee grinder. I don't use dubbing dispensers because my area for tying is very limited. I use zip loc bags on binder rings and have a series of hooks that I hang them on. works for me. All the best, Sean

If you run the drill bits in reverse (counterclockwise) when drilling thin plastics, it will prevent a lot of the cracking...also supporting the plastic with a wooden insert, in this case, would really help.

Like your presentation on this video, in particular your paperclip tool. Have you tried using a coffee bean grinder to mix dubbings? I picked one up at a thrift store for a couple of dollars and find it does a good job quite quickly. Keep up those DIY videos.

Ever use wool NOT spun into yarn, just the the prepared and dyed fibers? Does the seal come bagged ready to dub or pelt form? Although a no no here, I've heard it's a sustainable harvest in Canada and the meat is consumed.(btw you ever have any? Or "baked apple berries", they're similar to the cloud berries found in northern Norway, northern Canada and Alaska? Just culinary curiosity, you taught me Chimo, want to learn more Canadian :-)
You have some great custom dubbing Darren. That company that makes angelina has other fibers for crafting. Thanks for the link.(rhcp posted time links on songs of that concert, very cool) Cool dubbing pick too, love paper clips. Pfeiffer uses a modified one for a tube fly adapter. Chicone bends one into a crank for a dubbing loop twister. I use them to to store my swivels and snaps.
A long time ago I called Spirit River for a catalog, if I talked to Bill Black I couldn't tell you. But in the very cool catalog Black's partner was given credit for the first dubbing dispenser doing what you just did.
Your first diy dub tutorial made me sub. Bought a $tore grooming brush. Then another because you use 2 as apposed to doing it on a board. (I think I mentioned the crafting channels that gave other fabric/fiber techniques). I have some cool yarns I picked up, one is a silver/gray nylon I want to use for a Horner's Silver Shrimp body instead of the silver oval tinsel over floss underbody called for in the recipe. That's a cool looking pattern that looks like fry or other foods, open to many color and material varients.

Chimo Joe. Yes, I carded like mad. I've really enjoyed watching concerts here on YT. I'm not much for going out to a live concert anymore, but it's nice to see some of my favorites up on stage. I don't think I've had seal meat before, but I have had things like bear, caribou, muskox, and rattlesnake. Bison is a favorite. The seal I have is a combination from Superfly and Canadian Tube Fly Co. I know you guys have a ban on the import, but like you say, it's a sustainable harvest. I get it in ready to dub. It's similar to pigs wool in texture but has a nice translucence like polar bear underfur.
Anyhow, I had fun putting this box together. I've been planning to do it for a few months but didn't have much time to do it. The carding took a little longer than expected as I kept getting distracted by the shiny things on the internet.

Piscator Flies I'm with you on going to a concert. Our NYS Fair has free ones every day during it's run. Stevie Ray Vaughn played there a couple of times. Too bad he died. Seen him at the height of his abuse and after he cleaned up or "came home from the party" as he put it. Night and day difference. I go to the free ones. Ted Nugent, Stray Cats, Earth Wind and Fire, all free. Sting and Areosmith I may have paid for because they played at the race track's grandstand. That's all done now. No more races no grandstand.
I had 🐻 bear when I was younger. My uncle bagged one. Mom made stew. I liked it. Coarse grained but tasty. Had some exotics at the fair like gator, ostrich, maybe snake. All tastes like the batter coating they deep fried it in. Bison is available in the store. Heard it's strong tasting but never had it. Venison is good. The better you take care of it after harvest the better it tastes. Nothing better than the tender loins shortly after harvest. My dad made calves head roasted in the oven. I was in 2nd grade maybe, mom was in the hospital I think after delivering my baby brother. I ate the brains, the meat around the jaws. It must have been good because it's a good memory. I wanted to take the teeth to show and tell at school but dad said not a good idea, lol. We had a fish market on our block. Every Friday I was sent to get fish for dinner, I was just a kid. Sometimes my father let me get frog legs. Those were great. I got to go frogging or gigging I think they call it too. We have lots of frogs here on the property.
I knew about the seal from watching a travel show on PBS. I forgot what the guy ate, cured or dried sausage, but he liked it and the shop owner told him it was seal. I know what polar bear LOOKS like, I have some. Pigs wool I've never seen in hand.

okydok, no, I didn't mix the ones at the end. They are a dubbing called Diamond Dubbing (Superfly), it's very similar to Hareline Ice Dubbing. For the dubbing I use the most, I create a case like this for it and get a few extra colors to fill it out. Cheers

The shiny fibers I use in the mixes is called Angelina. It's very similar to Ice dubbing and I think that Diamond Dubbing may have used it as a base (dyed over and carded) I bought a range of 14 colors for my own use, I think I cost me about $100, but I get some decent sized quantities. I have enough to make a few kilos of dubbing now.

Good stuff man, I’m looking back at this video to make some. Did you pick yours up at Hobby lobby, acmoore, Joanne fabrics? I made some amazingly soft and buggy and fluffy dubbing by buying the $3.99 bag from cabelas of assorted rabbits hides and I’ll shave off each color into a grinder and blend away and I’ll mix it up a lot. I love it

The Angelina fibers I got online from an eBay seller (ebay.to/2G08kt1) and the combs and box from a dollar store. Sounds like some nice rabbit blends. James, I like these brushes for dubbing with longer fibers say 1/2 inch or longer and the coffee grinder for shorter dubbing. I hope that helps. Cheers

Thank you Rob Y. Just have a watch of the video. In my opinion, the combs make some of the best dubbing blends. Keep an eye out at the dollar store for good colors of acrylic or wool and add a little bit of the ice dubbing to get a little sparkle in there. I really appreciate you stopping by the channel. Cheers
